Stumbled over this place whilst in Whitley bay and wanted Sunday Lunch, in the middle of a housing estate so hard to find and I was a bit reluctant as it looked like a beer drinkers pub only. How I was wrong, one of the best Sunday lunches I have had in a long time. Service was great and we all left happy, we have made a space in the Callander to go once a month

I never really give reviews but felt I had to as I have never been as disappointed as I was on Sunday We booked a table for Sunday lunch at 3pm. The pub was starting to get busy due to the match being on TV but there was an obvious massive lack of staff meaning a long wait to get served We ordered our food and waited over an hour for the food to come and then to be told there was no roast potatoes left and asked how they can compensate this which we requested for additional meat which obviously fell on deaf ears. The meat was more than well done (belly pork) The gravy was like water Very disappointing

A pub basically in the middle of a housing estate, not somewhere you'll pass on the way to another destination. Otherwise, a good pub to visit on an afternoon. Carpark at the front, touch pad inside on the wall. Friendly staff, with good seating areas. A very family orientated pub. Some outdoor seating and wheelchair accessible. Menu is mainly burgers.

** DRIVERS BEWARE ** Spent an hour here on Monday 4th March before we went to pick up a takeaway.. it was dark outside and there was literally 6 men in pub for their Quiz Night… not once were told by the clearly bored bar staff that we had to register our car whilst we sat there… we had been at Christmas and also Fireworks night for drinks and this car parking farce - was NOT in place at those times…. Staff should have made it very clear that things had changed with their car parking instead of taking our money and then leaving us to receive threatening Civil Enforcement letter through the door ! We have to pay £60 within 7 days (letter dated 12 march arrived with us 17 march) or fine would go up to £100 To say we are disgusted by this sneaky underhand fines to people popping in for drinks who are already stung at the bar by the much higher prices than other local pubs - the car parking con, is just the final straw ! If the pub valued their customers they would make double sure that customers were aware of the change, when at the bar - clearly they are not concerned about upsetting the local pub goers… WE WONT EVER RETURN TO THIS PUB AND WILL ENSURE EVERYONE WE KNOW, DOES THE SAME… Shame on you Kittiwake !!!!

Didn't eat here but visited for the first time in Oct 23. Nice experience until i got a £100 fine fir parking out front. Apparently you have to register at the bar, we had no idea! I refused to pay Civil Enforcement Ltd as I could prove that we had been in the pub through our receipts. They refused to rescind the fine. Now they want to go to court. I don't know how a local business can operate in this way. We live locally but I won't be back, absolutely livid! UPDATE the owners have intervened and resolved the situation for which I am grateful. As such the rating is now solely based on my experience in the pub 🙂

Dodgy car park at the front run by Civil Enforcement Limited. The owners of the Kittiwake must be aware of this as presumably it is their land. I parked here, had no idea you had to register. I got a fine which I contested as I could prove that we had been in the pub. They reduced the fine but didn't waive it. I refused to pay and now they are taking it to debt agency. I've always liked this pub ever since I used to live in Whitley lodge many moons ago. It's still a lovely pub...I was here on the 29th of October 2023 for my daughter's 31st birthday. I drove over and parked in the pubs own car park. I had a lovely 3 hours there before leaving and headed off to work as I was working night shift that night. I've just received a parking charge for a hundred pounds...apparently I hadn't put my car registration in a machine they have in the bar (I had no idea I had to) I'm expecting another one to come through as my son wanted to test drive my new car so he left in my car then came back in to park in the same space before I eventually left for work. It's really hard to see this as anything less than a "money grab" and I'm fuming that we as a family spent around a hundred pounds that evening and I'm going to be stung for another £60-£100 (maybe x2?)

You get a good portion the meat is not skimped it’s thick enough to be able too taste what you are eating and meat is lovely and tender and you also have a nice choice and the amount of lovely fresh vegetables with a nice gravy not forgetting the Yorkshire pudding. The food is delicious. Will see you again soon. Thank you so much. Christine.

I recently spent several hours drinking with friends (8 of us in total) in the Kittiwake and at least 4 of these live nearby and use it as their local hence us meeting there. My wife didn’t join us as she had a splitting headache but she did kindly agree to collect me and a my friend when we were ready to leave. She arrived 5-10 minutes early and admittedly we were another 5-10 minutes while we finished our drinks and said our goodbyes. So several days later we received a parking charge notice for the 15-20 minutes that my wife was waiting for us in our car. The parking demand is for £100 but reduced to £60 if you pay before 14 days and if you appeal the parking charge you waive your right to the reduced amount! One of the guys (a local) who I was with that afternoon /evening graciously tried to plead my case with the bar management and even sent an email to the person/people that operates the car park. So my plea of innocence via my friend fell on deaf ears, very disappointing to say the least. I find it very hard to believe you can spend several hours and a considerable amount of money behind the bar of a public house and then be charged a further £60.00 for a parking discretion that could and was easily explained. Shame on you Kittiwake, your management and whoever runs your car park.

Food was very poor, everything was extremely salty and due to that was not enjoyable. The mince and dumplings stated it came with diced vegetables, but these were mixed in with the mince and I got two cubes of carrot, terrible for £11 as it was spread thinly across the plate so it appeared to be a bigger portion than it was. A great pub for drinks and sport, but I won't be returning for food. Staff were given feedback and told about the issues in a polite and nice manner, but they did nothing but apologise when issues were raised, in my eyes when there are issues, more can be done to ensure a customer returns. Bad customer service in my eyes.

I have quite a few allergies eg dairy, and came to the Kittiwake for a sunday dinner, had an awful encounter with the chef who came out to talk to me about accommodations to my food. The chef proceeded to tell me how butter “isn’t really dairy” and asked me a few times if I am really allergic to it, as if I was lying, and told me he didn’t think butter counted as dairy so I could have it. In the end he believed me , which he should have straight away, and he was attitudey and quite rude. For a chef to not know about allergies and not know that butter IS dairy, is insane and I will not be returning.

My family and I visited The Kittiwake for an early evening dinner the other night, keen to sample their newly established kitchen offering; we’ve lived on the doorstep of this pub for many years, but surprisingly the Kittiwake has always failed to step up to the bar regarding offering quality pub/bistro food to the folk around the Whitley Lodge area. The cutlery was dumped in a clanking pile in the middle of the table, and the menu is on the expensive side: 12/14 quid mark for most of the dishes. Three of the five of us took the Chicken dishes all of which were unfortunately rather let down by the betrayal of the sauce with its the unmistakable origins in re-hydrated packet soup! The pizza looked classy on the plate, but was served clay-cold. The other dish - the Burger, bore only a passing resemblance and a weak comparison to many for which you’d pay 12 quid on the high street; the acrid taste of the charred bread bun pervaded almost every mouth full! no garnish, and a puny portion of fries shoved sideways into a cold earthenware pot.Sorry Kittiwake - we do genuinely hope that these are merely teething pains - but there is a lot to do wrt. value for money!

Lovely local shame the dogs are not allowed in the main bar like they used to be.

We turned up on Sunday without booking. The staff could not have been more accommodating. The service was fantastic, the food wonderful and excellent value. We will definitely be going back.

Not a bad little pub, with a good range of beers, pool table and a jukebox. The toilets could do with a freshening up (especially in the bar area) and it's a shame they don't take card payments, although there is a cash machine over the road.

Booked a room for two nights, arrived last night to the whole place shut! I want a refund! We had to book into another hotel. Really not happy after a five hour journey
