There isn’t a ‘no dogs’ sign on the cafe door, so we went in - our dog lay quietly under the table. After ten mins, we were told by a member of staff that dogs were not allowed inside. On asking why, she didn’t know. If you have a ‘no dogs inside’ policy, please ensure a) your staff can explain why, and b) that reason withstands scrutiny. After all, it wasn’t that long ago you tolerated smoking inside! Oh, and the coffee could be better.

I cannot praise the staff here today enough. They were totally amazing and went out of their way to make our family day, and birthday celebration, so special. It really means a lot. Nothing was too much trouble, even though they found themselves short staffed. So very pleased the massive effort they made to make us feel welcome and at home. The staff were really lovely. The food is also fantastic. Thank you both so much!! You are amazing! PS we've been holding our family reunion with you for several years and will be back again next year, albeit might be a different month next time.

Sunday 11th August 2024, My husband and I met our friend from Sheffield and after visiting the craft centre, we were all in need of refreshments as it was a very hot and sunny day. We went to the Melbourne Hall Tea Room. Where we found a nice table indoors in the cool and our friend had a chocolate chip ice cream and a coke. My husband and I had ‘Posh’ strawberry milkshakes, which were made from fresh fruit, ice cream, milk and topped with whipped cream and strawberry sauce and were really scrummy. We spent a nice hour here cooling down and catching up on news and gossip as we had a lot to catch up on. After leaving here we went to visit Melbourne Hall. This is a very nice tea room with friendly staff and a nice atmosphere.

Terrible service. Have to wait outside for someone to come and say when a table will be ready. Disregarded by passing waitresses & took ages. Customer relations very poor. Once seated no-one told us we had to go up to counter to order. Once ordered took cc 35 minutes to receive 2 bowls of soup and rolls (they were good) having enquired several times of passing waitresses what was happening. "Busy witth other tables" was the answer. "Doing our best." Thenat the end had to queue another 5 minutes to pay. There's a sign behind the counter which presumably they bring out from time to time asking customers to be polite - also saying "staff have feelings too." So seemingly, poor service leading to customer complaints a regular problem. We were polite - but they need to emply more staff, train them to have better customer relations, place some menus outsdie that can be perused while waiting and improve significantly how the kitchen works and the place is managed.. . Quite spoilt the day. Beware if visiting the Hall.

Live in Shardlow so fancied a little trip out for lunch somewhere different..stumbled across this lovely little tea room..the lady who found us a cosy corner in the cafe was so welcoming, friendly and polite. We had an amazing lunch (great portion sizes!) followed by fresh scones with clotted cream (which were absolutely amazing! So light and warm!). Will definitely be going again soon! Yes it was very busy and getting a table if not dry enough to sit outside looks to be hit and miss, but whilst people seem to be complaining about that on here, what are they supposed to do if they're full? We went in with the attitude, if we can get a table great, if not then another time. If you want hot, fresh, home cooked food and amazing cakes and you're lucky enough to get a table, it'll be well worth it! Hoping to get a seat again very soon!

I was visiting my family in South Derbyshire and had come to Melbourne for a walk and a cuppa. We decided to have a light lunch option and opted for the Buck Rarebit. This was a traditional rarebit with a poached egg on top and served with a side salad. The rarebit was delicous with a hint of mustard. Very tasty and served promptly with a smile. We returned the next day for cake as we hadn't managed it previously and I had chocolate cake and my partner had bakewell blondie. We found the service on both days to be friendly and attentive, food was well presented and served fairly quickly and seemed to be well organised.

As the door sign instructed, we waited (for some while) outside (in the cold) There was a dog water bowl (upended) by the "queue here" sign, which usually indicates some degree of welcome for our 4 legged friends. When a waitress finally came we were told (although the tables inside were less than half occupied) we were not welcome inside with a dog, but we could to sit outside. It was cold and damp but we were hungry after a long walk, so we decided to sit outside. Well, the tables and chairs were filthy. We wouldn't have expected a muddy dog to be offered a place on the seating intended for humans So, we walked into town, discovering Tea at Three, where we received a very warm welcome, (as did our doggy companion), and lovely drinks and cakes I mentioned the poor experience of Melbourne Hall tea rooms to a friend who lives in Melbourne, they said "Yes, the standard has gone down"

Went there for a coffee and cake on Sunday 7 August 2022. I was approaching a table in the courtyard when two waitresses clearing the table behind me started talking to me. I turned round, stepping towards them, and promptly fell over a parasol stand. No glass of water, I had to ask for a damp cloth to clean up my injured leg, and I still had to go inside to order, where I had to wait until the waitress had stopped faffing about.

I absolutely love this tea rooms, easily one of my top go to places. I've visited alot of tea rooms in the past and this little one exceeds expectations. The level of service from all staff members is second to none, always service with a smile and adequate wait times for food and drink which leads me onto the quality of homemade food from Melbourne tea rooms. I like to think of myself a scone connoisseur and I've visited alot of places to try and find some of the best scones in Derbyshire, Melbourne tea rooms certainly provides a warm, buttery melt in the mouth scone, lash it with clotted cream and jam and its like heaven in your mouth. The tea is also wonderfully brewed and even offers decaf for people like me that can't have high doses of caffiene. The sandwiches and soups are hearty and tasty and i'd highly recommend a visit. The tea rooms itself offers a spacious place with outdoor seating and has a real good vibe to the place. If I could give this place more stars I would!Just like to add how great the service was while we battle through this pandemic, I was saddened when the tea rooms had to close but after a while MTR offered a takeaway service and we used it a couple of times because the quality was up to standard still. Thanks for keeping us in scones and sandwiches

We sat outside and waited and waited. After ten minutes we gave up and left. Sorry to other reviews that say food lovely etc but if you can’t be bothered to check who is waiting outside then your business is not geared to the customer. It was not busy inside or out. Shortly after we saw another potential customer who had also given up waiting. That’s four customers lost in ten minutes. Unlikely we will return sadly.

First, a confession. I am a bit obsessive about cheese scones. The blame for this lies with my daughter-in-law’s mother, J, who bakes a perfect cheese scone. Consequently, every NT property tea room and similar establishment that bakes and sells cheese scones that I visit has its cheese scones rated on a 1 to 10 scale that has J’s level of perfection at the very top. Suffice it to say that almost never has this near impossible target been reached. A crunchy, cheesy outside (not too hard), a fluffy inside, a clean taste without excess soda, not too dry, not bready. Rare indeed.

We had driven past Melbourne Hall on many occasions and not known what was there, apart from a lot of parked cars and people walking around. Having a Sunday afternoon with nothing in particular planned we decided to go there to see what was to be seen.Unfortunately the Hall wasn't open - closed to visitors the weekend before - but the little shops in the courtyard were very attractive and worth a mooch. As is often the case when out we decided to see what the tea room had to offer. It was a bright and sunny day so we sat outside. A large blackboard told us to sit down and wait for a waitress. Which we did, for a good 10-15 minutes and nothing happened. I decided to go into the tea rooms and what do I find? 2 young waitresses having an animated conversation, leaning against a work surface!! I asked if I could order some food - 'Of course' they replied and one of them followed me out and food was ordered and turned out to be very nice. I should point out that the sign did say that they were often busy and to be patient - and we were - but when I went into the tea room they were not that busy and we were not the only ones sitting outside, waiting to be served. The moral of this story? For the tea room owners to make sure that their staff are on the ball. I seldom have to write a review where I'm not impressed these days but business owners are missing a trick if they let standards slip. There is one caveat. I went to pay the bill - two sandwiches, a pot of tea and a cup of coffee. The menu said that the sandwiches were around £6 each so not cheap but very nice. The bill came to below £10. I did not argue!

We were here on a Saturday a few weeks ago at the gardens. We sat down on the chairs outside and waited about 10 minutes but no one came to take our order. We went inside and asked for a ploughman's platter which was on the menu. We were told that the main dishes were not available. We looked through the rest of the menu and chose sandwiches. The waitress then told us sandwiches were not available, only cakes. We chose 2 cakes and went back outside. A table near us ordered food about 10 minutes after us. Their food came out and they had sandwiches! We asked another waitress and she said we should have been able to order sandwiches. Another waitress came out and asked us if we had purchased our food and drinks at the cafe, accusing us of bringing our own items and sitting at their table and chairs. This was after she had looked at our 3 drinks in glasses and mugs, and cakes on plates. We weren't sure exactly how to answer but we clearly weren't picnicing! I've worked in cafes and would never accuse customers of this before looking at their table properly! Overall very disappointed and would never go back.

We had lunch here and was a little disappointed. The staff are lovely and the food was nice but not really value for money. I don’t mind paying more if it’s worth it but I don’t feel this is. The room was nice but the tables are quite large. No tables for two. Tables weren’t cleared very quickly either. The staff were mainly young but extremely polite and friendly also quite attentive.

A chilly day and the tea room was packed out. We did get a table and ordered sandwiches and soup. The soup was carrot, coriander and bacon - home made and delicious. I asked for it with gluten free bread which was not a problem. Pleasant staff and reasonable prices. Will visit again.

Traditional proper pub, lots of real ale choice and locals at the bar. Classic pub menu we had cottage pie & a lasagna we ordered chips but really didn’t need them as the portion size was great. It was definitely home made and veg that came with the pie was nicely cooked. Food was was about £9 per dish and beer £3.10 a pint. If I lived in the area I would go back.

This café has a lovely atmosphere and is often very busy. I like the food except that I would suggest they purchase a new toaster. We asked that the toast was not to be burnt. When the toast arrives we always find that when we turn it over it is really burnt on the other side. This has happened every time and we send it back. Not been back again for this reason.

I have visited many times in the past and it has always been excellent, but this time I could feel a definite change in the place. We had sat waiting at our table for 15 mins and no one had acknowledged us or taken an order, there seemed to be two ladies serving but for most of the time they were in the kitchen , one in particular seemed rushed and harrised. I think what was off putting was it appeared we had walked in to a creche with lots of young mums and babies. I'm not against children but crying babies and pushchairs on mass , a changing bag strewn across the floor that my friend almost fell over did not feel like the makings of a enjoyable afternoon tea. Maybe we just came at the wrong time , a sad visit as it was my friends birthday treat.

Today I visited the tea rooms with my mum, we have been to a couple over the last year including the Ritz in London. Today's afternoon tea was certainly the best, they catered for gluten free, the service was outstanding we will certainly be recommending to our friends and family . Very good value

We had friends to stay so we thought we would take them to Melbourne for the afternoon. We went to the tea rooms for lunch. I had the tuna gluten free sandwiches. There was plenty of sandwiches which came with crisps and coleslaw. Afterwards I had the lemon drizzle again as this is my favourite even though it's not gluten free (naughty me) I couldn't finish the cake because I was so full.

What a lovely visit to Melbourne Tea Rooms. Very friendly staff who went out their way to ensure we got a table as soon as possible in such a busy environment. The menu has such a great selection and I think it's lovely that they have a gluten free menu available. I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family.

Our pre-booked group of eleven enjoyed lunch at the tea rooms, prior to our guided tour of the Hall. Our orders were dealt with in a very friendly manner and all the food was served exactly as ordered! I had a lovely ham and cheese omelette, together with salad and chunky chips. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food and would be happy to visit again.

Had a lovely visit to the hall and gardens, but the tea room lets the place down. We called in at 4pm, for coffee and cake, as the cakes being served looked very nice, however, We asked about gluten free cake as my partner is gluten intolerant. We were told that none of the gluten free cakes were home made. We asked if the cakes were bought in and were told that the waitress was not sure, so we asked to see the cake available and were shown a box of Tesco lemon slices, ( which are not very nice in our opinion. ) but they are £1.80 for four, and the tea room were selling them at a cost of £2.70. which means they are making a profit of £9 on every box of cakes they sell, which is outrageous. ! It is possible to buy in perfectly good gluten free cakes from large suppliers. My partner then asked if he could have a toasted sandwich on gluten free bread and was told that they stop doing hot food at 2.30. Firstly, is is hardly a chore to make a sandwich, ( the staff member sat behind us was indeed eating a sandwich at 4pm. ! ) Why advertise the opening hours as 4.30 and stop serving food 2 hours before? The whole thing was a total debacle. I would suggest that gluten intolerant people give this place a miss, and we certainly will not be returning to a cafe that is only serving food for half of the day and ripping off people with an illness !

This is a very busy Tea Room serving excellent Light lunches and snacks. The staff seemed a little stressed but it was very busy. The food was very good and plentiful. I had welsh rarebit which was 2 slices of your choice of bread and included salad, so more than enough and very tasty. I think another member of staff was required to speed things up but perhaps our party of 26 descending on them, albeit booked and reserved, probably caused the slow response. There was a varied menu and a sign saying, No time for cake? take it home wrapped for £2. How can you resist?

7 of us went for afternoon tea for birthday celebration. Fabulous. Excellent value, good service great food and just the right amount of sandwiches, scones and cakes. We couldn't eat it all. We took our own drink which they were happy to provide glasses for and had decorated the table for us without asking or any charge. Highly recommend X

Having read reviews on Trip Advisor we thought that it would be a laugh to visit and experience the various things that have upset people. But it was a bitter disappointment, no slamming door, pleasant friendly waitresses not surly ones, prices on a par with cafes of the same standard and cheese scones that were brilliant. The consolation was that we had a very pleasant lunch in a cosy atmosphere. Ah well, better luck next time!

The sun was shining and we enjoyed sitting outside . We were quickly attended to by two cheerful waitresses. One took our order and the other made sure our table was cleared and clean. Our drinks arrived very quickly . The omelettes meals were well worth waiting for as they were obviously freshly prepared. I wish I had my camera with me. The omelettes were light and fluffy. The fillings were delicious and generous. The side salads were crisp and well presented in separate bowls plus the chips were chunky. We will definitely visit again and hope that the same chef is in the kitchen. A relaxing stop in a pretty town and a delicious meal at a reasonable price.

Arrived after a 15 mile bike ride, ready to re-fuel for the ride back. Place was closed, so we sat outside for a while googling for other places to eat nearby. Several other folk came while we were waiting, all of them expecting the place to be open. Disappointing because I'd checked on-line that they open on Mondays!

Nice place, served quickly and bar maid was friendly. Has a nice atmosphere but yet another place allowing in dogs... One in there was about the size of a horse! Think they'd have something to say if I rocked up and took my horse in there!! The place had the fusty, smell of dog... It's gross. 🤢🤮 The restaurant area was separate and I assume they don't allow dogs in there but the smell carries... Stop allowing dogs in!! Not all are small, clean and quiet. It makes your pub stink!! Not a nice environment for a chilled pint at the end of the week.

Went today to have coffee the cafe was so so busy. We have been quite a few times and never had a problem. The staff are so nice and work so hard nothing it to much trouble for them. Feel for the staff at times as people are so rude to them and shout at them. there is no need at all!! They all do their best for everyone. Give them a break!!!
