What a truly magical experience! We were at the Mistletoe Mingler - yes, a pop-up Christmas bar in August.. and why not???? Everything was exceptional, the decor was astounding, glorious cocktails and utterly charming staff (especial shout-out to Manager Monika!). Snakes and Ladders whilst listening to all the classics in a totally immersive and intimate experience: truly memorable. We didn't eat, hence no score on food.

Went inside out of curiosity, was surprised they did not have a menu, but in fact they have a discussion with you that results in them making a cocktail tailored for your tastebuds. Matt provided a wonderful service, I had a fruitful conversation with him and this lead to Lina, at the bar, making me one of the best tequila sours I ever had! I had delightful conversations with Matt and Lina and the service was top tier. Will come again.

I would have given this bar 5 stars but for the racial profiler at the front desk who did her very best to make me feel very unwelcome. Top points for a very cold reception, asking me when I entered the bar “If I’m looking for someone”, therefore, assuming that I could possibly not have made a reservation; giving me the worst table in the room (wasn’t a table, but basically two chairs backed up against a side-wall), and rolling her eyes at me asking me “where I’m going!” as I got up to go to the washroom. Perhaps she thought I was there to steal peoples bags and phones - who knows what her narrow, prejudice and ignorant mind was thinking!! The person that served our drinks was great, however, very pleasant, professional approachable, recommended some fantastic mocktails but I’m afraid didn’t compensate for the racial profiler who pretty much ruined my evening. Top marks to her!

No menù hence you do not know how much you are going to pay. At the already high end price the bill adds a (not discretionary) service charge and (surprisingly) the VAT. Equating shy of 34£ for 2 cocktails. 17£ each are not justifiable by the drinks, the nice place and the good service.

Located down a side street and underground, you probably won't stumble upon the Merchant House bar but it's definitely worth going out of your way for. Decor is classic with leather panelling and banquettes. The cocktails were delicious - we were on negronis and the staff were very knowledgeable. No nibbles are served with the drinks but there is a bar snack menu. Only gripe is that there is no menu... idea is that you tell the waiter what you're in the mood for and the skilled bartender can create a personalised cocktail or you just order a classic (like we did). Issue with this is that without knowing the price you're slightly hesitant to order more drinks as you don't know what the bill will end up being and having a menu can be helpful as inspiration in deciding what to drink - I'd highly advise having a menu and this is probably what will stop me from coming back. For 2x negronis it was £33 which is quite expensive given they were rather small. Nevertheless it was a fun experience and location, decor and atmosphere were great.

Genuinely probably one of the worst experiences I have ever endured- zero customer service, what is the point. We were left alone for 60% of the time which meant we were without drink for at least 30 mins of the hour session. After being left alone we 'dared' to reach over the bar to refill our wine glasses only to be scalded by the staff explaining we were "not allowed to make our own drinks" (which is what our voucher actually permitted). We were made to feel like naughty children at school after being neglected for over half of hour allotted time. Then 1 second past our hour session we were asked to leave (with drinks still in our glasses). Truly could not recommend any less.

The words "hidden gem" are used a lot, but this place really is one. Hidden away, in St Pauls, the atmosphere is incredible. It felt so cosy and relaxing, & it was hard to believe we were still in London. The staff selected whiskies for me that I'd never tried based on my tastes & I've found a new favourite, which as a whiskey collector is huge. This is one of my favourite bars in London. It’s not in the most appealing locations nor is it easy to find but from the moment one steps it’s a different feeling altogether. The “no-standing”, “no-menu” approach stands out for me. The bar tenders and the waiters are very knowledgeable and make some mean cocktails which hits all the right notes. The atmosphere makes it a place you want to relax and spend a few hours. Highly recommend the place

Myself and a friend popped in to Merchant House, yesterday, at the end of an afternoon/evening of drams. We really wish we'd started there and could easily see ourselves spending a whole day there. The whisk(e)y bar is found downstairs and as you descend the stairs it opens up as a traditional and wonderfully atmospheric tavern. We were welcomed by Ritchie who put us at ease, straight away, and showed us around the bottles of whisk(e)y that Merchant had to offer. Is it the cheapest place? No. Drams range from £12.50-£20. Is it welcoming? Yes. Is there a fantastic relaxed atmosphere? Yes. Is there an audio book plying in the bathroom? Strangely, yes. This is somewhere that I would love to bring my whisky group and I will be back soon. Cheers all!

Cocktails were great and the bartender was professional. However the expectation of ‘enjoying music of your own choice, living it up with bespoke cocktails and basking in an interrupted atmosphere’ was sadly not achieved. Upon arrival the bar was very cold and not warmed up prior to our arrival and we were informed we could turn the heater on if we wanted to! When we enquired about the music we were told to turn on our Bluetooth and play our own music! This was not expected for the cost of the experience. Furthermore the Wi-Fi was not working properly, nor was there a network signal for either of our providers hence we could not actually play any music! This interfered with the experience for the majority of the hour, whilst I was attempting to rectify the issue but to no avail in an awkward silence. When subsequently challenged the manager responded ‘the Wi-Fi worked just fine for the rest of our guests’. However the bartender informed us at the time that this was a common problem with guests which needed to be rectified! Upon the issue of the cold temperature the response from the manager was ‘the bar is separated from the alleyway by a single door which of course affects the temperature on colder days’… surely this is rectified by planning ahead for the customers and simply turning the heating on? … Entirely unhappy with the managers defensive response and inadequate apology. Neither of these issues should be the problem of the paying guests. The review title reflects the music issue, the temperature of the room, the mangers response and by no means the ability of the bartender.

Unfortunately we experienced Merchant House when they were very understaffed on a Saturday evening. My husband and I arrived and ordered two cocktails, have to say, both fantastic - negroni and old fashioned made with rum. Two more of our friends arrived, one pregnant and ordered drinks, took a little while to come, mojito and soft drink. After, two more of our friends arrived and no one arrived to take a drink order, my friend tried to order at the bar but was told someone would come over, unfortunately they didn’t. Drinks were eventually ordered, another soft drink for different pregnant member of the party and a ‘bucks fizz’. Because drinks were taking so long we ordered another drink too. These took a really really long time to arrive. Our last order was 3 espresso martinis, which we were told would take time as the coffee machine was upstairs, which we were fine with. When these arrived unfortunately they were watery and not drinkable, the colour was a light brown in colour. We explained that these were sadly not ok and we would appreciate something being done on the bill to reflect this. We asked for the bill. It did not come and we had a train to catch. It still took several more reminders to come. The waiter then told us that it is to be expected with 3 espressos that they become watery… in the end we asked that they kindly be removed from our bill-as we didn’t drink them. They did do so. Service charge was added automatically, which we asked to be removed as we had waited so long for drinks, to which a senior member of staff responded ‘do you know how many staff are working tonight?’. This is not our fault nor should we be given attitude over removing an optional service charge. We then asked if we could split the bill, he shouted ‘how many of you’, to which we explained we wouldn’t be splitting equally as we had 2 pregnant members who hadn’t had cocktails. Paying for the bill was unfortunately a needlessly arduous task. So, whilst our first 2 cocktails were truly outstanding, the attitude of the service was unacceptable. While we totally understand being understaffed, and recognise this, we did not appreciate being treated in this way and therefore would not return or recommend.

My favourite cocktail bar in London, this is why... Pros: Hidden away from the main streets. The quality of service is exceptional and the staffs knows their stuff. If you enjoy good quality cocktails with no gimmicks and doesn't remind you of science class, this is the place for you. A nice classic ambience in the heart of St Paul, no drinks menu, yes no drinks menu, I usually ask the folks at the bar to make whatever, I just provide the base and they usually build on that. "Merchant House is home to some 600 whiskies, 400 rums & 400 gins" There are secret rooms in there too, and if you are lucky, you may get a tour, it is part of the appealing atmosphere. Cons: Do not expect to receive or make call whilst inside, sometimes, the WiFi connectivity is good, sometimes it is ridiculously slow. I'd like to see an alternative food menu to the current option which is just a selection of meats, pickles, olives. Conclusion: A must visit cocktail bar. You can thank me later. PS. No need to take videos or photos for Instagram, you'd be having a real good time.

We came for the brig experience. I can see some found this really good on previous reviews but personally we found the room a bit claustrophobic and too dark. It wasn’t helped by the fact I couldn’t pair my phone with the speaker on Bluetooth so playing our own music was an immediate issue. The barman we got assigned seemed awkward and found it really hard to break the ice. For one moment I felt a little bit cringy as we really weren’t hitting it off, he was a little stand off ish to be honest. Didn’t ask us what we liked other than spirits so I had a very sour cocktail to start with, which I didn’t like and the barman seemed like he was taking offence. I was expecting it to be a bit more professional and for the barman to lead the way and maybe explore our tastes more. He seemed too young and inexperienced in our view. Conversation flowed eventually but felt like we had to put the work in. The bar downstairs seems really nice. I feel we would’ve been much better suited to having a few cocktails there instead of the forced interaction of this experience.

To further what Anthony Freelove wrote, this place has maybe changed hands or something because I’ve been twice now and the second experience was wildly different from the first and not for the better. The first time I went was July 2021 on my birthday. The atmosphere was a bit dead but not everywhere was fully open due to COVID and there were still a lot of restrictions in place but the cocktails were at least decent. I paid about £75/£80 for 6 cocktails. The second time was a few weeks back when I recommended the place to some friends. We were seated and told they no longer give out menus. I ordered a Daiquiri, which wasn’t great, and an El Presidente, which again, wasn’t nice. I had an El Presidente here previously and it was interesting because they make it with sherry, which is different but this time it was horrible. Nobody enjoyed their drinks really. The bill came up and it was £115 for 7 drinks! A vast mark-up from my previous visit. I was charged £15 for the Daiquiri which for rum, lime juice and sugar syrup is a complete rip-off. They appear to charge £15 a drink as standard which is well over-priced for the quality and contrary to what their online menu states. I actually apologised to my friends afterwards. I was quite embarrassed at having recommended the place, both for the quality and how much the bill came to. I won’t be going back which is a shame as it used to be quite good.

BUT - no espresso martini, no coconut liqueur, no galliano. So 3 out of six drinks ordered 3 not available! They then came up with an excuse that they try to avoid products available at supermarkets. I asked for a rum and coke and they suggested rum and ginger beer - despite both ingredients being readily available at supermarkets!! Ruined the first part of the evening. Just do not get the concept at all - pathetic. There are many, many far better cocktail bars in London. But a lovely setting.........

Went here for my birthday and had the private bar experience. It was great, had good company they let you play your own music and our bartender Harry was an amazing host serving us great drinks and giving me good advise on making my own cocktail

It's gone downhill a lot from my first visits there. The staff member was unengaging when I went there last. They don't have a menu, so you have to describe what you want. I said "Something like a Manhattan, but not a Manhattan". And I was delivered... a Manhattan! My friend asked for a gin-based cocktail and they brought gin in a glass with a bottle of tonic water. Yes... the mighty minds of the bar thought a gin and tonic was the answer to our cocktail request. And despite their website saying all cocktails were £12.50 we were charged £14.50 for two of them. I wanted to consider it an aberration, and emailed them with feedback - but was ignored. I just don't think they care anymore. Go check out a bar like 69 Colebrooke Row or the Nightjar if you want cocktail excellence.

We booked this for my 40th birthday treat, all I can say is what a fantastic experience,we were met by a bar man called miguel who took us into the BRIG he was fantastic and I cant praise him highly enough. His cocktail knowledge was incredible and just kept them flowing perfectly after asking what spirits we liked, every cocktail was perfect. If your looking for something different do it.

An incredible underground bar which just has to survive the pandemic desertification of central London! Go there and drink, folks, you won't regret it. It has a quaint speakeasy atmosphere and a very clever concept on serving cocktails based on your preferred spirit and type of drink. You just give the barman your general preferences, likes and dislikes and he comes up with a masterpiece! On the evening of my birthday, Miguel mixed the drinks: he invented a long drink on a peat whiskey base that blew my mind and followed it with several elegant creations of different strengths and aromatic profiles that let all my friends know how talented he is. His colleague was also very attentive, charming and welcoming and the entire staff went out of their way to make it a birthday to remember. The bar also has a cosy private functions room with a beautiful piano. It's just an amazing little place deserving of your custom, if you are a cocktail fancier like me.

They’d run out of the sparkling wine that was meant to be in my cocktail so substituted it ... with lemonade!! This made it sickly sweet. Surely a different type/brand of sparkling wine could have been used. I can’t think why lemonade was thought to be a suitable substitute. Also, they’ve got rid of the menu! This makes it difficult to know what to order - please bring the menu back, Disappointing, as I loved Merchant House on my previous visit last year.

Fantastic whisky tasting in a cool setting. Monika was really helpful before I booked and then amazing when conducting the tasting; she's clearly very knowledgeable and made it a really memorable experience for us, including cocktail recommendations for afterwards. The only thing I'd change is the hangover the next morning!

Staff were a bit 'distracted' and unprofessional at the start of the evening, but as the night went on they became more hospitable, friendly and actually redeemed themselves... Turned into a decent night, even though the service at the beginning was not great. The venue and bar were lovely, the selection of Whiskeys and Gins were also amazing. Cocktails were hit and miss depending on who made them 🙈 My advice, please be more attentive to your customers - its the least you can do when your place was almost empty and we were a few of the only customer there! All in all, a nice place that's quite hidden away, I'd certainly go again :)

A must-see for anyone who appreciates the decorative arts, for anyone looking for people who dared to live their dreams and change the state of things and confront the standard. William Morris was all this and much more. The visit is inspiring, I was particularly touched that he believed in his wife and encouraged her to go further at a time when women were appendages to their husbands and female education was not considered necessary or useful. What's more, he believed in other women and provided trades so that they could be more autonomous. After visiting the gallery, I came to understand why there are so many antique shops in the neighbourhood and why Morris' prints can be found in many local businesses. There's a market that sells post-walk treats and a souvenir shop for all budgets. Entry to the permanent exhibition is free and the staff are friendly and helpful.

My wife and I were looking for some Thai food and saw this on Google and were a bit apprehensive seeing that it was also a pub. Walking in we were immediately greeted by the guys behind the bar, even when they had a number of customers they were serving, and asked what drinks they can get for us. We were clearly confused on where the Thai restaurant was and the guy was very friendly and showed us the way to the stairs and we took our drinks upstairs. The restaurant had just the chef to cook and wait tables and he was very friendly and the food tasted great. A bit weird when you're not expecting that setup with the pub but once we were there we loved it. Again, super friendly bar and chef upstairs and we felt very welcomed and comfortable the entire time.

Lovely hotel in a very busy bit. Not a place to try to drive to as there is little parking, pollution charges. Taxi, Underground good to go. Black Taxi a bit more expensive than Uber but Uber drivers have to Pay £50 for entering the City centre so to be fair use black cabs. Either that or book the same Uber driver in and out to help cover the additional cost. All you would expect in the hotel and bar as you would expect for this high-level establishment.
