Fantastic food. Best lamb I have EVER tasted….cooked to perfection with a wonderful gravy/jus! I dream of this dish. Had to have 3 courses just…..because :) Ambiance great and attentive staff. This is my second visit and I just wished I lived closer as this would be my weekly go-to place. Worth every penny.

This place is a fantastic place to celebrate a big anniversary - Golden Wedding. We were welcomed by friendly staff - very attentive and highly organised. They had prepared a long table for us all in the brasserie area. It was a perfect location with great views out over the garden and countryside. They catered for 17 of us with ease and the service was seamless. The other guests who eat at the Middle House didn’t seem to mind a bigger party going on which was a relief and the atmosphere was really relaxed. The food on the menu is so varied and everything was cooked to perfection. Thai chicken curry was gorgeous, steaks were delicious. Every guest was so happy with their choices. Loved the trio of summer puddings as a dessert. It was genuinely a fantastic night and we will be back to sample more yummy dishes. Many thanks to all.

Like anything it depends what you are looking for! If you are looking for a historic British pub with good local food then keep driving if you are looking for a wide range of food plied high (but not cheap) served in a cheap motorway service station extension on the back of a historic inn then this is for you. Lots of large parties enjoying the pile it high style of food serving, menu has something for everyone from a roast to nachos. If you are after fine food or gastro pub with local sourcing then this isn’t your restaurant. I grew up in this village and have come back to visit, definitely not the authentic thriving centre of the village pub it used to be. I got the feeling that most people were people driving for an evening out from Eastbourne or Crowborough. The original building is beautiful, unfortunately the ugliest of ugly extensions has been added to the back recently to give a school cafeteria style serving area (with amazing views). How it got past planning is a mystery to me! The purple lit feature wall goes well with the 16C carvings in the main building… Shame as this could be an amazing authentic British pub with fabulous British food, I appreciate that that is not what the owner is going for. If you like a Harvester Inn you’ll like this pub.

This charming Grade 1 listed 16th Century pub has for some time been on my radar to visit so when mum offered to take us for breakfast on a sunny Saturday morning, it was the perfect chance to check it out. As it was a glorious day, everyone had chosen to eat outside, under a shaded extension to the original building. This part is officially the function suite that offers a range of events such as afternoon tea, private parties, and the breakfasts that had attracted us in the first place. A modern and stylish addition, this area opens out onto the garden and overlooks the surrounding countryside. The main (and oldest) part of the Middle House reflects its history and is full of character with dark wood beams and inviting areas to lounge with a drink or two, or tables for formal eating. The breakfast options are few but varied, from a full English with choice of eggs to (my choice of) a vegan breakfast with avocado on sourdough toast, tomato, beans, hash browns, and one of the tastiest mushrooms I've had in a long while. The coffee was a good balance of bitter and rich notes and free water was also provided for the table. The food was very tasty and the service was excellent, with efficient and friendly staff that were attentive without being overbearing. Cost-wise, it's just under £20 a head on average (for a breakfast with coffee) but the price is appropriate for the great standard of taste, location, and service. Will definitely be coming back to sample their dinner options although we may need to book in advance as their popularity means that it's not always possible to drop in on the off-chance, especially at the weekend. In all, a great experience and it set us up perfectly for the day ahead. Even if you just nip in for a drink and to soak up the atmosphere, I would definitely recommend you give it a go.

We have been several times and we have always had wonderful service and great food. We planned a birthday surprise and all the staff were extremely attentive, and helpful with keeping the secret and helping with table and cake. We do wish to thank the staff in particular the young man who looked after us l all day from drinks on the patio after lunch up to nearly midnight accommodating our party. I’m so sorry I forget his name but also all the staff went out of their way for us so again we will be back soon. Thanks to all .

This was the second viist here as we were really impressed the last time. I booked early na drequeste dspecic seating. So when we turned up with our friends and given different table , I was not impressd. The booking had been made over amonth ago! The excus ewas htat a larger tabel had been set up in th espace we had booked YET the space we were in could equally been made up fo the same! The tbale in contention was also empty for a considerable time so the exchange could have been made. The downsid eoof our new position menat two of us ha dto sit on a bench seat and face the large windows so with a light bright background it was difficut to look across and converse with our friends comfortably. The requested position was side on so no harsh light to glare. plus I detest bench seats cushioned or otherwise. It was a busy Sunday so we expected a slower service. It was particulary slow-over 25 minutes befre we got our desserts -moslty ice creams!! The food was still as good but they need to assess the situation wbete with higher numbers plus follow the customer's request. We will not be rushing back sadly as there are so many good pub/restaurants now where you can get the full service.

Middle House has a lovely atmosphere. Classic English pub renovated with a large restaurant. Service was efficient and warm. The food was very good. All4 of us enjoyed our meals. The roasted salmon was my pick and it was cooked well and was very tasty. My wife enjoyed the chicken liver pâté starter followed by the roast pork with a generous serving of crackling (when requested). Our friends enjoyed their chicken Marsala curry and pork loin. The sorbets and ice cream were a nice way to end the meal. We ordered a bottle of the ‘house’ Malbec and it was very enjoyable for a house wine. Overall, we were very pleased.

Have had just coffee, breakfast and a dinner here. Fine and friendly service, food hot and tasty, the setting and ambience excellent. I would not say that one can find "haute cuisine" here, but more like trusty quality 'pub' food. Tables in garden, on terrace and inside well spaced, so a very pleasant time can be had. Only negative ripple is that we had to wait overlong from wanting to pay the bill to the card machine finally arriving.

I came here for dinner with a friend... Ordered the venison spring roll starter, absolutely gorgeous! Then had the duck as a main which was described as ‘Vietnamese duck with cashews, soy sauce and side vegetable selection’ thinking it would be stir fried veg or something slightly Asian! Plate arrives and the duck looks lovely, to be followed by a side of Sunday vegetables which included dauphinois potato, roasties, broccoli and carrots?! It was Tuesday so I felt like it was used because it was left over? I simply could not understand how the chef thought that creamy/cheesy potatoes and roast potatoes married with Asian duck? If you don’t know the cuisine, don’t offer/cook it. So when the lady cleared the table I asked what the Sunday veg was about.. and she replied ‘it’s just to complete the meal, they do that with a lot of dishes here’ Which then felt like a very half hearted attempt at a potentially lovely dish.

Visit about once a year and have still to be sated . I find it expensive for what you receive . You come out hungry . The propensity of antipodean staff still exists . Was served at the bar every time by a polite young chap from Adelaide . ( Sorry I forgot your name , had drank and spent a lot ! ) Possibly lost in translation , but no tomato ( it can kill ) no lettuce, no sauce , means NO .So when burger arrived YES all over it . Did not make a scene as very VIP clients with us . Removed such offending items thereby leaving the wet soggy ,cold bun behind and tainting the rest . Please get order correct and use paper not the Gameboy electrickery thingy . Will possibly give yet another chance to get perfect mark . Always book ahead too .

Having never been here before, I actually booked it as a birthday treat for my friend via Groupon as it's local. We were very impressed ...from the nicely set out table with a choice of teas with tea menu awaiting you to the fabulous view across the valley. Lovely choice of sandwiches, warm homemade scones and finishing with a choice of gorgeous cakes ...no problem to have a doggy bag when we couldn't manage them all!! They were very helpful when booking asking if there were any dietary requests and actually following through with them. Would definitely return here for tea again or another meal as the restaurant and pub are looked very inviting with log fires everywhere. Only slight niggle was no obvious signage when you enter the hotel as to where to go ....had to go through to the bar to ask but didn't detract for a lovely experience.

Been here three times in the last couple of months once in the restaurant in the evening. Very good menu and friendly efficient staff so 5* Then again with some Malaysian business colleagues who loved the food and atmosphere so a great lunch, again 5* Finally went for an evening pint which of course was great only small issue was the inability to serve a couple of portions of cheesy chips to go with the beer. Was told that chips could only be ordered as a side to main meal and the didn't do them as a separate order. Have to say this was a little disappointing as there were customers eating so the friers were on.

Because my cottage is small, when I have guests here, we go have lunch at the Middle house. Fist of all, you must reserve your table a week in advance (or so) if you would like to eat in the restaurant area. But if you just pop in and there is no free table, you could eat at the Bar area if there is a free table.Once you have your table and seated, I always order a pint of cider to get things started. For my food, I order the Liver with Mash. So yummy, despite the (big) size of the meal, I managed to eat it all.

We went to the Middle house restaurant in Mayfield to celebrate a significant birthday. We had a friendly greeting and the table was ready for us. Between us we had different items from the menu. The food was good and the evening went well. As we came out we felt somewhat too full of food. We agreed the portions were about a third too large and we were sad to leave such good food but we could not manage it. There nothing wrong with the quality of the food but there was too much on the plates especially the starters. This is not peculiar to this restaurant and this constructive observation. Will it stop us from going back? No.

The place is so Quaint and the food is delicious. I just wish servers would listen to what the customers say I had water with lime in it and I already had it mixed in the line was squeeze to perfection and the server came back by and I and he asked me if I wanted more water and I said yes, for halfway to the top of this ice.Keep gave me a full glass of water, or nearly. It would not be a big deal, but the fact is, I explicitly asked for him to fill it halfway again. These servers, these days, they're just giving you what they want to have, they're not understanding in our paying attention, but they want to get a great tip fortunate for them. We tip well my boyfriend and I. But I am really getting aggravated with this. So overall, the meal was fine. It's just at these people do not listen.

Really disappointed. Arrived at 4ish on a Tuesday in half term with our 15 and 11 year old to a completely empty pub, just one patron sat at the bar. Really lovely cosy large area next to the fire that was empty but immediately told by bar staff we couldn't sit there with children due to licensing rules! We were allowed to sit in the drafty back lobby by the gents loos - not so great. Weird atmosphere, we clearly weren't welcome, shame as we'd planned a few rounds and dinner but we headed back to our local accommodation instead. Looked like a really quaint pub just wish we'd realised it wasn't somewhere for families.
