Monks Yard in South Somerset

Disappointing, I had a small black americano which was fine, but my partners latte was cold.He didn't want to make a fuss so drank it straight down. We then waited over 40 mins for our 2 breakfasts. I had bacon poached eggs and toast, was hoping at £8.95 there would be 2 pieces of toast, but only one cold piece, bacon ok, but one poached egg solid. My partner had similar, but scrambled eggs. His toast was also cold.

Really friendly great huge pots of tea and quality breakfast could find no faults the decoration featured local artists which was of interest

Lovely place to eat and great atmosphere. Service can be a little slow though. Plenty of parking but you may have to reserve a table as it can get very busy

We are regulars here as we live locally and often meet up for coffee and cake. Today I booked a table for afternoon tea for 3, for a special treat/celebration for my sister and niece. The staff were very accommodating despite it being short notice. The food was perfect, a lovely selection of sandwiches, delicious sausage rolls, cakes and scones with cream and jam. The staff are always very friendly and polite. It is our favourite place to meet and today didn’t disappoint. We will be back again very soon!

We stopped here en route to Torquay and had a lovely breakfast, food was very tasty and hot. Very friendly staff. The cakes looked delicious, so much so we decided to stop there on our journey home. So sampled the lovely Victoria sponge, the coffee cake was beautiful too, homemade. Great coffee too. A lovely spot plenty of parking and a really nice craft shop opposite where we browsed and I bought a present for my friend’s birthday. Worth a visit. A very popular place.

Super stop for lunch just minutes from A303. Lovely freshly made sandwiches, good selection of food, cakes and drinks. Staff were friendly and helpful, carrying drinks out to the table in the garden and offering to get a bowl of water for our dog. Lots of tables both inside and out.

I used one of the conference rooms for a week and found the facilities excellent. The conference staff were helpful and friendly. There is also a restaurant on site the food is delicious I tried a few different lunches all were presented well and i was blown away with the taste of all the dishes I tried. The staff were also helpful and super efficient.

We booked a small conference room for a family celebration of my late mother’s life. From the initial email enquiry to the afternoon itself, the service was exceptional. The food provided for the buffet was absolutely delicious and plenty of it. The catering team really did us proud. I mentioned when booking that one guest was gluten intolerant so the buffet choice for him would be suitable, as he could eat the salmon choice and salad. On the afternoon of the celebration, the catering staff provided a gluten free quiche, gluten free bread and a gluten free cake especially for this guest. This was completely unexpected and really appreciated. So pleased we chose Monks Yard for our family celebration.

We live locally. Looked online and thought it looked great. So we gave it a go one Thursday. Big disappointment. Staff didnt know anything.when we enquired about any specials on the slightly grumpy server asked the chef who told her "some sort of quiche ". Brilliant. We went for bbq chicken burgers. It arrived on a wooden chopping board. These arent 'quaint' or 'rustic' in my opinion and Im of the belief these are unhygenic. It was also too small so i couldnt cut anything up or use it as I would a plate. My partners burger oozed out over his board dripping fatty juice onto his lap! When ordering I hadnt realised my chicken burger would come covered in shredded pork? Which was stone cold, gelatinous fatty bits covered in a bbq sauce. I dismantled the burger to removed it all after my oral relexes ejected a blob. The fries arrived rock hard and stone cold. (Im not surprised as I could see them from our table, sat on the side for 10 minutes). It wasnt that busy and we were one of the first to order lunch. The onion rings were too overdone to even get a knife or fork into to cut. The colslaw was cheap shop bought. The bun was soaked in juice from the topping so a wet pappy mess, imposible to pick up to eat as a burger. It all tasted a bit of off fat. I had 1/4 of a slice of tomato in mine with a few leaves and masses of bbq sauce ( which was not very nice). All in all I thought it noisy. Disorganised. And not up to my expectations. Will not go again.

Excellent breakfast in lovely setting. Called here after seeing good number of positive reviews and was staying in area. I had a full English breakfast- excellent quality ingredients and perfectly cooked. Wife had smoked salmon and scrambled egg - again good quality ingredients and just as she liked it. Coffee excellent and large pot of tea for the wife. Service good, everywhere clean, including toilets and friendly staff. Plenty of room and good choice of food

We enjoyed a beautifully presented Afternoon Tea at Monks Yard with both our sets of elderly parents. The scones were so light and the cakes and sandwiches were delicious. The waiting team were kind and helpful. Thank you for a lovely time.

I popped in for breakfast this morning and sampled your delicious musli! It was absolutely divine, super creamy and satisfying with tasty strawberry’s and honey on top. A very generous portion. I’ve also sampled lots of other yummy goodies recently including your fry up and breakfast bap! All super tasty! Cafe is spotless and clean! Excellent coffee and they have a wonderful selection of freshly baked cakes / danish . The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the staff are lovely ! Having a sneaky peek at other people's plates of food, the meals look excellent aswell . It's a great find!

We went there for lunch which was lovely. I had a ham and cheese sandwich which was amazing. It came with crisps and a small salad which was so beautifully presented, with a lovely dressing. Staff very friendly and helpful. We also go there for a coffee as it’s the best coffee around.

Visited on Saturday with 3 friends including one who raved about this place. What makes Monk Yard stand out is the amazing service. Everyone was so cheerful and helpful. Even the younger members of staff had gumption and weren’t “zombies”, they actually talked to you! Food was delicious, hot and tasty and filling. Really nice atmosphere. Shame the weather wasn’t great else we would have sat outside in the beautiful surroundings. x

Super friendly, with DELICIOUS food - every size of plate available, from snacks and pastries up to full plate of burger, big salads etc. my kids said “best burger ever” (the chicken Caesar burger) and “best restaurant ever”. Definitely avoid the Burger King and Gregg’s nearby and drive the extra 2 mins to here.

I have been going to MY for years, the meals are always excellent, the service is good, front of house girls always smiling and you get such a warm welcome, If your in Ilminster the Monks Yard is the place to stop.

Stopped here whilst journeying from home to a get away weekend. Mentioned in the Extra Mile. Minutes from the main A303 but certainly not the usual services next to the main road. Excellent food, staff warm friendly and helpful. Will certainly be adding this to our journey next time we are passing.

We met family there for lunch. Plenty of parking but the cafe was very busy (always a good sign!). Clean toilets and free Wifi. A nice selection of food and drinks. You have to go up to the counter to order your food but it is brought to your table when ready. The food was very good and served nice and hot. We would recommend booking a table as the cafe was very busy. Well worth a visit and we shall be returning again.

We went for breakfast in this highly rated cafe. The coffee was absolutely perfect, simply the beat. The breakfasts, one full English, was excellent but the three poached eggs with bacon on toast were rather disappointing. Of six eggs four had hard yolks and the other two were on the cusp. Shame as we had had fantastic poached eggs in a couple of other Somerset locations. So, we'll got again and just have full English all round.

This is 1 of the better Full English breakfasts we have consumed locally!! Good quality local produce. Would definitely recommend and visit again. Couple of minor pointers for future reference...1 sausage and egg is not substantial for a person with a larger appetite. We were seated in the ‘sanctuary’ as hadn’t pre-booked a table (didn’t realise the establishment was so popular for early morning breakfast) & it’s quite shut off from the rest of the venue so not monitored by staff adequately enough. Service, although was friendly, lacked professionalism in places & the ‘Brunch’ menu options were poor.

Long wait for coffees once ordered. One slice of thin toast served with scrambled eggs didn't seem good value.Later in week we returned but again had a very long wait for drinks when only 2 tables were occupied.We've noticed the standards slipping over our last few visits so it looks like time for us to find a new venue.

Don’t like to put down a local business, but took my kids out for lunch for my daughters birthday. Had booked a table in advance. They could not find the booking so we’re put on a table in what can onlyBe described as an office at other end of the building. Turns out they didn’t check the availability when they took my booking and had written my number down wrong so couldn’t tell me.I suppose I was already not impressed so may have coloured the rest of the experience.My daughter who is vegetarian ordered a vegetable satay panini. It had small bits of ham on it when it arrived which weren’t supposed to be there and had obviously got contaminated from another plate. SoIt had to go back to be remade.I ordered a ploughman’s. It had the tiniest amount of leaves from a standard cheap bag of salad. A slice of very ordinary packet ham and a small bit of cheese. Just was very poor with low quality ingredients. I wasn’t made to feel that they were particularly sorry about both the booking mistake or the ham on the vegetarian meal. They made no offer of anything to make amends - just paid in full because in the end needed to leave and as we were in an office down end of building it was hard to get anyone’s attention.

we visited today (Wednesday) on what we thought was the hottest day! We needed somthing cool and refreshing! We ordered 2 of there smoothies, the berry blast and the sunshine! A great choice indeed! The smoothies came out in good time! Followed by 2 sandwiches. Where do I start with the sandwiches? The bread was freshly baked local bread and lovely and thick! The waitress told us that the bacon in our BLT was also local! We were very impressed, after reading the last few reviews we were very surprised! We recieved our order in good time! With everything going on with covid-19 we allow our selfs extra time due to expecting to wait or que but in this case it was not needed! We believe that people in hospitality deserve extra credit having to do there day to day job with extra procedures being put in place making their job harder! We highly recommend giving this place a go! We will be returning! :D

Came here for 4 teas and a tuna sandwich. Waited half an hour for the teas and a further 20 minutes for the tuna sandwich. Make sure you have plenty of tine in your hands if you’re visiting - services leaves A LOT to be desired.

We ordered lunch 20 minutes after we sat down as it’s all table service, then our order was x2 ciders & x2 panni’s. The drinks took 30 minutes to come and food took 55 minutes to arrive, as you can read the service was appalling and will not be attending again :(

Visited this cafe today and ordered a coffee and cake. The only cake available other than a scone was a chocolate brownie. We opted for the brownie. What mistake. It was the worst brownie I have ever eaten, solid, didn’t taste of chocolate and not nice at all. The coffee was okay but the tea was weak and had a peculiar taste. This is not a cheap place to eat and although the location is nice and the staff pleasant I would not go again.

Great service and an amazing breakfast I dined outside with my best friend all covid safety measures in place. Breakfast was hot not greasy the veggie sausages will absolutely yummy . The staff were friendly and there hospitality was excellent. A great cappuccino too.

Monks Yard is our cafe of choice whenever we feel like treating ourselves. Whether you just want a coffee and piece of their great cake, or whether you want a meal, the menu is varied and the food is always served with a lovely smile. It is spotlessly clean, spacious and importantly in these times, the tables are well spaced out. If I had one small niggle it is that the cafe closes far too early and last orders for food at 3.30 means those out for a tea-time snack have to be quick off the mark. That's the same for most cafe's though which I always find rather strange. Can't wait to be back at Monks Yard enjoying an Americano and a slice of the gluten free lemon cake!

Had a bowl of porridge on a recent visit and it was truly excellent....creamy and just enough sweetness. The coffee was good and my partner rated the cooked breakfast. Will certainly be returning.

Been coming regularly ever since they opened over the road. Recently the menu has contracted and has ceased to offer pleasant seasonal surprises. It is now so basic and one can find the same things in many other outlet. Today it finally excelled itself by having no fish ( substituted fish cakes with Picalilli and gerkins) no chips at all - run out of potatoes, no butter with a very banal plowmans with a rather dried out lump of cheddar, supermarket thin ham, and overly thick bread. The staff were very inobservant leaving tables full of dirty crockery even after clients had left. It felt old, tired and unloved; its lost the bustle and upbeat style of yesteryear. I doubt we will be going there again, a pity as it is wheelchair friendly. It used to be do much more fun!!!

Just off the A303 is an amazing restaurant. Comfy bucket seats and plenty of space. No one in a hurry, we took an hour to have a coffee each. £2.50 each. They advertise themselves for conference facilities, meet and greet etc. The menu is large and extensive.

Just returned from a lovely evening at Monks Yard. They do special evening menus occasionally and tonight was their Valentines Day event. The starters were great, catering for all tastes. I had the fish cake which was delicious. Served on a piquant salad of cucumber with homemade piccalilli, it was perfect. My husband’s pate actually came with enough toast! Rare in most places! The seafood sharing platter consisted of whitebait, crispy salt & pepper squid and huge prawns and was great value. More than enough for 2. I don’t normally eat pudding but as it was inclusive I did! My husbands chocolate brownie served hot in a mug came with salted caramel ice cream and caramel sauce and was in spite of the ingredients, not overly sweet. Very well balanced. My white chocolate mousse with blackberries & blackberry ice cream was a delight. Lovely menu and well worth going out despite the awful weather.

Visited on a busy day. Food was running out but husband's panini was delicious. Mother's salmon sandwich was too deep to eat (bread incredibly thick). Obviously a favourite for mums and toddlers but I think a children's play area would be sensible. Lacking in ambience.

We called into Monks Yard on our way to Ilminster for a morning cup of coffee. We found the place a little devoid of character and the coffee was served in very small mugs and actually wasn't great tasting. We could see breakfasts being served look great, so perhaps more an eating place. It felt to us however that it was the place to be seen, rather than a place for a good coffee and chat.

Newish find for me, when doing lengthy journeys using the A303. Excellent friendly environment, and a mere 2 minutes from the 303. Extensive range of light meals, good ingredients and flavours. I've been twice, so far. The service is prompt, and the building is a refurbished barn - I think; the loos are modern and very clean. No wonder Alastair Sawday recommends it.

Visited Monks Yard today for Beans on Toast and a pot of tea. Charged £2.40 for the tea which is fine, however was charged £5.50 for one slice of toast with beans. I was on the understanding that it would be 2 slices for this cost. When questioned the staff about this, I was informed that I could have another slice at extra cost. This is most expensive cafe for Beans on Toast I have ever visited bearing in mind a very large proportion of other restaurants provide 2 slices as standard. I informed the staff that I would not be returning again with these prices.

This is a lovely building with lots of outdoor space. The cafe itself is large with lots of tables, but acoustically it is dreadful. I appreciate their attempts to rectify this, but it would make for a very hard time if you have a hearing impairment.

Called in for a coffee on way home from Devon and ended up with excellent Sunday roast which was cooked to perfection. Beef locally sourced and plenty of it accompanied by crisp, fluffy roast potatoes and a dish of three vegetables along with shredded leaks in a white sauce, all delicious. The price was very reasonable at under £12. Monks Yard is an old monastery and a beautiful venue for a coffee, snack or mains.

Met a client here after a training course and we had a quick bite to eat. A lovely cosy place with a warm welcome from the staff. The place was busy and buzzing. I had a ploughman’s lunch that was delicious and my client had a panini that they also very much enjoyed. Would highly recommend.

Had to “waste” some time waiting for our car to be ready. Popped in for a “light lunch”. I had a wonderful ploughmans and my wife enjoyed a smoked salmon dish. Both were delicious, beautifully presented by a very friendly team of ladies.

Monks Yard is my favourite cafe, I can’t stop bringing friends. The service is always warm and welcoming, it’s clean and tidy, there’s a nice picnic area outside and they also have wonderful vegan options (not the standard hummus and falafel!). It’s all reasonably well priced and there’s free parking too. I can’t fault it.

Just popped in for a coffee & very nice, very friendly & helpful staff. A lot of people came in & were having food from the breakfast menu, it looked very good. Would visit again when in the area.
