Good size outdoors spaces. Service varies ie we had someone friendly then someone else was unfriendly. Well presented drinks and fair price point.

We had Sunday lunch here for Father’s Day, as always the food was great and the staff were fantastic, very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We would definitely recommend a trip out here.

Great local pub with friendly staff , had a few drinks an sat outside in the nice garden which has shelter if it's raining or shade if its sunny.

Booked 9 friends and family to have Sunday lunch and could not have wished for better food or service. ‘Best roast potatoes in years’ was just one of the many comments. Generous portions and all piping hot. The waiting staff went above and beyond to make us happy and comfortable. We will definitely be back 5*+

Very disappointed. Nothing wrong with the standard menu but one of our party had to leave as there were no gluten-free meals available. It is a serious problem for her and she could not risk choosing something that was not guaranteed gluten free.

Lovely warm atmosphere on a cold day. The food was delicious. We had lasagne which I would highly recommend.

Took advantage of cheaper prices in January, to have lunch out. Chose Fish and Chips and received superb meal - good quality and taste and thick hand cooked chips. Well impressed. Easy meal to get wrong, but superb when right, as this was!

Me and a friend had an excellent meal here last night. The food was delicious, all pre-ordered from their festive menu. Our table was waiting for us, a lovely spot by the fire, complete with place settings and crackers. The food came out quickly and service was excellent, very attentive with table checks. Such a lovely pub and great to see it busy on a Monday! Great atmosphere.

So disappointed with this Inn which fell well short of what we would expect for an evening meal. The food all tasted bland, there was no depth of flavour to anything we ate. The sauces were weak and watery, the food did not match the description on the menu. Very basic food when so much more was promised; all very uninspiring.

Absolutely amazing Roast dinner Sunday. There were 9 of us but all the food came out together, pipping hot and so delicious. The staff were wonderful and a credit to the pub managers. Extremely good value, the food quality was excellent. Will definitely return again

A beautiful pub with the most helpful staff . My family and i came for a sunday roast in september and despite how busy the pub was the service was still excellent ; the staff went above and beyond to make sure our experience was perfect . The food came out perfect , would definitely recommend!

We popped into the Royal George in Thornbury for a Sunday roast and we were extremely pleased with the whole experience. We were greeted and felt welcome as soon as we arrived, we had great seating in a bay window, the girls behind the bar were attentive , polite and enthusiastic. The food was fantastic and the portions were more than enough no matter how hungry you were. I would highly recommend this place for a Sunday roast.

I don’t normally write reviews on pub lunches but I feel that I really should today. Myself and a family member had lunch at the George today and I must say it was one of the best lunches I have had for quite a long time. The main course (Scampi) was cooked to perfection and the Eton Mess that we had as a desert was absolutely delicious. The service was also excellent so Thank You Royal George.

Amy was our server on the night we ate here. She was very welcoming with a warm smile. The food was delicious. I had the tomato soup. My husband had sausage and mash. Any even recommended using spicy mustard with his dinner. The mustard was a perfect suggestion especially since we Americans don’t know how to properly eat sausage and mash! Go…you won’t be disappointed.

Another fantastic lunch at the Royal George. Today was my birthday and hubby suggested lunch here. I had the ribeye steak which is served with either fries or chunky chips, I opted for fries, onion rings, grilled tomatoes. Hubby opted for half a duck, served with red wine gravy, bubble & squeak and salad. I swapped my fries for his bubble and squeak. My steak was so tender and very tasty. Hubby said his duck was the best he has ever tasted and voted his meal as the best this year! Well done Royal George yet again you have exceeded your meals. By the way we were both very full and could not manage a dessert. The young lady who served us, Imogen, was so sweet and very helpful. Keep up the excellent food please, we will be back.

Having just moved to the area, we were keen to find a good ‘local’! 10 minutes walk and we were enjoying a great pint and lovely food at The George!! Very friendly staff, excellent service - can’t ask for more! We’ll be back!

Spur of the moment trip out in the car and we found ourselves over the bridge in Thornbury, suddenly hungry we saw The Royal George and after checking they did a Sunday roast and that they had room we decided to give it a try..........good call !! Warm welcome, and one of the best roast dinners we’ve had in a very long time. The beef was melt in the mouth delicious, the portion ample but being big eaters we ordered extra roast potatoes, it came with greens, roast carrots, cauliflower cheese and two large yorkshire puds, very generous with the meat too. Will definitely be calling here again.

As soon as we walked in we got a very welcoming smile, we were shown the one way system around the pub, shown to our table and given menus which were one use only which I thought was great in this time, our drinks and food were brought to our table at perfect timing and the food was beautiful. They have definitely done their homework and it was no wonder the pub was busy, thank you for a very enjoyable time

we visited here during the back end of the covid problem, one way systems for walking around the pub were there but it was not a problem, the guy who greeted us was very friendly and polite and talked us through everything, our meals came quickly and all 4 were enjoyed, we would go back if we are ever to be in the area again

Recently had a business lunch here. Friendly welcome and good service. Reasonable selection of typical pub food. Had scampi and chips, which was perfectly ok. Good selection of beers

Decent pub food and good selection of g&t’s. Was a little too loud for a business meeting but will return with friends.

Specifically visited Thornberry to dine in the George mainly because the website looked amazing and these reviews were good. In reality yes the food was good, not amazing but your typical pub food. However service was a let down, the tables were wobbly (yes it's a 'rustic pub but we could have been on a ship) and we were asked to leave our tables by regulars (they had booked a table, which was reserved upstairs however they had a disabled guest in their party). Would I visit again? Not specifically but if I were passing maybe. Sometimes dining at independents doesn't always pay off.

We booked one of the function rooms at the George for a get together of about 10 friends, most of whom were eating and had pre-ordered food. The room was set up nicely for our group. We bought drinks at the bar downstairs, but staff were attentive and ready to bring food when we were ready. A number of different, tasty menu choices within our group, but highlights were an excellent burger, and the Mexican crosshatch fries were delicious (and very filling)! Again, staff were great in clearing the table after food, offering coffee and desserts (sticky toffee pudding was great).There was an end-of-month 80s theme night in the main bar downstairs so it was busy and music playing, but there was a great atmosphere. Service at the bar for drinks was fast and the bar staff friendly. Also, a drinks offer meant the drinks (wine, g&t and lager) were very reasonably priced!All in all a most enjoyable evening. Would highly recommend!

Lovely pub - sat outside in the pretty beer garden. Staff were very nice and helpful. Food let it down slightly - we had a fish bap and a Caesar salad. They filled a hole but maybe would just go here for drinks.

We stopped in for a bite in March when staying in Thornbury on the recommendation of the staff at our hotel. It's a small place, but cozy and friendly on a (then) cold and wet evening. The food and drink were good, and the atmosphere was warm. Parking is available behind the building.

I would just like to tell everyone what a wonderful manager Szymon is and that The Royal George is the BEST PLACE IN BRISTOL and to thank him for everything he did for us on are visited on Tuesday 28th may. Sadly I have not been able to come to The Royal George since just before Christmas due to being quite ill for the past five months. What with not being able or even really wanting to eat I didn’t want much, well me and my son got there and the menu had changed which was no problem but bless this wonderful manager not only did he say he would do my sons favourite steak which wasn’t on the lunchtime menu. Which made my son’s day , I had the chicken/bacon Caesar salad this was wonderful and I enjoyed every mouthful. We even went on to have two fantastic desserts all because of this amazing man, who may I add was short staffed and doing everything but not once did he forget one of his customers he cleared tables, taking food orders, running the bar and answering the telephone but not once did he stop giving 100% excellent customer service.I would just like to thank you for the most enjoyable meal I have had in the past five months and for making are visit so special , you are a true friend.So if anyone wants the best food and outstanding customer service and the nicest manager you could meet please come to The Royal George you will not be disappointed.

Stumbled on The George after initially walking through The Swan and finding it rather tatty and geriatric age orientated. The weather was good and we sat out in the open area adjacent to the gin barn. A really great selection of ales and gins which went down nicely. Ordered the snack menu, and then more from the main menu and was happily satisfied.The staff were attentive and polite.It was a great find and a good afternoon lunch.

The pub itself is nice enough and the staff are friendly but we’ve had a few bad experiences with the food here recently. We’ve visited on a weekday for lunch and had a few different sandwiches and soups and the meat in the sandwiches was gristly and really poor quality. The soup was not homemade and tasted exactly like a well known brand.We also came on a Sunday in the last few weeks and had a really bad experience. It wasn’t that busy but the food took ages to come and whilst we were waiting we saw a member of staff come running in from Aldi with some ingredients that they’d run out of in the kitchen. I appreciate they they were trying to honour orders that people had made but it somewhat ruins the illusion when you’ve paid around £10 for a meal and it’s made of cheap ingredients from the local supermarket! The bean bake in particular was a low point- it was basically a bowl of microwaved beans in a bbq sauce with no topping. The staff listened to our views and kindly gave us some money back but I don’t think we’ll be eating here again after a few disappointing visits

This is easily the best pub in Thornbury, decent selection of drinks, nice atmosphere and decoration. The food and staff are always top notch, and I can highly recommend this for a lunchtime trip if you are in the area and need to relax!

We held a birthday party recently in The Gin Barn at The Royal George on a Saturday evening. Great intimate venue of which we had exclusive use and the Hay Loft above. We had seventy guests which was about right to fill the space and not be too crammed. We made all the arrangements through Dan who was excellent with advice on catering and our other options, he was always contactable even when he wasn't supposed to be working. On the night Dan was there to make sure everything ran soomthly which it did. The food was excellent and we were looked after by Olivia behind the bar who was also brilliant. If you are looking for a party venue in Thornbury I would recommend going to have a look at The Royal George and meeting Dan and the team.

Really great experience. I really like the way everything was set out and the food was very much on point. We were expecting standard "pub grub" but it was much better in my opinion! All the staff were very friendly and there was the cutest doggo there too. Great job!

Lovely cosy pub. Lovely gin barn and garden great in summer catching the sun all day into early evening. A great asset to Thornbury. Meeting/group event room to book for free. Bar staff polite and accommodating. Dan a great manager.

Popped in for a drink and quick bit of lunch as we live nearby and always love the cosy atmosphere. We both had the burger which was delicious - very juicy and flavoursome. The staff are always so friendly whenever we visit and today was no exception. The whole experience was made even better as we were able to take advantage of their 33% off promotion that is running at the moment. Definitely recommend a visit!

Had a lovely meal with friends who were visiting. Amazing food and we were easily accommodated for with high chairs and kids menus for 2 children and a baby. Fantastic and friendly service. Will definitely be back again.

We had a wonderful time for our Christmas Day Lunch at The Royal George.

We returned to the Gin Bar with some friends but we were somewhat disappointed by the standard of customer service in terms of attitude, service with a smile - not! and speed of service and it was not even busy. This experience was a complete reversal from our experience in the summer and could have been easily rectified with customer service training. If this training was given it was seriously lacking on the night.

Had a great meal, very good service. Dan serenaded us and we all loved it; well done Dan! Definitely a great place for a work do 😀 great fun had by all!!

4 of us ate here, all for the first time. Nice oldfashioned feel, little passages and differing levels. Might be a problem for some disabled but doesnt apply to us.

Today me and my son who is 20 years old and a great critic when it comes to steak came to The Royal George, just before 3pm and asked if they were still doing food!

We always come here after getting our hair cuts opposite. Lovely light oak flooring cool tan leather and tartan seats mellow music inviting bar area and Cosmo gin bar to the rear looking out onto a nicely furnished courtyard. Even the loos are nicely done and good to see a trendy wooden ramp for those less mobile customers.

Have not been since it was the Meze at the Royal George . Limited menu compared to before . I ordered the sausage and mash , mash was very nice ,once I found it under the two sausages ! The sausages were cheap and nasty ,tried a b it of both and left them on the plate very chewy with gristle . When I told the waitress when she enquired if the meal was ok she said " I will mention it to the chef " and that was that ! ! Will not be returning .

The word play on the menu is entertaining to say the least!! I opted for the veggie burger and my was I blown away by the sheer density of it. Utter amazing I will be returning to try the gin bar!!

It says quite a lot about the place when you have to ask staff to interpret the menu (which is in English). Almost nothing is straightforward. For example we thought a sharing dish for a starter was sensible but first you have to get your head around "A crate of dimples" or some such absurdity. This is actually a small box with four half pint beer mugs each containing scampi, whitebait, totally inedible chicken wings or whatever. I really don't know how the 'chef' had the nerve to send out chicken wings that had, I suggest, a) been around for a few days; and b) 'sterilised' in a microwave until they were literally inedible. Fish & chips was satisfactory, but I regularly have much better in my local Wetherspoon's. The ice cream sundae was quite surprisingly nasty. You are warned that it has 0.9% alcohol content. I think they have the decimal point misplaced and it should be 0.09% as it was not evident. £5 is a lot of money for cheap ice cream topped with pressurised cream. I'm glad I wasn't paying the bill, but after a glance at their website I would never have chosen to go there.

I like calling in to this place as it has a great combination of cosy corners and open spaces. I sat outside and enjoyed a very pleasant time in the sunshine - while sipping a delicious pint of Butcombe.

The interior is warm, cozy and inviting. The bartender/waiter was friendly. Nice selection of beers. We had the evening specials and both were absolutely delicious. Short walk from Thornbury Castle where we were staying.

Told pizza oven turned off at 8.45. Refused what had been ordered and paid for. Lucky the chef doesn’t work for me. Tail wagging the dog. Complete bollocks

Went here for a pre-birthday drink with friends that we were visiting the décor is great and the service was perfect as they informed of deals on booze even though I had ordered (so didn't need to). Would of given this place 5 stars but didn't try the food so as it is supposed to be a restaurant rating but have been told by my friends they have had some good food there also !!!

We visit The Royal George each time we visit Thornbury. They serve a great menu, offer a wide range of drinks to quench every thirst and serve delicious food to satisfy most palates!

Since opening we have visited the George several times with things generally being average to good. After today’s visit I would drop my view to “poor”.

Had dinner here one night with friends. There is an extensive gin menu so I can vouch for the G & T's. However the food was just average but OK for a pub.

Visited here for the first time and really liked it! Love the way it has been decorated and the food was really nice, and so were the staff.

Personal agradable pub pour un encantador amable que bien presentado gin tonic. Hamburguesa y patatas fritas era sabroso y razonable también. Sin embargo, 2 rondas de bebidas. Pinta de Guinness y un gin tonic en ambas ocasiones state house tonic gin slimline. Primera Ronda de £10. 10. Segunda ronda 8 libras. 35! No me gusta sentir estafado, pero la señora dieron la primera ronda. Cuando le preguntaron el barman de hombros y dijo que debería haber sido preguntó en ese momento. Pero en el momento que asumí que era correcto.

Este es mi lugar favorito, la comida es excelente como es el servicio y el personal es super amable y muy acogedor! Estoy muy impresionado, volveremos muy pronto! 😀

Hemos comenzado a este pub regularmente ya que la comida es muy buena, pero nos topamos constantemente cruzando un lujo recientemente cuando fueron celebrar la sidra y salchichas festival. Había una banda tocando en el jardín. Gran noche!

Been to this pub a few times recently and enjoyed good beer, friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. The outdoor courtyard catches the afternoon sun and is the perfect place to have sundowners. They've got a great selection of Gins too, great for a summers eve.

Enjoyed the new lager called London Helles. This was recommended by the helpful staff. The food was very tasty. We had pizza , mac and cheese and chorizo. The service was very good and all the staff were friendly.

Have been here numerous times for food and drinks. Food is good pizzas handmade. But the highlight is definitely the gin bar especially on a sunny day. Great selection of gins and enthusiastic staff making great gin cocktails (even experimenting with customer requests if you ask) definately worth a trip.

Well that was something else ,,, wouldn't want to eat there again although staff were friendly , the room was too small for 36 people the staff couldn't even serve the meals properly, , felt really cramped wasn't good , and the food was terrible the Roast beef Dinner well was floating "in all you could say was Hot water that should have been Gravy .. the veg were all stewed together in it ,really terrible And the Pizza's well lacking of Topping was an understatement NOT GOOD and because we were all put in to this Tiny room the noise was Deafening

I have visited twice recently with work friends during our lunch break. Really pleasant staff. Food arrived quickly , with no reason to pre order like other pubs. It was thoroughly enjoyed but all of us! There is a gorgeous garden out the back for alfresco dining and drinking. Popped in for a drink last week with friends and order a bottle of wine. Waitor mentioned the fact the prosecco was 25% off so we went for that instead! Really recommend a visit! Pic is of the goats cheese salad!!! Lush xxx

Popped in here yesterday for a quick bite but ended up having a 3 course meal (deal they do for £12 on a select menu). It was all delicious, we ate every bite. Great flavours used in the chorizo starter and the burger/pizza we had was very good. The service was excellent, really nice staff.It was a bit of a chilly day but we were toasty in the sun in the enclosed patio area.I look forward to returning.

Visited the Gin Bar. Enthusiastic staff member making a wide range (about 16) different Gin cocktails. Tried two which were delicious. Choice of single or double measures in long drinks which were very well mixed. Open kitchen serving traditional pub food. Nice ambient atmosphere

Went here on Friday night for dinner. Food was delicious! Had some tapas to share to start and then both had a burger for main. Could not fault the food or drinks at all. The staff were all really friendly and attentive. We sat in the gin barn to eat, such a lovely place to be, they've really improved the place since I was last in there! The let down was there was no toilet paper or soap in the toilets... Worth a visit, but take tissues and hand sanitiser with you!

Went for a Saturday meal in the new refurbed Royal George. Love what they've done and the food was fab. The pizza we had was amazing, but to be fair, so was everything else. Good range of drinks, nice atmosphere, great food. Job done!

We had been to 3 pubs in Thornbury who were all unable to accommodate a party of 8 and 1 dog on a Sunday at 1pm. The royal George welcomed us with open arms, seated us in the function room in the loft which was great for us with 4 kids and a dog. The staff were really helpful and even sorted some Water for the dog at the table.We all order and the food came quickly. All the food was great I had the loaded buger and I tried my wife's roast chicken which was also really good.All-round great food and service would definitely recommend.

Lovely little pub where you could easily spend the day! Great menu and drink range, service was quick and friendly! So many areas to relax in for every occasion!

First visit under new management on a busy Saturday night. Excellent customer service. I chose a pizza and my partner had the steak which were outstanding - only thing was the skinny fries were not good, tasted as if they were cooked in old oil. Good addition to the Thornbury restaurant market!

Having recently moved to the area, we are still trying the local establishments.The royal George was no disappointment. A well decorated, relaxed pub/restaurant with excellent service, a fantastic range of beer and a good menu catering to most people's taste.The food is of high standards and of good portion sizes, with very little to moan about.Very well done.

Great to know the Royal George serves food all day, we stopped by for a very late afternoon lunch - 4pm - and had fantastic service even when the bar area was busy when others arrived, we weren't forgotten. Chorizo tapas still very tasty, the scampi came with way more crunchy chips than I could manage but they're good, and the minted pea purée was nice and light. My partner enjoyed the pork belly it was very succulent well cooked but just missed out on a wow without any crunchy crackling. The berry crumble was lovely and great to have a good thick topping of crumble. Toilets nice and modern and clean - always a bonus for us ladies! Would love to see a fish dish back on the tapas or mains, and squid tapas without the batter perhaps in pepper or garlic sauce? Trying to watch the calories! It had a nice vibe there today thank you.

Visited with a friend for lunch and couldn't have asked for more. We had the lunch menu which was £12 for 3 courses, the food was brilliant. Portions were large and food was cooked to a great standard. Couldn't have be more pleased with the service received, the staff were friendly welcoming and attentive at all times. Best service I have had in a long time! Will defiantly be returning!

We went as a group for a pre-Christmas meal which we had to pre-select so that their kitchen could cope. The food was nice and well cooked but rather plain with no flair or wow-factor. It is owned by the Bermondsey Pub Group under their Wig & Pen group of pubs. Their selection of twelve beers and ciders on tap was rather impressive. Possibly they don't know whether they are an Ale House or a Pub Restaurant as they have only been open a few months.

Beautifully refurbished, friendly, helpful staff and super food. 3 mezzes for £10.95,good sized portions and perfectly cooked and presented. This place is just what Thornbury needs and a great find for us. We thoroughly recommend it and will be back soon !

Really pleased with our second visit to The Royal George since the refurb. We sat in a chic little alcove tucked away across from the bar on a Saturday lunchtime without having booked, really cool to see a map of Thornbury above us on the ceiling, a nice touch. Comfy urban chic tan leather distressed metal chairs. Tapas starters very tasty, nice lady serving us and burgers cooked medium rare just as asked. It's been nice to duck out from the busy high street for a spell. Good to see they're keeping the standard up Thornbury has long deserved more gastro pubs the market for this has always been here. Would be good to see a fish option on specials - maybe on a bed of lentils or med veg. The cod fillet on fresh tomato and red onion salsa was lovely. We were expecting a ready made sauce so that was a nice surprise! Well done.

This pub has had an amazing refurbishment and is under new management. The menu consists of tapas, burgers and pizzas and a section of pub classics. I have been a few times since they opened for drinks, nibbles, lunch and dinner all have been great.The pub is really modern, the staff are friendly and helpful even when rushed off their feet. There is a great back room with a bar which is really stylish.Try the tapas and pizza very yummy!

Food and service was great when came here for lunch with my friend and her new baba. Had the burger and sweet potato fries with was delish and the cheesecake for pudding was gorgeous. All been really nicely refurbished and the outdoor seating area is lovely with blankets and heater now for the cold winter nights and a glass of wine :)

Decided to try the Royal George for Sunday lunch. Had their roast chicken which was done beautifully. Highlight though was the salted caramel chocolate crunch fudge cake. Mouth watering.Staff were very helpfull and was never in a hurray to make us leave or between courses. Drinks were expensive but a very pleasent way to spend a Sunday afternoon

We were looking for a place to eat that had onsite parking which seems to be lacking in England. We found that the Royal George has a spacious lot in the back. They also have a lovely outside seating area with built in firepit tables! We kept it simple and ordered a burger and a fish and chips. Both were perfectly cooked but the fish and chips was beyond good. It may be the best fried fish either I or my wife have ever tasted! The chips were also quite delicious and addictive. The service was great once we figured out that we had to place our order at the bar (which seems to be standard practice in England) before getting settled in. I have no plans to be back in the area anytime soon but I would definitely go there again if I was.

I have been to this pub afew times and enjoy it every time I go. The refurb looks good and it's a great pub if you want to sit outside in summer. They do get busy but it's worth it. Will go again

This place has just undergone a major revamp and still some creases to be ironed out. We went for the fixed price lunch deal but there was some confusion with the order and so we ended up with another starter. Mac and Cheese starter was superb - not near healthy but very tasty. The grilled halloumi just doesn't work - chilli sauce a strange combination of flavours. The final starter we had between the 2 of us was the squid - generous portion of crispy squid with lovely mayonnaise. For mains we had the salami pizza and the veggie burger. Unfortunately the burger came with sweet potato chips rather than the skinny fries requested. That coupled with a flat white which was anything but and afraid it was average overall. Has potential though and has lovely space out the back.

We thought we would try out the revised Royal George, now that the mezze has gone (we did enjoy the mezze, thought it was something different in Thornbury, so we were sorry to see it go).We went for family dinner shortly after their reopening, and found the service good, the new decor pleasant, and the food good. Overall a pleasant meal, although we would have liked to have seen a few more choices on the menu.
