Meng House in Chiltern

Top class. We’ve been struggling to find a decent Chinese since the Flower Drum in Watford closed. Will be regulars from now I think. 5 star.

Ordered for takeaway, when I picked up 40 mins later the guy asked me to wait 30 more minutes, as if it wasn't even an inconvenience. His only reason being 'it will take some time'. When I came back again he just said 'here you go', and handed me the order. Total lack of social skill, not to mention in a service industry. Bizarre

Excellent food quality at readonable prices and very good set menus for parties of 2 or more. Convenient location with parking across the road. One of the best Chinese restaurants in South Bucks, a hidden gem!

Absolutely outstanding. I was introduced to this restaurant by my sister in law. Booking is essential as it is quite small. The service is attentive from really friendly staff but the food...wow! It is simply superb, fresh cooked, with no MSG in sight, to perfection . No aftertaste of oil as in many places. Have to mention the crispy Manchurian lamb, a tasty and very welcome alternative to the ubiquitous Peking duck. A wonderful meal

We booked a table here for 7 people to celebrate Mother's day, when we arrived for our booking at 2pm, we were told that we would only be able to have 2 courses because the restaurant normally closes at 3pm, (in fact we were allowed to stay a bit past this time to finish our 2nd course). The food was very good but we had spent over £230 on food and drinks for 7 people and when we asked if we could take some of the remaining food with us, we were told No, because we had ordered from the Buffet menu. They claimed the reason was to stop people from ordering lots of food and taking it with them, but this reason didnt make sense because on the buffet menu, each person has a limited number of dishes they can order. (Its not an Eat-As-Much-As-You-Like Buffet). Considering we were also forced to rush our meal, I think this was not really a good way to treat customers. If we go here again we will definitely check that we are going to have enough time to eat our meal and also whether or not we will be able to take leftovers home (rather than them going in the bin!)

Recommended by a friend as the best Chinese around. Went on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant had several other tables occupied. Good sign. Waitress was terse, gave no time to ask questions and provided no descriptions. We felt as if we were an inconvenience. The service certainly did not warrant the 12.5% service charge on the bill. Food was acceptable but certainly did not reflect the price, higher than other local establishments. The experience was average, the price should be as well. Will not be returning.

New favourite place since our local Chinese closed down. Was recommended highly on Facebook so gave it a try… very kind customer service & good food to match. Thanks team.

Finally good Chinese food! Our food was made quickly but most importantly, delicious. We had egg fried rice, spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken and sea spicy chicken. Looking forward to our next visit.

Still the best Chinese food I've ever had - which includes a comparison with the fayre from the Good Earth group. I'm lucky that Meng House is only 4 or 5 miles away from me.

I have eaten here several times over the years. This is honestly the best Chinese food in the local area. Every dish here is full of flavor and very authentic. The staff are always very polite and accommodating. I always enjoy my time in this restaurant.

It’s simply the best Chinese food in Buckinghamshire!

We ate in here tonight, the lady taking the order didnt understand us which resulted in dishes coming wrong, food was generally bland had to cover it all in soy sauce to have a bit of flavour, they were lacking in choice of spirits had no spiced rum, the icing on the cake was the added to the bill 12.5% service charge, if you want a disappointing meal visit meng house

I have been going to this restaurant for at least ten years and have always found the food , staff and atmosphere wonderful . Love this place and have recommended to many people who share the same opinion and keep going back . Keep up the good work .

You call an order and ask how long as usual they don’t want to lose customer so grossly underestimated again. Food used to be good value and tasty. Now less so and expensive. The best Chinese takeaway we have ever tasted! Quality of the food and portion size was excellent for two people.The only criticism is the time we had to wait for the food. I would recommend ordering in advance to avoid lengthy waits especially during weekends. We will definitely be ordering again!

Used to use Meng House for dinner and take aways all the time. Always good up to about 3 years ago when the aromatic duck in our takeaway was dry, burnt to a crisp and virtually inedible on 3 occasions. We therefore switched to Full Moon at Chalfont Station who have been great. Went to order at Full Moon tonight but they were closed for staff holidays. So thought we’d try Meng House again in the hope they had improved. Phoned through the order, got it repeated back to me. My husband went to collect it 45 mins later as requested. They had no recollection of our order and would not be able to make it for at least an hour. It was already 8pm. Absolutely shoddy. Regret giving them a second chance. Won’t be making that mistake again!

After dining did not feel well. Now have investigated further and their latest food hygiene rating was a 1! This most likely reflects their standards and hygiene. Not sure why councils let them still operate after receiving the lowest score possible?

Booked a table for 4 last weekend, very welcoming and the food was prepared and delivered promptly. Food was of excellent quality and good portion size. I would have given 5 stars, except the restaurant was cold and my elderly parents had to keep their costs on.

Been using this restaurant for 3 plus years, but last night showed me how bad this place can be, the portions are now tiny, the food seems to have been watered down, the katsu sauce pours like water , not very nice. The service was awful asked for a brandy in a warm glass, given the excuse could not warm the glass! I suppose the saying is true familiarity breeds contempt Avoid save your money

Third time we’ve visited the restaurant in the last three months. Every takeaway meal was prepared quickly and to a very high standard. Great menu choices. Try their squid. It must be the best anywhere

No real need to elaborate the title says it all. The food was excellent and the service super fast and super friendly. The restaurant was reasonably busy but the staff seemed able to cater for their in-house diners and take away customers equally. Often we have found in other restaurants one or the other suffer long waits to be served. Definitely to be recommended.

We were family and friends and had a wonderful Chinese meal! We chose a set menu including mixed starter, crispy duck, chicken with black bean sauce, prawns, lamb with ginger and spring onion, sizzling, sweet and sour pork, vegetables and special fried rice. Everything was delicious and the bartender was most attentive, young and very welcoming! Highly recommend!

We booked a table for father's day. It was busy and staff couldn't cope with a full dining room and all the takeaways coming through. Food took a long time to arrive. We ordered separate starters and our orders were piled onto one plate so vegetarian and meat orders were together. Not good when one of us is vegetarian. The starter wasn't replaced despite pointing it out several times so the vegetarian had no starter. Mains took a long time to arrive - the food was good so we had no complaints there. When the bill arrived we were overcharged by £20 for drinks we didn't order and for the starter we told them we couldn't eat. They removed the extras quicklybut it was a bad end to an overall disappointing visit. We won't be visiting again. The two stars are for the food.

Ordered a takeaway and advised the restaurant that a member of the family was pineapple intolerant and on their advise ordered a chicken dish. The dish actually did contain pineapple and this could have had a serious health impact. However, the pineapple was spotted and we immediarely discarded and thew away the dish. The special fried rice ordered was actually egg fried rice. What a tasteless disappointment. We rang the restaurant and advised of the issues and were accused of lying. Disgraceful. We will not be using this restaurant again and suggest you do likewise.

A couple of our friends had recommended the Meng House so we went to the Sunday Buffet to give us a good sample of their food. The food was fine but it was not a buffet (ie , go up and pick just what you need). So we ordered various dishes not realising each dish was large enough for all 4 of us! Not surprisingly we could not finish all of the food and the 'waiter' informed we would have to pay for the food we did not eat! Given the menu says 'eat as much as you like' - we were rather taken back!! It spoiled the end of the meal, really. Service was slow but we had a good chat amongst ourselves.

I went in on Friday night...understandably busy and placed my takeaway order was told to take a seat as it was a 45 min wait...so far so good...I am a larger lady and there were two thin gentlemen also waiting for their orders...I was asked to go away and come back...the gentlemen were not...I came back at the appointed time to see two slender ladies waiting inside.. I was again asked to wait outside...whilst the service was polite it felt discriminatory and I was very upset by it. The food was as always excellent.

Possibly the best Chinese meal we’ve ever had. The food was delicious, all freshly prepared and great portions. The front of house staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Catered for ym wifes brithday family meal. 12 of us. No problems whatsoever. Food was prompt, plentiful and delicious. Certainly going back again soon.

Huge disappointment in customer service - we had two drinks and one starter and then waited for over 45 minutes for our main course. Eventually we left as we needed to be somewhere else for an appointment. Not really much of an apology and we left hungrier than when we started! This place needs to decide if it is a takeaway or a restaurant - the only words I heard to all takeaway customers was sorry for the long wait! I won’t be going back!

Ordered a takeaway over the phone last night, it was ready to collect in 20 mins. The food was delicious, the ingredients very fresh. Lovely, crunchy vegetables, we really appreciated the fresh pineapple! The restaurant looked very nice, very polite, helpful young man on reception. Will return to eat in the restaurant next time!

Great food nice waiters with huge bundas food came in under 20 minutes and meat cooked perfectly go here not to full moon. The writers were nice and friendly I told them about my allergies and they sorted it out straight away. I remember when it used to be a small little restaurant but now it’s turned into this.

I experienced a total lack of flexibility, zero customer service and a couldn’t care less attitude from the guy on the phone. Been using this restaurant for 20 years. Quality of the food has been going downhill and this was the last straw. You lost me as a customer last night. Never again!

Brilliant service and wonderful food from this place! Been around for years, and Ron is very helpful. We couldn’t come inside to get a small order (super cautious because of COVID), so called from out front and Ron brought the card reader outside to let us pay, and always provides great customer service!

As a takeaway it has been well organised to maintain distancing. Food is great, as it always is!

now at par with Ken. food quality has dropped. Kung Pao chicken has no peanuts. The only consistent dish is the prawn cracker. Takeaway have no labels so what you think is sea spice chicken could be onion and pepper chicken or vice versa. Serving...

I’ve been to the Meng House on many occasions but have to report the food was extremely disappointing on this occasion. It’s such a shame that a restaurant which once served decent food should now provide food that is flavourless, anaemic and unpalatable. Will not be visiting it again.

Great food and Frist class table service, the best restaurant in the area.

Have called time on this dated establishment. The only reason it still has some custom is because there isn’t much competition. Their Sunday buffet is nothing of the sort and completely soulless. The staff have no people skills and the owner is a rude woman. Well no more will we give them a pound note.

Had dinner here tonight.......the service was very attentive and friendly. The food was good enough but I have had better in many other places. There were many other diners so maybe tonight was slightly off for some reason.

This Place has bad customer service. The staff talks behind ones back in their language, which is Very unrespectful. Also they r rude when u have a food request u Walt to order.

What a shame. This restaurant used to be reliably good if a bit pricey. The last two meals we have ordered haven’t been good, with this evening’s being really poor. Butterfly prawns used to be big and juicy - now they’re small and dry. My boiled rice tasted weird on its own (I’m wondering whether I should even have eaten it...) and if you’d told me it was boil-in-the-bag I wouldn’t have been surprised. It was just warm. I had beef with black bean and green pepper. Also tepid and oddly devoid of flavour. No sign (or taste) of a black bean at all. Beef tasted as though it had been cooked yesterday and heated up with a bit of sauce out of a jar. Him Indoors had roast pork Chinese style and left 75% of it. Chewy, not fresh, dry and tasteless.

Table service and food: first class! A little pricey though and they add 10% service charge to your bill.

Such a shame that this retaurant is no longer what it once was. We have been visiting it for quite a few years, although the high price ment that for us, it was special occasions only. The prices were eye watering, but the food was to die for, which made it worthwhile. Sadly, the prices are even higher now, but the food is not a patch on what it was, I think their cheff must have moved on, because we gave it the benefit of the doubt twice before, but were disppointed each time....we won't be going back.

We went here on Mother’s Day due to another place letting me down, and wished I had booked here in the first place, they call it a buffet but everything was freshly cooked and bought to the table. It was a set menu for Mother’s Day but it was really nice to try different foods, my Mum loved it and hubby and I liked the different meals we were served, great afternoon at a great price

Ordered a takeaway for Mother’s Day as we’ve always enjoyed the food from Meng House (but today I didn’t think sitting in a restaurant with a streaming cold was fair on anyone!) & once we started to serve ourselves we discovered that the mixed meat noodles appeared not to be cooked & that none of the food was particularly hot. We decided to eat our food & phone the restaurant after as we didn’t want it getting any cooler & there were some edible noodles. When I phoned I spoke to a member of staff whose attitude was not customer focused. I explained my concern about the noodles & was told that they are served as crispy noodles. This is not how they are listed on the menu & is not how we have had them twice before. I was told that I did not like them as crispy noodles so had to repeat myself that it was not what I expected to receive, also there is a difference between crispy noodles & noodles that have clearly been shown a pan before being put in a plastic container. The staff member told me, in what she perhaps thought was a jovial manner, I didn’t like them but she would credit me with another portion next time - that’s great but I live over an hour away & typically only eat here when visiting family & it’s a special occasion. The attitude then changed to “I don’t know what you expect me to do” - I certainly do not expect to solve your customer service problems for you, especially as I wasn’t even given the chance to explain that the food wasn’t hot either as the solution from Meng House was “ we will credit you next time, thank you” end of conversation. Will certainly be thinking twice before visiting again.

We have used this restaurant for takeaway many times but haven’t visited for a long time. The meal was excellent. The special mixed starter had slightly more unusual items than we have had elsewhere and was both generous and delicious. The smoked chicken was particularly tasty. Mains were equally generous, well cooked and flavourful. We thought the special fried rice was an excellent accompaniment.

No issues with the quality of the food, but when our bill came to £150 for 5 of us with no bottles of wine ordered and 2 people were driving. Appetisers + mains + drinks.

I went with family to this restaurant having not been there for over a year. The food was delicious and well cooked. My son loves crispy duck with the pancakes which he announced was the best he had ever tasted. The service was attentive without being intrusive and indeed we had a great conversation with the waitress about where to obtain yellow bean sauce. I will not leave it so long in future before I return to the Meng House.

Ok I have given this restaurant a great review in the past, however I had the worse Chinese ever last night and as a result will not be using this restaurant Any more.
