Duke of York in York

Visited here on a Friday lunchtime. We ordered the halloumi wrap with roasted peppers, salsa, and baby gem lettuce but I asked for this as a sandwich which they did. Also ordered the chicken wrap with chips, and the steak and ale pie with vegetables, mashed potato, and gravy. You can order off the lunch or main menu at lunch time which is handy. The food arrived quickly and was tasty. It was a bit cool inside so I did ask if the heating could be turned up, but I didn't notice it get any warmer. Overall enjoyable meal and I would recommend.

Service was exceptional from the moment we walked in. Every care was taken regarding my allergies (a few trips to the kitchen) to ensure my meal was served without issue. Food portions were immense & very tasty. Lovely cosy atmosphere in the centre of York, was a great find, highly recommend a visit & will definitely be back.

Food delicious and service outstanding. Would definitely return.next visit toYork. Very central for dropping in for a rest and drink in a busy shopping/sightseeing day.

Hi. Had a lovely meal at the DoY on Saturday. My only criticism was that the pub was short of staff for a very busy Saturday lunchtime. The bar was very busy with customers ordering food and drinks with not much attention to who was next. Having said that the lady on the bar did a great job and was happy and friendly despite being rushed off her feet!

We enjoyed a delicious traditional English pub meal here with family, it was surprisingly quiet when we arrived but the atmosphere inside was calm and relaxed and the food was extremely tasty.

Great pint of Leeds pale plus several other craft ales.

Great Sunday lunch in a traditional but not too loud/busy city tavern. Staff are always attentive and friendly. Also, the veggie option is very good.

I held my retirement party here on the 12th of January 2024. The experience was excellent . The room provided was perfect for my needs. The food was very good also. The staff were very helpful and everyone enjoyed the night. I would recommend the Duke of York and would visit again. Thankyou to all concerned. Graham

At 13:30 on a Sunday there were items such as their advertised nut roast no longer on the Sunday lunch menu which suggests lack of attentiveness and forethought. There were limited other options for vegetarians. We had to seek out staff to clear the tables and sounds it difficult to order drinks and desserts (eventually ordering at the bar). One of our party said her veg cold.

Our annual get together at the Duke of York lived up to expectations. Once again good food and service with a smile. Recommend the Cocolate & Orange tart. Many thanks everyone see you again next year!

Visited on New Years Day with 12 friends for late lunch at 4pm. We had pre-ordered and food was brought promptly to table. I had baked Gruyère with toasted focaccia which was delicious. All other starters were well received - homemade soup, chicken livers, prawns, etc. It was roasts for lunch - I had the beef and it was scrummy! All other dishes (lamb, chicken, pork and steak pie) were also enjoyed by all. Lovely vege and Yorkshire puds served too! Portions very generous. Desserts of sticky toffee pud, choc tart, treacle tart and cheese and biscuits were also very generous and all wonderful. The staff were delightful, we weren’t rushed but service was efficient and friendly. Great wine with the meal too. Thoroughly recommend.

Booked in advance with deposit and menu choices as we were a party of 9, I thought the communication was very good. We all really enjoyed our meals, the consensus was that it was the best place we had eaten on our trip. I thought the service was friendly and timely, will definitely back when next in York

Visted boxing day, booked before going, was shown to a lovely table downstairs by the Christmas tree. We both had the pie, which was piping hot and absolutely delicious. My husband had a pudding sticky toffee and said it was spit on . We also tried the draught cider, which we found to our taste. It was very busy , could not fault the service and staff

Very disappointed with service. We booked a month or more in advance as this was a return visit. No draft bear available 😕. We were told our table was upstairs so we went up and found it ourselves. No one came to see us until we found someone 20 minutes after we had sat down. No one took a drinks order so we were up and down the stairs ordering our drinks at the bar and taking them back up to our table. The food was excellent and good quality but the lack of service and lack of cheerful bar staff was a big disappointment especially when we were on holiday Christmas week. 😕 I understand that things happen but don't take bookings if you can't provide the experience. However food as always very good

Nice place, nice staff and good beer. Lacked a bit of atmosphere, but that may have been the time I went. Great spot in the centre, where if you get a window seat you may see the street entertainment.

So grateful to you. Food was lovely, service friendly. But most of all I had asked you to make some adjustments because one of our group has some difficulties. Everyone was responsive and helpful so that he (and all of us) were able to have a great lunchtime meet-up. Thank you

We’re very accommodating for a big group of us. Small place but they were able to give us an area for ourselves for 20 people. Christmas buffet was very nice and the service was perfect

Although the young lady serving us wasn't well and had nearly lost her voice ,,her customer service was excellent thanks very much

Had a roast dinner was nice however got 2 spuds and cost extra for more also pigs in blankets where a Extra but it was nice services was hit and miss thou staff on bar didn't seem interested

Service was appalling, came in and sat down with a drink, decided to grab some food went to the bar to order told I wasn’t allowed to order despite the table next to us ordering their food less than a minute before I went up. Bonkers. Staff don’t seem very willing to help and can’t pour a pint of stout to save his life

Dined here with 9 friends from outside of York on an annual get together . I’ve eaten here before and the food is always good. Our starters & mains were excellent and the cheeseboard fabulous. Generous portions and all served timely on what was an extremely busy Saturday. Thank you to James and his team for looking after us. the drinks, particularly the White Russian were great and generous measures . We will be back .

A good place for a spot of lunch,I only had the fish and chips so can't say what the rest of the menu was like, very nice fish and chips although the mushy peas were a bit strange tasting like blitzed garden peas.

Looked forward to this because of the great reviews have to say very poor Sunday roast and £18.50 too that’s expensive by any standard Worst Yorkshire puddings burnt dried out solid inside to say we were in York these should be brilliant watery gravy very small portion for the money eventually a server came over to ask how things were when told the food was not to par just apologised and left no offer of replacement Yorkshire puds nothing Didn’t see anyone else after that no bill or anything went to the bar to then queue too pay very disorganised to say the least sadly will not return better options elsewhere

Booked a table for first nite stay in York ..we visited in 2021 and ate here so defo wanted to return.. 2 of us had the steak ale pie and hubby had sausage and mash . Food was delicious and service fab and pub was packed out . Defo will eat here again xx

Just back home from two super days in York with my wife a major highlight of which was our decision to book the Duke of York for dinner. This is way better than normal pub food! Lovely, cosy atmosphere and really friendly staff who remembered our booking and a couple of little requests. Most important though was the quality of the food and service. With only four starters I could have chosen them all - I went for Chicken livers and Black pudding cooked beautifully - Fab yul yus!! My wife chose spicy Scotch Egg, again a winner. We both had Sirloin Steaks cooked just as requested and served with a gorgeous spicy sauce. Cannot recommend this place strongly enough - a really superb night and it’s not the wine talking!!

We had an excellent pub meal and a couple of drinks. It was a lovely experience. Wouldn't hesitate to go again.

Great pub. Super atmosphere. Food is out of this world. Delicious. Not your typical pub food, way beyond that. Beautifully cooked and great presentation. Great value.

Food was excellent. Extremely hot and quality and quantity were spot on. It is clear that the chef on Friday evening 17th November really cared about what they served up. Waiting staff were also very attentive and happy to serve drinks to the table. Excellent restaurant quality food at pub prices.

We spent Saturday afternoon in a private area, the Tap Room, with family and friends for a birthday celebration. I ordered a buffet and the food was delicious and plentiful. I went for the Canapés option which included lamb koftas, goats cheese tart, sweet potato fries and guacamole. I booked and ordered the food with James who was very professional and quick to respond with any information requested. James was attentive on the day and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I would have no hesitation recommending The Duke of York.

Lovely venue. Good service, fantastic food and importantly excellent value for money. Would certainly visit again.

Nice pub and location, Sunday roast wasn't up to much though unfortunately.

Nice cosy decor and good location....... A pub, not a dining experience. It's a seat yourself, order at the bar kind of place, and due to staff inattentiveness we changed our mind about eating there. The menu has plenty of options but if you're looking for a restaurant experience you're better off going to a restaurant. Even though it was early (5pm) and out of season (November), the staff seemed unable to keep up. Having said this, it shouldn't be the job of the bar staff to clear tables, a member of staff dedicated to greeting, waiting and clearing is needed for a more welcoming experience.

Visit on November 14th, 2022 - lunch and beverages. Had popped in the previous evening but was much too busy. Lunch was excellent, tasty, and reasonably priced. Great location and selection of beverages. Staff were friendly, helpful and professional. Associated images - main bar and an absolutely delightful steak & ale pie, which was incredibly tasty.

My favourite pub in York. Leeds Brewery ales, and Midnight Bell was an option.

Food is very nice 😋 but very small for the money.

Booked a table for lunch but wasn’t really necessary although there are days when it gets really busy. We’re given a lovely table near the fire with a good view of the entertainment on the square. The food was excellent served in a very friendly atmosphere. Great range of beers. Recommended.

Staff were lovely place is nice, unfortunately our drinks glasses were quite dirty had to scrape bits off the inside thankfully staff replaced them without hesitation. Food took over an hour to come out and chicken was dry/over cooked fish lacked flavour chips under cooked. Probably just a bad day…

We recently held a family gathering at the Duke of York. The staff couldnt have been more helpful or attentive, right from booking, to being served, to the quality and quantity of the food to settling the bill. We were able to use the upstairs area for a private function. The food which was lovely was delivered at the stated time. Staff were very efficient and courteous. Excellent venue for a family gathering - would defintely recommend. JR

Had read good reviews about the roast dinners served here, so decided to book. Absolutely delicious, couldn’t fault! Great service, lovely cosy rustic pub. Thoroughly recommend!

Venue nice -food not great Fish and chips pretty bad ( soggy) and the roast beef meal disappointing Eating out these days is expensive and much as we like to support local businesses, can't justify such spending on food which isn't as good as something you could cook at home for a quarter of the price. We'd rather pay more IF the meal was very good, tasty and was therefore an experience we'd look forward to repeating

I can't praise the staff and food too much! This was actually our second visit to York within months and eating here was high on our "must go again" list. Each time the staff went over and above to create a meal which I could eat under the restrictions of my medically imposed diet. They showed genuine concern and then took extra care to produce some of the tastyest food I've eaten. Their cocktails are pretty good too X

The service was extremely slow and they had run out of most things on the menu. When the food did arrive it was nice but very over priced. The pub itself was a nice vibe and interior.

Great pub! Whilst staying in York for a short break, we visited this pub on a Sunday evening. It was quiz night, but we managed to find a free table and enjoy some drinks as well as guess a few answers to the quiz questions. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere and decor of the pub was lovely!

Whenever we come to York we like to visit this pub. You can either relax with a drink or have a meal - whichever you fancy. I was looking forward to the Butternut Squash Risotto which I had last year and was disappointed that they’d removed it from the menu - I guess I was foolish for thinking that they wouldn’t change it.

Great service and lovely food in a historic setting in the centre of York. Have been several times over the past year and would recommend for both value and quality.

An excellent pub for both food and drink, food is served until 21 00 its very good quality beer is superb, the staff are friendly and helpful.

Great place. Nice venue for something bigger than lunch. Bar menue is wonderful. Had the best Whitby mussels in creM sauce ever, so tasty. Sirloin steak cooked to perfection. Nice selection of beers and ciders as well as other spirits. Cosy place to sit, rest and enjoy a lovely meal. Thumbs up!

An accidental find for us, we had read no reviews, we were looking for a menu that featured vegetables in the meal. This lovely old pub delivered. We started with the gin special, artisan flavored gins. Our meals were excellent, perfectly seasoned steak and ale pie, with hints of blue cheese in the gravy and pork sausage in an amazing unctuous gravy. The vegetable sides were perfectly cooked carrots, parsnips, leafy greens. I still have the mouthful umami taste as I write this review. Well done Duke of York team.

Excellent Sunday nut roast dinner with very friendly service in a cosy pub. The food was fresh, very tasty and the best vegetarian roast in York!

Superb experience a few weekends ago. We took our children and dog for Sunday roast. The atmosphere was exactly what you’d want for Sunday lunch, the food superb and despite it being so busy, the young waiter was faultless in his care and attention. I would give it 10* if I could!

Got in last minute for a meal, ordered with 7 minutes to spare before the kitchen closed for the night. Good staff, rapid service, a nice place to spend an hour or two.

Only went in for drinks, but had a really good busy atmosphere. Sat upstairs where it was a bit quieter, and they had good music on.

Came to try the barista stout, recently shown on the Facebook page. I was looking for pubs in the area and this had caught my eye, it was lovely and I'm glad I visited, some nice unusual beers on offer!

Booked a meal here for our group of 12, very accommodating when booking the table , just requested a preorder which meant our food was served promptly after we were seated. The food was so delicious 😋 and good quality, all our party said it was a place they would re visit. Staff really friendly and nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend as a good place to eat and drink whilst in York.

I was genuinely surprised that our tour guide recommended this as I wasn't thrilled by the food. They were sold out of two of the plates I was interested in, so I ordered the risotto. I'm afraid it was not that great for the price I paid... Fantastic cozy atmosphere and the food came out quickly. It's a "seat yourself" kind of place where you order entrees at the bar and bring your drinks to the table. Perhaps go for drinks rather than a dining experience.

Our first trip here as a family. Lovely place and very dog friendly. The Sunday roast (once it arrived) was the best we’d ever had! Unfortunately they didn’t seem to have enough staff on for the amount of customers. We waited 45 mins for someone...

The only thing that spoilt it was the presences of dogs, the food was excellent and the service was superb. Unfortunately dog's being there let it down.
