Visited with friends - ordered 3 pints a G&T and 2 Pornstar Martinis The Pornstar Martinis where £8 each which was not a problem however after that tasting the Pornstars the women said that they tasted wrong The girl behind the bar said that it was probably due to Vanilla Essence ? Being used instead of Vanilla Vodka. At no time where we told this when the drinks where being mixed or paid for which is pretty bad to say the least. If the women in the party where not familiar with the taste of the drink then the bar would have got away with this - Apparently according to the lady behind the bar due to Brexit there’s a shortage of Vanilla Vodka which is why vanilla essence was used !! I find this a poor excuse as the local Morrison’s as a example has vanilla vodka in so why can’t the Milton ? It makes you wonder what other cocktails they are mixing without the proper alcoholic drinks in A replacement of 2 Jack Daniels was given but at no time was a refund of the difference in price mentioned which again is very poor, because I am sure 2 x JDs do not equate to £16 Just be aware that they are mixing cocktails without putting the proper ingredients in, without telling the customer or are they lowering the price of the cocktails to allow for the differences

Visited here on reopening night following a major refurbishment of this old pub . Wow .. spectacular transformation. The attention to detail is second to none ! We watched the football game and ordered some bar bites and a panini. Absolutely delicious and an amazing atmosphere. The staff look so smart in their uniforms and were very attentive. We would highly recommend this pub and would definitely visit again. We aren’t local but wish we were ! Well done to all .

Stopped for a drink to get away from the rain. Just stayed for one drink as the pub has a strange ambiance. The back room is a cross between a disco with a big screen and someone’s living room with leather sofa! It’s mainly a mans pub . Drinks are ok and cheap enough. Service is fine. There is a food service area and another snug bar at the front.

Dropped in for midweek lunch. Should have known better as the place was empty. Had a simple meal from the menu listed outside as reduced price to £5 from £8. It was listed as "ham.eggs, chips and peas" but I got only one egg even though I had checked the "eggs" bit. It was served on a VERY small plate and had minute quantities of each item.I ate the lot in two minutes flat and went across the road to a Greggs to buy a pasty to fill up. Back in the pub the toilets were closed, I did not have the patience to ask why this was so. Be sensible and avoid this shabby place.

We were enticed in at lunchtime by the promise of a real log fire. Very nice too. The pub probably wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but it had character and charm. Ridiculously cheap (by which I mean value, not cheap quality) food - a pint and a bacon roll cost approx a fiver, for example. It won't be winning any Michelin stars in the near future but that's not the point. It was obvious that the place had a loyal local clientele which added to the overall atmosphere. We returned in the evening too, because it was nice to sit somewhere where people obviously "belonged" - a far cry from "generic pub chain pub #3,584" which seems to be the norm nowadays.

Three of us visited this pub today for lunch. I ordered the lasagne which came with one slice of garlic bread and small side salad, which was very nice. My mum ordered the battered fish with chips, the fish was obviously frozen therefore not very nice and hard. The worst disgusting thing was my husband ordered the burger deal with a pint, when the barmaid was asked if the burger came with cheese and onions told it did!!!. My husband waited and waited several minutes for his burger to the point we had nearly finished our meal, in the end I asked the waiter where his burger was, waited a few more minutes for him to return stating the burger would be a few minutes. When the burger finally arrived all it was, was a thin burger in a bap no onions or cheese costing £5.50 with a pint. When cut in half the burger wasn't even cooked (pink nearly red) in the middle, I immediately went to the bar maid to complain who appolagiased and returned it to the kitchen. Several minutes later fresh burger returned. OR SO we thought when my husband removed the top bun NOOOO they had only returned his original burger in a fresh bun. (I wish I had taken a photograph) there it was in all its glory bite taken out of it. How disgusting the thought they had placed the burger back onto the grill which had been in my husbands mouth. My question is what about food handling standards do they adhere to these safety standards obviously NOT. Defiently will not be returning.

I honestly dont know how a restaurant can serve this appalling quality frozen food. We ordered fish and chips and burger and chips and you honestly wouldnt give your dog it. The burger can only be described as from a tin, it tasted like it was made from dog food. Three of us ordered fish and chips and when it turned up it, it was nothing more than a cheap, poor quality frozen fish (deeply fried) with a filling that certainly wasnt fish. The whole meal would have cost £1 to make and that's being generous.

The chips were limp and greasy. My chilli jacket potato was flavoursome, but not enough filling for the size of the potato. Overall a disappointing lunch. The decor was tired looking. My husband and I were visiting Buxton for the day and had no idea where to eat, but as luck would have it we stumbled across the Miltons Head pub , and inside was Jo Jos Bistro!! I ordered steak and chips , which was utterly delicious. Generous portion with home made chips , mushrooms , onion rings and peas! All for £9.95. The steak was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the fish and chips which was equally delicious. Jo Jo came over to us and told us everything is home made and freshly cooked - she herself is a delightful person. There is a very good gluten free menu too - plus all the soups and curries are gluten free. We were so full we very nearly missed having a dessert, which would have been a very big mistake! We ordered Sticky Toffee Pudding - home made of course. Can't really find the words to describe how divine that was - probably the best I have ever tasted. All I can say is if you are in Buxton and want a superb meal at a very reasonable price - go to the Miltons Head in Buxton - you are in for a treat!

In Buxton wet, cold and hungry and have a dog so this place looms out like an oasis and in we went.Bit confusing when you arrive as it is split into a cafe in one room,a front snug and a big back bar/pool room. Wasn't quite sure where we could go with the dog or which areas we could eat in. Anyway found a suitable seat in the big bar room and looked at the menu.Very good choice, pleased to see lots of veggie and other options and nice mix all at very good prices. A waitress who informed us that we needed to order at the bar she was really nice and friendly about it but it didn't seem clear to us when you come in.Anyway to the bar .....it was being run by someone who looked as if he might have been a teddy boy in his younger days bit gruff but pleasant enough. Although seemed somewhat out of his depth with a lunchtime crowd. I got the impression that only variety in his normal orders were pint or half so the concept of trying to take food orders and a wide range of soft drinks was looking to be a bit much for him luckily there were a couple of very switched on young ladies waitresses who kept popping over to explain things to him!Successfully ordered food and it arrived and very good it was too! Good honest food, plenty of it well cooked and tasty - what more do you want from a lunchtime pub?All in all a good experience the service overall was very good, prices great and food very good unfortunately due to driving couldn't sample the beers. Only thing that let it down was that it wasn't clear what was what and the smartness of the cafe room was contrasted with the messiness of the big bar area. All the important bits are there just needs a bit of a final polish to go from good food/pub to great food/pub.Happily recommend and would go back.

This meal was dissapointing to say the least, for 4 meals just pies or liver and a lasagne and 2 teas ,2 coffees we paid the princely sum of 36 pounds not exactly value for money for what we were served the lasagne had a salad ,but the pies and the liver and onions had only mash or chips no veg , not even a few peas. The pies had good amount of filling ,plenty of meatin the stak pie,the chicken and mushroom was in a very thin tasteless sauce but a good amount of chicken.I have tried to be fair in my criticism thats why I have left such detail.

Needed the loos and couldn't find the public ones so took a chance here as we fancied a coffee. Strange little place that has the lay-out of an old pub with the right-hand room made into little cafe The back of the pub has a bar and some of the customers looked as if they had been there since the day before. The toilets were basically clean but very, very outdated. The cafe was strangely decorated like it was stuck in some kind of time-warp. The frothy coffee was served in cups and saucers and tasted quite bland. The menu was pretty basic but it was the dish of the day that did it for me - corned beef hash with mash and pickled cabbage...Bill please! It came stacked on the most delicious bed of cheesy cabbage and leek, my beef was very thick and SO tender, it literally melted in my mouth, crispy Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes and if this wasn't enough, a side dish of fresh vegetables. We order 3x baguettes which to be fair were nice and one of my friends had the mushroom soup. Our waitress just dumped a pile of knives and forks in the middle of the table no service at all. Our baguettes were quite tasty but the soup was oily and had the consistency of pesto. To be fair we got our money back for it but when the kitchen manager came out to see us with a face like thunder and all she said was well everyone else likes it no asking what was wrong no apology just basically making us feel like we were in the wrong customer service non existant and i work in a customer focused industry and soon after a waitress started clearing our table while someone was still eating. So based on todays experience im afraid i cant recommend this place.

The website looks like a convivial country pub but the reality is a pretty tatty greasy spoon cafe. The food is cheap but the price matches the quality. The "quality" sausages in the sausages and mash meal are straight from the industrial food factory. Avoid and don't be fooled as I was.

Visited here 10/07/15 after a gruelling drive with a sat nav from hell and no air con on a hotter than hot day, so we were ready for a good meal. Walked up and the main street couldn't find anywhere that looked too inviting so as is usual went for a pub lunch. The miltos head is a pub of 2 halves a community pub and the side room jo jos for the food. The menu is hand written and the choice is limited, no problems with that because I'd rather they have a limited choice and have the food done well. I had Cumberland sausage and the Missus had steak and ale pie.Mine was a lovely meal and she had the best steak and ale pie I've seen in a while the chunks of meat where massive and no gristle at all with handcut chips, 2 meals for 12 quid. Saw some other meals come out and they looked just as good door step sandwiches fish and chips and lasagne. The foods good and its a pub, with normal pub people so if your looking for hi class dining its a no. If its wholesome food you want it's a yes. And from a woman's point of view... The toilets were clean! (Normally a good reflection on the rest of the business)

I would not recommend this pub for food. The place looked faded and past it's best, however the tables where sticky and the whole place could have done with a good clean. The food I had was very poor, the chips were reheated and uneatable! If you cannot get chips right, it does point to bigger problems.Perhaps just a bad day!

Called here for a drink this afternoon which was well over priced. After paying for the drink we were told we could not sit outside unless we were having a meal. Had we not already paid we would have refused the drinks and gone elsewhere. We had the one drink then went elsewhere had exactly the same drinks costing £1.25 less.

Can't comment on the food, but a couple of real ales on offer. What we sampled was of good quality and would happily return, if in town again.

Needing some lunch, we tried this pub which provided us with a lovely meal of fish & chips. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and the food was freshly cooked to order. Very enjoyable.

My self and my husband was on holiday and thought we would visit buxton. We went for lunch at the miltons head the bistro was called jojos,we had ordered gammon and a burger the meal arrived and i have never seen anything like it. The chips were burnt the eggs looked like they were cooked in dirty oil and the homemade burger looked like it had been cooked years ago the salad was just shoved on a plate and was not fresh. Im all for supporting small business but this one is beyond help.we never ate anything the lady came back and was quite surprised why we hadnt eaten wen we explained she looked puzzled. The only good thing was that she gave us a refund which we didnt expect. The place mats still had food on them and were falling apart. If no one can believe what happened i have the photos to prove it. How they get a 5 star rating i dont know .

Myself & my partner were looking for a reasonably priced pub for a nice lunch & a quiet pint. I must say Miltons Head ticked all the boxes. The lunch menu was not crammed with choice but, there is something on there to cater for all tastes. All the meals were £7 each or 2 meals for £12.We both ordered the gammon & chips. This came with peas, pineapple ring & a fried egg. When the food was served we were amazed & both said "propper chips!".None of your oven chips or french fries here..proper Brown chips the way Mom used to make with a slab of perfectly cooked gammon.I could not fault a thing & would recommend a visit to anyone who enjoys good, real home cooked food in pleasant surroundings.

Paid £17 for 2 sunday lunches which turned out to be dishes of gravy with unidentified bits of food floating about in it.i would have liked my lunch to be served on a plate and my gravy in a jug, everything was soggy and uneatable.we should have complained, but decided just to leave never to return

The pub is on the pedestrianised high street. We ate in the restaurant section. The veggie main course was good as were the veg. I had a pint of Old Golden Hen - very tasty. The service was very good - it has a pleasant 'local' feel but was also welcoming. We'd return.

Called in here today on the off-chance and very glad I did. The barmaid was very friendly as were the other drinkers and diners. A good atmosphere. I then went through to the bistro and had an excellent all day breakfast. Generous helping and cooked just right. Couldn't fault it. As I was eating alone Id rather have eaten in the bar but that's not a practical option unfortunately. I'd definitely go back for more and encourage you to try it too.

The pub itself inside is rather, what shall I say ' rustic '. Typical old inn where wellingtons would not be out of place. We had the Sunday lunch and it was first class. A large portion of tender beef was served on a bed of creamed leeks and potatoes in a large dish, with roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. The veg was served separately, consisting of carrots, with a lovely strong orange taste, and broccoli. The dining room was clean and tidy, it is well worth a visit for the excellent food.

This is a proper Local's pub in the centre of Buxton. The food was ok but not amazing. ok value at £7 a course. If probably not bother to go back there again for food as there was a lot nicer looking places around bug would be nice for a few beers

We stopped here anticipating a nice lunch but how disappointed we were. They were out of the pie so I ordered cod and chips only to get the toughest chewiest piece of fish ever and brown chips which were hard. They'd also run out of black pudding but my husband had the all day breakfast anyway. It was OK but very sloppy. I think the chef must've had a New Years day hangover. The food is appalling. Couldn't wait to get out. Not a nice place. £20 for breakfast, fish n chips and 3 cokes.

This review is quite late but I would like to praise the staff and restaurant, this was the best brunch I have ever had I ordered the chefs pie of the day with a portion of chips and peas, best pie I've eaten in a long time by far! the young blonde waitress was very smiley and helpful, all staff made us feel welcome and nothing was too much to ask for.Good choice of children's menu and dessert as I have a young son, which he enjoyed.

We went yesterday for Sunday dinner. I didn't like the vegetarian option as it has chilli in so asked the waitress if I could have the Sunday roast without meat and vegetarian gravy the lady said this was fine. Our dinners arrived and the food was lovely. The price was about £6 for a small meal and £10.50 for the roast and the vegetarian each. I got an extra Yorkshire with mine. For pudding I had strawberries with clotted cream very nice and the other pudding was chocolate and cherries roulade which was delicious

On entry, it was a little tired and the room off was for diners where the tables wobbled, the placemats like something granny used to use and the whole feel was a of a homey kitchen with no aires and graces. The food was beautiful and presented very nicely. The staff, friendly and the specials board was changed the day after we visited so at least everything is fresh and new.

Hope this isn't against the rules. I work here and just wanted to say thank you for all the comments and feedback. In response to the feedback we are finally having a long overdue makeover and the dining room is currently in the process of being decorated. We now have taken on a new chef and Jo'Jo has returned from her pregnancy. Any food or serviceProblems you may have in the bistro please alert a member of staff and we will do our best to resolve the issues. Again thank you for the feedback and look forward to hopefully seeing you again.

Called in for a quick evening drink as we were passing, and found it to be a bit shabby and in need of a makeover. The lady behind the bar was friendly and chatty with the few locals at the bar, but there were very few customers. We were intrigued by the presence of a pushchair at the bar but no sign of a child during our visit. In short, there are much nicer places in Buxton to eat and drink

This is a fantastic and unique pub set right in the middle of the main shopping centre in Buxton. It is very welcoming and has its own style that I think is lacking in a lot of pubs nowadays. This place pays homage to Elvis and Marilyn and a few other icons along the way! The staff are always really friendly and welcoming and it is a great place to grab a few pints or if you want something more there is 'Jo Jo's Bistro' set mainly in one of the side rooms. This is a beautifully decorated room with ample seating for dining. The menu covers all bases, from sandwiches to full main meals. All the food is home cooked and delicious! I love the pork baguette and the Sunday lunches are great! This place is child friendly and also allows dogs which I think is excellent. If you want a nice proper pub with grub then this is the place to go!!!!

Lunch time stop. We had snacks of beef baguette and toasted sandwich which came with a nicely presented salad. Both very tasty, could have been hotter but side bowl of chips hot and enjoyable. The dining room was a bit dated but clean and tidy. We would call in again. Inexpensive.

Called in the Milton's Head on a bitterly cold lunchtime for a warm and a snack. The pubs front room which would probably be called a snug was warm and welcoming as was the barmaid. A pint of excellent Black Sheep and a half cider were followed with a beef baguette and a Derbyshire Oatcakes filled with ham and cheese. They were both excellent and promptly served.Okay the pub is a little scruffy and could do with a refit but it would lose its old fashioned charm. The only downside was a group of smokers inside the back door of the premises sheltering from the rain which made a trip to the toilet an unpleasant experience.

We had never visited Buxton before and got a bit lost. It was getting late for lunch and we happened on the Milton's Head.It is somewhat tatty but we were welcomed and enjoyed or meals. I had Buxton Oatcakes which turned out to be very pleasant pancakes.my husband ordered a burger which was judged very good. The building is undoubtedly tatty but in the ladies there were soaps, hairspray, hand cream and the usual things one finds in a ladies loo that you have to pay for. The service was friendly and the food served attractively. Over all a good find

The staff were very friendly and quick in taking our orders. The food was good, but I found my Yorkshire Pudding a little to hard. But otherwise a warm and friendly establishment, good food, drinks and value for money.I would certainly visit again.

We made the unfortunate choice of visiting the Miltons Head, based on a previous visit a few years back....wow, had it changed!! A very long wait for the food ordered, my gammon staek was OK, my wifes fish and chips were awful, the fish was just a brown mush, totally inedible. Service was poor and I do dislike being served by a waitress carrying a baby!! We did not pay for the fish and chips!! Whilst we were eating our food we overhead two folks at the next table complain about their sausage and mash, undercooked and cold.... they didnt pay either!

In Castleton for a few days walking and called in at this pub for an early evening meal and a couple of beers. Although not busy when I arrived most tables were reserved but staff managed to find me one . All staff very friendly and helpful, as a solo traveller much appreciated . Had a very tasty burger with added stilton cheese , and a couple of pints of an excellent Black Sheep bitter . Well recommended , but very popular so best to reserve a table . Will be back next time in Castleton .

Great old, historical hotel, in the perfect location. Our room had views over the park gardens too. Staff are friendly & hard working. Great breakfast in the mornings. Perfect for the opera house if you're visiting for a show or just exploring the peaks. Some parking available- £6 for 24 hrs, obtain ticket from hotel. We'll definitely be back, many thanks !

set on a quiet and scenic road not far from the centre of hope, you'll be met by friendly staff and i have to admit my black pudding in chicken, new potatoes, cabbage and sauce melted, throw in a decent choice of starters and desserts not to mention a good choice of alcoholic beverages and your in for a nice dining experience.
