The Martin's Arms re-opened on 27 November 2024 under the new management (Professional MasterChef winner Laurence Henry). We went on the second night it was open. We liked the refurbishment - different but still traditional and cosy. The pub was busy with drinkers with some people choosing, as we did, to eat in the bar. (There's also a dining room). The menu is a mixture of pub classics (fish and chips, burger, steak etc.) with some more 'restaurant' dishes, including game which I was very pleased to see on a menu. We enjoyed our food - it was well cooked and presented. The service was friendly, timely and accurate. I really hope it's a success.

Laurence Henry is now Chef Patron of The Martin’s Arms located on School lane,Colston Basset. We have followed his career since he was at Sat Bains and won Master Chef the Professionals in 2018. It's been a year since he slipped off the radar. As soon an opening date was announced we booked. We were practically the first through the door for lunch. The menu is not quite your typical pub grub. It has the classics and something a bit different. We chose a couple of snacks. The Venison Scotch egg and we had to try the KFP. Kentucky fried pheasant with pine & thyme. A Poached pear Waldorf starter. Spiced port, Colston Basset Stilton, candied walnuts & endive. For mains, a true pub classic Cumberland Sausage, served with Mashed potato, seasonal greens & onion gravy. Nice tasty sausage with a lovely flavoursome gravy. Line caught cod. Creamy mash potato, Sweetcorn 'chowder` with clams, cockles & smoked mussels. A large peice of cod cooked to perfection. We wish Laurence and wife Sera every success and shall return with our doggies to see if they approve too.

Stayed overnight on a short biking trip. The kitchens were closed for refurbishment but they called me in advance to let me know, so this was no problem and there are plenty of alternatives locally. That said, breakfast was available and was delicious. My room was perfect! Spacious, really clean, super comfy with a really lovely bathroom. The bed was easily large enough (I'm 6'3") and comfy. LOVED the fact that there was no TV but good quality Wi-Fi was there anyway; I wanted some peace and quiet in lovely surroundings - and found it. Really liked it too that the the rooms could be accessed from the back and not just through the (charming) bar. Once the refurbishments are complete I shall definitely be returning. Gem of a place.

Booked this place weeks ago via a booking website. The first mystery was that I received a message saying that they couldn't accept my payment card. Received a voicemail so I replied but got a member of staff who had no idea what was going on. She said she'd get back to me - but she didn't. After changing my payment card with the booking site I again tried to contact the premises to confirm the booking but made no headway - no reply to an e-mail, to a message via the booking site or from when I left a voicemail message. Eventually, I got through by phone only to be told that the Martin's Arms was to be closed for renovation during the period of my stay. If this was the case then 1) why didn't they contact me more urgently to tell me this (reply to my efforts to contact them)? and 2) why did they try to accept my payment card? All in all, I had the feel that this is a totally disorganized set-up that does not really have any sense of urgency or care about their customers - potential customers or otherwise. Very bad impression. Cancelled my booking but now I have to find accommodation in the area at short notice.

What a shamble of a pub. Drove nearly half hour to be somewhere where they don’t care about you whatsoever. At one point one young waiter realised that we were waiting long time for food and eventually we got it. Reason for two stars and not one is because my roast lamb was really tender and cooked perfectly. I hope they hire someone who is as passionate as the chef so this pub can fly again!! Until then I won’t coming back!

Visited as a family for food on a lovely sunny afternoon /evening. Very disappointed to be treated the way we were just because we weren't regulars. Ordered food in bar as instructed only to watch waitress then come and take the order of the table next to us. When our food arrived (after I'd been given cutlery and napkins to take out myself, again unlike the table adjacent to us) I asked if we could order some more drinks, only to be told that because I wasn't a regular I had to go in and order and pay for my drinks. On its own not a massive issue but to be told that in front of the fairly busy garden and patio was totally unprofessional. Was also told could only eat on the terrace but food was taken out to tables on the grass in the sun where I would have preferred to sit Food was good and setting is great but due to the rudeness and unprofessional attitude of the staff and being made to feel like a criminal who was going to do a runner just because I wasn't a regular left a very bitter taste and I will not be returning or recommending after this negative experience

New Ownership & New Management = Bad News Myself & my partner visited earlier this week following a fantastic meal & experience just after Christmas, but how things have changed! Firstly the menu advertised online didn’t match the one we got given, not a huge issue as neither of us are fussy eaters but the menu did seem somewhat limited and did lack choice, something we really enjoyed previously. The food we did have (Bread & Olives, followed by Sausage & Mash and the Burger) was good, just not quite as enjoyable as our last visit but still good quality! The biggest issue was the service, it wasn’t particularly busy but we struggled to find a member of staff for drinks when we wanted them, had to ask for sauces and also got told that we couldn’t have a cocktail when we asked, not too sure why. We did want to order a dessert but just felt we weren’t really that welcome, it’s a shame because previously we had a really good time & the staff were friendly. Just before paying & leaving we overheard another customer saying the place was being run by different people which explains the big difference between this visit and our last and this probably will be our last, unless the place does change again, what a shame.

We came here for my mother in laws birthday knowing they have apparently a really good gluten-free menu, but what they Don't tell you is they deduct food of your plate and still charge the same amount of money. I first asked for fish and chips in which the fish came in beer batter but then got informed it was without the batter so then o asked for the roast beef Sunday dinner but then also got informed it came without a Yorkshire pudding and stuffing 😡😡 the staff were very scarce and didn't even ask how the meal was going very disappointing and the furniture was extremely poor the table across from us we had to inform the gentleman not to sit on the bench as the wood was snapped underneath . Extremely disappointed

This was the first time we'd been to the pub since it has changed hands. The food was still really good BUT the service was so terrible it became like a comedy sketch show towards the end of the evening! After asking for a Bombay and tonic, I watched as the barmaid barely filled the measure with gin; so I basically had a tonic water. Then, we were told that we were 'sitting through there' and had to ask her to show us which table of about 15 she meant. They brought us water, but no glasses etc. They didn't really seem to have much waiting experience. We felt quite bad as they were apologetic, it just appeared that they had had little to no training really. When the food came (I ordered the mussels) I had to ask for a finger bowl. The waitress happily brought me one, and I plunged my fingers into it only to find that it was boiling water-ouch. The cheese came with a steak knife, which was odd, and the cheese board itself did not contain the Baron Bigod as advertised, but a Cornish Yarg that they didn't bother to tell us had been swapped in. We had a nice evening, and enjoyed the food, but the service let the experience down overall.

We had a sausage with bacon jam (yummy) and a BLT 👍 washed down with some Timothy Taylor. Great open log fire roaring added a great feel to this wonderful place. Loved it!!! Warning: new owners Horrible service. Staff disappeared for an hour and we had to search for them to buy more drinks. Clearly inexperienced staff in over their heads with a pub less than a tenth full. Half the furniture was broken and falling apart- take care sitting down especially in the window booths as they are cracked and literally falling apart. The only real positives were the location and company. I guess the new paint job inside was well done?

Went here for Sunday Lunch after a recommendation from a November visit. Couldn't have been more disappointed. Chip in glass, sparkling water flat...twice. Single gin and tonic £10 (we aren't in London!). Food : Gammon roast dinner at £20 was half fat, roast potatoes were just awful, veg were either totally undercooked and hard...or mushy. Yorkshire pudding was so burnt it disintegrated...honestly.... the replaced one was marginally better but still not great.... my husband never complains but said it was the worst meal we have had over the past year. Cauliflower cheese evidently tasted 'sour'. Being Gluten free was told couldn't have the Yorkshire Pudding which I guessed, couldn't have the black pudding roll, guessed that too, but just before meal actually arrived was told couldn't have the cauli cheese either! My chicken dinner was therefore just that... a piece of 'roast' chicken with soggy skin (supposed to be Chicken Supreme!), awful roast potatoes and veg and some red cabbage which was actually the nicest thing on the plate. After complaining about the whole thing we were offered 10% off the meal which on reflection we shouldn't have accepted as we still had a bill of over £50 for a roast dinner that was honestly barely edible. Interestingly the table of 4 who left half hour after we arrived also were offered 10% discount so guessing they had issues too! Obviously won't be going again, neither our friends and family, can't understand how anyone could leave a positive review of this. Did we just hit a really really bad day!? Sadly forgot to take a photo of YP... because seeing was believing! Pros - Service itself was fine.

Only minor niggle is the bar person forgot my glass of wine - which was surprising given we were the only ones in there.

We just had a birthday meal at this restaurant where the dining experience was deeply disappointing. The ordeal began with a starter of fresh-baked bread that was unexpectedly cold and undercooked. Although the accompanying soup was pleasant, the main course was a significant letdown. My order of a medium cooked fillet steak arrived overcooked, resembling burnt leather in texture almost like it had been ran over, and was so tough it was nearly impossible to cut. One thing for sure was it was not fillet steak. The second attempt to rectify this was two thin slices of steak stacked to mimic a thicker cut/fillet, but it was excessively salted and nothing but inedible where I had to send back my second plate of food and decide to just go without. While the drinks and my meal were removed from the bill, we still incurred a significant charge of nearly £90. My suggestion to the restaurant is to focus on the quality of food preparation. The establishment has a charming ambiance and an appealing menu, but the culinary execution does not justify the high prices. Hiring a skilled chef could greatly enhance the dining experience and better align with the pricing.

This was the worst pub meal I have ever had. Booked table in restaurant for 6pm. On arrival told restaurant was closed and we were shown to a small cold, dark room with 3 tables. Ordered Prosecco, it arrived warm and without fizz. The waitress said she would pour it into a colder glass. Still it wasn’t cold and still no fizz. £9. I didn’t drink it, too horrible. I ordered the soufflé. A grey, flabby, stretchy thing arrived in a sweet white sauce, quite inedible. They did deduct this from the bill. I ordered the burger. Slightly better though came with a burnt, acrid smell which was still on my hands when I got home. The burger seemed to have something of everything they had in the kitchen piled on to it, each concoction tasting sweet and unpleasant. When I eventually found the meat, it was ok apart from the acrid smell. The bun was very cold, had clearly just been taken out of the freezer when the order was given to the kitchen. I could not eat the meal. The waitresses were nice and pleasant and very apologetic. What has happened to The Martins Arms, or was this just a very bad night? Disappointing and infuriating in equal measure, why do food if you can’t get a competent chef?

Came here for Sunday lunch, the pub is in a lovely setting and nicely decorated inside. Whilst the food was nice enough I can't say that the price tag justifies it.

We always enjoy visits to this pub /restaurant - it’s my favourite and full of history and character. Beautiful garden as well; which is a great place to sit in the warmer weather. The food is lovely with a great selection - their fish & chips are spectacular! Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than some other places but in my opinion it is completely worth it.

Pretty pub in a quiet village setting. Lovely garden in the summer. Staff shortages are evident in their offhand attitude. Very good menu, but fairly pricey - at least £10 for a sandwich...but thick, nice fillings and served with chips and salad.

Stopped for impromptu tea with our three children (all under 9) early one evening. Sat in the bar rather than the restaurant. There were a handful of other customer as the place had only just opened. We thought the Martins Arms looked like a place worth stopping at as it had a large garden area. Perfect for the kids whilst dinner was prepared (we thought). We were soon advised though that the kids were only allowed outside if they 'walked' around (there was no one out there) and that it wasn't for playing in. So, despite being a relatively nice evening, the children spent most of the time inside. Later on, between dinner and dessert, we were playing rock, paper, scissors to keep the kids occupied (absent them being able to run off their energy outside) when a man I assume was the owner came over and asked us to keep the noise down. We weren't being loud, however there was only one other table occupied in the bar so there was not the normal ambient level of background noise. Also, we were in the bar! I wonder if the owner tells other (adult) customers to pipe down if they raise their voice beyond whisper. I guess not! To say we went in and spent north of £170 on an evening tea, you'd think the proprietors would be accommodating, but alas. Basically, if you want to take your kids out for food and are happy to communicate with them no louder than a whisper then this place is for you. For any other families who live in the real world, I'd probably give this place a miss.Despite above I must be fair and say the service was good, food allergies were accommodated, and the food was pretty good too (albeit I'm not sure I'd make a special journey on the basis of the food alone). It was just such a disappointment to be treated in such an infantilised way, especially when it was absolutely unnecessary. I normally only write reviews for extremes of experience, unfortunately this was at the wrong end of that spectrum.

Outstanding food & lovely surrounds, well worth a visit. A rare treat. As a dairy intolerant, I’m used to having. A limited menu choice. It was no problem here, the chef said he could adapt anything on the menu. We were there in a Sunday, sat outside in the lovely garden, service was excellent and the food was great, the “black pudding sausage roll” was delicious and unique. The veg was seasonal and fresh. A lovely lunch (and my cousin is a chef and very picky!!! And she was delighted too)

Came for dinner today and was very impressed with the place. We were friendly greated by the head waitress as we walked in and offered a Resturaunt, Bar or outdoor seat. On choosing outdoor we was told our drinks would be served at the table and we could pick any seat we wanted. The young waitress talked us through all the menu, recommendations and also answered any questions we had. I had the soup of the day and the Ploughmans with a side of truffle chips. The food was amazing (only slight downside was the chips were laced with garlic but it was only a very minor downside), the price for the place, the view and the food and drink was more than reasonable. The service was a little slow but it was dinner service and with only 2 staff on and a few people in I can let them off for that. Honestly dont get the previous reviews. They have either massively improved their service or something doesnt add up. Cant wait to go again.

After keeping out of everyone's way for about 18 months, we decided to go for a walk to Colston Bassett. I was not familiar with 'The Martins Arms' and could have walked right past had it not been for the smell of food and someone sitting near one of the windows which drew my attention to the interior. I asked my walking buddies if they would like lunch? "Where?" they asked. The Martin's Arms has only one sign on the end of the building which is surrounded by trees so you could easily miss it from the main road. We were walking from the lane behind so the sign was not visible and it could have been just another beautiful cottage. once inside you see a delightful, cosy setting. We asked to be seated outside and were led through to the garden. This is large and beautifully kept with good quality furniture. We sat down and were given menus displaying a small but select range of meals. Jake waited at our table and he could not have been more charming or helpful. I had a starter titled, 'Colston Bassett Mousse'. This was delightful and I would recommend trying it. My partner and her friend had sandwiches that were filled with quality ingredients and I just couldn't resist the fish and triple fried chips. It is such a standard order yet the taste, texture and quality of this meal was superb. I will be back to try other dishes on the basis of this alone. After this, we decided to try three different deserts which was a great decision. You can tell when a desert is just put together or if someone has prepared it with careful and deliberate decisions about its creation and all three were prepared by a skilled hand. Layers of flavors came through in each dessert which we all had a taste of. The owner of 'The Martin's Arms' has been there for 30 years and you can tell she is in complete control from the little desk behind the bar. This is not a pub to just go for a pint, although clearly, you can, but a beautiful setting for a romantic meal, friends visit, family gathering, simply beautiful. If you are visiting near to Colston Bassett then this has to be one of your places to eat out at least once but I bet you will go back for seconds. Thank you Lyn and team.

I am so glad we chose The Martin’s Arms....today was a difficult day as it was my late father’s birthday who only passed away a few months ago and we wanted to celebrate and remember somewhere that was peaceful and charming. Lovely Grade 2 listed pub and lovely garden, friendly staff, especially the waitress who is fairly new. We sat in the picturesque garden and ordered ordered from the pub menu .. starter, main and side to share and asked for they to come together, which they did. The Truffle & Parmesan chips are to die for. Great dessert & coffee menu too.Highly recommend and can’t wait to go back and try the A la Carte menu

Having just finished another amazing meal in the beautiful garden tonight we were directed to pay at the bar inside. We did as always have done before, walked into bar with our dog(there is no other access in or out). I popped to loo to then come out to find an incandescent spouse paying the bill and a random cyclist outside holding our dog for him. My husband had been very rudely told by the owner that he was not allowed the dog there. Even though that was the only way in or out and we also told to go in and pay the bill. Perhaps the owner can take a leaf out of the book of the amazing staff in this place, and also read How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie. We will still go back but will make sure we do not loiter with an animal as instructed.

My partner and I decided to book a table in the dining room after hearing from friends who had been to the Martin's Arms and couldn't praise the dining experience enough. We hadn't been out for a while and would always prefer to be recommended a place to eat. Our standards are pretty high and so were our expectations. We were expecting a fantastic experience and we were not disappointed! The Martin's Arms is very pretty. An large old white farm house from the outside would best describe it. Full of character and with the blossoming flowers framing the entrance. Inside is in keeping with the exterior. We were greeted at the door by friendly welcoming staff and after the mandatory registering our details (for Covid), we were asked if we'd like to eat this evening or have a drink in the garden. We explained that we'd booked and we were shown to the most delightful table for two in a cosy corner of the relaxed dining room.Upon being seated, we were given menus and a wine menu and the specials of the day were described. We took our time to look at the extensive wine menu and settled on a bottle of champagne which was promptly delivered complete with bucket of ice and two glasses. After being served and taking several minutes to choose our meals, we ordered our starters and mains.I have to say that the food was delicious! The staff were very attentive and not at all intrusive as we've experienced before at other restaurants. The frequency of being asked if we were enjoying our meal and if we'd like another drink and being left to enjoy our meal can be a fine balance! After our meal, we decided to have a drink outside in the garden. We asked about brandy and the very nice gentleman Jack who served us described in detail the subtle differences between the choices. We then were shown to the beautiful, green expansive garden. We found the whole experience very chilled and relaxed. It was a lovely intimate meal in a lovely setting at a beautiful location. We highly recommend the Martin's Arms and will be back very soon.Thank you to all the staff for making it such a wonderful experience.

After 30 years of being in hospitality business, never have I once written or complained in any restaurant, bar , pub,.. as I know that we all depend on good staff , good chefs , good suppliers .. and it’s hard to come by those now days .Many times I have been well looked after by Martins arms staff, proprietors , village residents. Not that good service or food was always the best but I understood industry! For that reason , I returned and spend and tipped staff even if they didn’t know how to open btl of wine , even if they were not trained or expected to do job without any prior experience.I have been trough all of that myself.Even my dog was looked after well, my times . That was true hospitality. But, I will not be called lier if colleague of mine decided to put her experience on to this site .I called , instead of writing on to Trip advisor site, called the owner who I respect for many years to express my disappointment NOT in the way that I wanted to complain but the way to say “ Jack , you were out of order”We arrived at 1.37pmWe ordered snacks and btl of your wine at 2.10We asked for the second btl of wine at 2.50pm and the bill in the same time NO ISSUES OR COMMENT WAS MADE BY YOUR STAFF!!!They were pleasantly surprised when I left 10% tip and paid and I said “ if you are done don’t wait for us , I am happy to finish wine and leave trough the gates , as many times you made no issue with this “Instead at 3.05pm you come out from 5 meters distance shouting that I can’t stay , you have staff to pay , and you took second btl of wine back , asked members of staff to refund me , and you were still opened as you said you don’t close till 3.30pm !!!!At 3.05 pm you asked me to take my btl of wine with me or you will take it back !!We still had food in front of us !! ??? For you to call me “ lier “ Shame on you sir , I felt embarrassed for that little girl who I rewarded with some money for service even if she was just learning !!As we left , you still had people in other room , one guy in the bar drinking beer and I said “ you will never see penny of mine ever again”It’s time for you to let it GO !We all make mistakes , we all have bad days Point is , being able to acknowledge it ! That’s what makes big person big and the small one just a money grabber!Edin Gondzic

The preceding poor reviews sadly are correct! We experienced a very fragmented service but fortunately the food, when it did eventually come, was lovely. After being shouted at from behind the bar to scan the covid QR code (which I was in the process of doing) we got ushered through to the garden and then we were forgotten about. Couples arriving after us got served and we had to ask for drinks, menus, chase desserts - totally sloppy. It’s a competitive world out there and unless industry accolades are backed up by both great food and slick customer service in equal measure then the Martins Arms will suffer. Getting frustrated I looked at trip advisor reviews while sat in the garden and sadly all were true.

I have never through all my travels experienced such disgraceful hospitality! Worse, is the owner, Jack, never acknowledged or greeted me before yelling across the garden that the restaurant was closing and we should leave. We chose this restaurant to conclude our business deal, we ordered a few dishes and notably expensive wine to celebrate, but sadly Jack’s churlish behaviour ruined what could have been a good experience. We will never return and my colleagues will hear of this appalling experience.
