Mettricks Portswood in Southampton

Only went in for a quick coffee and then followed it with a craft beer later on! Very lively place full of locals. It’s noisy by the bar downstairs of an evening and pretty cramped, but it’s roomy and quieter upstairs with proper seats and tables. For both coffee and beer this is a great spot and a southampton chain that is worth visiting! I had a gingerbread latte and the dark chocolate mocha is a favourite of my friends!

A great local Micro-brewery, serving fabulous pizza, including a vegan option which was delicious. Not too busy on a Wednesday evening but the payment system could get a bit congested if it was busier. I would highly recommend this venue. (Sorry I don't often photograph my food 😅)

Always buzzing here, so good coffee, food and beers, the staff are always friendly and helpful.

The floor is filthy and looks like it has never been swept behind the furniture on the top floor. Service is efficient but sullen. You have to collect your own condiments even when you request them which is to be expected in a Wetherspoons, but these prices are 3 x that of Wetherspoons. Food is nice but nothing special and not worth the price. Also all the vegetarian options on the menu are vegan and contain vegan cheese, which is just annoying.

Updated review: 1st visit 4* was overall positive just service took too long. 2nd visit was very disappointing because of the food. My pancakes were overcooked and dry, there was a very stingy amount of maple syrup even if I was to try and compensate the pancakes dry and overcooked taste. Would not go again for brunch.

A lovely place, for a drink or something to eat. Their homemade pizzas are fantastic. The staff are really friendly and helpful. With a great range of brewed on site beers and roasted on site coffee, what more could you want?!

Really glad they have reopened and the new brunch menu is great. Love the little hash browns! Really good pizza!

We really enjoyed our meal here, I had red wine and my son had the craft beer, plus a pizza and the olive bread. I guess I wouldn't order the olive bread again since it was literally a bowl of olives and some toasted bread, a bit too simple for my taste. However we really enjoyed the friendly and efficient service, reasonable price, comfortable seating and lovely atmosphere

Now I don't like Portswood much... However, Mettricks is my favourite spot so far, great food/drinks/atmosphere. Could chill with my mates as well as do some work :)

The piazza is very tasty, especial the Caprino. Taste good with tomato and onion grill together.

Had some lovely cocktails and beers with friends sitting in the stunning little garden area at the back of the pub outside. More people need to know about this little gem of an outside space! Very friendly service too 🙏

Excellent coffee, decent beer, and a fair amount of vegan options. Fun place for an evening, also good as a space to meet friends in the day or do some work.

My regular haunt, lovely food and great coffee served by very helpful and friendly staff. Can't say enough good about it. Even if you're just grabbing a coffee they're the best in Southampton for me! Great little beer garden as well for many different in house brewed drinks on tap

Lovely place to have breakfast/brunch and grab a coffee. The coffee is stronger than the more popular shops. The interior is quirky and cosy, the server was great and so was the food. The cakes look amazing too 😍 Would be good if they looked into doing a loyalty scheme for hot drinks in the future as we often go to the Mettricks (Town)

Went here on someone's recommendation. The food took quite a long time, and they forgot one order. We had to go down to ask for it. Service is a bit slow and one of the staff was a bit rude. I guess they are short staffed, but that makes it stressful for them. The food tasted alright, but slightly overpriced. Also, there were three people sitting on a table for 8-9 people. The staff should really sit the guests to make use of space during busy hours. We had split out group and sit separately.

Terrible club sandwich - it was untoasted cold bread, a tiny sprinkle of cheese on one half on the sandwich, plain mayo (should have been “herb”), luke warm chicken For £11!!!

Lovely cafe and service. But the reason for a three stars is because I find it quite expensive. I ordered a peppermint tea, latte and two cakes. That cost £17!!

Food is poor quality with 0 effort, very overpriced for what it is and heavily under-seasoned. Near £11 smashed avocado breakfast doesn't even have proper avocados on it, just the awful ready-made tubs of fake guac you get from the shops. Tiny portion on a single slice (not 2) that is barely toasted. Poached eggs are basically completely raw and wet including the white of the egg inside, just runs everywhere when you cut it. Not worth the money. Better to go to Trago across the road you'll at least get a full plate of food. Drinks are also made too sweet. And can we as a society move on from heavily up- charging alternative milks??!- some of us having dietary requirements/allergies and it's just ridiculous how much everything stacks up. 2 oat milk based drinks and 1 small breakfast came to almost £20. Disappointing, but very nice staff and atmosphere. I hadn't been before the refurb but sounds like it looked a lot nicer and brighter before. Now it's super dark and cramped. Unfortunately better to save your money and get breakfast/brunch/coffees elsewhere.

Favourite place to get coffee and get work done in Portswood!

We were told on ordering our food would take 25 minutes. An hour and twenty minutes later we eventually got our food but sadly it was not very hot. Also it was very annoying that lots of tables for four or six were taken up by one or two people when there were smaller tables available. Maybe staff should seat people appropriately at busy times.

Waited for a sandwich for over an hour and the cheese was raw. The sandwich was lukewarm and the prices are wayyyyyyy too high. Lovely servers and atmosphere but the food and waiting times were not worth it at all

Looks like to be Portswoods best keep secret at the moment lots of seating, food, some good beers on the bar and some brewing away in the new brewery...

My Husband & I visited for a couple of drinks on Saturday 6th April. It was really quiet and now I understand why. The atmosphere received from the staff was as cold and wet as the weather outside!!! we are often looking for somewhere to enjoy nice drinks and prefer to stay away from large in personal chains.

This is so nice. Really cosy and comfortable and just a great place to be. Very relaxing atmosphere. Perfect mood lighting and fab decor. The pizzas are delicious. The staff are lovely and friendly. The service was very. Would highly recommend a visit. They brew their own beer. It's a cross between a coffee shop and a pub. Lots of sockets for laptops.

Really good, very relaxed with decent food options. Breakfast choices are good, and the coffee is great. Fantastic range of beers and very excited to try those from the in house brewery!

Updated review after the refurbishment. Is still a nice place, just so overpriced now. Nearly £14 for veggie breakfast, basically couple of veggie sausages, half a tomato and bit of avocado and spinach. Great that there is a better beer place in portswood as well but looking at £6-7 a pint. To keep local people coming need to make more affordable

Had I written a review prior to their refit in 2024, this would have received 5 stars across the board. Mettrick's Portswood was genuinely one of the few gems of Portswood, a laid back atmosphere, open space, lovely interior and good food with friendly staff. Fast forward to 2024 and sadly what a difference a refit makes. Now losing more than half its downstairs seating to brewing equipment, most of the natural light and nature outside is no longer visible to see or in one case, a window is completely blacked out. The downstairs seating resembles more of a cramped classroom now losing the relaxed vibe it once had and where once, classic middle of the road tunes piped through the speakers, slightly more avant gard jazz fusion comes through. It's not without its positives, the coffee as always is excellent, the staff friendly and the ingredients of their food good. But by literally being across from The Mitre which again is spacious and good for cheap beers being a Greene King or Trago Lounge which haved upped their game in the food department recently, reasons to visit Mettricks Portswood have dwindled considerably. Don't write Mettricks off completely, better to go to the Guildhall branch which thankfully still has all the charms intact.

I had a previous review on here which was positive, but following the recent refurbishment in 2024, I have decided to submit another. I visited on 29th March with a friend and we were both disappointed with the service we received. First of all, the restaurant looked really short staffed on a Saturday morning with one staff member taking orders on the till and delivering orders to tables. He was struggling with this, whilst another staff member was focusing on drinks. This caused severe delays in food being served, along with orders being taken. I saw customers waiting 15 mins or more to have their order taken at the till with a queue. I ordered a bubble tea and a sticky toffee slice. Unfortunately, it took 25 minutes for me to receive the slice from the baked goods cabinet by the till and I only got it once I had asked three times. I understand that Mettricks may have new staff, but management should really schedule more people on a shift to cover busy periods. A couple with a child sat next to me, even commented that they were considering asking for a refund because service was significantly slow. The recent refurbishment seemed to focus on the brewery part of the business, but this has meant that this branch has lost a lot of seating downstairs and it feels cramped. The vault and balcony area upstairs is now open, but the loss of space is a shame.

Always good service here, plus a great vibe to hang out or get some work done!

Every time I’ve been here, staff have been friendly and knowledgeable. Atmosphere is lovely and a great place to wind down after walking through portswood.

Great breakfast here, service was a little slow 🐌 but overall i would return.

We waited 56 minutes for (some of) our food, having been told it would be half an hour. The decor, ambiance and facilities are really nice, but I had a hungry four year old and it just took way too long. When my pancakes finally came (at 58 minutes, yes, I did start timing after a bit) they were bacon rather than banana… I’m vegetarian so I know that wasn’t what was ordered. I ended up not eating. This was refunded without complaint by a nice member of staff, but yeah… a rare family breakfast out treat was basically ruined for us. If the kitchen is that short staffed, I would suggest you just stop taking food orders. We’d have had a coffee and cake, and maybe tried again. We’ll not be back again sadly.

Very good effort. The gentrification of Portswood continues apace.

Slightly better than average food, pleasant decor, friendly staff and a respectable clientele.. However, we waited nearly a whole hour for a very simple and as stated above, average quality breakfast on a recent late Saturday morning when, of all days, one would expect a fully versed team to be running like clockwork, it was instead a skeleton crew of for want of a better word, polite yet green teenagers running around like headless chicken in a restaurant not even at 60 percent capacity. Far from impressed and I would suggest spending your time and money elsewhere.

Set in a converted ex-bank building they've used the architecture to create a really welcoming setting. The seating is varied and comfortable with different kinds of chairs/stools and furniture. It makes for a lovely vibe and, when upstairs is open, there are opportunities for comfortable, slightly more private options. Lovely staff and service. Food and drink presented in a way that makes you come back as it has a personal touch. There take care of there customers. I would thoroughly recommend a visit for coffee or food if you are in the area :)

I have only given this three stars as the vegan breakfast had main items missing when served. When the sausages arrived after I pointed this out they looked under cooked.

Mettricks is one my favourite places. Sadly they didn’t deliver this time. Most of their food is good but their new addition to the menu was quite bad. Do not get the fried chicken pancakes! It was incredibly salty and the gravy was watery as well.

Was excited to go here for the first time given the great reviews, however whilst the drinks were really nice (coffee and milkshake), the service was not brilliant. I was told I could not even order food for an entire hour after arriving because the kitchen was ‘too busy’. Furthermore this was not communicated when entering, only when I went up to the till to order drinks wasting a lot of time. Having scanned the restaurant I could only see a handful of tables waiting for food and so I do not understand why I could not even make an order (would have been happy to wait)!

Made the effort to get out of bed (not order on overpriced apps) and have some brunch at Mettricks. It was a wise choice, food was lovely. We had the open breakfast wrap which is a millennial dream - with chorizo and avocado in it. And the place is dog-friendly so it was a nice bite before going on a walk. The staff were really friendly and service was top notch. We'll most definitely be coming back. The coffee had also got better since the last time I went to the Mettricks in Woolston, signs up saying they roast their own coffee now.

A great place for a coffee and a snack

AWFUL SERVICE. sign that says to get a table before ordering hidden on the till which you won’t see until you’ve been waiting for 10mins. 1hr wait for food, no clear indication on how long the wait would be. A wait is fine but let your customers know. Food arrived cold, bacon had raw fat.

Mettricks portswood was the location for our JSoc ball and they were incredible! The staff were incredibly accommodating, in particular their events coordinator Mia and the staff there on the night in helping set up and allowing us to bring outside catering for kosher food reasons. The event was a huge success thanks to the mettricks team! (And the espresso martinis were the best I’ve had!)

I love this place so much. Coffee is great, food is yummy (so far I’ve sampled the breakfast wrap and an amazing chicken burger), cocktails and wine are great, but the best thing is the staff are so lovely! Nothing is too much trouble and a special shout out to the person with fun hair looking after us last night- you are brilliant, thank you.

slightly conflicted about mettricks as the coffee has been consistently excellent, the food however, has consistently missed the mark for me. Had the in Liz we truss burger and the blue cheese overwhelmed other flavours in the burger, including the beef patty itself. Also had the pancakes and one of it was very burnt and they just flipped it over to cover it :/ it also took 30 mins for the pancakes to be served, which is really quite long for pancakes imo? And they were served cold too so….

Nice little cafe just a shame everything is so expensive and overpriced. I wasn't particularly happy that the staff member had not listened to my order properly and when questioned charged me for the items missing. This was their error not mine and I think the item should have been given to me at no extra cost

Have to say, I never expected what looked like be a small corner cafe from the outside to be a whole double level eatery! The interior was nice and cozy, and staff were friendly and professional. Although main meals are just about decent (they are a cafe after all), coffee and desserts are the BOMB. Chai latte is the best ive had in town 👍 Will come again and theyve got some nice seasonal discounts going as well

Can't make a hot take away drink... 3 out of last 5 have been warm at best.

Order via uber eats. Breakfast roll came without egg and hashbrown, £11 for a tiny roll with 1 sausage and a couple of scrappy bits of bacon! Pancakes are not freshly made, they are tiny, very dry and chewy reheated pancakes, which would be fine... not for £10 though! Would avoid this place, very, very low quality with high prices! Very much a disappointment.

Delicious hot chocolate! I was so amazed that they had white hot chocolate that I couldn't resist.

Absolutely amazing disabled wheelchair access- the disabled bathroom was easy to find with so much space for monuvering and turning. Staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, especaily my server Emily, as was overall an absolutely wonderful experience!

Completely empty, kinda of pricey, and the chicken sandwich was very dry. Good fries and beer and friendly staff.

Great coffee, milkshakes and other drinks. Disappointed with the food, it was over cooked and over seasoned. Mushrooms were leathery, egg solid and bacon well over done. Also got loaded hash browns, rather than loaded chips. Easy 5 star establishment when the cooked food matches the quality of the drinks. The cakes looked fantastic.

As a coffee shop. This is the new best shop in town, by a very wide margin. They have specialty coffee serving (V60, Aroepress) and beans (fresh single origins). The staff are kind and friendly. The only thing I am not amazed by is the food. They are ok, just not special.

We went there Saturday morning and had our coffe in the back garden. Coffe was good but, the bad surprise was when I went to the bathroom. The sink was so dirty it was almost black. Clearly, no one had cleaned it in a long time. One of the two bathrooms could not be entered because it was too dirty. I wonder if this was the condition of the bathroom, is the kitchen clean?

Thoroughly impressed by my experience here last night, the food was delicious and we were very well looked after by Chris and Kyle! The drinks were unique and unlike any I've had anywhere else - they are actually designed and crafted by Chris himself - wow! I highly recommend that you get yourself down here to enjoy all they have to offer.

We went here for cocktails, sat upstairs in the vault! Great music and delicious drinks, Chris was a great bartender and made us an amazing raspberry sour. Cannot wait to come back and try the new menus and live music!!! Really recommend

The bar staff are amazing, so friendly, kind and give honest advice. The atmosphere is cozy and the drinks were nice, but the food was a bit disappointing... the flavours were lacking, and I became ill the next day. Sadly puts me off eating there again, but would go back for drinks.
