Monty's Plaice in Staffordshire Moorlands

We ate in, the surroundings were fine, it was clean and the service was good. We both had Fish, Chips and peas which we found to be very good. Cooked fresh, fair portion and no issues there. Unfortunately (and this may seem a bit petty) the drinks, one tea and one coffee were dreadful. Obviously made with the cheapest tea bag and coffee that they could source. It sort of spoiled an otherwise fair meal. The drinks cost about £4, how much is a decent tea bag? On leaving I mentioned this to the member of staff who was serving and she said Oh, and sort of shrugged. Come on, buy a decent jar of coffee. It's not hard. ( Or expensive) It left a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths. (Literally)

Staff are lovely! The establishment is clean and tidy. Disappointed by some of the food itself, battered sausage was was bitty, the milkshake was nesquick and the gravy wasn’t great. The chips are lovely though, crispy.

Just had the Evening special of Small Fish, Chips, Peas & a Mug of Coffee... Being someone who worked in a Chippy for 5 years, can I just say this meal was done to perfection, the fish when cut was perfectly white & the batter was lovely and crispy. The chips where lovely & fluffy white inside & the mushy peas were the cherry on the top of this gorgeous meal.. I just had to complement the guyz when I walked out... Take care & you can bet I'll be visiting again.....

We live in a town with three very poor fish and chip outlets. However, this doesn't stop us wanting this British staple. The answer? A sixteen mile drive to 'Monty's'. The service is excellent and the food....outstanding! We had the fish special - a slightly smaller portion which perfectly suits our appetites - and everything was just as good as on our previous visits. Thank you to all at 'Monty's', we will be back.

We had the fish and chip special, £6:50 with a mug of tea. Really nice fresh fish, batter just right. Served promptly by pleasant staff.

Had a lovely lunch today, with my family, the fish and chips were nice and fresh, the batter on the fish was delicious and light. Service was great and even got to meet the local town crier Bill Lomas. Would definitely go again next time in leek.

Very small portion again . stopped using it for a while because of that so thought I would give it another go. But never ever again £5.80 for a very small portion it's just ridiculous George's portions are far more generous.

Horrible horrible horrible. Hardly any chips and what I actually got were scraps from the bottom of the bucket. So greasy. I asked for a battered sausage only to find I got a normal one once I got home. Also they seem to use child labour whilst I was waiting there was an 8 year old serving people in the café? Well no wonder the staff attitude is awful can hardly understand what they’re saying and they give you dirty looks for ordering food. Just avoid not worth it for the overpriced grease they try to pass off as food.

Whether its fish, chips and peas or steak puddings the food is delightful. Certtainly my favourite fish and chip shop

Coming from Hull I consider myself a fish and chips connoisseur haha. This was a lovely fish and chips and was almost very easily swayed by reading some of the negative reviews. So glad I didn’t let it put me off and happy to say I was pleasantly surprised by the fish and chips. Staff were OK and only marginal criticism would be slightly greasy batter but that’s down to personal taste more than anything. Top notch fish and the chips were nice too , not too pricey either. Would stop by if I’m ever in Leek again!

Rather small portions for the price you pay considering chips aren’t hard to make or expensive. Staff aren’t very nice either don’t seem to have any customer service skills as though they don’t want the custom.

Unfortunately I believe my unpleasant experience today at Monty's was down to no customer service values, I simply asked if they could check if my order had been forgotten, simple question as the 3 customers that came in behind me received their orders before me, I let the first couple go thinking they may have ordered something different but when the third was handed exactly what I had ordered I questioned it, you would think I had shot somebody, I finally received my order and was accused of having an old lady in tears! honestly, just admit when you are wrong and train your staff properly. PS the batter was awful, way too greasy, the fish was ok and the chips were good but not hot enough, well done you get one point.

Having been to this chip shop a couple of weeks ago to pick up a takeaway for my work colleagues and I, I decided to collect another order this evening. However I was not aware that I should have ordered the takeaway online given that only recently I hadn’t had to. As a result I waited outside in the queue, still unaware of the process. Instead of being greeted by good customer service ie being asked if I’d placed an order instead I was rudely told to move away from the door. Still no explanation of the process and I couldn’t see any information on the door or windows of what to do however I accept it was dark. As I do not have a crystal ball it would have been good customer service to have been told that I needed to pre-order and not being left hanging around like a fool!!The member of staff dealing with the orders was so rude that I left the shop in tears and will never go back there again.I really think the person who was working front of house needs a lesson in good manners and good customer service and she is wrong if she thinks her bolshy attitude will get her anywhere as it obviously won’t!!!

fab chipie, lovely golden,fluffy chips, lamb pudding is to die for, but owner (i presume, were a bloke) wasn’t very nice to the wife, treated in quite patronising way when asked if any gluten free options. greatly appreciated if you could not do this as she meant no harm and gluten makes her quite ill, nonetheless will be returning after we think it is safe to in the pandemic, keep up good work.

Normally have the fish from here, but decided on the pudding. Wow, one of the best chippt pudding, chips, peas and gravy ive ever had.

Our go to local “chippy” in recent months and always good. The ordering & collection service works really well and I think has improved the freshness of the food. Fish n chip for Mrs C, pudding n chips for me - bloody grand!

First time visit. We had fish and chips and pudding and chips with gravy. Despite some negative reviews the food was really good and plenty of it. Social distancing and screens in place. If busy, you wait outside for them to call you when your food is ready. Yes..well done Montys

This has to be the worst chippy in leek. Thought I would give it another shot and yet again the food was nasty. Went here because George’s in Leek is closed for refurb. Montys defo need a refurb thereselfs not only the decor but the food as well! Just shut the place down.

We watched them microwave all our food, food tasted bland and microwaved. The service was poor also. So many better chippys in leek. Don’t go here

As visitors looking to try steak and kidney pudding and good old English fish and chips we were not disappointed. They do simple food well and with a personal touch. My only complaint is that the portions are too big. We could have shared one portion of chips between two of us.

This is one of the best chippys in Leek - always cooked fresh, always good portions and never too long to wait.The wife always has a fish and I sometimes join her or allow myself a pudding - takeaway and sit in equally as good.Please try it.

Possibly the worst fish and chip shop in the whole of Staffordshire. Even the chips are bad! Everything is microwaved. Overall rubbish, don’t waste your money.

We stayed in Leek For a weekend in the half-term and we fancied fish and chips ;so we found Monty’s and wanted to give it a go. A well laid out restaurant with good ambience and food was exceptional, cheap, however a bit tight on portion sizing but still a brilliant fish and chips .

Nipped on Wednesday,there was quite a few people in,a good sign,ordered chips and curry sauce and chips and mushy peas. Both of them fantastic the curry sauce was really nice,generous portions of chips as well,even got a place where you can sit and eat your takeaway food. Staff friendly,excellent service will definitely return.

My husband and I have started to visit here once a week. We absolutely love it.We came for an early tea this week and we were both for the first time we’re slightly disappointed. My chips pudding and gravy was very dry. They was about two table spoonfuls of gravy. None even on my pudding. I had to make extra at home. I don’t like it swamped but I do like some on my food if ordered. My husbands fish which he asked for lightly battered wasn’t too good. It was a different lady who usually serves us so will give the benefit of the doubt this time. So will be back again soon

We were staying in the area and as I live abroad, and to my mind fish and chips doesn't travel, I am always happy to find a good local chippy. Not only is it very good, Monty's have found a gap in the market by serving smaller portions (i.e. Small fish and chips including mushy peas, hot drink and a slice of bread). They also offer a cheaper weekday price. Service is friendly and quick and the premises and toilets are clean. What more can I say. The fact we ate here 3 times in 2 weeks says it all!

Visited this restaurant after reading review on Trip Advisor, we were in Leek as son was playing a football match against Leek Town and we dont know the area all that well so used Trip Advisor recommendations. Portions were a very good size, even the childs portion was a good size, I had Salmon and Chips for £6, bargain, it was lovely. Staff were friendly and the restaurant was nice and clean. Definately go here again if we are in the area.

Wandering round Leek on a damp Bank Holiday with two dogs, finding this place seemed like a miracle. To say they allow dogs is a massive understatement, I’d say the dogs were more welcome than humans if the staff hadn’t been so lovely to us. And the food was top notch fish and chips (my husband says best he’s had in ages). And the dogs got a free sausage to share

I usually really like Monty't but today was not good. The woman who served me at about 6pm was called out from somewhere else by one of the staff, so I dont know if she doesnt usually serve behind the counter or just didnt want to be there, but she was so busy serving other people and talking to some friends or family who had come in that she ignored the timer going off to say my pie was ready. The result was a burnt pie - when I pointed that out, I was told, 'its a bit brown' with no offer to rectify it. I would have asked for another, but I had already waited and I needed to get home - I had stopped there to save time. Disappointing - this place is usually good.

One of the best fish&chips; and burgers ever! I have tried many places around Leek and Buxton but food in Montys is just so tasty!

My wife and I have needed to go to Leek over the last several months. The first time she said, let's go to here, I came here with my late friend some years ago and it was good. We both had the lunchtime special, with fish, chips and mushy peas plus a slice of bread and butter and tea for her, coffee for me. The service has been excellent too, every time we have been. Place the order at the counter, pay, giving the table number, go sit down. Very soon, everything is brought to the table. This is fast food, Leek, Staffordshire style. Every time the whole meal is perfection, fish with golden batter, chips that are perfectly cooked, soft on the inside, crisp on the outside. It is amazing, the standard is so high and so consistent. We look forward to going and have been very happy every time we have been. Lunchtime it is always busy, but we have never failed to find a table, sometimes sharing with another pair of friendly contented customers. The staff have been all very friendly and helpful, a credit to the establishment. We will be going back for more, I am sure.

Perfect place to go for food on the way home from a full day at Alton Towers. Yummy and both my 3year old and 4 year old enjoyed!

As I have stated on ‘Google Maps’ this venue was lovely. This place is a hybrid of a local ‘chippie’ and a stylish restaurant (at the back).

We have visited Montys several times and they never disappoint. The haddock and chips with homemade peas are lovely. Friendly staff and a clean welcoming restaurant. We will definitely be back.

They do a lunchtime pie special with a range of pie or steak pudding with chips, gravy/curry sauce/mushy peas, bread and butter and tea/coffee. Steak pudding is delicious, chips are spot on and even the mushy peas are extra tasty. Thoroughly recommended.

First off, I make no apologies that this is my second review of Monty's, I honestly cannot stay away.

Visited early evening to eat in the restaurant. Very good and obviously fresh fish. Good well cooked chips. Disappointed that they didn't have a fresh lemon despite fruit and veg shop across the square. Also the salad could have been better. Just some shredded lettuce tomato and cucumber. No salad dressing or olive oil. Just a few improvements would make such a difference.

We went to monty’s fish and chip shop in leek. Have been there a couple of times. Went for a ride up to leek because it was lovely hot day , so the views and country on the way to the small town centre is beautiful . Montys serves fish and chips in a fish shape dish . Medium size can fill you up. Service is good and the staff ( or owner not sure) are very friendly . Nice small shopping area to look around . Not very big . Has about 8 to 10 tables seating about 4 people each . Friendly atmosphere .

Super little FISH CHIP RESTAURANT in leek great friendly service....above all Great FISH CHIPS Was not our first choice but VERY PLEASED we found this Plaice....was looking for a DECENT PUB but somewhat lacking in Leek But who cares within Plaice

This is the first time we have eaten here. Lovely fish and chips and it's so nice to be able to sit at tables so nicely laid out. In fact the whole place is spotless and that includes the toilets. Prices very reasonable and will definitely recommend. The staff are very pleasant and helpful.

We call here once or twice a year and always enjoy the experience. Good food good price good staff happy customers.

We went along today after the scooter rally and had fantastic service even after what must have been a long and busy day for all the staff. Great fish and chips. They even brought out a sausage for my dog! What a lovely take away.

Freshest and tastiest fish and chips in Leek.I usually judge a good chippie by the length of the queue but I've never had to queue here and they're always lovely and fresh

Food is top notch, can’t fault it. Chips are always delicious. Staff are very polite and courteous. 4th time that I’ve ordered a takeaway, got home and discovered items missing. 4th time our chippy treat has been ruined because one of us has had to go back for the missing items/a refund. Apologetic staff but this is one too many times. Very disappointing and I’m unlikely to return.

Wednesday lunchtime has become a bit special at my work place, I always treat the office lad Patryk to a few chip baps. He's a great lad but a little dim, he really does not get what makes a great chip.

Really nice fish and chip restaurant with great value lunch deals. Our meals were freshly cooked, tasty and hot. Very nice piece of fish and perfect chips. All in all, a pleasure.

Having moved to live in Leek recently, we decided to try this Fish and Chip shop as it looked clean and busy, sadly, that's where the positives ended!

Never fail to deliver Perfect Fish & Chips. We sometimes visit on a Saturday lunch-time, if we're shopping in town, and honestly, have never been disappointed. The service is super quick, its amazing value for money and the fish & chip special lunch is delicious. The chips are crisp on the outside and soft in the middle, good quality fish with crispy, light batter. So enjoyable. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant & toilets are spotlessly clean. Today we had to added bonus of a trio of lollies for our Grandson who had eaten all his lunch!!! Thank you for the lovely food……..

We had heard of Monty's and wanted a good fish and chips meal. We chose the right place because the food was excellent along with an efficient and very friendly staff. Comfortable table seating which we can never find down South. So nice to be back in Leek amongst people who still consider people more important than just money.

Excellent friday tea, really efficient service from and I don't like to say the more mature lady. She was very professional unfortunately the young girls don't follow suit and would benefit from watching and learning. At times whilst waiting you would think they were serving in a school tuck shop very immature. But would recommend the food and will return.

This fish and chip shop does excellent food, it has a cafe if you want to eat in, the takeaway gets very busy, so you know your order will be freshly cooked, the fish is always fresh and the batter crispy Allways enjoyable

Took the wife today and they were probably the best chips I've had all year .They wife is very fussy but she enjoyed them as much as me Steak n kidney pie was our choice .And to top if off the wife even told the staff how good they were .Which is very unlike her

We had arrived on outskirts of Leek on a Camp site, and wanted a quick take away on night of arrival. Found Monty's on Town Square and ordered Fish and Chips which was very good and tasty at a reliable price, also a good variety of take away food.

I visited this place a while back and out wasn't the best place to get fish n chips but having tried it again I'm very happy to say this place has redeemed itself. The food is now on top form. Huge portions, crisp batter and nice fresh chips. Three service is fantastic and i can honestly say it is a pleasure to visit. Well done to the current owners/ operators you are doing an absolute sterling job.

Always happy and friendly service here, they don't stack up heaps of food in the range which means more things are cooked freshly to order than a lot of places I could mention. Top job!
