Mende's Fish and Chips in Wokingham

Been to Mendes a few times and it's a reasonable drive for me to go there. Food is very nice, staff are very polite and helpful and the prices are fair. On my last visit however the chips went straight in the bin, the potatoes were manky and had been sat for ages and we're totally inedible. This however has been the ONLY issue I've ever had so still giving 4 stars, it did leave me hungry though!

Yummy fish and chips, friendly and super polite staff and a 5* food hygiene rating - what’s not to love! Would highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic fish & chips , not just that the family that work there are one of nicest family i have ever met. Mende well done to you !!! You are such a dedicated person to what you do. You have completely turned that fish & chip shop to something so good and tasty and so welcoming to come in. The staff that work there are so lovely! So thank you all ! I recommend to anyone to go and get some food from the village.

Can't speak for the fish & chips. However, avoid the beef burger. Far too dry & hard. Unfortunately, I ordered a double which made the eating experience twice as depressing.

Just had the most delicious fish and chips. The fish was perfectly cooked, with a delightfully crispy batter. Our first visit here when first opened was very disappointing but we've since had a few meals from here and been very pleased with every one. ...also, they do gravy!!! Yes!!!

Today I went to Mendes finish and chip, it says super tasty and good. I had a chicken burger that was 10/10 my family had fish and chips they loved it. This is the first time we go there. The chips are fluffy and crispy. Highly recommended.

Had a takeaway and have to say it is the best fish and chips I have had in a very long time. Not at all greasy and lovely light crispy batter. Fish portion was small but excellent and chips very well cooked.

Very good tasty food, great portions and great value for money

Let’s not beat about the bush. The Fat Fish was poor. Glad to see Mende’s takeover the fryers and finally start cooking fish without the skin (what is it with fish and chip shops in the south leaving skin on?!?) and doing it well. Only gripe is the portion size has dropped. However, the quality of fish has gone up significantly… I presume Fat fish used frozen fish, as the texture used to be awful. At least Mende’s have better fish, despite the small portion! My recommendation to Mende’s, chuck a few more chips on :-)

Extremely stingy and soggy portions of chips for the high price on both occasions a ‘large’ portion should be about a medium at very best and chips. We’ll be sticking to the chip shop & Chinese on Station Rd- there I don’t feel like I’m getting ripped off

Just had another meal from this venue, fish and chips and vegetarian burger and chips. Not a crumb left two clean plates.

Some of the best fried fish and batter we have had. The oil was fresh and it reflected well in the food. Highly reccommended

Try the pensioners lunch £7 for a small cod and chips with mushy peas. Well cooked and very filling.

Absolutely fantastic i am so impressed with everything the food was a 10 out of 10- the service quick and everyone is so polite all of the staff, the cleanness in this shop i have never seen anything like it in any other fast food restaurant. The atmosphere unbelievable the new management has turned this place completely around to an amazing restaurant. Twyford has never ever had anything like this all the years that this place has been there. I would recommend to everyone to go and try it. You will never regret it!!! Well done to the management there you have done an amazing job!

They have a variety of delicious meals, everything was warm, tasty and finger licking good🤌🏽 The stuff is so lovely and welcoming, kuddos to them for keeping the place spotless!!!! I highly recommend it and would definitely come back again! 😊👏🏽

My first impression was the cleanliness of the place. It was spotless! The joint has a couple of tables, which is preety convenient. The staff is very polite, friendly, and helpful. I had the Haddock with a portion of chips. The batter was exceptional, crispy golden brown, and no oil. The chips was excellent, evenly cut and fried to perfecrion. I definitely recommend this place! It is one of my favourite Fish and Chips' in England.

I’ve visited this chip shop twice now and on both occasions the chips were hard, stale and tasteless. Most certainly will not be returning

Easily the worst fish and chips I have ever had. The batter absorbed so much oil that when I lifted it from the package it dripped all over my shirt. Chips were undercooked and oily with an odd smell of oil that has being reused over and over. Not coming back.

Used to be great, but since the new management the portion sizes have literally halved, got a large chips and it was the size of a small anywhere else and still cost £3 (£1 more than before!). Disappointed all around used to love this place

Disgusting, the fat fish used to be amazing, just paid for large cod & chips. Fish cake mushy peas & curry sauce. Large consists of roughly 30 chip. Large cod was full of bones and so thin, it looked like it had been run over & a really small potion with soggy batter. I arrived home within 5 minute food was stone cold. Will never go back. Ive just reordered dinner from the lemon place where the fish & chip are beautiful fresh, large boneless crispy & hot. Really does not deserve one star, tasteless & mean potions Staff (young lads) were rude & obviously didn’t want to be there. No fat fish at this take away !!!

What’s the point of advertising a 2pm lunchtime close if the bone idle staff close up at 1pm

Disappointing they don't offer any options for vegetarians in this day and age. All the fish/chips are cooked in the same oil as the meat sausages. When I inquired the man just scoffed at me, as if having a food preference isn't my personal choice, but a joke of some sort. Not impressed.

Definitely the best chips in the whole of Great Britain, not even joking. Most underrated chippy in the world.

Lived in Twyford for 16 years. First time I tried it today as the station chippy was closed. I spent £42 on 3 large cod and chips, some anaemic mushy peas and a couple of curry sauces. This was, without doubt, the worst fish and chips I've ever had. Thin and tasteless fish, horrible chips, the oil used was tastless and nothing was crispy and fatty. The mushy peas were mostly water and the curry sauce wasn't spicy in the slightest. I will never go back here. Simply awful and a complete waste of money.

Best battered sausages and chips. Prepared relatively quick and good prices.

Staff are always really polite and friendly, food is exceptional. No complaints at all.

Terrible fish and chips - chips uncooked - batter had no taste- won’t be going there again

Although it was 5:40pm there wasn't a queue, fish and chips served straight away, staff pleasant. However, once home, which was within a few minutes, the fish and chips were not very warm and were not fresh, fish dry, kept/leftovers from lunchtime we believed. Not nice at all, sorry guys!

Absolutely horrific. Soulless staff, awful fish which had barely any fish on it, chips were like crisps, will never go there again. Complete waste of £15 🤬🤬🤬

This place has completely lost the plot. A "large" haddock and chips now costs you over £10 for a measly portion of what I can only describe as soggy fish. A real same, as the staff are generally polite. I'd go elsewhere even if you're a local.

This used to be a great place for fish and chips . Now however it's like the chips need a spray tan because they have no colour or crisp. And the fish is poor and undercooked it's like tempura sushi. Just please cook the chips longer and buy better grade fish and bring this back too the hayday

I keep giving this chippy a chance but the quality is very much hit and miss. Once or twice its been great, There have been many times where I've just had to throw the fish away. On several occasions the fish has been hard and dry. On some occasions, the chips have been damp and cold. Very frustrating when you've got family round.

Um very nice service, nice chips and tartar sauce, mush peas bit over done too much liquid still ok, the fish I was very disappointed, reason the batter on my fish was only on one side, also very greasy needs more care preparing the fish,

Very disappointed as this shop used to be very good. Been a while since last visit and unfortunately this time around- fish was very dry and the skin was very tough (assuming it had been sat under the hot lights for quite some time) and the portion of chips was extremely small.

Used to be the best fish and chips for miles..a bit disappointed.i chose haddock but it wasn'tas sweet as normal and a bit flakey which is why I avoid cod...standard has dropped but couldn't say why

Stopped today after work not locals ! We had chips and sausage in batter and curry sauce best we've ever tasted and we have sampled quite a few in our time !

Disappointing food tonight. Went in soon after opening. Friendly and helpful staff, but ... food appeared to be reheated and wasn't as hot as I expected. Nice flavours but the lack of crisp hot batter, soft chips and some cool spots rather spoilt the experience for us. Will try later in the evening next time.

Really nice classic cod fish and chips. A genuine rarity. I have to say though the chip portion for a regular cod and chips is enough for two people so worth knowing when ordering.

Terribly disappointed. First time & last time customer. All chewy batter & fish skin, chips ok & can't go wrong with mushy peas. They just robbed me of £9 + for the said mentioned meal. When did batter & fish skin become £9 ? Rip off merchants.

The chips were lovely. But the cod was awful, the fish meat was dry and the batter was chewy and like cardboard. Clearly reheated. I used to be a regular customer and always loved their fish and chips. But after tonight I won’t be going back there again.

Twyfodians will likely rave over this place but I would recommend Salt and Vinegar in Woodley. Wet batter, tasteless curry sauce and soggy chips..

Used to use this place VERY frequently but have moved away so was excited to be passing and able to buy some top fish and chips. However!!! Don't know if it has changed ownership but to say the portions have shrunk and the prices have increased would be an understatement!!! I mean £8.30 for very small cod (looked like a small chid size portion) and small chips is just ludicrous especially given that some of the batter on edges was rock hard / inedible. Only reason I've given it 2* instead of 1* is because it was very quick service as no one was in there (that should of alerted me) and the chips were ok. Much better offerings in Oxfordshire where I live now and in Dorset where I used to live they are FAR better still especially Christchurch and Weymouth.

Quality has gone downhill and it's never open as stated. Just a waste of space in the village.

Absolutely horrendous, paid over £50.00 worth of fish and chips for myself and my family as a nice treat. The chips where mushed up and greacy the fish was greacy and had bones in, cut my fiancees throat, the batter was thick and slimmy, I had what was meant to be scampi, there was nothing in the batter apart from water, we had some mushy peas, or should I say just green water, my fiancees grandparents ask for their skin on the fish to be removed and they said they couldn't do that! Everyone in the shop looked confused as to why they can't remove skin from the fish. My mother inlaw was violently sick. This is the worse fish and chips I have ever had and I shall not be returning! Very poor

Absolutely pathetic. 1st time I dropped into this chip shop. They had lost the keys and couldn't open the shop. So they took the orders around back and received my food in the car park. Went today at 13.40 pm web page said it shut at 2.00pm. wasn't open closed early. Won't be a third visit. Shambles.

Just had fish and chips from there. Best fish I've ever had no bones perfect and the chips were great to. Really pleasant staff and the shop was spotless would definitely recommend going there to anyone.

Although slightly pricier than the Chinese chip shop in Station Road the quality is well worth it! The fish is beautifully cooked (to order if you deviate from basic cod) and the chips are always fresh and not in the slightest bit greasy. There is a good range of alternatives to fish and they even have a good value children's meal deal. Top tip - The homemade tarter sauce should be compulsory!

This is such a lovely chippy. Both the fish and chips are good, but more than that the service is lovely. The lady who served me today was so friendly, polite and professional, she really made me smile.

It's not a bad chippy ... it used to be fantastic when it opened a few years, dont get me wrong still better than average it would have got 5 stars but its marginally dearer than I like to pay. Chips are always nice from here .... Yum

Greasy, undercooked fish that was grey in the middle. Bland chips swimming in grease. Avoid at all costs.

Good chips but sometimes I find the fish is holding too much oil. Fish is a little pricey but probably in line with other shops. Friendly service and parking behind the shop is easy enough.

Al Rod needs to go and get his head examined in my view - I have been going to The Fat Fish every week for 4 years and I do this because their food is bloody marvellous. Their fish is ALWAYS freshly cooked and their chips are to - as well as being of a lovely texture and taste. Try the homemade tartare sauce too - simply lovely. I travel 10 miles each week to go there and pass a number of much lesser establishments that seem to serve up any old tosh. Its the Fat Fish for me every time !
