Tempted by the cake and pastry selection in the window, we called in for breakfast. The beautifully prepared granola dish (£6) and bacon ciabatta roll (£4) were delicious. The servers were friendly, attentive and efficient. Given the time of day we passed on the wonderful looking cakes. The only complaint was the cold breeze emenating from the open window for take away customers.

My second visit here, the first one leaving me distinctly underwhelmed. However this visit just seemed to go better. You go to the counter to order your meal and I was offered the opportunity to pay then or later. I had a spicy bean concoction with extra bacon and an Americano with hot milk on the side. My youngest had the spicy bean dish but without the extra bacon (he doesn't like bacon !?!), and a smoothie with beetroot and blueberries in it...I know it sounds horrific, and I personally loath beetroot, but to be fair it was ok. The service was by three red haired, cheerful and effective waitresses. The chef came and went just as effectively but seemed less cheerfull !! Good food, good service, and good value.

This place is tucked off the Royal Mile, downstairs. Nice, cozy stone walls and decor. Has a narrow back balcony with seating (shared with a few other places) that overlooks Victoria Street. Very cool, and would have day out there but many folks were smoking. Food was pretty good...we had the pork chop special which was a little bland, and the seafood linguini which my teenaged daughter really liked. Very pleasant service, and would go again, but really bummed we couldn't go out back with all the smoke.

The food and coffee are nice, if very pricey. I had had nice eggs Florentine there several times, with a side of their wonderful mushrooms: two large or 3 smallish flat mushrooms each time. The next time I went, I was given a single small mushroom, for which I was charged something like £1.50, which was insulting. Also, the waitstaff are unsmiling and monosyllabic, which kills the atmosphere. It's a shame. With friendlier service and a proper portion of mushrooms, this would have been a four-star review.

This is a nice place and our brunches were good. I had eggs benedict with spinach and salmon (particularly tasty) and my friend had a full breakfast which she enjoyed. The slow service is a shame though. Just over half an hour for what we had - surely being busy for brunch on a Saturday in Stockbridge should come as no surprise...why wouldn't they plan staffing accordingly?!

I've just been to have lunch at Cowan and sons. Had soup which was lovely . I've ordered some carrot cake and got the end of the cake, the crust! It was hard and not soft at all!! If I had a restaurant or coffee shop I'll never serve that! It's like having the dry crust of bread and almost stale tasting. I did not want to say anything as the waitress was not friendly at all. I ordered tea as well and every other tea and coffee that came out had a small piece of chocolate biscuit on the side. Mine did not. Slightly disappointing. 6 warm drinks served after me and every saucer had the bit of chocolate on the side. Very disappointing, Not so much the soup but the attention to detail. The waitress did not ask me how my meal was after I'd finished and paid. I think with prices like theirs the Cust service not so good and like I said attention to detail and a smile makes a tired stress mummy very happy. I very rarely write bad reviews but I just felt in this instance I should.

Sad to see this place change. They have gone for the 'hipster/so cool we can charge what we think' approach to even coffees and soup. Not especially clean water carafes or glasses. Skip it. Cafe Plum or Costa across the road are much better for value and service.

Slightly eclectic place in Stockbridge Main Street. Serves nice soul food style breakfast items. My fave is a take on eggs benedict, wither the poached egg and hollandaise sauce served over black pudding or haggis. Sourdough style toast on the base and some rocket salad garnish. I like the food. I agree about the service. It's counter service and although food is delivered to the table, it's not exactly friendly service alas. Maybe that's the quirky image that they are after.

Maxis has now been rebranded and looks lovely from the outside but the inside was disappointing. It was very busy so service was slow but they did warn us of this and they were friendly. My bacon had been around for while so was hard to cut. But my main issue was with the position of the cakes. I was facing the counter and quickly realised that the cakes were displayed on open plates on quite a high counter which meant customers had to lean over the counter to pay i.e. over the cakes. Surely that can't be right? To see sleeves hover inches from the cakes, not to mention moneyed hands and people speaking, sneezing and coughing over the cakes. Then someone came in with a dog held at chest height and stood there to order. To be fair I didn't see the dog touch the cakes, but still........ I also wasn't happy about the cutlery being dropped in a jug almost the same size as the cutlery so it had to be fished out by the customer. I don't know how many hands had been in there before. So, I won't be back till the above has been remedied. There are lots of places in Stockbridge which pay more attention to detail and keep their cakes covered and have a better way of serving cutlery. A bit of cling film would work.....

Right, so from the outside this cafe doesn't look like much, but inside the cafe is cosy and quaint. Breakfast was so good we went back the next day. We had a late lunch at Maxi's after landing in Scotland. The grilled cheese was pure perfection - order it with the chutney, you won't be sorry. The service was really slow - but it was the very rude and unhelpful waitress that has put us off coming back. We were the first table in and it took almost an hour for our complex order of 'avocado on toast' to arrive. Whilst we were waiting, other tables arrived and all got their food before us. Thinking our order had maybe been forgotten about we asked the waitress if everything was fine, to which she snapped back that she just works at the front. We have since told friends about the experience because her attitude was so bad it was almost entertaining - and it turns out many of them have also had the misfortune of that rude waitress too on their visits.

We went to the Stockbridge Market on Sunday (it was very small and very crowded!). We were interested in eating a little lunch for not to crazy about lining up for 30 minutes and eating something while standing. We wandered into Maxi's and it was lovely. They were a bit busy, so they asked us to order from the counter, which we did. My mother and I had the full breakfast with blood sausage (I just had to try it and it was pretty good!). My sister had a hummus wrap and soup and both were lovely. While probably not a destination restaurant, it was a pretty reasonably priced and hearty lunch. In fact, it was one of the best lunches we had in Edinburgh and the space has great character. Our lunch came out to 31 pounds for the 3 of us, including tax and tip.

We stopped in here for lunch on a cold winter's day. Six of us, spread either side along a long table. A number of us had the soup of the day - a hearty tomato soup with oatcakes on the side. I and my daughter plumped for a sour dough cheese toastie each, with fig chutney - delicious! My son had a chicken salad, again very good. The tables are set quite closely together, but it felt snug rather than cramped. The decor is fairly rustic, and bathroom facilities are basic. Have been here for coffee and lunch several times and have yet to find fault. It seems to get very busy especially at weekends and rightly so as everything about Maxis is quality. Prices seem fair for the location and quality of what is on offer and the ambience is pleasant. On one of my three visits it was buzzing with families and the food took a while to arrive but it was worth waiting for. Particularly recommend: the soups and the cheese toastie - best I've ever tasted and I have had a lot of toasties. Went here for a late breakfast lunch, and have been before, about 6 months ago. Full scottish was very tasty, good sized portion, but the service was quite poor. They appear to be a bit chaotic, the staff don't appear to know what their priorities. We sat down at a table which still had used dishes on it, as did the empty table next to us. After about 5 minutes, the table next to us, still empty, was cleared and cleaned, whilst ours wasn't. Until we finally had to ask for it to be cleared. Most o the staff seem to be quite friendly, but there are also a couple who give the impression that customers are a bit of an inconvenience! You order at the service desk which was fine with us both going for the poached eggs and local bowers sausages. The food came in very good time given how busy the place was with quite a few big tables in for lunch. My poached eggs were cooked to perfection for me - soft and runny. Really liked the flavour of the coffee too. My only criticism was the price. At over £11 with my coffee - I thought it bit too expensive for breakfast...To add bacon and a poached egg to my smashed avocado on delicious sourdough bread was £4. We'd spotted this place the previous evening when we arrived and thought it looked like a nice place for breakfast. It's clearly popular and there were a few people already seated when we arrived, so we expected a bit of a wait. But after nearly an hour - even though there was still one table who'd been there longer than us - I asked, and the guy said he'd forgotten to put in our order. He was very apologetic and did get it out within 10 minutes (and gave us some more tea) but it honestly didn't appear that our wait was anything particularly unusual. When it came the food was very good, no complaints, but we had quite a long time to observe the way they ran the service and it was glacially slow. TBH it was rather a waste of a holiday morning so I don't think we'd go again.

I understand that I visited at a busy time (Saturday lunch/brunch) and I get the unhurried, slow food thing, but I still think that 45 minutes to make a sandwich is absolutely ridiculous. Especially when two of the staff seemed to be spending a lot more time chatting behind the counter than helping their colleagues or their customers. My sandwich was tasty enough, but not worth the wait or the £6 price tag. My drink was good (Hoodoo by Roots Soda), but then it isn't Maxi's that makes it and it's available - for a lower price - at other cafés too. There are plenty of other coffee/lunch options in the area, so don't bother wasting your time on this one.

Ate here twice on our recent weekend break - fantastic scrambled eggs and good service. Plenty of room and the other food looked appetising - will try lunch next time!

Maxi's has been in Stockbridge for years and never fails to provide tasty food, with lively cakes and coffee. Great choice on the menu and good prices. I';m not sure about the new decor of revealed brick walls but it's the food and coffee that counts and it's good.

We had the French toast with maple syrup and bacon. As usual, it was delicious. Three of this course, plus two teas and a cappuccino, came to £25. The decor is quirky (ugly in spots) but the café has a good atmosphere and the food is good quality.

Called in last week for lunch with my wife. We were early and had no trouble getting a table but it filled up quite quickly thereafter. My chicken caesar salad was excellent. Fresh crisp greens with very good quality lardons and slices of proper roast chicken and a very nice punchy dressing (may or my not have been homemade). My wife ordered oatcakes and hummus. Great homemade oatcakes but really bland and I suspect homemade hummus. Poor texture (claggy rather than creamy) and no flavour of anything other than olive oil and chickpeas. There is no single right way of making hummus but flavour is essential be it tahini, lemon, garlic, chilli, sumac etc etc. In this case nothing - suspect not even some salt and pepper! Nice ambience and pleasant service.

Had never visited Maxi’s until now but it always appears busy which is usually a good sign. However, I’m afraid that this was a pretty underwhelming visit.Firstly, as other people have noted, the café is quite tight on space which isn’t helped by the decision to have several large tables in the middle of the room. I can’t see how anyone with a wheelchair or pram could fit in here on a busy day and constantly having people brush past you is a frustrating experience.Menu wise, Maxi’s is going for the Hipster vibe but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. And in terms of product, our scones were lovely and couldn’t be faulted hence the rating. However, where we felt really let down was the customer service. Nothing majorly wrong but the staff manning the till seemed too preoccupied on making coffee and didn’t acknowledge anyone coming in – so we were left to find menus ourselves and to figure out that we should order at the counter. And it took 15 minutes for them to serve said Scones….Would we go back? Maybe but we’d likely try other Stockbridge cafes first.

Came here recently for brunch - the staff are friendly. The french toast is very yummy and generous maple syrup portions! Only criticism is that the tables are too close together and there isn't much room to get to the bar which isn't ideal when it isn't table service...

We popped in here for a light bite to eat to see full tables and it's easy to see why! For a start, there isn't a great deal of seating anyway but it really is a smashing little place! There isn't a huge selection on the menu; breakfast, sandwiches, soup and cakes was pretty much the lot, but what we had was absolutely spot on. The leek and new potato soup was beautiful as was the homemade scones (which were huge!) The price of the food was very reasonable. Coffee was good, too. Kid friendly. Staff lovely, but a bit slow. Very quirky decor wise; it's shabby but in a good way! Well worth a visit if you are in stockbridge.

We got off the red eye and were too early to check into our hotel, so went for a walk in search of breakfast and found this lovely cafe. Breakfast, tea and cakes were delicious and a great price. I wish we had the opportunity to go back and will make sure I do next time I visit!

I simply love Maxis it's my favourite cafe in Edinburgh, the prices are reasonable and the food is great. The deluxe hot chocolate is absolutely amazing, only moan is that it's not big enough and sometimes there is no tables and a long wait is required, unfortunately they do not accept reservations and so you just have to wait awkwardly until a table is available however, over all it is a great place.

Popped into Maxi's today for a coffee. My friend ordered a bacon roll and a cup of tea. The girl then came back to us and said there was no rolls left would a bagel be ok...yes my friend said. As we waited on the bagel with bacon, his tea was delivered before this..getting colder. But to top it off the bacon on the bagel seemed hours old and the bagel wasn't even heated/toasted! Massive disappointment. Staff were pleasant enough but my friends face said it all while eating the bagel. The simple things in life can make happy customers....

Visited Maxi's yesterday with a friend for breakfast at 10 am. We both wanted scones and where told that they hadn't started baking the scones yet. Seeing as scones are on their breakfast menu, It was just disappointing. Generally not a great experience.

I come to Edinburgh one or twice per month, generally on Saturday.I often come here, at the "Maxi's" in Stockbridge, for a full breakfast. The mix of eggs, sausages, bacon, and so on is well cooked, served in large portions. Never disappointed ... just a great start to the day.The place is small; most of the tables are big enough for groups, so if you are alone be prepared to share.Overall, good service.I recommend it.

I had a lovely courgette soup on Sunday. I've been past a few times but never managed to get a seat before. This Sunday was nice and quiet, just a few folks in, mostly older couples. It's a bit difficult if you're on your own to not feel conspicuous as the tables are quite large. All in all a good soup with a calm atmosphere!

This cafe/restaurant never disappoints on a Saturday lunchtime. So what if you've to share a table.Today the toddlers were all well catered for and well behaved. The diners were a mixed bunch of teens, tourists, couples, families and oldies like myself. It's a happy place and the mix match of tables and chairs plus the old tiles decor doesn't detractFor less than 4 pounds I enjoyed a huge plate of broccoli and stilton soup with granary bread and butter served by a cheery waitress.

My partner and I are often down in Stockbridge, however, had never tried Maxi's before as it always seems to be packed. This we took as a good sign, so when we spotted a space last week (Saturday 31st May) we grabbed it. Now, i say there was space - the place was still packed, uncomfortably so. The interior has been furnished with several large tables, which i appreciate fits in with their laid back mish-mash approach to decor, however, this also meant that there was barely space to move in the cafe, particularly when you then add buggies/prams and coats etc on back of chairs. Perhaps the owners should consider several smaller tables that could then be combined for larger parties? We managed to get to the back of the restaurant where there were three staff behind the counter. No-one acknowledged us so we took that as a sign to find our own seats. We squeezed (literally) onto a large table (6 seater) at the very back of the restaurant before realising that the lack of acknowledgement probably meant we also order at the counter....My partner squeezed back out and ordered two coffees, a juice and a slice of brownie each. The brownies came first and were slid across the long table to us as not even the staff could get in between the tables! Next came the juice, again slid across the table. Whilst waiting on our coffees another couple came in and sat at the end of the table we were on. Coffees arrived, offered to the couple that had just sat down (doh!) before we explained they would probably be ours. The first coffee was passed along via the couple that had sat down, the second delivered to the other side of the table and handed over to my partner by a member of staff who had to lean over a baby in a high chair to do so (hot liquids, small baby, no space....health and safety?!)The brownies were delicious as was the coffee - so in terms of their product the cafe delivered (hence the three stars).During our visited we also witnessed an elderly man, pushing his partner in a wheelchair trying to enter the property. Three members of staff stood behind the counter. The first one noticed the man, whispered to another member of staff who then looked up, before the third also looked toward the door. They could see the man was clearly struggling - so much so that a man sitting by the door stood up to help him. At no point did they bother to go over and explain that at the moment there was no space to save him the unnecessary stress, instead he came in, stood for a couple of minutes looking around, before then struggling back out with the wheelchair. I was already having a pretty miserable experience, but after witnessing this quickly finished my coffee and suggested to my partner that we leave.....which we then had to disrupt the couple along from us to do due to the large table and bench seating against the wall. If you are planning on visiting, I wouldn't suggest you do so on the weekend if you are elderly/infirm, a wheelchair user or need to take your pram inside with you. If you do have a small child, i'd also have a peep through the window to see if there are any others in at the same time should a high chair be required. Another couple and their baby came in with a pram and were told, when they asked, that there were only two high chairs available and that these were being used. I was absolutely appauled by the lack of customer service I witnessed. Yes, the restaurant was busy but I saw one smile from a staff member during my entire visit and the complete disregard for the needs of the elderly man during our visit just topped it all off. If we returned, it would be a weekday mid-morning/afternoon, however with so many other places in Stockbridge where we have received excellent customer care as well as fab food and drink, it's unlikely we will bother.

I have never been that impressed with Maxi's but decided to give it another chance since we haven't been in for a long time. The place looks like it's in the middle of being renovated or they are going for a seriously distressed look on the walls. It was Saturday lunchtime and the staff was clearly not coping; service was slow, coffee terrible and food poor. Not coming back.

At 3pm on a wonderful day after visiting Edinburgh Zoo - two very happy hungry people sat down in Maxi's for lunch. I went to order food - Sweet potato/ chilli & cocoanut- soup x 2, special hot chocolates to follow. Eagerly waiting for our lunch and so hungry I could if eaten the scone on the table next to me, we patiently waited. Hot drinks came out to numerous tables and as the time past, the mood between us dropped - we were not laughing and being joyful anymore - just as we decided to approach the counter - 30 minutes after ordering something that would need 3 minutes in a microwave - the miserable male assistant behind the counter looked up - he acknowledge us! Food yeh please - BUTHe then looked like he was preparing drinks - oh No I was not a happy bunny - as I looked at my partner we said surely not - oh yes he brought over HOT CHOCOLATE!!!!!!My partner approached the counter to explain - the moody dude - said ! What no soup! - he said yeh we are still waiting - 40 minutes!!!The counter guy - said sorry we have been busy !!! Not good enough - there are about 10 tables in there ! We demanded our money back & said we would never return! So if you want a quick snack and good service - go somewhere else! Stockbridge Edinburgh!

Having sung the praises of Stockbridge and its multitude of cafes to my visiting partner, I decided on Maxi’s based on previous good experiences. Bad choice, having a grumpy waiter answer my questions on soup of the day, with no words just pointing, and table service, a monosyllabic grunt, warning bells should have been ringing loudly in both ears. We ordered soup and its famous Hot Chocolate, with the Hot Chocolate to follow eagerly anticipated soup. It was reasonably busy but minimum staff seemed to be only focussing on the hot drinks. Thinking let's be nice we chatted on while thinking more and more Soup can't take this long. 30 minutes later, we caught the waiters eyes he nodded with an apologetic look, Tina said I bet he brings the Hot Chocolate now, I said no way can they not notice no soup and cutlery untouched. He brought the Hot Chocolates, as tasty as they looked I pointed out no soup, he looked as if I was crazy and just repeated. Enough was enough, a full refund was demanded, and provided, with the only excuse being they were busy, which by now was no means true, with little interest in actually discussing. We left disconsolate and starving, and late. Vowing never to return, sad to see another good venue ruined by poor service

Didn’t have half the cocktails in stock, messed our orders up waited 50 minutes for our drinks, ordered a pina colada and when telling the staff member that we thought something was off with the drink, the immediate response was ‘well you’ve been drinking it still’. Rude staff and don’t recommend, not worth the money for the price you pay!
