Being first time at Old Spitalfields Market we were overwhelmed by wide range of food stalls there. We were lucky to choose pastrami at Monty's Deli. Juicy pastrami, tasty pickles and smooth bread. We will come back again.

This had been on our to-do list for too long. We eventually made it to Monty's Deli in Old Spitalfields Market. Packed with hardly anywhere to sit, we queued and placed our order. What a disappointment. Dry tasteless chewy salt beef on stale rye bread with half a watery pickled cucumber for £13! Lakes which were bland under seriously undercooked in the centre. A challah roll with smoked salmon and something masquerading as egg was disgusting. For £28 (for 2 people) we could have had much nicer food for much less at Beigel Bake in Brick Lane. Truly awful experience. Don't bother.

My New York Jewish husband and I love London, but miss the great food we could so easily get in the enclaves of NYC and Long Island. Well, we have found something even better - Monty’s deli. No exaggeration that the food is excellent. From the perfectly prepared latkes, tender and flavourful (generous) pastrami sandwich, not to mention the chopped liver, like you can’t believe. And then there was the shabbat dinner. You will write home about the chicken that is better than what your mother made - juicy, full of flavour and so moist. The veggies and potatoes are cooked with - yum! Oh, then the kugel-like dessert. And so much food. We’re taking my brother-in-law when he comes from the States next month (the smart professor who travels the world and rates places on their food). He’ll be jealous because he doesn’t live here!

Delicious food.4 of us went for lunch. Liked the sound of most of the starters so we ordered practically one of everything and shared. Loved the chopped liver and toasted challah bread. Pickles were good too. We all opted for the salt beef (nearly as good as my home made) eggs and latkas. Best latkas I've eaten in ages and the eggs cooked to perfection for me, also loved the coleslaw that accompanied it all. Loved my dessert of chocolate style bread pudding, served with vanilla ice cream. All washed down with a peppery but damn good bloody mary and a lemon tea. Service was friendly and pleasant. Thoroughly enjoyed and excellent value for money.

Listen, I know times are tough but when I am paying 13£ for a sandwich I need a solid framework upon which said meal can be built. By limiting the bread slice size so extensively there is therefore less meat, less garnish and therefore less to enjoy. Please source a suitable approximate a5 sized slice to sort out the customer satisfaction and experience otherwise I would be most aggrieved to be similarly disappointed again.

We love traditional deli sandwiches, especially Pastrami and Reubens. However, Monty's pastrami Reubens, the star of the show, was rather lackluster. First of all, it was tiny! A little sandwich and half a pickle on a plate with nothing besides. The flavour of the pastrami was good, but it was "powdery" and dry in texture (overcooked). There also wasn't a lot of it! The pickle it was served with was good and so was the Sauerkraut, but the rye bread was very light (and small). We also had a salt beef Reuben which was nice, but also quite small! Latkes were very good and so were the drinks - coffee and egg cream! We ended with a sesame bagel that wasn't very big nor chewy enough like a traditional bagel. Feeling a bit disappointed because the reviews we read online gave high ratings. On the plus side, the waiters were friendly and helpful.

Very small sandwich, salt beef and pastrami tasted a bit odd. Odd texture to meat. Cheese not grilled but placed on top of sandwich. Service slow and a bit inattentive. Was offered mayo and ketchup with the fries but it never came. You can see the proportion of meat to Sauerkraut in the photo. Pickles too fancy, small and odd. Flavour nowhere close to Brass Rail or Beigel Bake. No English mustard. Shame as was really looking forward. Not cheap!

Salt beef for me, pastrami for my partner - and both were a huge disappointment. The price is close to the best in town - Brass Rail at Selfridges - but the quality and value (from where DO they source the smallest rye loaf?) are nowhere.

Great unobtrusive service. Comfortable atmosphere, delightfully run-down but expensive decor. Salt beef sandwich very nice with good salt beef, not too salty. Only criticism, publicity photographs show big juicy slices, this salt beef carved into very small pieces. This is a shame and makes the sandwich extremely messy to eat. But the chicken soup - a rather salty broth and not resembling my grandma's tasty and somewhat thicker soup. The matzo balls, oh dear, only tasted slightly matzo ballish. Texture and flavour woefully lacking, plus heavy evenly round balls that sank. They should be uneven in texture and much lighter. My grandma's were delicious, she used a bit of ground almonds and fried onion to make them extra tasty. The matzo balls are OK, but people must have no idea of what they are missing.

I was waiting for this place to open. I'm a big fan of NYC-style sandwiches and they did not disappoint. The filter coffee isn't great, would suggest maybe a change of roaster or brewing fresh coffee more often. The biggest disappointment, however, was the owner speaking condescendingly to two elderly locals who came in. Hoxton is in the midst of rapid gentrification, many of these old locals are being pushed out and the owner of Monty's should keep that in mind.

The result is a shatteringly crisp exterior without the interior stodge commonly found elsewhere. The egg-and-onion consisted of chunky egg pieces and chopped spring onion (a refreshing change to the common preparation where there's little to distinguish it from egg mayonnaise), with a thin light mayo dressing, delicately enhanced with just the right amount of horseradish to make this an interesting twist on a classic. The chopped liver was finely ground (I personally prefer a chunkier grind), but perfectly seasoned and very moist: One of the best chopped livers you'll find anywhere. Both of the above were served with chunky challa doorsteps, well toasted, to make these filling starters. We accompanied this with a finely sliced fennel salad, lightly dressed and covered in small capers, which gave a refreshing contrast to the heavy deli fare. Finally my wife and I shared a Reuben Special sandwich - at £13 quite expensive, but again faultlessly executed with home-made rye bread, succulent finely-sliced pastrami and salt beef (corned beef to you Americans), real Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and russian dressing). If quality matters to you, Monty's is Jewish deli with gourmet execution!

We traveled to London from NYC and we live on Jewish delicatessens back home. Montys blew us away. The coleslaw is simply the best there is. Also the decor is top notch.

We read the website very carefully before booking a table for Saturday lunch. We drove 45 minutes across London to discover that there is a market in Hoxton Street, which is absolutely at its peak on Saturdays, causing the road on which the restaurant is situated to be completely closed to traffic. Further, the area is entirely made up of council housing which means there are very, very few parking spaces for non-residents.In short, despite driving round for 15 minutes, after the 45 minutes drive to get there, there was simply nowhere to park and we had to abandon our plans.I rang the restaurant from the car to cancel our table, explaining what had happened. I mentioned to the lady who answered the phone that it would have been helpful if their website highlighted this issue, to which her completely unconcerned reply was, "I thought everyone knew about Hoxton market." Not if you live a 45 minute drive away you don't, love.

Had an exceptional pastrami sandwich. Excellent menu, attentive staff at an affordable price. If you are in the neighborhood, make sure to stop by. Opens at 11:00 am, and have a great selection of bagels.

4 of us - 1 salt beef sandwich was really liked, 1 salt beef Reuben was liked but thought both sandwiches could be bigger, not quite as shown on website, 2 turkey schnitzels were both completely dry and over cooked. Why they should have been over cooked is a puzzle as there were only 5 other people in there, hardly busy! We travelled about an hour to get there, would only get a sandwich again if passing.

Cool little place to stop and grab a bite in Hoxton. Staff are attentive when prompted and food is tasty. Had the French toast which was melt in the mouth gorgeous-v indulgent. Only thing I would change is no coffee refills in keeping with the New York theme. Would recommend.

I recently saw a clip of Tom Kerridge at Maltby market when he met Mark of Montys Deli and thought I'd hunt out the deli when next in the area. I wasn't disappointed when I ordered the monster Reuben Special made up of the delis own salt beef and pastrami. Very worthwhile making the effort to find this place, I'll certainly be heading back for lunch whenever I can.

Ate brunch here and thoroughly enjoyed it. My companion and I had a pastrami Rueben sandwich, the salt beef hash and a side of pickles. All the food was very nice and the portions are a good size. The pickles were not what I expected – I wanted a plate of gherkins, but ended up with various pickled vegetables which looked nice and colourful but were not clear on the menu.Overall I thought it was ok value for money. I would’ve said good if a service charge had not been added to my bill which is something I hate seeing in this country, I don’t believe our server went above and beyond to earn this.I liked the décor of the restaurant and how they’ve kept it in the original style even leaving the broken tiles on the walls. I made a reservation online beforehand but still ended up on a small cramped table up front with everyone else when there were plenty of the much more desirable booths empty.Don’t drive here if you can avoid it as the street outside is closed for a market on weekend and parking’s an expensive nightmare.Overall I would eat here again and recommend it to others.

At last got to try...been meaning to since it opened...so went with my Domestic Manager. Will start with my negatives..they had sold out of Latkes (Tears of dismay!) and my Domestic chicken soup is better...Monty;s needs much more chicken flavour!! But ...the Reuben Special and the Braised Brisket, both on their own bread were fantastic,as was the Cucumber Salad.Another nice touch...a girl came in with a dog on a leash and both were served...she with her order and the pooch with a bowl of water. Not too many eateries do this!! Service was fast and staff efficient and friendly.Prices very acceptable. Will be back to try other bits of the menu,,,,but will phone first to book some latkes!! (For those who do not know, latkes are a kind of Potato-based Pancakes ...go and try for yourself!!).

Loved this restaurant. It was originally a Butchers Shop and then a Bakers. They have kept the original decor including a bread making machine. Friendly staff and good service. The food is delicious with enormous portions. The latkes are to die for. Don't come here if you're on a diet! We had starters, mains, wine and lager and the bill, with service came to £70.00. Very reasonable. I think you have to book.

My partner and I had planned a trip to London and was keen to look for somewhere to eat either lunch or an early dinner. I often use Timeout.com to look at reviews and recommendations. There was a section that particularly caught my eye 'The best new restaurants in London' I had a look through and came across Monty's. The thought of an authentic Jewish pastrami was not to be missed. Even though he is a nonpracticing Jew my partner does come from a large Jewish family and we just had to try it, we are meat lovers and appreciate a decent sandwich. We booked our table with ease via opentable and were expected at 1 pm, we happen to be a few mins late! But this was not a problem, we were greeted by the manager Mark and whilst our table was being made ready we were offered a seat at the bar and we enjoyed a glass of cold beer and the rum and shrub cocktail. After about 10 mins our table was ready and we were promptly seen too. The food came to us fast and hot. The portion size is massive and worth the price but overall it would be a treat for us as two sandwiches, too sides and drink came to over £50. The atmosphere was great and the restaurant is aesthetically very nice. We would definitely make the trip again and I will be recommending to everyone. I look forward to returning.
