Mascalzone in Newcastle upon Tyne

Great service from the moment we entered until we left. Perfect pizza - thin and crispy and amazing garlic bread. We only had lasagne but these were all awesome. Proper Italian lasagne made with fresh pasta and lots of layers. To quote an Italian chef on lasagne; “It’s a celebration of pasta, not sauce” this was just that, I only have praise. We were in Newcastle for the weekend and went here on a Saturday evening, if it was open in the Sunday we’d be going again.

Excellent lunchtime meal with friends. Will certainly be back.

Love it. Classic food with a great menu. Not your 10 a penny pizza pasta joint. The waiting staff don't always appear to know how to pronounce a lot of Italian dishes but were lovely all the same.

Has been my favorite restaurant for 10 years and never disappoints. Love that they still change up the specials so I always have something new to try. But thankfully they keep the classics.

A very cute and picturesque restaurant in the Sandyford/Jesmond area. Excellent service and excellent food. Arrive early as this restaurant is very popular and it gets very crowded as a result. It also seems to have a loyal clientele. Very recommended!

Visited here with family and friends to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary. The service was brilliant with really friendly staff and the food was delicious. Looking forward to our next visit.

Fabulous venue and as always friendly and professional staff. It was our anniversary and we have always alway treated Mascelzone as our go to Italian restaurant. The prices are good and the food excellent. We will be back hopefully soon.

We were recommended this place and having visited can see why. The food is all freshly prepared and is great value. We had a garlic bread with cheese and roasted aubergine as starters; both were lovely. For mains we had penne con pollo, pollo mare and spigola - all were delightful. We had the house white and that is very drinkable and good value. Booking is recommended as there are two sittings and it is a popular place.

A brilliant little place, would absolutely recommend to everyone and I would come here again. The pizza was delicious, the service good but not too much, and the restaurant itself was in a lovely understated area of town. Perfect!

We visited on 10/8/2024 after making a booking online a few weeks ago. This used to be one of our go to places before I was struck down with some serious health issues, I am now getting these under control so I was eager to get back for the wonderful food, we were sat in the older part of the restaurant which is just where we like to be, after saying our hello's to the wonderful owners it was down to the ordering off the menu, we decided to skip the starter and went straight for the mains, my wife had the trio of fish with a portion of chip (which she is still raving about) and a garlic & cheese bread, I had the Seafood Linguine which simply blows my mind, the tastes are off the scale, this was all washed down with a nice bottle of Primitivo, I also felt I just had enough space for the Chocolate orange cake which is a must if you visit this place, all in all an absolute wonderful night. Thanks to Ian, Alan and the rest of the staff for a wonderful evening. Still serving the best food around for miles, we will be back soon. David & Barbara

Simple Italian restaurant. Really good food. Best steak in Newcastle.

Group of 6 of us finally got to use our Christmas gift . We certainly were not disappointed, our food was absolutely gorgeous, and the staff so friendly. Many thanks for a lovely evening.

As always a brilliant meal and service

Not only the bread was old, and the food is was very poor, but we actually got food poisoning from the scallops and prawn tortellini from the specials menu. We know it was this dish as we were a group of 4 guest and only the 2 who ate this tortellini got sick. We rang the restaurant to inform about this and the guy on the phone said that after speaking to the owner, he said that the way go forward with this, would be to go to a doctor and get blood samples to prove it was from their restaurant. And that was their response to our call. After knowing that we had dinner on Saturday and the restaurant closes on Sundays and Mondays, so couldn't speak to them until Tuesday. Also by accident (bless the girl who was lovely) they dropped a glass of wine over one of us, and management didn't even take that glass of wine off the bill.

We did an early evening walk-in. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was plentiful, well presented and delicious. Recommended

Me and my friends have gone to this place many times. The first time I went to this place, I loved the pasta but the last few times since I've been here the food has been a huge hit or miss for me. My partner really likes the sausage pasta, but I feel the pasta dish that I like to have is not worth it here at all and my partner can make a better dish than that at home.

This restaurant has been a go-to location when we have found outselves in Newcastle. My son went to Uni and has stayed and married there, hence our visits. The restaurant style is interesting, matching the isles of Lewis and Sardinia - both are beautiful but very different islands. Their success has been well earned and the tasteful expansion shows how good they are. The service is exemplerary. It really does put top level London restaurants to shame. I would have loved lemon sorbet to be on the pudding menu - it was not there - but the pudding menu is great. I couldn't have felt more at home!

The Pizza dish with pasta and clams is one of the best italian combo dishes I have ever eaten!

Okay, so Mascalzone will not win you over with authentic music (instead 80's power ballads & greatest hits of the 70's predominate); its decor (particularly the pictures on the wall which have no apparent connection to the cuisine or even each other); or even its service (which favours the brisk & efficient over the warm & personal). But despite this, I have no hesitation in making this a five star review. Why? Because the food, lovingly & attentively prepared in the ground floor open kitchen adjacent to our table, was absolutely superb. Flavours that leapt out of the lovely plates generously conveying the pizza, risotto & pasta dishes that we demolished. Drinks (including a reasonably priced wine list) & desserts were on point too but it's those starters & mains that I'll be thinking of most right up until I next have the pleasure of visiting which will be very soon. I have highly-rated Italian restaurants on my doorstep but will happily make the journey from Tynemouth to Sandyford to experience the hardworking delights of Mascalzone. Three VERY happy diners who truly appreciated the team's efforts to give us a wonderful night to celebrate my daughter's first professional contract. Thank you & see you soon.

This place is a hidden gem! The food is amazing: fresh, tasty, full of flavour and good sized portions. Staff are very friendly and always smiling. Nothing seems too much for them to do. It's a cozy little place but has the most homely atmosphere.

I love this restaurant so much that I could live on their food and nothing else. The atmosphere is absolutely wonderful, the food quality is amazing and the plating is stunning. I have to recommend this place as one of the best Italian restaurants in Newcastle 100%.

Brilliant little corner shop bistro no airs or graces just great food and a welcome the staff were very professional. We were treated properly with respect and were given the menus the watchful staff very courteous and unobtrusive. The food was very Italian but not pretentious just proper good food. We were sat next to kitchen as the food was prepared, I found that to be a bonus I like to see chefs at work and they occasionally smiled to see if we were enjoying our meals. This has been a breath of fresh air compared to recent food outings! Well done to the manager and staff.

Called in on spur of the moment for early evening dinner. Very friendly staff, seated straight away near kitchen area. Great to see the chefs at work! Food was really tasty - I had penne con pollo. We were a party of 3 and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Everything was beautifully cooked. Service was fast, friendly and efficient- without feeling rushed in any way.The tiramisu was the equal of anywhere. As other people mention, the parking is difficult - but this place is worth a bit of a walk. I'd recommend reserving. The pricing makes this place excellent value for money.

Mascalzone is my favourite Italian restaurant ever, it truly is a neighbourhood gem! All the food is incredible and great value considering the amazing quality, I cannot speak highly enough of the lobster & crab ravioli which is one of the best raviolis I've ever had in my life. Service is great and staff go above and beyond, special thanks to Sabina & co for making my mum's belated birthday so special - really such a great restaurant. Also, considering they are a seafood restaurant, the seafood is always SO fresh regardless of what time of year it is, which is fantastic. Thank you :)

Came here with my family for my brother's 50th. I can only echo the sentiments shared about the wonderful food and service but we also loved the great tunes! Appreciate that shouldn't affect ratings but it certainly gets a thumbs up from this old 80's kid. Back to the food though - had the meatball starter which was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. For a main, I had a Piccante pizza which was equally wonderful. Service achieved that perfect blend of being swift yet laid back and everyone said a cheery goodbye to us when we left. Whole-heartedly recommend this wonderful restaurant and will definitely be back!

Popped in for an afternoon of lunch with some good friends, and we enjoyed some splendid food, particularly the steak and chips and the monk fish Housewives very good and the puddings are excellent, particularly when accompanied by a glass of desert wine I very much look forward to my next visit. This is the best Italian cuisine I had in Newcastle, authentic and delicious. Ordered seafood linguine and really enjoyed. The flavour was spot on, the only downside for me was one or two clams tasted a bit sand, it was really difficult to fully clean the sand though. Compared the ones I had in the past, it was really good. The garlic bread was top notch too with great size. Family had lasagnas and they said it was lovely as well.

My spicy pizza was lovely, and all the better for a decent Primitivo to wash it down with, though I did have some FOMO when my wife's spicy prawns arrived, as they looked delicious.

Visited in person a week before to reserve a table for two in the front area. Whilst this was not guaranteed we did not expect on arrival to be shown to two high chairs on a window ledge. We explained this was not acceptable and eventually the manager offered us a table next to the kitchen area. We have been to Mascalzone many times in the past but this was the first time since they extended their premises. Compared to previous occasions, overall we were disappointed.

Went for a meal with neighbours several weeks ago, had a fantastic meal & was seated towards the back of the restaurant beyond the kitchen area. Went tonight with family & had excellent food but our table could not have been in a worse location. We were seated next to the kitchen area which was busy & noisy with a constant stream of staff coming to place & collect orders. Although it is August it was a cool evening. There was an open door beyond the kitchen area & I asked if the door could be closed because it was quite drafty. Staff did close the door which led out to the rear yard. However staff were going out into the rear yard to fetch supplies & keeping the door closed was clearly impractical.

Mascalzone is a neighbourhood restaurant tucked away in Sandyford. It is well worth a visit. The service is very attentive and warm. The cooking is excellent and has a Sardinian twist. A bit different from a standard Italian. We had a very pleasdant and relaxing evening.

Another superb meal from the team at Mascalzone. Each dish ordered was enjoyed and tasted delicious. Varied specials menu and attentive service. They even had the presence of mind to keep our car keys safe when they noticed them on the floor. Bravo.

Walked in when there was two tables filled, all other tables including outside was empty, upon asking for a table, the cashier quite rudely just said "No" and looked at us, we asked why she said, "were full" and just stared at us, went down the road to the mini lobo rojo and immediately recieved much better service.
