Chef Zhu in Chiltern

Lovely meal at Chef Zhu - perfect prawn crackers, and good individual service as we picked meals. Happy to swap tofu into a meat dish for me. Food was really tasty, the vegetables were perfect and as fresh as you like, and my husband raved about the Beef with Ginger. We'll be back.

I have been for a meal tonight. Despite not being busy the food was perfect. Fresh out and home cooked. The waitress was lovely. Attentive and a lovley sense of humour. We did not feel rushed or under pressure to leave. Very hospitable. It’s just a shame that it isn’t supported by the locals. It’s a really super place to eat. Always high-quality food and lots of it. Pick-up times were good with efficient service. No phone orders but there is a convenient App to download.

We found Chef Zhu during lock down, due to the NO MSG, PRESERVATIVES or food colouring in their dishes. When trying it for the first time, I actually ate everything on my plate, which is rare! After other Chinese take aways, I'm usually full after a few mouth falls. The food here is delicious and so tasty, It was like I was taking Chinese food for the first time! It is now our favourite Chinese take away! The food is tasty and reasonable and well presented. Would definitely recommend. The staff are polite and professional especially during covid restrictions. Make sure you try this place out!

Food is the best around.There service is the worst around.I have ordered a number of times for takeaway using app and never ready on time.I have even collected the wrong order even after telling the worker i thought it was wrong only to return it with the owner trying to charge me for it.Again very nice food but be prepared to be messed around.

Really like this chinese..have only ever had a takeaway from chef Zhu but everyone we have had has tasted excellent, with no MSG (unlike some alternative places).and is always freshly cooked. Wish they had a few more vegetarian options though.

In these times of lockdown there are places whose standards might slip. Not here! The takeaway that we collected was freshly prepared and delicious, I highly recommend the chicken and cashews. I’m sorry my visit wasn’t at a time when the restaurant was open for dine in but we’ll be back soon to experience the fabulous service we’ve always loved. Suzy and Ryan work so hard to make all their customers feel welcome. Thank you too for my birthday treat!

Worst chinese restaurant ever, the chicken satay tasted like rubber, the seaweed had no flavour and the soup was like drinking water with sweet corn. The mains were all vile and had no flavour at all. The only dish which was edible was the chips. My boyfriend explained that the food was horrible, to which they asked did we want to take it home?! The young waitress was lovely throughout and apologised for the food. When my boyfriend spoke to a ?manager he said there was nothing they could do as we said the food was fine, which we didn’t!!! Another ?manager started recording us, laughing saying they already had eat out to help out discount!!! We should have know it was going to be terrible, when there was only one other family eating at 19:30 on a bank holiday!!!

Decided to try a takeaway from here as most other options closed due to lockdown. Where to start? Looked on their website, which said you can order via their app, which in theory is a good idea. In practice, rubbish. They want you to leave all your card details on a message board - no security whatsoever. Ended up calling them. Took a long time to answer, couldnt transact the card over the phone, so was asked to pay on collection. 15 minute difference between collection time on app and the later time I was given over the phone. Guess the earlier time was actually correct, as the food was only lukewarm. Bizarrely, the food was given to me in a paper bag, with the prawn crackers and chopsticks in a stronger, plastic bag. Perhaps I should be grateful that the hadles of the bag fell oof and the bag disintegrated due to leaking food, on my drive rather than the car, as I ended up picking the containers up from my driveway and washing away the leakage/bits of food that fell from a cos just about ok. Negatives - much more expensive and smaller portions than any other Chinese/Asian restaurant that I have used. Salt & pepper ribs did not taste of salt and pepper. Strange taste and were quite tough. Chicken curry did not taste like any kind of curry - either Indian, Thai or Chinese. Very watery with what was obviously very cheap, pre frozen breast slices from a supermarket economy range. The Tofo dish was just not nice - greasy and flavourless. We were both very disappointed with the food and would not return. Needless to say, I have also unistalled their app!

First impression was poor when we were given a bingo sheet to order our food. Why? Lousy idea. Then the food came, never tasted Hot and Sour Soup like this before, its was really bad. Then duck which seemed ok. Then main courses, which were poor quality and taste. Couldnt wait to leave.

We went for an early dinner on a Sunday and it was surprisingly busy. We had been once before over a year ago and loved it. This time however, although the service was excellent, the food was not. A pile of duck which was not hot or crisp. stodgy, chewy squid and prawns and bland beef. Our disabled friend was looked after admirably and it was a pleasant environment (they even turned the music down as I found it a bit loud). I imagine it was the chef's day off and the the stand in was not expecting a busy night.

Quite a while since we last visited and although the service was good and attentive, the food at best was average. We had half a duck as starter, it was a pile of shredded duck but no skin ! The fried rice was fine but the singapore noodles oily and tasted of curry powder. Sizzling prawns were ok but the sizziling beef almost tasteless; we had three othe dishes but nothing stood out.

Great staff, amazing food, this place is fantastic. Now a regular both eating in and take away, and now they have great wine. Salt & Pepper ribs to die for (something did!).

Always a wonderful meal from Chef Zhu. The food is freshly cooked and contains no MSG, preservatives or food colouring. It tastes fresher than the usual style of chinese food, it's addictive. Staff are warm and friendly. It's a pleasure to eat there. A real bonus for the village of Chalfont St Peter.

Just had the worst Chinese takeaway I’ve ever had from Chef Zhu.Greasy. Tasteless. You ca just tell when ingredients are cheap and low quality.We had dishes with either no sauce or the wrong sauces (from typical Chinese dishes).Spicy when it shouldn’t be.Prawn toast like a strip of mother’s pride cheap bread.We called to complain.The attitude we got back was appalling!Most of the food went into the recycling bin.We were told to bring the food back so we had to get back in the car and return what was not in the waste bin.On returning it, with 2 other couples waiting service, all the food was laid out and we were begrudgingly offered a discount on what was returned... approx 40% of the total bill.I understand all restaurants have bad days or bad meals.Bad attitude is inexcusable!We won’t be returning

If I could give zero stars I would!!!!!!Visited with my boyfriend for a last minute mealout and thought we would try Chef Zhu on the high street however wish I had read these reviews first!!Our starter came - was yuk! We complained and then told nothing they could do - do we want something else - decided to just order mains and then after 45 minutes complained that we had been waiting for so long only to be told by the so called manager that there was a “wait” for mains and ours had only just been started cooking. So we sat and waited and then mains come and the food was mediocre at best! Tepid noodles and hardly any beef in our noodles either!!Worst Chinese restaurant EVER!!!!! And the staff are Incompetent and RUDE!!!!AVOID!!!Go to Maya!!!! They are kind, respectful and the food is on point !!!

Wifey & I visited with friends for dinner. We were seated pleasantly and our young lady waitress was a delight.

Food was really poor and service was similar to being in a takeaway restaurant ticking boxes against menu choice. Some of the food was cold and very expensive

male waiter / manager at till was extremely rude and gave unpleasant service. However the young woman waitress was very kind and approachable. We will not be coming back here

Chef Zhu is my absolute favourite local Chinese. The food is delicious, and without any of the nasty additives. Really fresh and tasty food, rather than neon colours and greasy sauces. A little more expensive but totally worth it!

I truly lovely local Chinese Restaurant serving fresh food, all cooked to order. It is also very reasonably priced especially considering the area.

We visited early on a Friday evening. The restaurant was quiet but the service was excellent and the food event better. No preservatives or MSG and all food was cooked order. Parking outside was easy and all in all a very pleasant experience. The next time cricket brings us to that part of the world we will definitely visit again.

We loved Chef Zhu! One of the best Chinese restaurants around! All super fresh. The inside isn’t your normal Chinese restaurant but the food stands up on its own. Only downfall was the ordering system it’s slightly strange if you ask me. Highly recommend!

Thursday night and surprisingly quiet. Dim sum style starters excellent. Deep friend pork dumplings, steam prawn dumpling, chilli wanton and sesame prawn toast. Deep friend squid with chilli and onion cooked to perfection, a slightly overly salted chicken kung po, excellent broccoli and garlic with chow mein. No wine. But mineral water and jasmine tea. Delightful service and all for 62 quid. We will 100% be back

Time in time again we come back to this lovely quaint restaurant in the heart of Chalfont St Peter and each time is like the first, it never disappoints, service is outstanding and the food is fresh and full of flavours. Totally recommend this family run gem.

The food took to long to come out, 45minutes we had to wait for our main course. The waiter was rude as hell, he said it takes on average between 40-45minutes between starts to a main course in the industry so he couldn't do anything than make us wait. Attitude was terrible. Never again will I be returning! Bad attitude towards my partner also.

The food at this Chinese restaurant is great, but everything is repaired fresh. This means if you order a takeaway it can take an hour. Plan ahead as its worth the wait. If is the best Chinese restaurant around, with great flavours and well presented food

We went in on Tuesday for Chinese New Year and had a fantastic meal. I really love the home made plum sauce with the crispy duck and we had a tempura fish dish with ginger and spring onions which was fantastic too.

Having just returned from London, just stopped at first eatery in Chalfont St.Peter. Good choice, waited a little longer than normal ,as they cook to order.. Worth the wait. Fresh chicken and beef dishes, piping hot. Friendly staff.

Been looking for a nice Chinese Restaurant in the area for a while and found this little gem. Great quality food and very attentive waiting staff. Highly recommended.

Limited menu. Small table but par for the course. Food, nothing special.Went on a quiet Thursday, so service was on par for an empty restaurant. Went home, unusually after a Chinese meal, still hungry. In no hurry to go back, wouldn't diss it, nor recommend it.

Fantastic tasting food, not greasy, great service, very welcoming staff, reasonably priced. Would recommend it.

As ever had a wonderful meal in here this week for my birthday, the homemade plum sauce with the crispy duck is fantastic! Service was really good. This family run restaurant is a gem and during busy times I know you can wait a little for food but that's the reality of genuine home-cooked and authentic food cooked within a small, family restaurant. If there is a wait they always say as you enter so you know what to expect.

I was excited to order from Chef Zhu hearing some good stuff. Sadly it didn't deliver for me, but it might just be a blip in their service/offering. This review is for their takeaway service, NOT their restaurant service that I'm sure is better.

11 of us had a great meal at Chef Zhu to celebrate a birthday. They were able to accommodate us all and looked after us superbly; the food is delicious too.

A few days ago 5 of us went to this restaurant for an evening meal. The menu was varied with a lot of choice.

I loved Chef Zhu food! The inside isn’t your normal Chinese restaurant but the food stands up on its own. Only downfall was the beers come in cans! Slightly strange if you ask me. Highly recommend!

We chose this place because the reviews were good and parking seemed easy. It was a hot day and we were immediately given a jug of iced water with lemon wedges, which was very acceptable. The menu choice was standard Chinese, and we had several dishes, all of which were good. The duck with pancake rolls was excellent. Service was attentive if a little slow - no problem as we were with friends and had lots to talk about.The only slight criticism was there was no air conditioning and no fans.

We rang and ordered 4 portions of Singapore noodles to take away: 2 regular with meat, prawns and vegetables, and 2 without the meat. I was told it would be ready in 25 minutes. I arrived and was told, by a very friendly chap the order was just coming. A person also waiting for take-aways complained she'd been waiting nearly an hour. After about another 20 minutes the man told me there had been a mistake in my order and the prawns had been left out and it would be another few minutes. After another 15 minutes I enquired as to how long would it take to throw a few prawns in and give me the food. I was offered a bottle of beer which I accepted and was eventually given the packet with apologies after waiting 50 minutes. All this I can forgive at a push, after all the restaurant was full and the 2 waitresses were doing their best. Though it's not a very big place. However when we opened the packets at home there was virtually no meat, prawns or vegetables. Just a large portion of noodles. Having paid £32 I find this a complete rip-off and will not be going back. In all fairness there are some good reviews and the place was full - it was a Saturday. Just be prepared to wait ages (some diners exiting at the same time as me said they'd also waited an hour for their food) and don't go near the noodles.

We have just had a family meal at Chef Zhu and travelled from Chesham to do so. We will be making that journey every time we want a Chinese meal from now. We were served by friendly, attentive staff and the food was some of the best I've tasted.

The food is good the service was fantastic the bill was a little pricey. Only one small moan was the duck was not crispy. Our waiter was fantastic we where taken back with his service 10/10. Will have to go again soon.

Delicious crispy duck, light and cooked to perfection, and the prawn stir fry was one of the nicest things I’ve ever eaten! Beautiful fresh ingredients and no glutinous sauces. You can’t get better than this

Hadn’t been here before and it was recommended to me by a very good friend. The whole experience was superb, the staff are so friendly and polite and offer service that is second to none. The meal was the best I have ever had from a Chinese restaurant, whether it be a sit down meal or a takeaway. Can’t recommend it enough and they deserve to be packed every night. GO THERE!!

We loved the chinese food here, mainly because of the fact that it was all freshly cooked and without any dreaded MSG...! The food was tasty and served in a reasonable timeframe bearing the above point regarding fresh cooking. As the place is also a takeway, we thought the ambiance lacked something but we were so taken with the food that it didn't really matter. Also, very attentive service!

We decided to order after the great reviews, I know wish I had stuck to my normal Chinese restaurant. The food is expensive and very bland.

I’ve had quite a few takeaways from here and the food is really tasty. It’s like a healthy home cooked meal rather than the mass produced food you get from many restaurants.

We had the most delicious meal served by extremely friendly staff and yet only four tables were occupied. Plenty of people coming in for takeaway but they are really missing out on a lovely restaurant experience. That said, it was Chinese New Year but no effort was made to highlight this save for a "Happy New Year" after we'd paid the bill. I suspect the management may be a little inexperienced - they definitely missed a trick here. We'll go back and hope for a bit more atmosphere next time.

We've been here 3 times now and absolutely love it! Our most recent visit was on New Years eve with friends. We were greeted by very friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Service was perfect also, very attentive. The food is delicious, the sizzling beef is AMAZING!!!!!! Food came out quickly. Portions are massive and very reasonably priced so it's great value for money.

On recommendation we dropped in here to grab a takeaway for a group of us. Suzy & Ryan were friendly and helpful and the restaurant is very elegant and modern looking. I felt disappointed that we wouldn’t be staying to eat! However, the food we unpacked at home was one of the most delicious and authentic Chinese meals I have eaten in a very long time. Takeaway certainly did not mean a slip in standards, this was most definitely restaurant quality. I look forward to an opportunity to eat in at the restaurant and enjoy the ambience.

Simply beautiful, tasty, 'clean' Chinese food. No MSG, so avoids the unnecessary stickiness and over salty characteristics of so many Chinese restaurants. This place is a favourite of our family.

My husband and I went to the restaurant mid week on the spur of the moment. It was our first time there. We thought the food tasted really good and came freshly cooked. The service was efficient and very friendly. There wasn't much of an atmosphere in the restaurant but then it was quiet.

Ate here for the first time last week. Restaurant was pleasant and clean, the food was good and the staff are very attentive, friendly and helpful. We will definitely eat here again. No car park but is is quite easy to find a parking space on the road outside.

We have had many meals at Chef Zhu and every time we've had a great experience! Food is very tasty lovely and fresh, the waiters and owners and very kind and friendly making sure that each time is as good as or better than the last! Please keep doing the same!

My wife and I had a takeaway today. Really good authentic Chinese food well cooked and packaged. As ever we ( I ) over ordered by a fair margin but it was beautiful. Seems good value. Very pleasant staff. Well done.

Had a takeaway from here on the 13/12, the food was okay, but nothing impressive, especially as with only rice, 1 vegetarian dish, a chicken chow mein and some chicken balls it came to £24, which in comparison to others, seemed more expensive than normal. I had chosen this Chinese as a change from others in the village as I had heard it was fresher, but that's not what it tasted like. Disappointed and unsure I'll visit again.

Nice restaurant inside, staff are really helpful. Starters are really tasty, particularly the prawns. Mains were a bit average, nothing stood out. Would probably go again.

Had yet again a lovely meal in here 3 weeks ago, having eaten in here upwards of 20 times now I can't say I recognise the place from some of the reviews below! Occassionally at busy times service can be a bit slower but that is the most negative thing I could say, we've never had a bad meal here. Everytime we come in there is another picture or another bit of decor, they've started from scratch and are trying to build a business up.

£42 for beef chow mien with about 7 bits little bits of beef plonked on it, a bit of rice and 2 spring rolls, 2 small glasses of wine. No Chinese atmosphere at all. Feels like a doctors surgery with 2 little Chinese lanterns hanging on the wall. Prices need to be less and the place seriously needs to have investment on decor. Both me and my partner was not impressed and other people in the village did pre warn us not to bother. But we wanted to see for ourselves. Unfortunately they were correct.

We had a takeaway from Chef Zhou last night and sadly won’t repeat it! The half duck came with only pancakes - no sauce, no cucumber, spring onion ..... just dry duck with pancakes - not edible so £19 in the bin!

Had a takeaway after reading the rave reviews in the local free magazine. The salt and pepper prawns were good, the Singapore noodles were virtually all noodles with almost nothing else, the vegetable spring rolls were nearly empty, the cashew nut chicken had very little taste and the crispy, shredded beef was tough. Will not be using again.

Had a fantastic meal with family. Excellent service and superb cuisine. Definitely the best Chinese in the area.

Very poor all round. First attempt to eat there, called and called to book a table but no answer, this was shorty after they opened. Second attempt, just turned up. There were 4 tables occupied so plenty of space. There was no atmosphere, very much like a shop rather than a restaurant. We were told that we could have a table but it would be a minimum of 45mins before we would be able to be served any food as it was quite busy. I’m not sure I would class less than 1/3 of the tables being taken, busy. We went somewhere else. Third attempt, we thought let’s go for a takeaway instead. The rice and noodles had virtually no flavour and the prawns and crispy beef were soggy. The prawn crackers were very hard and again, no flavour, even my dog wouldn’t eat on!

Great Chinese food. Still early days for this little family run restaurant, but the food really does speak for itself. Not been disappointed yet.

Service was excellent. Warm welcome and friendly. They were attentive without being overbearing. The food was tasty, fresh and portion sizes were good. My only small gripe was that there could have been more meat on the spare ribs. Overall we really enjoyed our meal and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

I've never ever before walked out of a restaurant because after being so poorly treated, in fact we were one of several tonight who did the same.

The review are good, so I was really looking forward to try this place as there aren't many Chinese restaurant locally and I love Chinese food.

Went in with the family as we didn't want a heavy traditional Sunday lunch. Staff could not have been more welcoming, very friendly and lovely to our children. We went because the children have decided they now like duck & pancakes & we didn't want food with all the msg in. We ordered the duck & pancakes with extra pancakes & veg as they love cucumber. It was lovely - not fatty or greasy & the children said it was some of the nicest they had had. Hubby said could have.been slightly more crispy for him but fantastic taste & not fatty at all he was impressed. We had spicy noodles - lovely just enough to make your lips tingle but allowing you to taste the flavours. Chilli beef, crispy beef & a chicken dish. The beef dishes were our favourites. Finished with a tea - a large pot & piping hot perfect to linger over. It was a shame were the only people in there as the food was very good & with drinks - some alcoholic & a cocktail as well as soft drinks came to around £80 which for the area is very good and st other local eat in Chinese style restaurants probably a lot more. We would defiantly go back again. Good food not greasy at all. No MSG. Lots of veggie & gluten free options too. Clean restaurant, modern decor. Plenty of parking outside on a Sunday (very quiet) the pay & display car park a short walk away is free all day Sunday so parking easier than GX. Just wish this restaurant was closer to us.

We've enjoyed many meals from Chef Zhu and have always been impressed with the standard of their food. Everything is freshly cooked to order with no artificial colourings or MSGs. Always a warm and friendly welcome and fabulous choices for vegetarians. I've not found a better Chinese restaurant for miles.

Best Chinese food by far, eaten in the UK. Been to China a number of times and Chef Zhu's food is comparable to top restaurants over there. The food is so much fresher tasting than most Chinese restaurants and take-aways. So lucky to have such a good family-run place in our village. Great service, ambiance could be improved.

Fantastic service for my first take away. The food was tasty and spicy but not hot, we had the duck with pan cakes and shredded beef in black bean sauce with rice. Portions are a good size so do not over order as you will not be able to eat and waste money.

We noticed this when it first opened and were keen to give it a try, as the area is desperately in need for an affordable and good Chinese restaurant.

Having seen good reviews we tried this restaurant for the first time. Early on a Sunday evening there were a few tables taken so we took one in the window.

After a long day at work and still another meeting to attend, I dropped in Chef Zhu for some dinner. This was my first visit and asked for a recommendation from the beef selection. They suggested #30 sautéed beef with chilli and black bean. Great recommendation! It's now my favourite!

This has become our favourite restaurant, the staff are very friendly, clean restaurant with Very generous portions and freshly made food. We can't fault any of their dishes we just love them all. Also the take away food is just as good as eating in which is a bonus.
