Masala Bag in Cardiff

We went here for our kid's bday, and there biggest asset is the variety in the menu, and everything we ordered tasted yum. We went for their chicken thali, chicken lollypop, vada pav, dosa and gajar halwa. Everything was yum, but the lollypop and gajar halwa was exceptional! Highly recommend it! FYI- we are indians and reasonable cooks ourselves, so know our Indian food :)

Went last night and we had 2 x non veg Thalis. Not many places serves Thalis, a sign of a real Indian restaurant. Excellent and we will be back. Great food & service. 👍👍

Really nice food! Good variety of starters/street food. Have more of this. So tasty and unusual from your usual curry house. Curries are very good as well. A bit on the spicy side which is what I like. Will be going back

Two couples went to Masala Bag and two couples had brilliant food.This was not the first time we have been thereand it certainly won't be the last time.We had Street Food to start. We had chicken dosa, onion bhaji, non veg platter, lamb curry noodles and one or two other dishes to start.For main course we had methi chicken,chicken jalfrezi, mushroom rice, garlic nan & chilli nanEverything was spot on.I recommend this restaurant to one & all.Even better they are offering 50% off on a Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.

Customer service has gone down hill since the new owner took over. Very rude and ‘angry’ as they put it!

Ordered a delivery, fantastic food, enjoyed it all but could have eaten a bit more lettuce, apart from that faultless. Chilli & garlic prawns were the best. Have not used them previously, will definitely buy from there again and hope to visit post lockdown.

Reconstituted Chicken...if you don't know what that means, you don't want to. Watery. No flavour only heat. Uncooked chapattis.

We have ordered many many times from Masala Bag as takeaway - the food is always so good that we thought we HAD to go into the restaurant and have a meal in there too. As usual, the food was excellent - the rice is perfect and last night's naan was 10/10. Good portion sizes and good menu choices. Our mocktails were also great and it's so nice to have this option! They also offer Indian desserts which were yummy and great to see - it brought back memories of when we had the pleasure of working briefly in India. The service was also excellent from a very friendly polite and helpful waiter who was happy to answer questions about the menu. Food piping hot and one thing when we order takeaway is the meat dish is always placed on the bottom with the vegetarian dishes on the top in the bag - this is a big 5 stars for that detail alone! Their delivery driver is also always very polite. We will definitely be going back and ordering takeaway too. Great to actually come in and meet u guys!

Visité aquí anoche. Pedimos pollo con mantequilla, 2 papas fritas, arroz frito con huevo, bhajis de cebolla y ajo naan con una salsa de curry medio y una coca cola. Todo muy sabroso y definitivamente volveremos. Este lugar no parece tan atractivo desde el exterior, pero no se deje engañar. La comida es fantastica.

Went to dine out for lunch in the Cathays area in Cardiff and decided to go to Masala Bag, this is my second visit to the restaurant. They do some nice Indian dishes, It is different to other Indian restauants in a very good way, more authentic.

I don't know why it's not as popular as neighboring places! It's a much smaller, more authentic restaurant. It has a lovely atmosphere and lovely staff. It wipes the floor with Mowgli's next door. The food is definitely 5*.

Have been travelling around wales for 15 days. I would say this is the best Indian restaurant(outside India)I have been to for a very long time. The spices brilliant. Taste fantastic. A special mention for Disha. She was the perfect hostess.

The best ever Butter Chicken Ive ever tasted and I have tasted a lot in many countries including India. The waiter was very attentive and very good at her job. She was considerate about music level, heating etc. The Thalis were really well prepared and tasted amazing.

For a change had a deliciously cooked spicy Indian food authentic cooked in very much Indian style... Preparation was very good and spicy and presentation of item was very good.. Felt at home ans ambience was nice.. Great. Service

Had food delivered and i was impressed. Samosa chat was delicious. My most favourite was chicken tikka noodles though they were extremely spicy even though i am a desi. Chicken egg fried rice were not what I expected but they were nice too.

We called in as we were passing and hungry. The food is great, tasty and generous portions. We can recommend the thali and the fresh fruit mojito.

Another great meal. We both had a Thali, myself with chicken, my partner the Veggie option. Great tasting and very filling. Good service, however the place was quite empty. Menu has all the regular dishes and quite a few different options. Great selection of beers, ciders and cocktails at reasonable prices

Good ambiance, great indian food with lots of varieties. A must visit place. Probably one of the best curry house in the City.

Had a fab meal here today , staff were lovely and food perfect, tasty and just enough I recommend the chicken Thali , my husband went for vegetable Thali , which he thoroughly enjoyed, nice relaxed atmosphere.

I have been visiting masala bag for some time now and i have never been disappointed by, food or service. The food is always high quality with a range of choices to choose from. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They have a great fast service with dine in or takeaway. Food is always delicious and staff is wonderful. If you are looking to eat at a authentic Indian restaurant masala bag is the one.

We popped into Masala Bag recently to try out their lunch menu. They are open at 12 nearly every day except Tuesday. Not that many Indian Restaurants are open at lunch time so we were happy to give Masala Bag a go.

This was our first time visiting Masala Bag, my boys and I all ordered a mixed non veg thali. We're so glad we did, the chance to try a combination of dishes from the street feed menu is highly recommended. The meat was so tender and tasted so good, with lovely presentation. The portions are generous too, we were told to just order 2 to share between us but said my boys had big appetites, good job I did as they polished it off before me! We would return next time we're in Cardiff, its good value but they dont take card payments. Thank you :)

Ordered for collection got 10% discount. The noodles was nice but the biryani was bland, tasteless, it wasn't briyani. It was only boiled chicken and pilau rice together in the container.

From its rating, I’d say Masala Bag was underestimated. Many dishes on the menu I’ve only seen on the streets of India.

1st time there tonight, had vegetarian thali’s, very nice and very authentic. I would challenge there is better street food restaurant in Cardiff (have reviewed and eat there regularly) but this is very strong competition. We will visit again & happily recommend. Eat real Indian street food not British rubbish Indian curries.

This was literally the worst curry I have ever had. Not sure it was even a curry, i ordered chicken tikka masala and it was more like a pasta sauce. I would never order from here again and it cost me nearly £20 for one curry and rice dish. So disappointing.

We went here ordered food . I had a Madras sauce with chips and egg fried rice. My wife had butter chicken with chips and onion bhajis and we shared a garlic naan bread. My wife said her butter was the best she's had chicken was so moist and full of flavour also her onion bhajis were very good . My egg fried rice was lovely too as was the naan bread . The madras sauce was very hot hottest one I've had . The only problem was we asked for it all at once yet 1 portion of chips and bhajis came 10 mins before everything else. And water we ordered was warm . Overall though food was very nice.

Yesterday, I went to Masala bag withmy family. The place looked nice but when we ordered the food, it was taking extra long for our food to come and about the taste.. it was okay, I guess. Some food was really good but some wasn't that good. I didn't quite like their hygiene. I didn't go *inside* the kitchen.. obviously not, as it is a "staff only" area.. but from what I saw, I would say that it wasn't quite right. There was one HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING thing that happened yesterday, So, they have an alcohol "Mojito" and a fruit "Mojito" on their menu.. my brother ordered the fruit one as no one in my family consumes alcohol you see.. and the guy brought him AN ALCOHOL MOJITO... THANK GOODNESS that my brother asked him first as he could see NO FRUITS inside it!

Even thought there’s nothing fancy about the restaurant, the food is delicious. Freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Lovely staff and good service. Would definitely go again.

First time here following a recommendation and the food was really tasty, the wine was good too. Definitely worth a visit!

First time we have tried this place and wasn't disappointed. The menu has the regular currys and a lot more. We both tried something different and both the starters and main courses were excellent. Great atmosphere, and good service.

Visited masala bag for the first time. It's quite a small place and was quite busy, so the one waiter was bit run off his feet. He was none the less friendly and as attentive as he could be. The cocktails were delicious which is quite unusual for an Indian restaurant in my experience. The food was lovely, very fresh and flavourful. All in all it was a good experience and we would be glad to return.

We had a groupon deal but regardless of this the menu was very reasonably priced. Very tasty food, drinks were a good price, made to feel very welcomed, will definitely return.

First time eating here. Went with family on a groupon deal so not sure what to expect. Very pleasantly surprised at the good portions of tasty food with nice bottle of inexpensive wine. Great waiter explained the menu and was very apologetic our first wine choice was unavailable. He made another recommendation which was just right with the spicy food. Lots of locals eating there always a good sign. Spotted takeaways going out too. Would definitely return there.

The food taste authentic as you would get in an Indian home. I am marking it down based on the service. We had to wait 1.5 hours for our mains without any notice of assurance of when the food will be served. Also, my biggest disappointment was that the waiter was pushy when it comes to taking orders. Be careful not to confuse his friendly tone with him putting loads on your order to make themselves more money. Everything is charged - such as chutney for popadums is charged. My sister in law just wanted a coke but she was pushed to order a cocktail! Our bill totalled up to be a big bill - comparable to eating at places like Koh Thai Tapas and this place is no where near the ambiance or the level of established restaurants.

My usual place for a thali doesn’t do takeaway and, while this one was a bit more expensive, it had good reviews so thought why not.

First time I've ordered food from here tonight . They changed the prawn Kerala to a lamb version for me. The meat was so tender not like some restaurants. Large portion can't wait for more tomorrow!! Excellent service and reasonably price. Delivered very quickly which doesn't happen in Cardiff!!

Been here 3 times. Had a fantastic meal each time. Great quality and tasting street food served wonderfully. The menu is wide ranging and great value. They also serve fantastic cocktails. Really deserves to be a success.

Came across this gem of a place while our for a walk whist on a quick visit to Cardiff. Just wanted a light lunch as we were committed to a meal with friends that evening.

Took my young niece and nephew here on Friday. They absolutely loved it, and so did we. The food was delicious, lots of really interesting dishes to try at incredibly reasonable prices. The service was also fantastic. This place is a gem!

My wife and I decided to try something other than the traditional Sunday lunch, so we took a punt at Masala Bag. From the outside it look much at all and it was empty!!! Standard warning sign, however we were warmly greeted that was the first plus, the menu choice wasn’t extensive but we liked this, after all it was South Indian Street Food.

Wonderful well-cooked properly authentic Indian food. Everything was very tasty ineed and there's loads of choice. Plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans as well as omnivores. The owner took good care of our group of 6 and we'll all be returning. Recommended.

We went on a wiggle deal, and the vegan thali was delicious - there was a potato curry, a dahl, a mixed veg curry and a moderately spicy chickpea curry.

Visited with a friend. The nicest biryani I've had! Lovely service and the prices were very reasonable. I'd visit again.

Food was great, southern Indian style, staff friendly and accommodating. Would visit again and bring the whole family, they where great with the children on the next table, really helpful.

Visited here with my colleague Wednesday night. Food was excellent. A whole fish coated in spicy batter was delicious. Not bad for someone who doesn’t normally eat fish. Tikka masala as it should be. Thoroughly recommend especially if there are a few of you and you can share platters

We visited for the first time last using the first table website. The food was lovely and definitely worth it without the discount as prices as reasonable anyway. We both had the seafood thali which was lovely. Staff were very polite and friendly. Will definitely return

Masala Bag is a really underappreciated gem. It's a small, cozy, and otherwise unassuming space, but the service is always great and the food is delicious. It's the only truly authentic feeling Indian street food I've found in Cardiff, and compares favourably with the best places I found when visiting New Delhi and Jaipur. Ignore the "££-£££" label, at £6-8 for most mains and £3-4 for most starters, I'd say "£-££" is more apt and the value for money is great. I'd particularly recommend the Chicken Chatpata, Gosht Karak Sheek, Paneer Tikka Saslick, Chicken Dosa, and any of the naans. Go in the week if you can as it's usually very quiet, and I'd hate to see such a great restaurant close due to a lack of support.

We went to Masala Bag for the first time last month and have already been back a couple of times. Everything on the menu is delicious and our only problem is we’ve been too full to try all the dishes that have caught our eye! The 'smaller plates' are especially good value – for between £5-£7 you get a really decent sized tray with curry, bread and salad. I'd especially recommend the chicken dosa, and the naan breads are honestly the best I've ever tasted (I could live off their garlic naans). I can't stress enough just how good value this place is, and how tasty all the food is too. Book a table – you won't regret it.

Had a bargain visit through First Table. First rate dosas and then a couple of excellent thali plates. It was a speedy visit but just what we wanted and all served with a lovely smile.

After hanging around in roath park we visited this place. We are glad we chosen the right place starters were to good with great taste and well presented followed with main course and for dessert home made mango kulfi. We will surely visit next time.

Our first time at this lovely little restaurant on Crywys road. A small menu of southern Indian cuisine. Beautiful presentation that would make more expensive restaurants Proud. The food itself is perfectly spiced, freshly prepared and the flavours are amazing. Please don't be put off if it is empty as they have only been open 2 weeks. You will not be disappointed!!

Not liking to eat outside but this was the first time when I really enjoyed the food which gives you a fantastic taste and bounds you to vist the place again and again.

We only called here as a last minute thing, all others in Crwys Road were busy. What a fanatic array of flavors, beautiful presentation and a great choice. If you are after something unusual, not just a bog standard Tikka, give it a try, I'm sure it won't disappoint.

We ate dinner here - food was delicious :-) It surprised us that Mowglis a few doors up the street was super busy and Masala Bag was quiet - we've eaten a number of times at Mowglis and definitely felt the food at Masala Bag was superior in taste, quality and price - and we were delighted to encounter one of our favourite waiters from Mint and Mustard (Rakesh) is one of the owners of Masala Bag. We wish him luck and will definitely be back. We had paneer makhani, a tadka dahl, mushroom bahji, chicken dhansak, pilau rice and garlic naan - all delicious. Service was friendly, knowledgable, professional and helpful - a superior addition to the offer on Crwys Road.

Quality new Indian restaurant that is so much more than 'just another curry house'.

I really want this place to thrive and succeed. It is outstanding Indian food. Really beautiful and unusual cooking, amazingly well presented with great service. And you can bring your own booze!!

We ordered the baby octopus (excellent presentation and super tender), Indonesian lamb massaman, chicken tikka masala, rice, garlic naan, and deep fried ice cream. Everything tasted amazing and the prices were very reasonable. We were the only people in the restaurant, but we didn't mind having the whole place to ourselves. Great service from the owner, super attentive and personable. We really enjoyed being able to bring our own alcohol and they don't even charge a corkage fee!

Always like to try a new Indian restaurant. Especially when it's on our doorstep. This place has only just opened, and looks like nobody has got word yet on how amazing the food is. The quality and taste was way way above expectations. Starters were beautifully presented. The biriyani I has was probably the tastiest Indian dish I've had in my life, and I've eaten alot. My advice is get in before the prices go up. Beats Cardiff's gourmet Indian restaurants hands down. Oh you can also take your own alcohol. Only negative was we were the only ones in there, but I expect it word get busier once word is out.

Only been open two weeks, an Indian with, a Pan Asian twist. Lovely hosts who explained the menu perfectly. Starter of Soft shell crab was spiced perfectly. The mains of Lamb massaman was cooked to perfection and the Singapore fish curry was perfectly spiced and tender . Overall a great addition to the growing number of quality Indian restaurants in Cardiff. Deserves to succeed. Highly recommended.

Was a great find, me and my friends- four of us where in this restaurant on Saturday evening, from start to finish we had a very excellent service and food was number one without a doubt, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening, yes it was newly opened and we did realize it was something different than the usual curry restaurants, everything was done very carefully the set up and the food was the best that I ever had and experienced. The menu is not only indian food but the chef has collectively choosen the best main stream food from China, Indonasia, Nepal and more over from south asia and east. I highly recommend this restaurant if anyone want to try something different, later we got a chance to meet the chef and he was a decent guy who got many stories to tell about the food world, he revealed that he is and was in the food business for more than 20 years, definitely we can say that a guy with loads of experience and we can say that the restaurant will serve you the best, he has been an executive chef at times through out UK in different establishment now finally he got his own place I am sure this place will give the best.

This very newly opened restaurant provided us with a genuine taste of true Indian food that was cooked to perfection. The very experienced chef has worked in one of the very top Michelin Star Restaurants in London, and acquired his skills not only here but also at other major establishments both in the UK as well as overseas. The Chef has several speciality dishes, mainly from the North of India. My wife and I shared a starter of the whole small deep-fried (Indian style) soft shell crab and a Gurkha Roll (Nepalese spiced minced chicken wrapped in pastry then deep fried and served with a delicious home made chutney). This was then followed by the Kashmiri Lamb Rogan-Josh - (Classic Indian Kashmir delicacy - on the bone slow cooked with fennel and saffron) and a Chicken Tikka (marinated chicken cooked in a tandoor. As add ons we had a superb Tadka Dal - Bindi Masala and a chilli and coriander naan. Every course was simply divine, and offered a very different level of dining experience from a normal Indian type restaurant, where the food is usually cooked by a variety of Bangladeshi cooks. The service was extremely attentive and the tables nicely decorated with a fresh flower on each table. The food was extremely well presented with a truly authentic and excellent taste. Speaking to the chef afterwards to congratulate him on having given us such a superb meal, we learnt that he prepares his spices and marinades at least one or two days before, so the full authentic flavours permeate through each dish. My wife and I are connoisseurs of good indian food, and we were stunned by the quality of the food we ate and at such reasonable prices. We would very strongly recommend visiting this restaurant soon whilst it is still very new and gaining a foothold, and before it becomes too popular and as a result prices will tend to go up. A truly amazing by the chance find, and with a quality to match the best restaurants in town or many even at the top end of London Indian dining establishments. In fact I have rarely tasted such wonderful, proper and genuine Indian cuisine at these entry levels, and would certainly have no hesitation in recommending it for an award at some time. They say, you can always judge a restaurant by its ‘Dal’ and this was put to the test and came out with flying colours !!!
