Maxis Restaurant in York

We had the Dim Sum menu. The staff were fabulous in helping us make our choices. The food was amazing and would highly recommend if you want to try something different. Plenty of choice. Food was beautifully prepared. We enjoyed everything we tried.

Fabulous service . We were welcomed and helped with our food selection. The food arrived as a variety of dishes. Each beautifully presented and delicious . They really cared that we had enjoyed our experience . A very special place. On learning of a birthday in our group they played happy birthday and came with ice cream for us all and a birthday candle. Magic experience.

Personally, I won’t come back again not because of the food, but because the way you treated me and my partner today. I’ve never felt so rushed or unwelcome in any place. Being told how to order dim sum on your menu I felt insulted when I’ve done it many times before. “You should put a 1 in the box rather than mark it with an ‘X’. Who do you think you’re talking too? I’m a guest. I’ve been here many times before, but today, as said I’ve never felt so unwelcome

On my third order of a takeaway for a Satay Tofu with added mixed vegetables I was given a £24 bill and presented with two separate dishes. The concierge with grey hair proceeded to shout at me in a “telling off” manner and said I had ordered it wrong and it was my fault for not ordering vegetable satay with added tofu instead of satay tofu with added vegetables. He was raising his voice speaking to me in an aggressive and condescending manner that is just not acceptable from service staff. He is not the owner and even if he was this would be an unacceptable way to speak to a customer. I eventually got the satay tofu but without mixed vegetables added as requested for £16 along with vermicelli but not what I ordered as I got Singapore vermicelli rather than plain. The concierge was who I dealt with on the phone and knew full well what I was trying to order and it was correct the first two weeks I ordered but to be pedantic he messed up the order on purpose to make a point because O didn’t order it I the way he wanted. The food quality is reasonable but not good or excellent and expensive for the quality. Unfortunately my usual restaurant is closed for 6 weeks during Chinese new year. I will look for another alternative due to the nastiness of the concierge. His behaviour is appalling!

We ordered 14 various dim sum to share between 4 of us. The food was okay, some were bland. Doesn't have that "Hong Kong" flavour and is a bit on the expensive side. We went during lunch hour and there were about 10 tables of mature "English" diners, which is busy, considering today's economic climate, so Maxi must be doing something right.

My daughter booked this for my wife,s birthday as she loves dim Sum, there were 11 of us. The service was excellent, friendly ( and very good with the young children ) efficient and helpful. The food was outstanding as good as in top London restaurant or Hong Kong, we really enjoyed it and a little surprised at how good it was. The decor was also very detailed and nicely done. Definitely a must go to place.

Another 5 Star review for Maxis … celebrated my Mam’s 90th Birthday there in August and had a great day, returned again today for a Christmas Family get together, and found the same caring and friendly service and fantastic food. Duck in ginger. The small duck pieces were very dry and had the fatty skin on. The sauce was salty and l only tasted one piece of ginger. Would not choose again.

Have been quiet a few time over the year but recently we went and I feel that things have changed and they maybe be cutting corners. Useually I have chicken , chilly and black bean sauce but this time it was bulked up with onions and the black bean sauce was very watery with a different taste to what I’m used to. Going to pay I was disappointed with the cost it has gone up by more £10 to the total bill from our last visit.

Tasteless, low quality food. Most dishes were bulked up by huge amounts of chopped onion. The satay sauce had never seen a peanut. The only discernable flavour was from chilli powder in the Szechuan chicken. The prices for this awful food are outrageous. Will never return and I don't recommend it to anyone. And what's going on in this business? On a Tuesday night there must have been more than 15 staff just hanging around. Weird, and made us feel uncomfortable.

If there's a better Chinese Restaurant I don't know of it ! Maxis is amazing - The atmosphere, the lovely friendly staff and most of all THE FOOD !! My wife and I had the Special Lunch for just under £13 each. I had Veg hot and sour soup followed by beef curry with boiled rice. My wife had chicken in blackbean sauce with egg rice all followed by chinese tea. 10 out of 10 for everything and it won't be long before we go back :)

(Take Away) Not good at all. Chips tasted reheated and cardboard-like and looked grey. The chicken was tough and over-cooked. It was the first time I had tried the food here off the back of a recommendation and I can honestly say there are much much better places at half the cost. The food here just isn't worth the money. A real disappointment.

It's been a long time since we ate here - but it won't be long before we're there again - it's fantastic ! We had the set lunch accompanied by a couple of Cobras. Our family visited this restaurant for years and the quality of food and service of staff was always pretty good. We haven't visited for a while and thought we'd go back once again as we knew it would be a enjoyable visit. However, this time it was different and it was apparent as soon as we stepped into the restaurant. The restaurant was almost empty with one customer. The staff has all changed with Eastern European waiters full of tattoos serving at front of house who spoke little English. We were sat down after wondering at the front of the reception for a good 5 minutes where staff were walking about and not acknowledging us. When they finally acknowledged us, it was difficult to understand what they were saying and they didn't really understand us either. When we were sat down and settled and ready to order there was no staff about. We had to wave down the waiter when he came out of the kitchen.Obviously at this point we thought this was no longer the restaurant we once knew. The food arrived which was dim sum we always ordered. It was a disappointment as the food was dry and it seemed like they cut down on portions since what you get is much smaller. I'm guessing they must have changed the people inside the kitchen too? Some form of cost cutting... Overall the quality and taste of food was just bad.When it was time to pay after this awful visit, service charge was added onto our bill which wasn't there before. We thought they didn't offer us any decent service as the waiters did not show any sign of friendliness or initiative when serving us so we asked the waiter to take the service charge off which is completely legal in the UK. They started raising their voices at us and said we must pay it. It was embarrassing for us at this point even though we are completely entitled for the service charge to be taken off. I've never felt so humiliated at a restaurant in my life. We just paid the service charge and left.From this visit we know we won't be visiting this restaurant again. The management of the restaurant has changed and it looks like they have taken a step backwards which is evident in the business they have now. Rude staff or bad food alone is enough for us to never return. Extremely disappointing. I'm sure they won't be here for long unless they change their ways. VERY RUDE

We were near York and decided to try this branch as we used to go to the Leeds one before it shut.The interior is very traditional Chinese restaurant style and puts you in the Far East. The staff at this branch were far nicer and polite than the Leeds branch used to be. As much as we liked the Leeds one it was always a joke of how rude the staff were. Not here, everyone was very friendly.We had the dim sum menu and it had a good mix and quality was better than we remembered in the Leeds branch. All very nice traditional dim sum. We would visit again if in the area but I probably wouldn’t drive there from Leeds.It was also disappointing to see a small group of female students (I think they were Japanese) causing a fuss and trying everything they could to bring their food bill down. They started by demanding student discount which wasn’t available. They then wanted the drinks free in leu of no student discount. They finally made a big fuss about the service charge, it was shameful. Well don’t to the staff who remained polite but firm with these free loaders.

Another fabulous lunch at Maxis we visit at least twice a month for lunch great value at £9 for two courses each and tea or coffee. Not mini portions either!Lots of choice too and a veggie option .. and a dim sun menu too..The staff are very helpful and attentive.The only negative i will say is you must clean up outside in the car park there is litter everywhere!( and its been there ages)Its not a good look for new customers! A couple of litter grabbers gloves and a bin bag will soon get it sorted.We KNOW the place and food are brilliant as are regulars .. but first impressions really do matter..

Fuimos el domingo por la noche con nuestra familia 6 de nosotros en total, regalo de cumpleaños para mi esposo. Personal muy atento, menú masivo. Optamos por la comida especial para dos, mi hijo y su familia tenían diferentes entrantes, platos principales y postres. Toda nuestra comida estaba deliciosa. Lo más destacado para mí fue la tostada de gambas, ¡es para morirse! Normalmente no me gustan las tostadas de gambas, pero Dios mío, esto estaba en un nivel diferente. Gruesa capa de gambas picadas delicioso! Las costillas también eran fantásticas. Todos disfrutamos mucho nuestra comida y definitivamente volveremos a comer aquí de nuevo.

Went here today for lunch, both of us had ribs and sweet and sour chicken with fried rice,I will go as far as to say it’s the best sweet and sour for yrs. Was impressed definitely on the up again.

We have been going to Maxis for over 15 years and have come to love it as one of our favourite Chinese restaurants. BUT, it has steadily gone down over the past 6 months to a year and Christmas Eve was the last time we will eat there. In November we booked a table for two for Christmas and were advised to put down a deposit of £20 and for that we would receive a 10% discount on the night. So my first complaint is that they refused to honour the discount saying that only applies to Christmas special dinner but we had Maxis special banquet (the most expensive meal on the menu)The food was not good, soup OK. Mixed starter OK but without the usual nice little touches of sea weed garnish etc. The crispy duck was dry. The main course was chicken (tasteless) prawns in chillies (so so) sizzling beef ( sweet and huge great lumps of meat) All in all a big disappointment.

Habiendo ido a Maxis Leeds, todos los sábados durante los últimos 10 años hasta que cerró, condujimos 60 millas hasta el restaurante en York desde Durham. ¡Este restaurante abre a las 12: 00 del mediodía, a las 12: 05 todavía estábamos parados afuera y tuvimos que llamarlos para abrir la puerta! Un desaliñado europeo oriental abrió la puerta con agujeros en sus jeans, no nos reconoció, así que entramos, no había nadie allí para mostrarnos una mesa. Otro hombre chino desaliñado nos gritó de vuelta al bar y dijo que uno de sus empleados debía llevarnos a una mesa. Por cierto, el personal de Leeds fue muy inteligente y educado. Salimos y condujimos 60 millas de regreso a Durham. Gente horrible, grosera y desaliñada. ¿El consorcio de hombres de negocios sabe cómo se gestiona este lugar? ¿No lo creo?

Went here for a meal with family and I can’t recommend the place enough. Great staff, good prices and the food is delicious. We had sweet and sour chicken, lemon chicken and beef in oyster sauce. One of the best Chinese meals we’ve had, will definitely be back.

We stayed at the nearby Premiere inn and tried Maxi's on the offchance - and were so glad we did. The venue is lovely, we sat on a pagoda styled stage, and had a fabulous night. The staff were extremely friendly, polite and helpful... and the food was absolutely delicious! If we lived in York we would definitely dine here again ( and again)

We visited for dinner on a quiet evening, service was very good and friendly. The decor is interesting, the big fish tank attracted attention, the fish were nice but had no weed or stimulation so looked quite bored. The menu had a good range including a whole section for vegetarians and my chow mein was delicious. My partner had a sizzle meal which was good and my son enjoyed his sweet and sour chicken although as someone else said, the chicken in a fried rice dish had an odd texture as if pre-cooked. Overall very tasty and a reasonable price.

Visited Maxis on a Sunday evening whilst we were staying in York for the weekend.

Quiet when we arrived Sunday evening , large dining area , meal was ok but have had much better Chinese meals, service was quick and staff were friendly but the place lacked atmosphere

9 family visited tonight the service was the worse I have had. drinks were ordered beer was spilt all over my trouser leg not just a splash. When collecting used plates these were dropped on the floor sauces all over. And the food was very mediocre. We wonr be visiting again stay çlear

Dined here and had the special for 4 persons. It was very disappointing. There were five main dishes and the choice was good but the food was bland and tasteless. Not up to the usual standard for chinese food. Didn't like the fact that we had to eat out of small rice bowls too - would much prefer a plate. Service was OK with some staff being good and others not very responsive. Won't be visiting again which is a shame because this had a good reputation previously.

We have been here at least 6 times over the years. Every time it’s been excellent. The dim sum is so like bring in Hong Kong. In fact the whole setting is. Well done for keeping the standard over the years.
