Monty's Nepalese Cuisine in Kingston upon Thames

Have not been in many years and sadly it didn’t quite deliver. It seemed quite overstaffed although it did get busier, but the staff seemed very standoffish and not very friendly. Even a bit hurried despite not being busy. The chicken tikka masala was fairly good, but the dry fry wasn’t up to scratch and tasted a bit reheated if anything. The pilau rice and naan were both average too. In terms of the prices they were above what you’d generally hope, but the quality and service didn’t live up to that price point. If the staff were friendly that would sweeten the pill. No such luck! Overall there are plenty of better places in the area and I wouldn’t hurry back. Quite a generous 3/5 which if broken down more exactly would be a 2.5 in truth.

Not great. Initially, the service seems quite good and popadoms, and a substantial pickle tray are brought out (this is good, none of these ‘thimble’ portions here). They are also very attentive re. Drinks. However, this is a ‘holding pattern’ and things get worse thereafter. The curry itself was decidedly average. I had a Lamb Vindaloo (at over £11) had a sum total of three chunks of ‘meat’ in it (and half a potato) swilling round in loads of sauce. Come on, that is not ok. The final straw was them quibbling, and making a big deal, over a genuine discrepancy on the billthat was less than the service charge (we would have, obviously sorted this immediately with better service). This was approached like we were trying to shaft them rather than in a good humoured way (given the amount we had spent) Not cool. Go somewhere else.

I have been dining at Monty’s for about 12 years and I visited 25th January 2024 and took a friend along as I have done many times. It was most disappointing the main course food was reheated lamb and chicken dishes the sauce on the meat was all dried up you could tell it was not freshly cooked and it was not acceptable for the prices. The waiters also seemed to have a rude attitude and were not their usually friendly selves. I’m afraid I won’t be returning here despite it being a regular favourite all these years. It’s lost its mojo.

Good ebening. Good scran but a troubling lack of limoncello therefore have to deduct a star. Shame.

The portion of the food was very less and lack of authenticity it didn’t even taste like Nepalese food.

Came here for a work night out. Really struggled to park. Food wasn't tasty at all. The staff were totally unwelcoming and unattatentive and had no atmosphere at all. Such a shame

Used to be my fav place to order in from. Quality of food has gone down so much -it’s heartbreaking. I am so sad. And mad. The same dishes I’ve been ordering for years are almost recognizable! Change of chef? Change of quality of ingredients? I have no idea - but it’s so bad.… it was genuinely my one trusted meal that I knew I could always order and it was always amazing … now, it’s like the chef has lost his tastebuds and does not know how to balance his flavors anymore… cut backs on costs? Cheaper quality ingredients? I couldn’t tell you- but whatever it is- it also looks just as unappealing as it tastes. It’s a tradegy and so disappointing.

Been coming to Monty's for 30 years. The same friendly staff have been there since the beginning and believe it or not the food has stayed as good as well. The butter chicken is the best.

Waste of time. Owner calls and says he can't deliver because of the traffic. He then went on to ask me to tell him a short cut to my house. If they are this unprofessional then god forbid what they get up to in the kitchen. DONT GO!

Genuine personal welcome, excellent broad range of authentic Nepalese dishes all served with pickles and assortment of different breads accompanied with regional beers. Clean simple interior style allows for different group sizes, whilst catering for those more intimate evenings, with a glazed garden fountain providing a focal point for parties towards the rear. Excellent service delivered by enthusiastic and welcoming staff.

Food far too salty and we felt pressurised to keep drinking more wine.

Food took about an hour to arrive at the table. Daal was coagulated. Curries were tired. Shishlak was cold. Overall, an unpleasant experience. Will not return.

Lovely food but service a bit perfunctory.

We used to come to Montys years ago for the Sunday Buffet, so pleased to see the restaurant still open after all these years. Service as ever very pleasant , although a little slow when it started to get busy. Food was tasty, reasonably sized dishes but not as good as we remember. Good value for 3 people for £50.

Takeaway ordered which was awful. Asked for a peshwari Nan and got a Nan of half size with a tasteless orange stain in the middl, no almond at all. Sag Aloo was like a mouthful of salt. Chicken tikka masala barely tasted of masala. This and pint of lager while waiting cost nearly £27 .absolute rubbish. Looks like a nice restaurant from outside , looks clean and crisp but the food I got did not match the appearance. After reading the positive reviews here , I noticed that they are mostly at least two years old.

Restaurant has been in business since 1989 which speaks volumes for its reputation. This was our first since pre covid days but had been there many times over the years. Easy access from Kingston train station - less than 5 minutes walk. We always head for the quieter area at the rear - nice decor too! Reasonable prices - you can have a vegetable dish as main course for £6.20 - Sag Bhaji pictured - main courses such as Moglai Curry for £11.25 - pictured. Service is quick & staff polite. We'll be back!

We,four had a birthday party to celebrate.We,were greeted at the four by a smilingember of the staff making us feel so special ie better than family !!!.The decor, facilities and food with the exclusive service was totally awesome. We,will surely come back again.We,just could not believe the indivual and extra special service with normal charges that we were happy to pay without question. MONTY'S was examplery,truly.The, staff and the manager were ever so so helpful. The,car parking' slot' was a huge help,too.We, wish other restaurants could follow in their footsteps,too.Every, wish we asked was fulfilled ,fully with a smile.A,very big THANK YOU to the staff and the management for their friendly,clean and ever so lovely experience we enjoyed.We,shall be back soon.

Food was nice but one of the waiters was very curt and surly, like we had done something to upset him! For that reason we won't be going back.

Lovely staff and atmosphere. We went after 10 years as we use to eat here all the time and loved it. The food was not how we remembered at all. Perhaps not catered for Indians who love flavour and some spice.

Kingston is lucky to have one of the best places in the whole world in it. They offer the best Nepalese food; full of flavor. The food is astonishing, the vibe is great and the staff are extremely helpful, professional and friendly.

My local Nepalese restaurant and I have been going for over 20 years. Hands down the best I have had. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Food that i ordered was terrible! I ordered shashlik kebab and chicken tikka kebab. There was no difference at all between them and both were bad and didnt taste like shashlik kebab or chickken tikka should taste like. One of the very worst chicken momo i have tried in my life! And in a Nepalese restaurant which is surprising. Vegetable biryani was ok but bland. Cider was ok.

Tried for the first time today on an improptu visit to Kingston.. Really loved the food and the new lunch menu was excellent and very good value. The chicken and lamb were both beautifully tender Friendly and attentive staff. Will definitely go again.

Great food and friendly staff, highly recommended! EDIT: Two years later, food was marvellous as always, prices fair, service ok, but something was missing on our last visit. Monty's are not that friendly as they used to be, service was very fast, feeling hurried, which might be a good thing when you're hungry and waiting for food, not so good if you'd prefer to celebrate your meal, completely wrong when you see your table cleaned and prepared for a next customer immediately after you finished eating... I had an impression staff was simply waiting for us to leave. We were considering one more beer, or maybe coffee, deserts were never great here but anyway we weren't offered any... Instead of ordering, we just paid, left, had a dessert somewhere else. Quite disappointing, it was our Valentine's dinner and we were expecting to be a bit more welcome. Still great food, nice decor, but fast-food service.

Food was nice but portions slightly small, customer service isn't the best, was served by two waiters and one was polite and friendly. However the other was very impatient and frankly rude. If you are charging the prices that you are, at least give customers better service.

Really rude boss over the phone and disrespectful as well. Over charged for a bit sauces as always half empty when we order beforehand. We have orded with them for over 3 years and will never again. Will advise people also to not. Shame as the food is normally quite good.

This is a family favourite in Kingston. We always get great food and a very welcoming and professional service. They are very accommodating to vegetarian and vegan diets and it is worth asking the experienced staff there for recommendations. I’m slowly making my way through the veggie options and will definitely be back soon!

I have been going to Monty's for the last 15 years. I can't recommend a restaurant more highly. Their venue is small but impeccable. The staff are professional and caring and the food is incredible. Great options for both meat eaters and Vegetarians. A huge menu of varied options for anyone's taste. Nepalese food at its finest, no compromises.

We discovered this place during lockdown and have only eaten takeaway from here but we are certainly going to go when we next can. As far as the food goes this is the best Indian restaurant in Kingston, and having been here for 14 years we have tried a lot. Each dish has great depth of flavour, the standout dish being chicken tikka masala. It is out of this world. The butter chicken we had recently was also amazing. Can't recomend this place enough.

Introduced 2 Sri Lankan friends to Monty’s and had a wonderful meal. Meats were all tender and succulent. Fabulous spices and a variety of tastes to enjoy. Monty’s never ceases to satisfy the discerning foodie and service is tip top. Can highly recommend this restaurant for consistent delicious food.

Excellent Momocha dumplings and Onion Bhaji. Kathmandu Chicken and Methi Gosht also very good. Servers were friendly and attentive and the decor is also very nice! Will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed it was really busy for a Tuesday but that is probably because of the 50% off the food. waiting was a bit long but was well worth the wait would definitely go back again

First visit after lockdown to a restaurant for a birthday celebration. We were so impressed by the safety measures - all staff wearing shields and masks and social distancing in place - fantastic warm reception by the friendly staff and management. Highly recommended a visit to Monty's for a tasty Nepalese cuisine experience.

Montys are open for takeaways . Had a socially distanced curry with friends . It was delivered with a huge smile and tasted absolutely delicious. It made us feel quite normal again .

I've eaten in Monty's when drunk in the past, and know the service is great. The team are definitely tolerant. However, in these times I've been forced into takeaways.Takeaways always concern me as there are so many touch points where it can go wrong. We called the order in whilst having a beer on the riverside, and when we arrived as told, 35 minutes, the meal was just being bagged. The guys serving were great, and without question gave me the loads of mint sauce I love.We meal didn't real need heating by the time got home, which is a 10 minute walk, so straight in we went. My chicken bhuna was delicious and will definitely have again. The perswahi nan could have done with a but more coconut, but then I have a sweet tooth. The best but though was the onion bhaji. I look forward to my next order.

Montys Kingston is an absolutely Brilliant restaurant. I love it everytime I go there because of its Authentic and mouth wateringly delicious Food. My favourite is King prawn and Butter Chicken there. It has Lovely Decor with warm and friendly Owner, Manager and Staffs. I highly recommend it for multiple visits.

I was hungry and had no idea where to go to. I just pushed the door without being into Nepalese food or whatever. The staff seemed nice and they got us a good table at the end of the restaurant. It has narrow corridors, a big window and plants. It feels cosy.The popadoms were extremely tasty and the carafe of white wine unepexcdibdely very good. My vegan friend had only one option but... it was excellent! Very tasty. Nothing compares to my rainbow trout though. It was simply exquisite. I even ventured to eat the head which I never did before. It might be some of the best fish I've ever had.The staff was very good and seemed very pleased we were enjoying ourselves so much. That meal will remain like a great memory, great evening. Kingston is extremely far from where I live but I might go back one day just for Monty's. Worth the trip!

We didn’t know where to go for dinner and just wandered down the street. We were impressed by the menu and ambiance of this little place and wandered in. We were welcome by very friendly staff that made us feel a very welcome. The food was fantastic - some of the best I’ve ever had. In the words of Arnold: “I’ll be back”

The food is good but not the attitude of some of the staff. Also, there is no child seat - so people with kids might have a tough time to keep them seated in regular chairs.

It's always a privilege to eat here. The standard of cooking is unsurpassed, the flavours mind blowing. The owner is so charming. I've honestly not had better Indian (alright, Nepalese) food in any restaurant anywhere. Ever. Seriously excellent.

This place is one of few Nepali restaurant which has continued to offer a great Nepali food with great service. It was after a long time i revisited this place. Food is still great and people are still just as welcoming. I will certainly go again now i am back in the country. Momocha and kathmandu chicken was really good.

This week I used a new bank card to order a takeaway from Monty's - Two days later someone made two card transactions with my card details for over £1000. That card has never left my side and I have never given the details to anyone.

Been coming here since I was tiny and it’s just as good if not better now. So much choice and everything cooked to perfection. Staff so incredibly friendly and they really know their customers.

Having been to Nepal on many occasions AND living a long way from London , I am always wary of Nepali restaurants in the UK .....I am wrong with Monty's....the welcome was warm and the service very good. Food...outstanding ! hot and sour prawns were fantastic , rice dish flavourful , okra dish , aubergine dish and tandoori paneer were delicious.A decent bottle of wine to wash it down and a generous gesture of brandy at the finish.A great meal and when back in kingston , we shall eat there....well done !!
