Lovely building, elegant yet welcoming and overlooking delightful gardens. We went as a family including our two teenage granddaughters who really enjoyed the special treat. The menu is well balanced, imaginative and beautifully presented. The cost of dinner is very fairly priced and unlike most other restaurants there is no surcharge for the cheese course. The range of wines is good, the list has really informative descriptions and prices are sensible without excessive mark-ups.

Undoubtedly the absolute best dinner I have ever eaten and we (my husband and 1) eat all over the world. I honestly can’t stop talking about it totally superb thank you. We gates the night too wish is come and found the chef

Dated decor further let down by unresponsive kitchen. A large group booking was kept waiting and then after requesting a variation for a sweet for one guest, despite being a group of 10 on an overnight, was told the chef cant cook?!. Customer service?

We are staying over for three nights and what a way to start. Exceptional food that exceeded our expectations. Compliments to the chef. Every single course was great.

Everything is just perfect! The food, the wine, the port, the staff, the house, the grounds, the rooms-everything! We have been to many Michelin star restaurants and they were absolutely not even close to the standards of middlethorpe Hall restaurant! This is our 2nd visit in 2 years as we’ve been so busy with work and we thought it can’t be as good as our first visit as it was perfect then, we were definitely not disappointed this time! It was better! We knew instantly it was the same chef(s) due to the taste, quality and perfection of every dish. We shall try and eat and stay here as many times as we possibly can! 100% perfection (we are so hard to please too!!) Please do not change the chef (s) 🙏

A small group of friends celebrated my partner's 80th birthday with us at Middlethorpe Hall. We had a superb lunch in beautiful surroundings, everyone really enjoyed the food and we all had a wonderful day. Special mention to the staff who were professional, efficient and friendly. Thanks for making my partner's special celebration so memorable.

Went here with two friends on 3rd August for Prosecco Afternoon Tea. It was delicious. We had a cosy lounge to ourselves and we're well looked after by the amazing staff. Nothing was too much trouble worth a visit

Celebrated my 60th with a family Sunday lunch at Middlethorpe Hall recently - it was a brilliant experience. The superb weather meant we could enjoy pre-and post-dinner drinks in the beautiful grounds which was a bonus. The staff were all attentive and friendly, special mention to Cecil (I think) who made our lunch service sparkle. Of course, the food was gorgeous - every single person commented how much they enjoyed it. Thank-you and highly recommended!

Attended for Coronation Day celebrations with my husband and daughter. It was a whole day event culminating with a tree planting ceremony and a choir in excellent voice rounding off a very memorable day. The welcome, attention to detail, champagne reception, canapes, great wines, fantastic food, rounding off with coffee were all of the highest quality; staff were friendly and polite and nothing was too much trouble for anyone. I would rate Middlethorpe Hall, Manager Lionel Chathard and every member of staff unsurpassable - well done everyone what a fantastic place.

Lovely romantic meal for two. Previous posts have mentioned a memorable setting, which it certainly is. We went in the evening and had a mixture of a la carte and 'bar' menu. The food was all great and very enjoyable. The service was attentive and caring and really added to the experience, all the staff we encountered were both warm and courteous. Overall we had a lovely evening and would recommend a visit.

Amazing Service if I could give 6 stars I would.. My daughter and son in law had their civil marriage ceremony and we had planned to go to bettys for afternoon tea to celebrate so had booked. When we arrived they had ‘lost’ the booking and were full …so I called middlethorpe and explained our situation and they said come when you are ready no problem even though they were fully booked for afternoon tea . We received a wonderful warm welcome - the afternoon tea was fabulous and the attentive service was amazing so we were able to make this a really special occasion. What really makes middlethorpe hall special is the staff- they are friendly and very good at their jobs.. don’t waste your time and money queueing for a tourist trap tea rooms - take a 10 minute drive and you can have a fabulous experience in beautiful surroundings Thank you to all the staff for making our celebration so special

What a lovely afternoon enjoying tea and cakes on the lawn watching the wild life. Our Spanish waitress Clara was excellent.

Middlethorpe Hall is so beautiful! We arrived in the afternoon and were greeted by such friendly staff and went for a walk in the gardens and relaxed in the pool and spa. The accommodation was very comfortable and spacious with a very large and ultra comfy bed. The evening meal was such a delight with both the excellence of food and the service. ( the only negative is that the menu does not do the food justice and I think could be re-written to reflect this) The wine list was extremely extensive. I highly recommend this hotel. It is also a great place to explore York as we left our car in the nearby park and ride.

£62 plus 12.5% service charge for afternoon tea for two. It comprised of 6 finger sandwiches, 2 mini scones, 2 deli sausage rolls and 8 tiny petit fours between us. I felt ripped off. Its the most overpriced afternoon tea I've ever had. Not recommended.

Ver poor meal, spoiled by very poor quality meat which we were both unable to eat, in fact made us both feel a little sick, we decided not to have a sweet because of this but still charged a meal excess - very disappointing as visited for a special occasion and left feeling the monetary takings was all that was important to the management

An excellent family meal. Great setting and ambience and first rate cooking for taster,starter,main and desert. The only drop from perfection is that post lockdown the staff are a little rusty. Needs a floor manager to sharpen things a bit. They are trying hard but lack the perfectikn that comes with experience and management.

We had an amazing meal just before Christmas. The service was excellent, the waiter warm and engaging. Every aspect of the meal was superb the canapés, all courses, home made breads, wine etc. A lovely touch was the dessert served with 'Happy Birthday' tastefully piped onto the serving plate. I would love to visit again and experience a stay over and breakfast enjoying the estate viewing the gardens in the daylight.

What better way to enliven the should and the spirit on a dull damp Monday before Christmas then enter the baroque Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, full fo glowing fireplaces, beautiful Christmas decorations and that warm, welcoming armchair warmth of a fine dining place that does excellent afternoon tea. (you can have coffee instead of one of the rather interesting list of teas on offer) You can upgrade ot add a glass of champagne. Or (I am sure it is a sensible addition to the menu) you can have a light tea. Allow two hours to set and relax and eat gently. The champagne is excellent and seems reasonably priced as an upgrade! The choice is interesting if you wish to venture beyond the breakfast and the grey. And all is well served and presented with the starched tablecloth excellence you expect. Did I forget to mention the trio of sandwiches served on home baked breads - plural. Not mean finger sandwiches, not clumsy ham fisted wedges but delightful but meaningful plans, chess and the seasonal turkey and cranberry. An excellent balance. And then the sausage rolls - they were rich but right for the season. Scones, yes. Perfect and a very tasty array of cakes. We left the mini mince pie with brandy cream and redcurrant to the last. Wise. It's intense and clearly the end-piece. Two hours (and a half!) flew past. The only criticism is the way the light faded over the small piece of parkland that was outside the window our table faced. A pity they cannot control the timing of the winter solstice to keep daylight a little longer: they had everything else under perfect control and beautifully balanced, served, presented and staged. And the staff are excellent - again that perfect balance between excellent service and being friendly and personable. Highly recommended for afternoon tea. And dinner and lunch. I love this place.

Tres pequeños bocadillos insípidos, un bollo pequeño que sabía a levadura y unas "tortas" bastante indiferentes. ¡Uno era un pequeño trozo de lo que se suponía era un pan de dátiles con una gota de algún tipo de crema encima sobre la que se esparcían palomitas de maíz! Los otros dulces fueron un macaron, un pequeño eclair y una olla de algún tipo de mousse. Muy decepcionante, comimos los sándwiches y probamos un par de dulces, pero tuvimos que dejarlos ya que no eran los pasteles que esperarías para un té de la tarde. Luego nos cobraron 29 a cada uno. 95 más 12. 5% de servicio a pesar de que nos habíamos quejado de una manera muy constructiva a la persona a cargo que dijo que pasaría nuestros comentarios al chef. Definitivamente no volveré y no lo recomendaría.

Cenamos con mis suegros y mis hijos adolescentes un martes por la noche en agosto. Fue una experiencia maravillosa tanto en el servicio como en la comida. Superó nuestras expectativas y fue disfrutado tanto por jóvenes como por mayores. Mi hija dijo que el entrante de salmón era lo más delicioso que había comido y el entrante de caballa también estaba delicioso. Delicado pero abundante. We held a business meeting and lunch on a Friday in early March in this wonderful building. It took 30 mins for coffee and tea to arrive. Going through to lunch it was noticed the restaurant had not been hovered with food on the floor around our table.The few staff on duty were friendly but no clear management visible and we left disappointed.

This National Trust property is a fine boutique hotel, spa and restaurant. The quality of the food is excellent and the setting is luxurious but not ostentatious. A beautiful base for visiting York

Decidimos regresar al hotel para tomar un té con crema por la tarde y nos encantó poder alojarnos sin reserva previa. Saludar en la puerta principal fue muy acogedor y nos llevaron a la biblioteca, que era muy acogedora. Servido por un recién llegado de Francia (¿Mateo?) Muy agradable joven muchacho. Tea Scones Cream and Jam estaban bien presentados y saborearon deliciouse. Disfrutamos mucho de nuestra visita y recuperamos nuestros abrigos, etc. con la ayuda de James en la recepción. Final perfecto para una corta visita a York, nuestra ciudad favorita.

Lovely majestic venue with a comfy seating area to sit near reception whilst waiting for all of our party to arrive. We were seated in the Drawing Room which had a lovely ambience but that was it! The table that was set with our crockery and cutlery was simply too small to fit everything on. We ended up juggling things around once the tea pots arrived. The room was absolutely freezing too (and we’re ladies of a certain age that don’t usually feel the cold!). When we asked if we could move somewhere warmer we were told this was the warmest room and that once the fire got going (which ironically turned out to be gas and not log!) we’d be too hot within half an hour. We waited 4 hours and it didn’t happen! The food was lovely with the usual sandwiches but more quantity and variety of cake than I think I’ve ever seen at an afternoon tea! Top up cuppa’s were offered which is great as it isn’t always available as part of afternoon tea. Doggy bags were available too. The service was ok.

El plato de vieira fue uno de los mejores entrantes que he comido. El comedor es muy elegante, con paneles de roble y una chimenea en el hogar. El servicio fue excelente y hay una extensa lista de vinos. También recomendaría el aperitivo Punt e Mes, que nunca he visto en ningún otro lugar. Una estancia maravillosa, hecha aún más especial por el encantador personal.

Gran restaurante, vistas increíbles, servicio increíble con comida hermosa! ! Mejoraría la capacitación del personal ya que un camarero nos compró canapés de carne cuando le dijimos nuestras necesidades dietéticas a la llegada, también era carne de cerdo que REALMENTE no debería haber sucedido, rechazamos cortésmente y pedimos un reemplazo, esta vez no hubo daño, pero Esto es grave y necesita mejorar. Could not fault this amazing food, I would go as far as saying Michelin standard. The menu had something for everyone to enjoy. I had the scallops and they were HUGE but beautifully cooked and well seasoned

We had the most wonderful time at our friends 80th birthday lunch. Everything was perfect from the staff, food and surroundings. An excellent experience.

My husband and I have been to eat at Middlethorpe Hall quite a few times and thought we'd go for one of their Al Fresco lunches. When we booked we were advised - as it was race day in York - to book for 1:30 to avoid the race day lunchers which we did.

If you are ever looking for a special occasion meal in York and can spare some expense, Middleborough Hall has got to be up there as a top choice. The service throughout was excellent, friendly without being too familiar, and every course that we had was beautiful. Starting with onion and parmesan bread to go with the smoked haddock veloute and quails egg, followed by the pork and chorizo with butternut squash for main, ending with the banana cake with caramel mousse and ice cream. Rarely do you get such a consistently good meal where every course impresses, but this was one of them. Of course it is expensive, but definitely worth it as a treat and I know we will be back again.

A little expensive but for the quality of food and the attention to detail by the staff, I enjoyed the dining experience there immensely.

Having visited before and been impressed for afternoon tea we decided to call in again. Once seated in the elegant drawing room the waiter asked what drinks we required, we ordered Assam tea and a coffee, when these came they were the Assam and English breakfast tea, not a good start. The sandwiches were rather tasteless and bland but the desserts were good enough.

Great food, fantastic service in a wonderful setting, it was great to have a meal served by professional staff who really know the job and can tell you in detail about the various options on a great menu.

There were four of us eating at the restaurant and we couldn’t fault the food. It was well presented and tasted as good as it looked. You could taste everything individually on your plate. Canopies to start before entering the dining experience. The bread rolls to die for. Four different flavours, delicious.

Take a trip back in time to a more elegant age, with staff who are as consummately professional as they are warm and attentive. We had afternoon tea, which was lovely. Do allow time to take a walk in the Hall's beautiful grounds.

Middlethorpe Hall is a beautiful place with attentive and friendly staff. The food for our afternoon tea was delicious but far too much cut cake. The scones were very good and the small cream cakes excellent. The only difficulty we had was that we were sat in either hard backed chairs or low settees around a low table. This seemed very strange and made it difficult to balance plates and cups/saucers. It would have been a much better experience for a very special occasion if we had either been in a dining room or had a proper round normal height table.

A pre booked and private dining experience at Middlethorpe Hall.

We ate here two nights running and thoroughly enjoyed the food in this fine dining restaurant. The chef clearly knows what they are doing! Our only gripes were non food based really - where is the background music, it really lacked atmosphere without it. Kept waiting for over 45 minutes for our table on one evening - not really acceptable. Surprised that we weren't asked about dietary requirements on booking the table, normally establishments such as this ask as a matter of course. The amuse bouche we were served had crab in it which i am allergic to, luckily it was mentioned so i didn't eat it. The food was 5/5 but due to the other points, overall i'm afraid just a 4/5 from us.

Four of us had lunch at Middlethorpe Hall a couple of weeks ago. All of us had lunched here on several previous occasions. A lovely summer's day & we had drinks on the terrace, overlooking the gardens, before moving inside to eat. We all had the set luncheon menu ( £26.50 2 courses or £33 3 courses).

Coffee for four in the lounge. Had an interesting walk around the grounds. Alfresco lunch for four which was was served and beautifully presented and coffee to finish with.

You are made to feel special from the moment one walks through the door.

This is certainly a rather formal place for dinner, but not cold or stiff and the service was excellent and friendly. To sit in this old panelled room at comfortable tables after drinks on the terrace looking over the splendid grounds was a real treat. The crab ravioli with a soft shell crab was excellent as was the duck and the wine list, although containing the classics one would expect at such an establishment, contained some reasonably priced bottles. We enjoyed our stay enormously, will come again and look forward to dinner in the restaurant.

Lunch at Middlethorpe Hall is always a treat. Old English comfort and style, attentive staff throughout and wonderful food beautifully presented.

Lovely setting, beautifully cooked and presented lunch and very good service. The lamb was excellent and the desserts interesting and delicious. The staff were all politely attentive without being intrusive. Outstanding value.

I had mallard (duck) for my main course which was beautifully cooked and enhanced by its accompaniments. My wife had a vegetarian main which she really enjoyed.

Excellent choice of menu, varying from a taster menu, al la carte, or a winter warmer choice. All food well presented on the plate and served by attentive and discreet staff. Good size portions too Not cheap but then excellence never was.

I must first show my hand, I have been here for five very different occasions, all of which were wonderful in their own right. But those five experiences were all echoed in a meal last night.

Went to Middlethorpe Hall restaurant for a birthday Dinner – the celebrant was in his twenties and the ambiance and beautiful setting in a National Trust property didn’t really fit the occasion for a youngster. The manicured gardens, including a Cedar of Lebanon on the main lawn, and the grand, chintzy interiors were perhaps a little too formal. The Bloody Mary drinks with far too much hot Tabasco pepper sauce weren’t the best of starts before we moved through to the dining room with ornate panelling. We bypassed the six-course tasting menu with wine pairings, tempting as it was, and went straight to the la carte menu with local ingredients (Yorkshire Dales lamb, and Whitby fish, with vegetables straight from the garden. The wine list is well chosen and decently priced. For dessert we had blood orange soufflé with orange Madeleine and chocolate orange ice cream; excellent but expensive, as might be expected. This is fine dining and we may return on a more solemn occasion.

High quality food and impeccable service. Lots of locallly grown, fresh produce. Beautiful dining room with lots of historical character.

Dinner is fine dining. The food content is first class but presentation is slightly OTT. Style triumphs over traditional content....

Somos 39 mujeres que gustan de comer desde el Club conservador, Pontefract. Habíamos disfrutado de una mañana de compras navideñas en Nueva York en lo que fue un tiempo bastante miserable en cuanto a la mañana. El momento en el que entramos por la puerta de Middlethope Hotel, nos encontramos con un saludo cálido y amable de todo el personal. El hall está muy bien cuidado y la sala fue adornada con decoraciones de navidad, creando un ambiente festivo era encantador. Comimos en el comedor por las escaleras, que de nuevo estaba hermosamente decorado y sirve el almuerzo más sabrosos por personal amable que no podía hacer lo suficiente para nosotros para hacer nuestra tarde tan agradable. Esta es la segunda vez que hemos estado en el hall en Navidad y estoy seguro que volveremos el próximo año. 39 mujeres dejaron la sala que la hora del té, muy contentos y satisfechos, así que gracias por hacer una Middlethorpe comienzo perfecto para Navidad.

My husband booked well in advance for a birthday treat . On our arrival we were welcomed and shown into where we were having our afternoon tea . The table was set and every thing was running very smooth . Our tea order was taken and brought promptly

We are regular visitors to Middlethorpe and we are never let down from the moment you arrive to time you leave and if I was a Michelin inspector it would have a star too the food is simply cutting edge top end dining that’s for lunch looking forward to returning

This is the fourth time we have stayed here and the food was even better than other times: even then it was very good. The flavours and balance were stunning. Not one even poor course in two evenings. Sensational.

The setting alone is incredibly special. Beautiful rooms, gardens and staff who materialise always at the exact right moment. From pre-dinner cocktails in the exquisite drawing room to the actual dining experience, everything was truly exceptional from taste to presentation. The menu changes with the season and every dish we had was truly incredible.... Pheasant ravioli with foie gras will be remembered forever. The staff are discrete yet human and we enjoyed their humour and professionalism. For my husband and I, this was a trip down memory lane as we were married here 30 years’ ago. It has only got better.

This establishment never disappoints. The setting is superb and the staff are oh so professional. Pre Luncheon drinks area nice entree In a sitting room looking onto the terrace. Drinks on the terrace in clement weather is highly recommended looking into a lovely garden and well kept lawn. The menu is small and perfectly formed - the smoked salmon cannelloni is good and both the chicken and lamb dishes are well presented and flavoursome. The cheese selection is varied and acceptable. The wine menu is extensive with choices for every budget- consumed both red and white over the years -very decent offerings so spoilt for choice on that front. It's a superb Luncheon spot - not to be missed. The panneled setting is formal but I see that as a great plus.

Celebratory lunch for 4 bus passes booked on the autumn offer of 3 courses for price of 2. Set menu lunch with three or four choices each course. Each course already plated. Food well presented and tasty ,portion size not huge and all three courses will be required for most people.Dining room had a genteel hush which we managed to liven but with a certain degree of guilt!Wine list exceptionally thick with prices to match. Not offered choice assistance which would have been helpful.Staff friendly and generally helpful.Would certainly return when maximum enjoyment can be gained from lingering in the panelled country house surroundings

We had the tasting menu at Middlethorpe Hall on 10th October 2017.It was absolutely superb with great service; would definitely recommend it.

The restaurant offer excellent food with a good ambience and an extensive wine list, but not the cheapest food you will find

I'm vegetarian and over the years have not enjoyed dining here as the vegetarian food had been very unimaginative and frankly not worth the money. Having managed to avoid the place for a few years I was very pleasantly surprised when we had a family birthday lunch here. The kitchen had really upped their game and I enjoyed an imaginative & delicious vegetarian meal and my fellow diners thoroughly enjoyed their meat & fish based meals which also seemed to have improved since we had last eaten there.We had taken advantage of the '3 courses for the price of 2' weekday lunch deal and it was incredibly good value and I will happily go back in the future.The only downsides are that the dining room is quite dark & gloomy so not a place you want to be exactly on a sunny day and the post meal coffee is overpriced.

Arriving in time for pre-lunch drinks in the main drawing room overlooking the manicured lawned gardens, we relaxed and perused the menus and wine list. Maxance greeted us and attended to our every need, champagne beautifully served at perfect temperature, a bowl of olives, nuts and Japanese rice crackers. Time flew by, we ordered, we were ushered through to our table in the most elegant oak panelled dining room. Pea velouté for one, and two of us enjoyed the 42 degrees salmon, A most interesting Lebanese red wine accompanied our lamb and pork main courses. We tucked in a cheese course before our strawberry tarts and chocolate pudding accompanied by a delicious Hungarian 5 putonyos Tokai.Coffees all around and we then wondered where the last 3 hours + disappeared to. A perfect end to the week and start to the weekend! Made to feel so welcome, thank you Maxance! Can't wait to return soon.

Also look for early dining discounts online. We had the tasting menu (45 three courses, 37 two courses) with a discount for booking ahead. All items were good, tastefully arranged and accompanied. Service excellent.Chicken and salmon appetizers. Ribs and sea bream. Chocolate/vanilla/pistachio ice creams and a strawberry tart.

My wife and I had dinner here on two evenings ,lamb and steak first night and roast pork on the second evening , meal and service was excellent . The oak paneled and candlelit dining room added to it.

An early start on a wet dismal morning, immediately made better with great coffee followed by a tasty breakfast. Service was good too! Only down side was the walk in the rain from the car park, but it is as it is.

The Sunday lunch provided for us was delicious and the service was exceptional, it made it a very special occasion for us.

We chose to have our wedding at Middlethorpe in June and I would like to thank all the team for making it such a perfect day. From initially seeing Middlthorpe Hall we knew we wanted to get married there, both the grounds and house are beautiful with impeccable upkeep. After meeting Julia, the Wedding Coordinator, we knew our wedding day was in safe hands with her and the Middlethorpe Team. She ensured our day ran smoothly and had thought of details for the wedding that even we had not. Our day would not have been as wonderful as it was without her help and input. She was professional, always available and quick to respond. We arrived at Middlethorpe Hall the night before the wedding, all the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. From arrival we were made to feel very special and all our needs (and more) were catered for. All the rooms were pretty and spotless, we stayed in the Duke of York Suite and it is without a doubt the most outstanding room I have ever stayed in. I used the Spa facilities and had my nails done, the lady who did my nails was lovely and did a wonderful job. The Spa facilities are well kept. Whenever we needed anything, every member of staff was willing to go the extra mile for us. The staff seemed very excited about the wedding and they really made our day feel even more special. The day was completely stress free thanks to the team at Middlehthorpe. I cannot thank the Chef enough for the best meal we have ever had, the quality of the food was outstanding! Every course not only tasted delicious but was presented impeccably and the timing of bringing out the food was perfect. All the table staff who served us were helpful, friendly and very attentive whilst being subtle and not over bearing. We would like to thank them!I would highly recommend Middlethorpe not only for weddings but also to stay in the hotel, to eat or use the Spa. The combination of the gorgeous building and grounds , excellent location near York and by far the best customer service I have ever received mean it is one of the best hotels in the country! I felt that it was excellent value for money and if in doubt about booking just look at everyone else's amazing reviews!

This visit was a birthday treat from my friend and what a treat it was. Champagne starter, finger sandwiches, scone, jam and clotted cream-all followed by numerous cakes and a trifle. China rose tea was plentiful as was the iced water.Service was excellent and all our needs met. We sat outside initially but the heat got to us so we retired to the comfy chairs in the foyer for a further three hours of chatting.Finished the day by walking around the beautiful gardens and around the lake. Never once felt rushed, even though we loitered in the lovely surrounding for hours.Thank you to all the staff

We came here for a retirement afternoon tea party. The staff were very attentive and accommodating. The food was lovely with a wide selection of sandwiches, macarons, mini cakes and patisseries. Our favourite was a raspberry one with popping candy! The gardens looked splendid and the room the party was held in was a beautiful setting.

Fine dining with a differenceMiddlethorpe Hall is a restaurant that is operated by the National Trust. Diners are able to stroll around the attractive grounds and admire the classical lines of the Hall and it is well worth arriving early in order to take advantage of this opportunity, particularly when the weather is fine.The restaurant operates a timed admission policy (quarter of an hour slots) which seems to ensure that each course is freshly prepared and served. On arrival, we were invited to relax in the sumptuously furnished drawing room, where we were able to make our selections from the extensive choices on offer.We opted for the à la carte menu and enjoyed an excellent meal that combined intense flavours and unusual ingredients. Dinner is served at candle-lit tables in a panelled dining room with pleasant views over the beautiful grounds. The service provided by two young French waiters was efficient and courteous.Eating at Middlethorpe Hall is not cheap: definitely not a budget option! However, we decided to push the boat out for a family 60th birthday celebration and felt that, for a special occasion like this, it really did represent good value for money, as well as providing a very memorable experience.Middlethorpe Hall is a hotel and spa, not just a restaurant. Situated very close to York racecourse and adjacent to the A64, it is very easy to get to with a car though the traffic noise from the latter is quite noticeable when viewing the lovely gardens.I honestly don’t think we could have found a more suitable restaurant for this special occasion, particularly on a Sunday evening, when many other possible venues in the York area were closed.We combined our celebratory meal with a visit to nearby Benningborough Hall, another National Trust property that also has beautiful grounds and hosts an impressive collection of paintings from the National Portrait Gallery.

Patronised this restaurant over many years and never disappoints. The staff are first class - attentive and highly professional. The dining room is small and perfectly formed with a lovely fire for the winter months. The menus change regularly and are seasonal making good use of local,sustainable produce. The red mullet is excellent - highly recommended. Cod and chicken main courses are superb- excellent accompaniments and all well seasoned. Rhubarb and custard- naturally with a stylish twist is very nice amd the cheese course is varied with high quality crackers. Coffee and fudge a must ! Would I return- in a heartbeat.

This was a first visit and the whole experience was marvelous. The dining room is beautiful, with a wonderful view out to the manicured lawn.From the moment of arrival the staff were fantastic - very polite and attentive, and wholly focused on making this a great experience. The food was well presented, nicely prepared, and very tasty. The waiter ensured that water glasses were refilled regularly. It's a long time since I was at a restaurant where the cloth was meticulously cleared of the minutest crumb between courses. Whilst attentive, you certainly did not feel rushed in any way.All in all, a wonderful experience.

I visited this place in the early 70's when it was a posh disco. Since then a chap bought it, did it up and handed it over to English Heritage. I went with my wife and friends for a 3 course lunch. The hall itself looks great on arrival, an old style country house. The door was opened for us by a member of staff and we were directed in. Coats were taken and we were asked if we had booked lunch. We were then directed into the lounge bar where we were seated drink orders taken and then came the nuts and olives whilst we looked through the menus. The place itself is just how we like it and old fashioned look and a feel which is really comfortable and homely and staff that go overboard to assist. It wasnt too long before we were directed to the dining room and then served with a first course that to my mind all looked first rate and tasted great. The main course came and again the taste was really good. However don't expect a plate full, this is ala carte and cook, looks and taste is what its about. After a decent time the main course came along which was just as good as the rest. We had a bottle of white wine which was light and just the ticket. Then the staff managed to find us a place away from the restaurant to have coffee even though there was a retirement do on (the head gardener David, retiring after 35yrs.) which I thought was a really nice touch especially as we saw the retireing person had been given a painting of the hall.Then we wandered out to look at the grounds which this time of year and in the sunshine looked great. I thought it would be excellent for wedding photo's. All in all a wonderful 3 or 4 hours.

We have eaten here many times and never been disappointed, always had super service and ever so tasty and beautifully prepared food. Middlethorpe Hall deserve another review.The service is usually provided by British and French staff, who are well trained and courteous, making you fell special. The food is always amazing, it looks so appetising on the plate, unusual flavours together and leaves a memory on your taste buds.
