Great place, great views poor food. Simple things like the chips were super greasy floppy and un appetising - this has been commented on by previous reviewers so why haven’t they improved this !

My friend treated me to a Spa morning and Sunday lunch at the restaurant here. We live locally but had never been here before for lunch. It is rather daunting it being a golf club with lots of rich members who are there regularly. It's a weird mix of people when you're not there for golf and you're dressed in your spa gear or dinner clothes and there are others in golf clothes drinking pints. However, despite this, the Sunday lunch that we had was lovely and the roast potatoes were insane! The truffle and mushroom soup to start also super tasty.

Disappointing. My Date ordered Sea Bass which looked terrific. I had a medium rare Sirloin that arrived steamed, grey and medium...at best. Chips were underdone oven chips. Service was good, and atmosphere was nice. Truthfully, if it wasn't a 1st date, I would have sent it back, but I didn't want to appear difficult.

Attended a family meal at Machynys on a Friday night for my sister's birthday. We entered and went straight upstairs, and our table was ready laid and we sat down straight away.We were approached by a waitress who asked if we would like to make a drink order. When my sister asked for a cider, she replied with "Bloody marvelous!" My sister shot a shocked look at me, and I shot one back. As she finished taking our order, she once again exclaimed "Bloody marvelous." Not appropriate language at all for an apparent 5* restaurant. We made a food order, and my girlfriend asked her more about the cauliflower dish. She replied with "It's just cauliflower, just cauliflower." Not a great description of the meal, but my girlfriend ordered the "just cauliflower" regardless. After a good 10 mins, she returned to report that the kitchen was out of that meal and she had to order something else. Not great communication between chef and the waiting staff. The starters came and went, very nice soup and bread platter. After the starters went, we sat waiting for our mains. Our table was booked for 7:30, and we were still waiting for our mains at 8:50. Not sure if this was a ploy to get us to buy more drinks, but we watched pretty much every other table around us eat and leave. Our food was really good, my father said that despite the small portion, the meal was outstanding. My sister's steak came out not cooked to her liking, but she ate it regardless. My salad was great, my girlfriend didn't enjoy her substitute meal but it's not exactly what she was after so that's understandable. Overall, our meals were good.We ordered four desserts, and they came relatively promptly, sans cutlery. My father felt the need to go and grab a member of staff to get cutlery. Great desserts to be fair. When we were reviewing our bill, we saw we were charged for the cauliflower meal instead of the meal that my girlfriend had to choose as a substitute, which was a very pleasant surprise. The cauliflower meal was the cheaper of the two which was a very nice gesture. Overall a good meal, staff could be better trained in menu items and table etiquette. We expected better but we will probably come back for another occasion.

Took some colleagues and a client for dinner to Machynys Brassierie. Great location and views out of the window. Good atmosphere inside and very friendly service. Ordered the grilled Sea Bass with prawns, white cabbage and fennel. The fish and prawns were well cooked but overall the dish was very dry and needed some sort of sauce. I didn't complain out of politeness however when reviewing the menu the next day I realised that dish was supposed to be served with an olive oil infusion which was missing. Other than that no major complaints, prices were reasonable. Two courses and plenty of drinks (3 or 4 each) came to £40 per head.

This is a pleasant eating location with, on sunny days, spectacular views from its upper floor location across the greens to a variety of ponds with Grey herons and Mute swans. The parking is more than adequate with spaces for blue badge holders. Access is somewhat 'tight' with relatively narrow doors and a tiny lift (accommodating one wheelchair and 2 people). There is a nice, well-stocked bar with an impressive array of gins and good coffee. The food is served in the bar (with inside and outside tables) and in the restaurant. The menu is identical in both (the only difference is that you can reserve tables in the restaurant). The menu is somewhat limited but the food appears fresh and well-cooked. It's a nice place with comfortable tables and chairs where you can wile away time with friends.

Came here for the first time on a Monday lunchtime with 11 members of my family for a “a la carte” lunch in the restaurant. It was a very hot day and the windows could only be opened about 5 mm. This made the room very hot and stuffy, even though the main doors were open. The restaurant wasn’t very full, but we had to wait ages for our food to be served even though we had pre-ordered. The food, when it did arrive was not what I expected for a “a la carte” The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The setting is excellent with the interior design beautiful but the best thing is the stunning view towards the Gower.

Four of us went for lunch today . Me elderly dad , his brother , my husband and I. It was a good thing I had not read some of the reviews before going as we might have decided on a different venue . I can honesty say that all the negative reviews and the place we went to, felt as if we were in a completely different Restaurant. The staff that served us were extremely pleasant. We all had different things to eat , from soup to the goats cheese , steaks , salmon and lamb chops , followed by cheese and biscuits and crumble . All perfectly cooked . It’s very easy to write negative reviews when you’ve had an experience not to your liking , but i have to say , I had to write this review , because of the experience we had . Having visited Machynys for afternoon tea a year ago to celebrate a colleagues significant birthday and having had a wonderful experience we decided to return as a group to celebrate another colleagues retirement. Sadly, the experience was not to the same standard as we'd previously experienced. The 4 sandwiches were a total of approximately 2 slices of dry bread with the toppings having sat for a few hours in high temperatures - dry ham, a sparing smoked salmon slice, roughly grated cheese - no care had been taken to produce them and they were very disappointing. Plenty of tea and coffee although we had to ask for them to be replenished and no hot water was supplied with the tea which should be a standard addition. As it was such a hot day we were provided with bottles of cool tap water which was refreshing.

Mmm.. this is one of the local raves which was chosen by a friend to entertain a few visitors.. Very disappointed to say the least. I have had bar meals here on many occasions and they have been good, however the restaurant side was over priced and mediocre. Par fried chips when your paying £14/15 for a bit of chicken.. not my idea of a kitchen that cares about what they dish out. The setting is great, however this shouldn’t justify hiking the prices up for the food..

Having eaten here on several occasions over a number of years, my most recent meal there was a disappointment. We were a large group, but on a fairly quiet midweek evening, and our main courses arrived almost two hours after being seated at our table (some, but not all of the group had starters). I had the mixed breads with oils to start and this was not of the standard expected-none appeared to be home-made and included (cheap) toasted sliced bread (?!), which I think is a bit of an embarrassment (and a cheek!) for this kind of establishment and priced at £5.25! The Cajun chicken salad main was very uninspiring/bland and expensive for what it was. It’s such a shame that a lovely venue in a beautiful location has let its standards slip. A real disappointment, and I would have marked it lower were it not for the surroundings.

We have been coming here for years and on our recent visit both the menu choice and food quality had sadly gone downhill. In general, all meals were overpriced. There was a lack of good choice - nothing inspiring. My fillet steak was over cooked (ordered medium rare and it came well -done ). All of our groups chips looked very tired and reheated- not freshly cooked. The crushed potatoes with the salmon were just some sad tired boiled potatoes served in a bowl next to it. The burger bun was dry and fell apart. The most laughable dish was the beetroot bruschetta (a starter) - served on a small piece of greasy thin white sliced bread with minuscule beetroot squares - terrible £6:00 !! - sorry machynys - super disappointing and expensive

As usual the food totally let down the whole day. The spa experience was wonderful, treatments and staff fantastic, highly recommend. Such a shame about the cold, bland food, sweet potato wedges brown and crispy on the outside, uncooked inside, cold, dried out pork and coleslaw that had been heated, stuck to the side of the pot. Furthermore our food was booked for 12 o’clock, our order had got lost so waited over an hour and finally had our food at 1.10 pm, our treatments were booked at 1.30pm! Over the years we have loved this venue which always scored highly on all counts. Our visit this week was very disappointing and could be our last. As usual, the setting and service were excellent but the new menu was most disappointing. Gone is the special lunch menu which was always innovative and extremely good value. Many of the "ordinary" dishes which were available were more expensive than one would pay for lunch at other comparable venues. Additionally, as it was the only menu there was a lack of any more interesting or exciting dishes.

Mainly as we didn’t actually have any food there. Or even a drink. Even though we were hungry and very keen to enjoy an evening out, the loud thumping beat music was almost painful to listen to. The barman - the only one of the staff doing any work, even if having a customer was clearly a bore - could not have been more charmless about turning it down, so we left. Judging by the surprising number of empty tables for a Friday night, we might not have been the only ones to decide it wasn’t for them.

At £20 a head we were expecting something tasty, but after waiting almost an hour for our food to come, what we got was a combination of bland overcooked food. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous . No matter what the weather the view is sensational. I had a lovely spa day with a group of friends but can only give three stars for lack of vegan choices. On arrival I found out that they didn’t have soya milk for coffee. In 2018 it is very unusual for a high end venue not to have at least one type of plant milk. No apologies were made by staff and I was told that it ends up being thrown out after being used for one person. When you spend £65 on a spa day I think a £1 carton of soya milk could be swallowed in the costs as there are so many long life options. I really appreciate that the kitchen offered vegan alternatives with the meal but they were simply the regular options with out the meat ie linguine without the salmon. Buttered mushrooms without the butter. Fair enough but for the same price?

Because we were in the area we decided to go to Machynys for lunch. We have been several times and love the bar and restaurant. At the restaurant reception we asked if there was a table for 2. Without any eye contact or answering my question re availability, the lady turned to a waiter colleague and called out across the restaurant ‘I have 2 walk ins here, put them on table x’ I was quite astonished by this as I have always found the service previously to be personal and exceptional. We were taken to our table but had to call the waiter over after about 5 minutes to ask for a menu. During this time he was talking to the lady at reception- the restaurant was not particularly busy. Having received the menu we then had to call him back to take an order, which we’d have preferred not to have to do. However everything else was excellent- the menu was great, the food was excellent and the surroundings are what draws us back - absolutely stunning. Previously, excellent service has been a strong feature of our experience so we will definitely return as today’s poor service experience was not representative of the restaurant. We will be back.

I booked a blissful spa day for my mother, daughter and myself for a mother's day treat. Having read the reviews I was very excited; however should have gone with my initial gut reaction from the first phonecall to book. The young lady was quite rude, I thought maybe she was just having a bad day. We arrived this morning with to check in and was immediately asked to go to the brasserie for a refreshment. We opted for the juice. As my mother is gluten free we asked the manager about her options and reconfirmed her dietary requirements. He was very friendly and incredibly helpful. We returned down stairs to use the spa facilities and for our booked treatments. My mother was asked to sign a disclaimer stating she was advised not to use the booked facilities due to her asthma. This was the first we were advised she was unable to attend. Having paid a lot of money for the day it came as a surprise. She signed and we enjoyed the facility. She loved the massage. We had lunch included so dressed in a very busy dressing room that was very intimidating and went upstairs. We waited 55 minutes for our food to be served which when it did eventually arrive was tepid. We were so hungry at this stage we just ate it. The roast potatoes tasted like they'd been cooked the day before, the suede mash was like baby food and very runny as for the cauliflower cheese it was brown. However it was to find somewhere that could provide a gluten free option for my Mother. We waited again for dessert overall the meal took 2.5 hours. To say it was slow was an understatement and honestly we felt as a spa package client second rated. The service was hostile and very unfriendly. A treat left with disappointment.

Came here for the first time on Friday for a cuppa with friends. It was ok, but I must say, it didn't live up to it's hype. The staff weren't exactly friendly apart from one waiter, and I didn't hear a word of Welsh, which was extremely disappointing. I ordered a snack, which they didn't seem overly enthusiastic to give me (it was about 3.30pm and the menus were still on the table). I ordered breaded mozzarella with garlic mayo. I had to wait a very long time until I received it. I even went up to the bar to enquire about my order as I was concerned they'd forgotten. The lunch menu wasn't great. I expected a better choice considering the reputation of the place to be honest. The snack I did have was very tasty though. A generous portion size too. Nice enough views. Not as good as somewhere like the Cliff Gwbert, but still nice. What surprised me was how busy it was, especially on a Friday afternoon when I'd assume most people would be at work. I was talking to a regular and she said it was always like this. The brasserie is certainly not somewhere you'd go to relax. It's not a relaxing atmosphere. One good thing is you can have free refills if you order the filter coffee, which is just as well as at a little under £3 for a cup that isn't particularly large, it would have been a very expensive cup of coffee! I'd come here again, but only if it wasn't my choice to come here. As I said, it's OK, but not fantastic.

There was a choice of the bar snacks menu or the Christmas menu. I chose the venison portage which was very tasty. My friends chose duck. The duck did not compare, in the view of one friend, to the duck in Bistro Pierre (Mumbles) as the sauce rather let it down. We all had profiteroles for dessert. The menu stated that the chocolate sauce would be hot/warm. It certainly wasn’t. The profiteroles weren’t long out of the freezer!!!! A nice spot for lunch - we've been several times before but never reviewed it. Lovely light dining room and bar, great views and nice muted colour scheme. The chicken with wild mushroom sauce, which we both had on our most recent visit, was very good, rich but not overpowering. My seafood risotto starter was OK, plenty of fish, but a bit too much sauce in the dish and a little salty for my taste. Appreciated a jug of iced water with lime segments being brought without having to ask for it, and the service was both fast and friendly. However £37 for 2 courses for 2 plus coffee (no drinks) is too pricey for it to be more than an occasional treat.

Mum and I popped into the bar after lovely spa treatments. The atmosphere as always was relaxing and inviting, with great views of the golf course and estuary and the service was very good. I always enjoy visiting Machynys for drinks or lunch when i'm in the area.

Food and service excellent, I choose the sirloin steak and my wife choose the sea bass, both were on thet 3 course set menu ( £7 supplement for the steak). We ordered extra vegetables with the meal which I advise. Overall a much better experience than previously, the new chef has certainly raised the bar.

Disappointed today. We had to send the Cumberland Sausage meal back as far too salty, the service was good in that they served conventional sausage and mash instead but again way too salty. I had a light bite; onion soup which was quite frankly tasteless. Not up to the standard that we have previously enjoyed.

We've come here on a number of occasions in the past, and enjoyed every visit. We called in for lunch at the bar and were lucky to get a view over the 18th across the estuary, Penclawdd has never looked so nice in the rain. We were warned that the kitchen was busy but our meals arrived in good time. My wife's chicken in mushroom sauce was delicious, and my beef and ale pie would have satisfied Desperate Dan, you certainly didn't have to hunt for the meat in the gravy.

Great location. Golf club with bar and restaurant open to the public. Also gym and health spar. Nice place to visit for brealfast lunch or dinner, or just for coffee. The views from the restaurant and bar area are just Fab. With log fire burning through winter months.

Admittedly we called towards the latter end of lunchtime, but that should not excuse the abyssmal offering that was presented to us. My husband ordered the chicken curry, which arrived as dried-up chicken in a watery sauce, whilst my rarebit was served on rock-hard bread with a revolting lumpy sauce and a bit of watercress on the top. Possibly the worse meal we've ever had, and not cheap. I did mention my disappointment to the waitress and she promised to advise the kitchen, but we couldn't get out of there quick enough!

I visited yesterday with two friends to have lunch after having a treatment at the Spa. We were not disappointed, it was beautiful. Gorgeous views, wonderful service and gorgeous food. I had the beef and Yorkshire dinner and the Creme brûlée. It was delicious and well presented. I would definitely recommend.

Pleasant surroundings overlooking the golf course. Quite a full menu which caters for most palates. Decent wine list too. Staff attentive but not obtrusive. Food itself is tasty and well presented. A good all round experience.

Can only review the bar meals as did not eat at the restaurant. We both had the house burger and fries. Good quality meat in the burger but not seasoned. Miniscule portion of chips. Nothing else on the plate. It was crying out for some salad and/or coleslaw. Two burgers and two drinks for just over thirty quid. Did enjoy the views over the Loughour Estuary and staff were nice.

Visited today with a group of friends. We were going to treat ourselves to a lunch. The chicken curry had gone down well on their last visit so we decided to have it again today. That was probably the worst decision we could have made.

Apart from good waitress service, this is the worst afternoon tea I have had. Dry scones, shop bought jam tart cut in half with a blueberry placed on top, melting rocky road, and less than fresh finger sandwiches with very skimpy amount. Will not be returning.

We have visited and eaten in Machynys for a long time. Its a lovely place with great atmosphere & food. However, now I have a young baby we can no longer visit. On our last visit for my 40th birthday lunch, we sat down and was about to order our food when we were approached and told we could not stay!!! Very disappointed. The man was very polite and explained that it was the communities policy not to allow children under 4 on the premises and we should have been stopped at the door!!. It was lunch time and we really didn't see the issue. I think this policy is out of date and certainly lost our custom. Bearing in mind children over the age of 4 can be very noisy and on that day a child was running around whilst our baby was quiet in my partners arms. We are responsible parents and if my baby become noisy and unhappy I would leave if I could not settle her. As stated we were very unhappy and over the years spent a lot of money on the premises, having large groups of family meals to a cozy evening meal for 2. PS if the club captain walked in with a baby in his arms would he have been asked to leave!!!

Recently we went to machynys for breakfast on our way to the airport . There were six of us eating 5 having full breakfast. However my son has an allergy to nuts and we asked if he could have only bacon and eggs - this wasn't on the menu but as they are ingredients used in the breakfast you'd think it wouldn't be a problem . The server who took our order behind the bar made us feel as if we'd ordered something really obscure and huffed as we placed the order. He reluctantly took the order and we all had our breakfasts , the full breakfasts were nice and enough but my son who is 19 had two rashers of bacon and two eggs , nothing else on the plate and was charged more than the price of the full breakfast! Almost £12 !! Won't be going there again.

Absolutely beautiful food and drinks, service with a smile & nothing is too much trouble. Philippe is a credit to you and always so funny & friendly. Just a shame the spa let you down on this occasion. Upstairs and downstairs are like two different worlds. I visit at least twice a month and would never do a spa day again. Visiting for food only from now on. There's plenty of better spa deals available. Thanks Phillipe!

Made a call here after a family gathering, approx 15 adults. The bar was already busy, but we were all served promptly and a food order taken. Unexpectedly the food all came together and was served hot. Some of the party felt it was a little over priced but most felt that the surroundings and atmosphere more than made up for that. Would I go back .. yes definitely lovely place to sit relax and enjoy a nice meal.

We booked a table for a special night out, we were not disappointed. We sat outside in the sunshine looking at the spectacular views of the golf course, where we had a drink before going in for our meal. We only had the starter and the main meal, we were too full to have a dessert. All of our meals where delicious, one of us had the scallops which were cold but still tasted lovely. The staff were all very helpful and very pleasant, we will definitely go back again.

Really disappointed at how this place has gone downhill, the menu is very limited for snacks, we decided to share the salt & pepper calamari and I have to say for just short of £9 it was a total rip off, barely battered calamari which were soggy and chunky fries of which some were very hard in the middle. When the waitress brought the meal to our outside table she asked the obligatory "Any sauces" I asked for salt/pepper/vinegar and her reply "Oh I'll see if I can find some" strange reply for a staple of all restaurants I would assume! I was waiting to be asked if all was ok with our meal and was going to politely let them know what had been wrong with it but the same waitress just cleared the table without a word. I decided then it really wasn't worth my effort if they couldn't be bothered. Won't eat here again.

A lab excellent visit this evening with friends. Great food with no wait all meals were timely measured . The service was 100% and very friendly and polite. It’s nice to chat with someone who thrives to deliver first class service. We had a young lady Christina who served us and was excellent. Ours tables were cleared regularly and we always were asked if we were happy and anything we needed.

The meals listed on the Menu and the 'Specials Board' looked promising, but the meals, when they arrived, were very disappointing. Two of us had 'Bacon & Leek Pie' with mixed veg, the latter from what must have been a frozen veg pack. They wrre not 'fresh' veg! The pie itself had 'puff pastry' topping, but very little 'leek and ham' pie underneath. Our guest had a chicken goujons meal, again a disappointment. As she said, 'Definitely over-cooked'! The meals were not cheap! The only + is that the waitress was very polite.

Tried this chippy for the first time in ages. It's been done out which is better but the chips are awful. They stuck to the paper sheets due to amount of grease. Half of them were hard or mushy. I won't be using them again. I'll order online from somewhere else.
