Masala Craft- Fast Casual Indian Tapas, Curry & cocktails Bar in York

I had the absolute worst experience at Masala Craft. We were really excited to try the food here, but the staff’s behavior was shockingly unethical and rude. From the moment we arrived, the employees seemed completely disinterested in serving us. To make matters worse, the manager was openly shouting at the staff, telling them to prioritize emptying tables even when we only ordered tea. It was uncomfortable to witness and seemed like a toxic work environment for the employees. There was no sense of courtesy towards customers. It felt like we were an inconvenience rather than guests. No matter how good the food might be, if you can’t treat customers with respect, you won’t retain them. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I would strongly advise anyone in York to avoid this place. Hands down the worst dining experience I’ve ever had in England!

Visited as part of a group of 12 this weekend and WOW!! Everything was incredible. 12 extremely happy guys, many of whom suggested it was the best Indian food they'd ever eaten!! Delicious food, incredible service....5 stars isn't enough. We'll be back!!

Awful Experience!!!!! My visit to Masala Craft in York was a disaster from start to finish. The service was atrocious—slow and inattentive. None of the tables were ready, and when we finally sat down, there were no cutlery or napkins provided. It was clear the staff didn't care about their customers. The food was another huge letdown. Although the taste was just okay, the portions were ridiculously small. I ordered Choley Bhatoore expecting a main course, as listed in the lunch and dinner section, but received a very small portion. When I questioned this, they claimed the portion had been reduced without lowering the price. This is outright theft. Overall, Masala Craft is a scam. They offer terrible service and rip you off with their misleading menu and inflated prices. Avoid this place at all costs.

Worst experience ever, I had ordered main and I was expecting it to be a quantity of main meal as I had the same dish earlier , however the food we received was unexpected and later on when I asked the waiter about the quantity he was like earlier it was a meal however now we have made it as side dish. I totally understand if they have made it as side dish, but the price is been same as of the meal, it doesn’t make sense if you are charging the same price for the quantity of meal for a side dish, it’s ridiculous. And moreover it’s not even updated in the menu about the price and the dish is being moved from mains to side dishes. It’s a scam. I Was a regular customer and now won’t even bother visiting anymore, not at all recommended. Absolutely ripping off.

I will 100% order again: Yogurt Chaat, Samosa Chaat, and Pau Bhaji. Delicious! I liked: Prawn Kolkwadi (apologies if mispelled). I wished: the Masala Chips were hot, freshly fried, and not slightly soggy - tasty flavours still. Friendly service, a bit too warm during hot summer days - might want to consider a fan in there. Otherwise happy with our first try, will come again and bring friends & family.

Very underrated place in York, lots of flavours, great food, interesting options, reasonable prices.

Being an Indian, this place had some authentic dishes which reminded of Mumbai. We tried the Prawns Koliwada, Ragada Pattice, Pav Bhaji, Onion Baji and Mango Kulfi. This place is by far the only Indian restaurant in York which serves good indian food and deserves more recognition.

Masala Craft is located in Walmgate and is a nice cosy little restaurant serving an excellent selection of small dishes as well as more traditional mains. We shared a range of non meat as well as meat small dishes which were delicious and not at all oily. The food is imaginative and flavourful and reasonably priced for the centre of town. Service was attentive and even though the restaurant was a little quiet on a Tuesday evening, it did fill up later. We will certainly return.

We ordered chicken korma and we were not given a dish which even remotely resembled a chicken korma. It was a dark reddish brown, more like a tikka in colour but with a brown tinge. It was very spicy and did not have the sweetness of a korma. It just wasn’t a korma at all, it tasted nothing like it and was far too rich and full of turmeric. It had so much turmeric in it that it stayed my boyfriend’s hands yellow when he spilt a little and both of our mouths are stained too. We both already have stomach aches because of the overwhelming spices which we are not used to. The poppadoms were nice on the other hand but nothing special, same in regard to the naan bread. The rice reminded me of one you can get in a shop bought takeaway but filled with strong fragrant spices which were overwhelming. I only managed one spoonful of rice and left the rest. The waitress was nice and polite and fairly quick so the service was fine but the food was just so so disappointing. We were really looking forward to trying it and having tried a few Indians in York as big chicken korma fans, we think this is definitely the worst we’ve had so far. Maybe if you’re into spicy dishes it’s fine but we’re not.

Our first visit to this small, interesting little eatery, slightly off the beaten track. We experienced some Indian dishes we had not had anywhere before & was not disappointed. We our now rating this eatery as our top choice for Indian Food in the country. We chose the Pork Vindaloo & Panjabi Lamb for our mains. Both dishes were fabulous with really tender meat & full bodied gravy. The server overly warned about the heat level of the vindaloo however the warmth was just perfect. We shared a mushroom rice however you might want to order a portion each for those with a hearty appetite. We tried the Yorkshire Cheese Nann which I’m happy to report was not overly cheesy. We had to wait 25 mins for drinks to be served a re request for water for the table hence the 4/5 overall but otherwise great. Vegetarians & those with other special dietary requirements are very well catered for too.

Tried this colourful little eatery prior to the University Baroque Ensemble which was being held just a hop away at the NCEM. Lovely, cheery, vibrantly colourful decor. Staff managed to allocate us a table for 3, despite not having a booking, which was very much appreciated. Good selection on the menu. I tried two of the smaller plates, Yoghurt Chaat Boom had a bit of a fiery edge to it, ever so slightly too spicy for my tremulous tum, but the other one, Cauliflower 65, was really yum. Cheffy even came out of his kitchen to check if all the food was fine. They take both cash and card payment here, though there was some delay and confusion around my cash payment. Yes, I would dine here again. It's convenient and has an interesting enough menu to lure me back.

Very good food and great value for money. Only maked the atmospher a 4 as it was a cold wet and windy night with few people about. Will be back to try something new. Fish curry was fab!

Poor experience… we visited on a weekday and the restaurant staff were very rude… told us that they have a policy of 15 pounds per head… food quality and taste was poor… chicken was not cooked properly as well

Visited in March and really enjoyed our meal. Everything was fresh and had great flavours. Portion sizes were perfect and even had to take some home. Onion bhaji and chicken pakora side plates were both lush… crispy and not greasy like you would find in other places. I must go

Really nice food, lovely friendly service, room was a bit cool but we warmed up when the belly pork vindaloo came. Great menu choices, lots of veggie and vegan and gluten free options, very flavoursome and tasty. Reasonable prices, loads of food and a few drinks was less than 50 for us tonight. Recommended.

Great atmosphere, delicious food and fast service! Really great and authentic tasting Indian food. Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. The cocktails were really yummy too. The staff members who looked after us were very friendly and polite. We will definitely visit again!

Overall enjoyable and tasty food. Not overly spiced but hot enough to be interesting. Nice naan and roti, we ordered quite a lot of side dishes and finished all of them as well as our main courses. The restaurant was a bit empty when we arrived but filled up quite quickly. When I am back in York I would definitely return.

Best Indian in York hands down. We love Masala Craft - the food is authentic, they give great sized portions and service is always fab. We’re big fans of their pork belly vindaloo, chicken tikka masala and their tandoori mixed grill. Must order the kachumber salad to really make you feel like you’re eating in an indian home.

Just returned from an absolutely delightful meal at Masala Craft. Would highly recommend this place for those seeking an indian meal with a contemporary curry-house feel. We ordered the Onian Bhajis, Yoghurt Chaat Boom and Vada Pav to start - all of which were absolutely delicious, and I'd highly recommend that Yoghurt Chaat Boom! Pork Belly Vindaloo and Fish Curry accompanied by Cheese Naan and Masala Chips to follow, again, would highly recommend each of these dishes on their own, but together made for a fantastic Indian banquet for 2! Will definitely return and recommend to others!

Hello fellow food-lovers, I recently dined at this place in Walmgate where I was served a good meal with a heavy dose of insult for dessert. If you are looking for a food review, I would say really good samosa chat and even better paav bhaji (the chef was right that his pav bhaji is one of the best in York). But, there was a small problem with the meal. There was a hair in the food, stuck from the edge of the plate. After I finished my meal (the old one with the hair was replaced with a fresh plate), I ordered a nimbu soda (again nicely balanced flavours for which I complimented the chef immediately). I had just had my first couple sips of the drink when the chef stepped into the dining area and asked how I liked the food. I gave him an honest response that it was all very good "except the small hiccup" with the hair. This clearly didn't go down well with him as he quoted this in the insult heaped on me afterwards. For want of space in this review column, I must summarise very briefly the events that followed thereafter. Basically, I was humiliated in every possible way--from being called out for being one such customer who would create a fuss and do anything to get a complimentary meal, to being suspected that it could have been my hair (as he maintained that it wasn't one of the staffs' as it was an all male-team and the hair in question was a long, grey one), to later being accused that it was my hair indeed and that I had deliberately planted it there (it was properly stuck to the edge of the plate which I had only touched from another corner to adjust the angle for taking the picture)! I was repeatedly asked to leave his restaurant amid a downpour of insults and wasn't even allowed to finish my drink when I requested if I could (the chef instead deducted it from the bill and asked me to leave immediately or he would call the police). My response? I had begun with suggesting him to take responsibility as whether or not it was some customer's, I was having a meal served by him. That was my biggest mistake as he didn't like to hear that. Upon being accused that it was my hair, I suggested looking up the CCTV recordings which he completely ignored. And the worse thing I did was to try and reason with him, asking him to please calm down, adding that I wanted to support small businesses like his! My arguments were 90% shock of what was happening with me and 10% requesting him to be mindful of his hurtful words and behaviour. I would still like to give him the benefit of doubt and consider it an odd event. I must clarify that this review is not at all intended to impact either his business or challenge the general consensus that his food is tasty. The only reason it was necessary for me to speak up is for the sake of it! P. S. I just read other reviews about the chef's behaviour after posting my review. I got some consolation that I am not the only one. Best,

It was a place I've been curious about opening and its food for a long time. And finally we were able to visit. The food, service and venue were very nice. I especially liked the Punjabi Samosa Chatt. I have eaten Samosa in many places, but the service and taste of this one were incredible. It looks like it will be a restaurant I will visit often.

I have been here 3 times now. I am happy to openly state how excellent the food was. I went with my friends and I ordered Panjabi Lamb, Chicken Pakora, Cheese Naan, Pilau Rice and this amazing drink called "Mango Lassi". I am not usually the type of person to experiment with when ordering Indian dishes but this is an exception; every time I come here I always like to try something new and have never been let down so far and I don't think I ever will. Reasons why I enjoyed the food: - The Chicken Pakora was a delicious starter for me as it was very juicy and contained lots of flavour. On top of that the sauce that came along gave it a nice smokey texture alongside it which really complimented the chicken pakora. - The Punjabi Lamb is an excellent choice that I recommend to anyone who visits this place. Typical Indian restaurants that I have visited are white-washed but the seasoning used here were authentic. I could not describe the taste and so I recommend this most of all. The sophistication of the sauce, herbs and tender lamb were delicious. - The Cheese Naan is something I have not tried ordering before as I usually settle for regular naan but I found that it's even better and worth every bit. I unfortunately forgot about the rest of my meal and focused on this as it was just so flavourful. When I found out that Masala Craft was closing I was very upset because the two times I visited was greeted with excellent customer service and freshly made high quality food. I am very glad that they have reponed and the design of it is very funky and energetic. It is a place people can recognise if they saw it in the distance and think to themselves "It's masala craft". I find the lightning and overall atmosphere very exuberant. I will definitely be coming here on my birthday again to try even more of the dishes here.

Incredible experience. Really enjoyed all of it, the aesthetic of the whole place was truly lovely to see and was very unique. The staff were very friendly, attentive and always happy to help. The food was exceptional, with the chicken pakora, cheese naan and Mango smoothie being standouts for me. I will definitely come here again with my family. Good food! Lots of gluten free options! Did not get sick! (Celiac). I think the flavors were nice but I am not a curry expert. We had the bahji, tandoori chicken, potato curry and polano rice. Tapa size portions. It was enough for us but you might want to add an additional dish. I would eat here again Reasons it got four—portion size and restaurant cleanliness. I think many restaurants are overrated.

Food was very bad. We ordered pav bhaji and it a really small portion not enough for kids as well 2 spoon fulls . Avoid this place. Don’t waste your money there

Food was mind blowing. I didn't expected it be good like the ones in India but I was surprised how well they have prepared the food. It tasted amazing. Best service I must say. Went to that place a little late very close to closing time so we couldn't eat at the restaurant so we opted for takeaways. They didn't have some things left with we wanted (which is good sign that their food was good) but whatever we got was amazing. Recommendation- samosa chaat and vada pav. Also had panner Achari and Garlic Naan but best was chat 😋

We had our NYE meal out and it was amazing, the food was really tasty and the staff were really helpful and polite. It’s a nice relaxed atmosphere and the food came out in good time. It’s 1 of the best Indian meals I have eaten in a long time and I’m looking forward to heading back again soon. The Samosa chaat was banging…..

The food was very nice, coyldn't fault it, however the restaurant was very cold. We didn't realise that we were required to keep the same plates which wasn't helpul as we had stacked them together after the first course. Using the same plates would have been fine, had we been told at the begining. As stated, the food was great.

Lovely unexpected meal here last night after original venue just seemed to far after days journey. Staff super helpful, draught indian lager and some nice twists on the usual fare. Try the yoghurt chaat boom!! Highly recommended

We had a fantastic meal for FOUR with drinks, well, cocktails anyway. We received a warm welcome upon our arrival. We ordered cocktails on arrival, four different ones, absolutely gorgeous drinks. Our server was most helpful with great advice. We had starters and mains, he did ask if we were ok with everything arriving when they were ready, this was ok with us as we were famished. I must admit there wasn't much delay with the starters arriving and the mains, TBH they probably all came at the same time. UPON reflection the food was fantastic, plenty for all, maybe too much as we had to take a doggy bag with us. We loved the cocktails, much better than the ones we had in the hotel 😁. Would deffo go again when we come to York......

Found this little gem at the beginning of the year the food is amazing as is the staff they cant do enough to make shore you have the best exsperiance they can offer, the mixed grill is very good offering little bits of everything also masala dosa best iv had Masala Fries are my sons favorite including the peshwari naan he loves the railway potato cury and chicken pakoras, my faverite tho is chana dal lental curry and the Achari paneer Tika is a furm favorite of all of the family if you only try it once id advise to order yoghurt chat boom these little morsels are a tast explosion that you will never regret also the drinks are realy nice cocktails made with love and plenty of yummyness to keep you comming back again and again xx

So sad been looking forward to trying here.. what a disappointment, firery hot with out flavour , when i mentioned this the chef came out to intimidate us left without finishing drinks or food , very bad end to what should of been a family trip out .. shame on you … indigestion and sickness to remember it by….UPDATE to you response there was only three pieces of meat in my meal which I agree we ate , the whole sauce was left along with full rice and naans never arrived so could not of eaten them , I wrote only one review which I feel to be honest in fact it is the only review I have felt strongly enough about bad food to have written , it was never my intention to get free food as we paid in full . One star too many. We ordered our food to be told 15 minutes later, the chef doesn’t know how to cook the balti or madras! I don’t really need to go into the rest that was bad enough. Never again, avoid!

Bit of a shambles but the food that came was ok apart from what was being called chicken pakora. This isn't chicken pakora. what I got was popcorn chicken. Some dishes were not available due to lack of ingredients???? ( On a Saturday and could they not have gone to Sainsbury's for mushrooms???) No draft beers. The beers we did get were warm and then they ran out too. Better off going to a proper Indian. Oh and sticky tables.

The food was absolutely ridiculous, Undercooked so we sent it back and they then decided to send it back after it had been microwaved. At this point i just wanted something else, And they had complete attitude with me for my requests even though i was being extremely reasonable and talking politely. I ordered a starter, masala dosa, and a drink. After a long day at work I thought I would treat myself with a nice dinner but alas I regret eating here. The food was stale and it had weird smell. It was so bad that I had to waste it despite the fact that I was hungry and generally I don't do food wastage. In hunger I consumed half the food but halfway I realized how stale the food was. If I am ever in York again and this restaurant will be the only option I will have, I will rather starve than eat their stale food again. I had the best and the worst food elsewhere but this was worse than the worst. I am not a native English speaker but I know that worst is superlative and that there cannot be anything worse than worst, but this food made me think otherwise. The worst food I had elsewhere was tasteless and whatnot but it was not stale like the food I had here. If some of your items are not popular and you are not able to finish them by the end of the day you prepare them, don't just keep them for later hoping you can get rid of them by serving it stale to unsuspecting diner(s), instead remove them from your menu. This kind of malpractice not only hampers the diner(s) meal and their stomach but also the restaurant's reputation and make diner(s) afraid of eating out. I have eaten the infamous street food of India but I never had upset stomach after eating them like I had after eating the stale food here. When I told my partner later that upon being asked how the food was by the server I replied to them saying I had high expectations but I was disappointed, my partner said she can feel how bad the food was because I generally don't comment that harshly no matter how bad the food were.

Good food, down to earth friendly and efficient staff despite how busy they were. Everyone loved the food and drinks.

Great food but terrible customer service. Apparently the waiter forgot to put my order into the system (from his written notepad? Why? Just decide on whether to use a notepad or an electronic system?), so I waited almost an hour for my drink, then the waiter asked something along the lines of "you ordered food, right?". They were friendly at first, but an hour long wait just for drinks, when the restaurant is almost empty is simply too long. The service personnel kept "forgetting about me" and even though there were 3 (!) People working around the bar and tables, but nobody actually paid attention to the customers. After paying I went to the loo and there were spiderwebs (!) Inside the toilet bowl! As I was leaving the same waiter as before uttered a very unfriendly sounding "hello?!" as if asking what I was doing here.

York is poor for curry in general but this is a rare gem. pork vindaloo is delicious and its good value if you get their bundle thingy

This little gem is a little walk off the main road. The service was amazing, Chris was prompt and welcoming. The food was delicious and fast. Service was impeccable from our server Chris, who made our 4yrs anniversary memorable. Definitely recommend.

Food was good, service ruined it. Booked a table in advance only to wait for one to be made when we arrived. Downhill from there. Wrong drinks brought to the table, waited 50 minutes for Poppadoms and a starter only for the rest of the mains to be brought out 2 minutes later and going cold whilst eating the starters. Barman was shouting at staff unnecessarily, and other customers that were complaining about the service. Very chaotic! Not to mention the state of the toilets...

Arrived with a large party we had reserved a table. Service was very slow from the Indian people who worked there. The lovely bubbly lady with amazing eyelashes and the bar manager were great with service. Sadly the restaurant were very mean with the number of popodums so all each person got was to crack a piece off. I cannot fault the food which was delicious my only issue being it was served slowly, some people got rice but then the wait for the rest of the food was long meaning food was cold for some. The spoiler for me was I asked for the recipe for the cocktail I had enjoyed. The bar manager happily provided it for me to photograph and the chef came from the kitchen claiming it was a secret recipe, snatching the cocktail description and totally humiliating me in the process as well as shouting at the bar manager. If that is how staff are treated for me I would now not return. I have no problem with him saying I am sorry but the recipe is a secret. I would happily accept that but the way je treated me and also spoke to the bar manager was totally unacceptable.

On arrival we were seen to our table and orders taken. 2 out of 3 drinks arrived 20 minutes later... we had to ask for the third drink as it just never arrived. Food didn't arrive until we had been waiting 90 minutes!!! And that was either lukewarm or cold. Again only 2 peoples food arrived without the naan breads and when that had been eaten the nan breads and the third meal arrived, by which time we had nothing to accompany the bread . Completely haphazard and no apology for the extremely long wait and disorderly service. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a more than disappointing evening.
