Food was very well executed. Pub is nice and historic. Decent selection of alcohol-free beers for those in need of such things.

Gorgeous building, lovely decor. Food came out very fast and even though I'm a fussy eater, I had no complaints at all. I had the sausage, mash and roasted veg and it was all delicious. Definitely coming back here.

Came for a meal and a drink. Nice place right in the centre of York. Service was ok.Good choice of drinks but the lager I ordered didn't taste great. We ordered food which took far too long to arrive and to be fair, 10 chips with my fish and chips was not good considering how much it cost.

Our annual get together at the Duke of York lived up to all our expectations. Great service, lovely food and a comfy, cosy location in the centre of York. We love coming here each year and will continue to do so in 2026. My butternut squash, goat's cheese and spinach Wellington was wonderful. A big thank you to you all.

Had a lovely Sunday roast, chose the chicken option it was great but a little on the dry side would prefer it alittle more moist, definitely recommend

First class pub: friendly and efficient staff and excellent food. Old world feel with wooden beams giving a welcoming atmosphere.

Empty when we arrived around 11.40am but was packed full by 12.15pm. Couldn't order food until 12. I opted for the pork cooked three ways and my friend chose the Yorkshire Dales Burger. My belly pork was melt in the mouth but the loin was a little dry and chewy. Veg and gravy was tasty but the mash definitely needed more butter and seasoning. The burger was served with homemade skin on chips which mt friend enjoyed. 2 pints of Pepsi max was £8.40 and the meals cost £36. Quite pricey for two pub grub main courses. Though decent I would definitely try elsewhere next time.

Visited yesterday 03/01/25 staff were lovely and welcoming, great atmosphere and delicious food. As always. However on this occasion with visited with my sister in law who has allergies and doesn’t speak English which always makes ordering in restaurants difficult and time consuming but the manager and the Barman working this shift were incredibly patient and helpful. They managed to find something for each course to suit her allergens even finding a dessert that wasn’t on the main menu offered so that she could have one. Despite it being busy as we arrived towards the end of the lunch rush they didn’t make us feel like we were being a pain, and if any issues arose we surely felt that they were quickly and properly dealt with. Thanks for making our trip to York extra special, my sister in law doesn’t eat in restaurants back home as they do not take her allergies seriously and she doesn’t feel comfortable but this is the first time she has eaten a three course meal in a restaurant and felt safe and happy to do so. We really appreciate it and will continue to visit when we are in York. If your after a typical, old world charm pub with great food, a good selection of beers, great staff and a warm fire close to the shambles and the minster then do give them a visit!

Ordered a meal - the meat in the pie was lovely, the pastry was rock hard !!! Re heated in the microwave , could have been used as a hand grenade! My meal was cold ,was sent back. It’s a shame the staff were not amicable as we visited this pub regularly …. We will return . Terrible service

Good choice of beers and stout.

We booked here for the location and dog friendly. We was seated in the bar area as we had the dogs. It was loud and rowdy with it being christmas. The restaurant area was more quiet. The food was decent for this kind of establishment . It's not fine dining so would score it a 7 out of 10.

A delicious lunch with excellent service. I was with my elderly parents and we were very well looked after - much appreciated. Food was fresh and well presented - 3 clean plates!!

We cannot recommend this pub enough. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. They went above, and beyond, to accommodate one of our party who has an intolerance to black pepper. The waitress spoke to the chef who cooked my friend something in a separate pan to avoid cross contamination. She thoroughly enjoyed it and was very grateful for the help given. We cannot thank them enough and we'll done.

On Friday 6th December had a Christmas lunch with 7 former work colleagues. We have had Xmas lunch here for the past 7 years. The food has always been good as is the beer selection. This year the food was delicious and full value for the price. Centrally located in the city centre highly recommended for normal as well as festive occasions.

Had a lovely midweek meal with friends whilst visiting York, food and service were excellent. Would definitely recommend.

Stopped by for lunch. Very good service, the young team were on top of it. Surprisingly good food, well worth the slight wait. Beer was well kept.

Myself and a friend visited on Wednesday night for drinks. I had a pint of Rum Cider, which I had never tried before and the bar person let me try it before I ordered, which was very kind as it might have been risky! Luckily I loved it. The atmosphere was lovely there - felt like being in a wintery cabin, I'm not sure if there was a fireplace, but it felt like that kind of place.. and I could smell something amazing coming from the kitchen.

We came in for drinks and enjoyed a few jf the different fine ales of which there were many yo choose from

Food looks nice and seems comfortable enough inside. Have only had drinks and felt it was at the expensive end of things. Perhaps due to location. Would return to try food. Out front isn't the cleanest due to pigeons

I feel compelled to write a review for the Duke of York after a lovely experience a few nights ago. We had booked a table for 7pm and in the special requests text box had said we were bringing two dogs and a pushchair, and could we possibly have a table out of the way. Not only were we reserved a fabulous table that was tucked away in a lovely corner of the pub, but we had a bowl of water waiting for the doggies, and a little handwritten note pointing to a bowl of doggie treats! It just felt very thoughtful. On top of that the food was fabulous and all the staff were lovely. Thank you so much.

Great atmosphere, the only thing missing was a friend and his friends, the boy got stuck somewhere

We are from York and just fancied a pub Sunday lunch! Got there all very smooth, showed to our table upstairs but everyone else were leaving so we asked to eat downstairs as we felt a bit left out of the hub bub. Fab moved straight away there in it went down hill! No one came to take our oder so 25 mins later we had to ask for anyone to take our order! So ....the food pretty mediocre had better Sunday lunches elsewhere in York! I did not complain as nothing was wrong with the food just bland hey ho live and learn!

Had a pleasant meal with family in the Duke of York in Kings Square, York on 1st Oct 2024 although: The dinning area was poorly lit and I had to use my phone torch to read the menu Red wine stocks were depleted, first choice was out of stock, the second choice had only one bottle left What completely spoilt it for me was the state of the gent’s toilet, the urinal was absolutely filthy, stained, caked and very obviously unkempt

Been here about 4/5 times over the course of the last couple of years. Food is extremely good and the young staff are excellent. There was a problem with the POS system and it turned out my choice was not available. However, it was sorted out and an alternative dish was ordered. A discount was immediately offered and we were impressed with the whole attitude of the staff.

Came to this place a few years ago and it was exceptional but this time food a much lower standard, had a lasagna that was nice but presentation was poor and a few green leaves was a poor excuse for a side salad ,also not proper garlic bread ,had a second booking but didn't go,won't be bothering again

Tidy pub in busy Square which is laid out over two floors. The ground floor is bar around the two wings where tables and chairs are set to look in rather than the windows. Upstairs is set for food and the toilets, but has a newly created olde worlde look. Service was fine and the beers well kept.

A perfectly well located place, but it lacks staff to attend to it. The bar staff very attentive and helpful. The “Sykes House Farm beef” burger and the Camerons beer are recommended.

The beer was as good as always. Busy but we gor served quickly by friendly staff. Nice buzz to the place. Lots of seating.

A nice pub that is not too noisy and provides a variety of beers. The decor is nice and cosy and the staff are friendly!!

I brought my nephew for lunch, having visited in the past and had nice food. I was really disappointed in the meal and although, I didn’t complain I won’t be returning.

Instantly pleased upon entering the pub, as the girl behind the bar greeted my wife and I very kindly, putting a smile on our faces. She offered us tasters of the drinks, which is always a nice bonus, saving us the awkwardness of feeling cheeky if we were to ask ourselves. She was incredibly friendly and made the whole experience a positive and enjoyable one. We only stayed for a drink as we had eaten before, but would have definitely eaten here, had we the space in our bellies 🤭 Thank you!

This is a great cosy pub with an old pub feel serving fantastic food. I had the Rib and shin beef pie which was awesome, the bone sticking out the top of the pie was a nice touch. Compliments to the chef, we'll definitely be back

The Duke of York is a charming spot in the heart of York. We enjoyed a delightful al fresco dining experience, savoring a selection of delicious small plates. The attentive service and cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind and soak up the city's ambiance.

I was expecting better experience on this pub. Food wasn't great and service could be much better! Next time I go for a different place.

Traditional pub offering home cooked food. The atmosphere is great. But it's the staff that make the pub, welcoming warm and friendly and even have a laugh and a joke. Definitely visit again.

We hired the right-hand room for my Mum's wake with a buffet and drinks tab. It went very well, the agreed arrangements worked flawlessly and the staff were friendly, helpful and sympathetic. Dog and child friendly too. High quality food and a good range of drinks available including cask ales and quality keg beer. I have no hesitation in recommending the Duke.

Worst beer I have ever had. Cloudy and tasted awful and expensive. I live on York and would not recommend this pub. It is expensive and the pipes are probably not cleaned out properly. Bad beer.

To be honest, we expected more from this place. We had ambivalent feelings. It was not bad but could have been better.

Rated as 3* because I've just been to the dirtiest gents toilets in York. My god, were they bad? ... Filthy taps and sink, floors soaking, troughs backing up, cobwebs everywhere. I usually come here every time I'm in York and like the beer but this time I was disgusted (no, I didn't report to staff because they should be doing hourly toilet checks and this hasn't just happened in the last few hours/days) Please management... get a grip cos otherwise, it's a great pub with good beer

Great family meal on Monday night in a lovely old pub in the centre of York. The steak and ale pie was fantastic and we would definitely recommend.

Typical English pub with a good atmosphere and so in York. We only took a single refreshment. We did not investigate whether we could have a snack or eat.

We visit the Duke of York every year for the last 4 years whenever we are in the city overnight. Great food and great service. We just called in on the off chance one visit and we were really impressed with the food and ambience.

We had a lovely evening in the Duke of York pub. The food was amazing with lots of choice and nice presentation. Our meals tasted great too. The pub was clean and had a lovely 'old world' atmosphere. We took our small dog in with us and he was made very welcome. The staff were so friendly and professional. Thank you to Hannah & Cameron for making the evening so pleasant. Highly recommend a visit.

We really liked this pub and was looking for food that was above the standard fried food you will get in most pubs within York. Front of bar staff were super friendly and our dinner was stellar. Make sure to try the pan seared sea bass…it was really good.

Went mid-week after 21:30 so was quite quiet, beer was okay but wouldn't recommend the elderflower cider, like weak squash and couldn't taste any elderflower which is a shame as Lilley's usually taste great.

Food was a joke. Waiting 45 mins for food and they excuse was we had a big order upstairs….food was burned, burger (obvious it was not a fresh piece of meat)….

Delicious food but long waiting time

Great selection of draught beers, Food was pretty tasty and amazing. We had the Shrimp and chorizo appetizer, baked cheese appetizer, chicken roast, mushroom and pea risotto.

Truly a nice discovery and place. Truly recommended in York which with all the clubs in the city this one really deserves as it is quite large, typical British furnishings, wide choice of beer and really good cuisine. The arrival of the order is a little slow so you wait 40 minutes or more but then it's worth it to eat something good and drink a good beer

One of the loveliest pubs in York, visit every time we're there without fail. We've had lunch and evening meal a couple times and it's always been amazing food. Service is incredible, lovely staff and really clean. Highly recommend the lunchtime menu with sandwiches and wraps, amazing food for such a good price. Great value for money. Can't wait to come back 😊

Friendly service, pie was very nice, good pastry, veg cooked well too, if I had to be picky, the mash didn't taste as good as homemade buttery mash, tasted more like the powdered kind. Still, highly recommended, would go back.

Was ok high security to the toilets had to have a code to use which is good I suppose but when your not told at the bar it's not good

The grand Old Duke of York marched me up to the top of the hill and down again with his dazzling array of ales. Genuinely love this pub, has a wonderful aura.
