I have just visited Marshalls for a take away cod and chips. It was delicious, a huge meaty piece of cod, great crispy batter and lovely hand cut chips. Kudos to the staff and their hard work. I recommend Marshalls to anybody visiting Tynemouth.

We took shelter from a storm in here & enjoyed visiting. They were short staffed so there was no table service at the time. We ordered & paid for our food at the counter & had to collect it from there when it'd been cooked. We had chip stotties, battered king prawns & a battered sausage. All were freshly cooked to order & tasty. The floors were very slippery due to the wet so take care. They have a great selection of fish on offer, including seasonal catches.

We visited today for the first time, there was a little confusion regarding having to use a different entrance to be able to order food however once that was clarified the service was quite quick considering how busy the place was, I found the staff to be quiet friendly we ordered haddock and I must say it was definitely not the best I have had, however I would try it again but probably not the haddock.

One of the best places to have a traditional Fish & Chips meal in the UK. I also ordered a king prawns meal which was so delicious and crunchy. Some members of staff should be more trained on the cashier when dealing with the orders, other than that, you can’t fault this place. Highly recommend trying it.

Best fish and chips I have had in ages, including those I have had in Whitby. I like cod, lightly battered and well done and it was just as I asked. The fish was beautifully white and tasty. All fish was being freshly cooked to order, which I liked. No table service, but that was a minor thing. Also overcharged, but that was soon rectified when I pointed this out. Will definitely return to Marshall's when I am in Tynemouth again.

I've been an infrequent customer across the decades as don't live too local but always loved Marshall's due to being taken by both sets of Grandparents in the 1970s/ 80s. I visited today and was sad to see there was no longer service in the restaurant. I asked which fish was ready and the answer was 'not sure, but it could be cod or haddock'. Ordered 2 x mystery fish and chips with 2 teas and a fruit shoot. £28 odd. The chips were fab but the fish was overheated and dry. I complained discreetly and the manager quickly had our orders changed and the new fish looked much better. It was better but not brilliant. Sad to see the place like this - now just a touristy bog standard food provider. I can't see us returning. Initial service 5/10 Service after complaint 10/10 Chips 8/10 First fish 4/10 Second fish 7/10

This place has never changed in the 30odd yrs . Tiny narrow passage to left of buildings for take away and as usual was 10 deap . The only thing I witnessed was a person very badly on their feet coming into the sit down but for take away , They ended up not getting anything as the queue was too long for them to stand and the position of the staff meant we could not get attention to get them served another way. (3.5 stars but I'm being nice) Tasty enough fish and chips. But the service was mediocre, and the counter is very cramped at the end of a long narrow corridor (make sure you don't try to go in the front door as it's locked!). The price was fair these days at £10.50 or so for a 'standard' cod and chips, but 50p for a tiny tomato ketchup was a bit steep.

Thankfully we chose the correct way to enter (side door/ long corridor). Those coming via the main entrance were being barked at to walk round and use the other door, where they fell to the back of the queue. Found cheerless atmosphere, with impression they wanted you to just hurry up, order, and get out. I told my two children to go & wait back outside with husband as I didn’t like the vibe. Ordered two kids meals, and was promptly confronted by girl on counter that I was not under 16 so couldn’t order them. Had to explain myself (for a moment thought I may have to drag kids back inside to prove myself). Despite high prices was still charged extra for ketchup, extra for fork, bag etc (what next, extra for drawing breath inside their shop, extra for a twist of lemon on my £10 fish!!??). Ordered fish n chips and other bits which came in separate trays. When I politely asked for a box (as it formed a meal for my husband and I didn’t want it set out in separate trays along the sea wall, like tapas for the seagulls) was refused unless I was willing to pay extra, despite already spending a daft amount of money on fish n chips. When I raised this, was told, “sorry, computer says no”( otherwise phrased as, sorry , our boss has told us we can’t do this). I appreciate not the staff’s fault per se. Managers/owners need to give their heads a wobble re accommodating service. Otherwise, have given a star for serving warm, edible food.

Me and my boyfriend had a cheeseburger and chips and a cheese and onion pattie and chips. The chips felt like they were undercooked, were tasteless and may as well have had no salt and vinegar on them. There was also random bits of batter in my chips, which clearly didn't come from my cheese and onion pattie. It was soggy, and was also tasteless. I put it in the bin. My boyfriend's cheeseburger consisted of two beef patties, deep fried with a slice of cheese in between them. I have never seen a burger made like that, even in a fish and chip shop. He ate it because he was hungry but it just tasted of oil and grease. It made him feel sick. To top it off, the oil tasted like old oil. Next time we visit tynemouth we will be sure to avoid this chippy, and go to subway instead.

Went with my daughter and ordered two small cod bites, was told small meals were only available to people under 16. Changed order to one meal in that case and went without, can't understand in what world that makes better business sense for them, or why someone with a small appetite can't just order a smaller portion of something. Daughter left a decent amount of the fish, didn't seem particularly fresh, chips weren't great either.

I've been coming here with my children since they were little (so 20 years!). Now I live in Canada and have found it IMPOSSIBLE to get fish and chips like on our own east coast. I was visiting my youngest at Christmas and one of the first things I did was take them here to see if the fish and chips still tastes as good. It does! OK, when you walk in, it's basic. You stand in a queue in a long, tiny hall, pay and then move into the next room, which is all plastic chairs and basic cutlery. Within 10 minutes, your steaming hot fish and chips arrives and it does not disappoint. Crispy, fluffy fish, cooked perfectly (haddock and chips) and PROPER chips, not soggy, disappoint fries, which is what I'm used to in Canada! I must admit, the staff seemed miserable compared to how I remember them, but then they were working over Christmas and I bet they're not getting paid much. Overall, though, the food is fantastic and even though the surroundings are basic, you don't care when you can get fish and chips as good. There are other places nearby, but it's not the same kind of food - nowhere near as tasty.

Marshall’s hasn’t been the best fish and chips in tynemouth for years however I still always went for the nostalgia of the location to me going with my parents as a kid. However recently the attitude of the staff has left a poor taste in my mouth. They don’t want to be there, they aren’t polite or friendly and is a painful experience more times than not. Every time I go in the place it’s dead. Such a shame to see such an iconic establishment go like this. They’ve also started to use a different type of peppercorn in the mushy peas and it’s tastes horrid, you can’t even taste the peas and they’ve made it sweet. Absolute shambles

Always a queue. They used to use vegetable oil but now switched to beef dripping which means pescatarians cannot have. Many chippys in the North East do this maybe since Ukraine or covid, so it's a struggle to find one that frys in vegetable oil but Chip and Fish in Benton are one of the few who still fry in vegetable oil

Bought fish and chips here recently and although the fish was a decent size, I was genuinely shocked at just how small the portion size of the chips that went with it was. The whole thing was served in a box that had two sections to it and meant there was nowhere near enough room for a suitable portion of chips within the box. Disappointed to say that what we got did not represent value for money, Marshalls used to be somewhere that you could expect to get a meal which was as good, if not better, as others in the area, however the new boxes the food is served in suggests this no longer the case. Also the place seemed understaffed and I felt sorry for the ladies who were serving the night we visited.

Had my Sunday lunch their today with another family member, we found it was reasonably priced and was really nice, giant Yorkshire puds were 👌👌👌🤌🏽🤌🏽

We popped in for lunch today, Fantastic menu, not sure if it's changed hands but so much nicer inside. We both chose pininis and they were delicious. Well recommended.
