great little bakery in the centre of wirksworth, spotlessly clean, and run by a friendly elderly couple, who make everything homemade. cakes, pastries, and homemade pies, and also coffeees, teas, and cold drinks.very reasonable prices, and just up the road from Wirksworth railway station. i always pop in for treats when i catch the train up from Duffield for the afternoon, recomended..! :-)

It's run by a gentle elderly couple who seem to do all the baking too. Lots of home made savory and sweet treats to choose from. Something new they were "trying" was a minced beef and mushy peas pie. It's not flash and modern, it's an experience - give it a try.

This is a very basic tearoom that probably has not changed in decades. They do drinks, cakes, breakfast baps etc all home baked. The quality is super and the prices are very low.

So we walked into what we thought would be a nice place to have what was advitised as a ‘Full English Breakfast’ only to be served this. Mould on the toast, jelly still on the egg and everything cold. Terrible.

Quaint cafe with a large variety of cakes, biscuits, savouries, mostly homemade and all very reasonably priced. Breakfast looks a steal. All set in a ambiance reflecting a bygone age ie how cafes used to be. Service is a bit slow and haphazard, so one needs to say goodbye to any semblance of 21st century urgency and just sit back and observe. One mark off as certain negative (for this modern society) hygiene issues were observed.

Cheap as chips no frills cafe with very tasty cakes. Was a regular cycling stop, but a dozen cyclists decided not to go in having looked through the large windows at the male (owner?) sitting down merrily picking his nose and face. Really need to adopt basic good hygiene standards-no excuse.

What an interesting little cafe, tucked away on the road down to the railway. Looks just as it was back a half century ago I suspect. Cakes and savouries all home made I guess. Worth popping in just because it’s there.

The world might move too fast for comfort but May's is an oasis of dependable quality and value. Don't expect a fancy menu or leather seating. But call into May's if you're looking for home cooked food and a good range of baking to take out and enjoy.

May's is a really old fashioned little cafe just off the the main through road, beyond the town hall car park. A pot of tea and a cake here will cost little more than a cup of tea on its own in a posher cafe. The cakes are nice too; I had a "wet Nellie" - which as a Southerner I would have called a slice of bread pudding.

May's has been a Wirksworth fixture for many years. Revisiting it after a gap of several summers, my partner and I found it little changed - its cramped old-fashioned tearoom layout, its honest-to-goodness pies and pastries laid out in glass cabinets, bustling friendly service, and its generally older demographic gossiping away to one another. Quality is good, choice is fair (with one or two unusual delicacies (wet Nellie, anyone?), prices are low - but if the business model works for them, who's to complain? Our light, moist carrot cake, filling cheese and onion roll (seemingly made with pickled onion) and pot of good Earl Grey for two came to just £4.10 - the kind of money that nowadays will hardly get you a small coffee and a cookie in most High Street tax-dodging coffee corporates! There are plenty of places in Wirksworth that offer a more fashionable, cutting edge approach to snacks and light lunches but May's simply has to be experienced for what it is: simple, honest, no-nonsense and supremely affordable.

Ok- take quality bakes, good friendly service and low prices and what have you got? A little gem we think. Cakes and bakes are first class- and read what others say about prices- it is true! Do not be put off by old fashioned layout and approach- this is not s bijou eatery, but something quite rare.

Firstly can I say we stayed across the road from May's kitchen not the restaurant and May was in that kitchen from about 0430am every morning working hard and baking all the lovely goods you get in their café round the corner so full respect for Mrs May as we fondly nicknamed her - we are not stalkers I just woke up early and looked out the window! anyway we went in the café and bought some lovely cakes and they really were amazing

What a great find this place is! There was plenty of choice for snacks or main meals and the staff are very welcoming and happy to adapt to your requests. I went with my friend and our two young children and we were all made to feel at home. Two main meals for us, two lighter meals for the children along with drinks for all and we had change from a tenner! We took a quiche home to sample and I can honestly say it was one of the best I have tasted. They really do love what they do and it shows :)

The tea rooms are a very local enterprise, quirky and pleasant but rather slow and haphazard, what you get is good basic food a bit heavy on pastry but it tends to take a while: OK if you have time but we were in a bit of a hurry and it didn't really help, things also get forgotten when you order. They're very nice and they try hard but slow if you're not used to the odd pace of life which is Wirksworth

We recently stayed locally for two nights and ate at the Miner’s Arms both nights. Nic was so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious on the first night but on bonfire night, we ordered the greedy Greek platter on Nic’s recommendation and it was excellent! Delicious food, really dog friendly and very welcoming. We’ll be back!

Charming Cafe it is. The coffee is very good. The photos of table laid with cutlery and napkins and lovely decor enticed us drive out to Monsal Head where we know the views are wonderful to have a light lunch. BUT We sat at a table and although the place was empty ( very rainy outside ) the staff didn’t acknowledge us, say hello even or explain it is counter service only. If you are expecting food, think again. No meals, No sandwiches, No baked potatoes or anything substantial, just a few cakes, savoury pies and sausage rolls Most disappointing. Wasted journey. WILL NOT VISIT AGAIN. Hassop Station nearby saved the day fortunately.

We were staying close by so popped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Service was a little slow initially and they did get my own order wrong, however the manager could not have been more apologetic so first class customer service. The food was lovely when it arrived and the coffee was great also.
