Marmion House in Portsmouth

We recently visited the restaurant, and while the atmosphere and service were excellent, the food was quite disappointing. The dishes arrived surprisingly fast, which made us suspect they weren’t freshly prepared. Unfortunately, our suspicions were confirmed—the food lacked depth and flavour, tasting as if it had been frozen and reheated. While everything looked great visually, the taste didn’t live up to expectations. Given the presentation, we were hoping for much more. I appreciate the effort put into the service and setting, but for the price and expectations, the food quality needs significant improvement.

This place is Michellin Star worthy in a heart beat!!! Food is legit amazing.....and I mean amazing!!! If this by the end of 2025 isn't a 'must go' place in Portsmouth, then it's a travesty!!! The decor is warm and inviting, staff amazing and prices fantastic!!! Literally faultless on every level!!! Highlight for me was the pork belly which is the best I've ever had (and I'm 44) If your a foodie and haven't been there yet....shame on you!!!!

Deserves the 5* reviews. We had 5 small plates (3 would have been enough for the two of us. They and not so small 😀), a bottle of wine and medium glass of red and it came to £75. Food was brilliant, service the same.

This is a lovely bar & restaurant. The owners work hard to look after their custom. Whether it’s drinks, a small bite or a full meal you will always receive a warm welcome, food is delicious & portions are of a good size

A large group of us came to Marmion House for the live soul music on Wednesday. Wow! One of the best nights, music, food I have had in ages. We ordered loads of small plates- absolutely incredible!! The staff were so welcoming and friendly, making us their favorite cocktails. What a gem this place is! We will definitely be returning!

Absolutely amazing evening at this hidden gem! We booked to see lukebassettmusic play and wow he blow us away he is the next be star ⭐️ fantastic voice honestly! Whole ambience of pub, staff amazing very attentive and so lovely! Also food was exceptional, will definitely be back highly recommend xxx

We’ve been into Marmion House on 3 occasions. Impromptu lunch, Sunday roast and Dinner. Every single time the staff have been amazing, especially with our young son, super accommodating, the food is fantastic. Camden Hells Lager on top to boot, please never change this! We will always recommend and come back time after time. Can’t wait for the next visit very soon!

This bar & restaurant is suitable for drinks & snacks with family & friends or as a couple. The beer & wine is very good, the snacks & tapas are fresh & a good size. Although with have not had a full meal yet, we are looking forward to trying their Sunday lunch in the next few weeks.

Came here with family for Sunday lunch and was hugely impressed. Great atmosphere with superb food and wonderful staff. A lovely restaurant, which has the relaxed and comfortable feeling of a high quality brasserie. Will definitely be back and very highly recommended.

We have had 2 roasts here in the space of a couple of months. Both absolutely outstanding. Tonnes of meat, veg, gravy and just everything 10/10. Service has always been brilliants and the vibe is lovely. We consider ourselves roast enthusiasts and this is the best we’ve had in a while between Portsmouth and Chichester. We can’t wait to come back and try something else on the menu

We popped in on the off chance and had a gorgeous lunch comprising of small plates, cheese soufflé to chicken and beef dishes ; without exception the food was hot, tasty and flavoursome . Excellent meal with wonderful service Had salt and pepper squid to share. Then each chose the sea bass with seafood risotto. Add a side of steamed green vegetables. Heaven Definitely recommend

So pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The black pudding was outstanding as well as the chocolate tart. I loved the burrata salad and the beetroot carpaccio. We had five dishes for the two of us (excluding desert) which was more than enough. As the very friendly server already recommended.

Quietly excellent. Food and service are understated, unfussy, good value, and really good. Two tapas each and dessert made for an ample meal. Burrata with blood orange was fresh and zingy. Contrasted with the conforting unctuousness of the arrancini balls and pork belly. The chicken tikka was flavoursome but a little dry. Banana brioche bread and butter pudding was deeply satisfying, and the chocolate tart was very good too.

Visited the Marmion House for dinner having been many months ago for a successful brunch. Not sure what has happened here but the food was poor this time around. Menu was small plates and fairly extensive. We had a mixture of things, some of which were inedible (dry as a bone chicken and gelatinous undercooked prawns) and others just very average. Considering the cost per small plate is between £8-£11 each the standard of the food was really disappointing. Some dishes were potentially good but just hadn’t quite been executed well enough (some served hot, others less than like warm, some dishes seasoned others not etc). I’m not a fussy eater but really battled to enjoy it. On the positive side the service was swift and friendly, and when we fed back about the two worst dishes these were taken off the bill immediately with zero fuss. Lots of potential here as the building is beautiful and the atmosphere warm, but wouldn’t come back unless something serious changed in the kitchen. Hopefully over time it will improve as this had seemed a welcome edition to the Southsea restaurant scene.

Went to The Marmion House on Friday 31/05/24 with my wife and mother in law. The staff were excellent gave us a really great table, excellent choice of food on the menu and drinks. The food was absolutely fantastic and we all enjoyed our lunch very much, would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and relations. 5 ⭐️

I recently had my 1st and 2nd visits to the Marmion House in quick succession. Both were great. On the 1st for my birthday I enjoyed 3 small plates. The cheese soufflé was light and delicious with the right amount of spinach. The tempera prawn/onion bhaji/yogurt was very nice and the belly pork bites were sift and tasty. This was all followed by the bread and butter pudding which maybe the best I've tried. The other dishes (risotto and steak) when down well with the others too. I then visited for a Sunday roast and again the quality was high (Yorkshire pudding a little too big for me). Perfectly pink beef, plenty of sides and the mango cheesecake again on top of it game. Highly recommend.

Had a delicious lunch at Marmion as a family. We adults enjoyed a mix of small plates - the burrata and pork belly were both excellent. The kids meals (chicken goujons and chips) went down well with our children. Service was very friendly, and super efficient. Will definitely visit again when in the area.

Attended the Marmion House last night and have to say the Steak is excellent!

Dined with a larger group and had the best experience. All staff were friendly and accommodating, while the food was delicious. We had a wide range of dishes due to the size of our group and everyone left very happy (and very full)! Drinks were also fabulous. Some of us had wine and beer while others enjoyed a range of cocktails. 10/10 place to go and we’ll definitely all be back! Thank you <3

By far the best restaurant and food in Southsea and surrounding areas, I eat out weekly and to be honest was disheartened with all of the restaurants I had tried in Southsea but having now been to the Marmion house my faith in excellent home made food has been restored! 10/10 I will be back soon! Wonderful happy attentive service, led by great owner. Good home cooked tasty food at a pretty decent price point Seating is well planned and not too crowded Booking would be recommended Location is great for a 10 minute stroll to the sea and shops closer Wine list is well thought out, an Oakey chardonnay would be a welcome addition.

We enjoyed a family lunch at Malmion on Sunday, prior to Christmas panto. Roasts were just outstanding, the bread and butter pudding was absolutely amazing (I keep telling people about it) Service was great and had a lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back. Thanks very much!

An absolute TASTE SENSATION!!! We shared the 5 plates, all wonderfully presented, incredible taste combinations, plenty to share and a fantabulous Pinot to wash it all down. Beautifully decorated inside, can't wait to go back in a couple of weeks - OUTSTANDING - hooray :)

My partner and I have been here a couple of times and absolutely love it! Recently went for the roast and I can safely say it was the best roast we’ve ever had! The beef and the lamb were both of amazing quality. The service is very friendly and accommodating and overall great value for money. Would highly recommend!

A group of eight of us settled comfortably in the back, enjoying the warm atmosphere and attentive service that was always there when needed but never intrusive. Our knowledgeable waitress, with a friendly demeanour, guided us through the menu, pointing out the satisfying portions of the small plates. Following her advice, I started with a delightful cheese soufflé, setting the tone for a lovely meal. For the main event, I couldn't resist the allure of the Friday and Saturday special, featuring a heavenly seafood and crayfish risotto topped with a perfectly panfried sea-bass fillet. To cap off this fantastic lunch, I indulged in a decadent chocolate bar with raspberries for dessert – a sweet conclusion to a symphony of flavours. What impressed me most was the efficiency of the kitchen – each dish, cooked from scratch, arrived promptly at our table, showcasing both quality and quick service for all eight of us. The restaurant's ambiance added to the overall experience, creating an intimate setting for our gathering. Marmion House struck the perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. Beautiful restaurant and a hidden gem in Portsmouth/ Southsea. Small plates work out very well priced (we had 3 as a starter) and I had the risotto which was delicious. Steak came out a bit overcooked but was sorted quickly and without fuss! Owner was friendly and super helpful and blonde waitress (cant remember her name unfortunately) was fab. Will definitely return!

A great mix of small plate style food or a small but delightful large plate menu, including a fish of the day option. Service is excellent, the staff are chatty and friendly with good knowledge of the food. Wine menu has a reasonable selection of good wines. Overall, one of my favourite places to eat in Southsea.

Party of 11. We all had the small plates and honestly couldn’t fault any of them. Highly recommend the chicken tikka and duck parcels. The beetroot was delicious and really refreshing. I love their rosè wine. Staff were excellent and very friendly. Other customers engaged with us which gave it a lovely familiar feel. The decor is comfortable whilst being modern. Highly recommend this restaurant.

I have a very weird diet and I can say that when I called up before they were so happy and accommodating! I was quite nervous as I don’t like a fuss and they made me feel so at ease, even when it was served it was just perfect and to top it off it was an exceptional dish!! Thank you so much for this experience! I’m definitely coming back!!!

Went for a Sunday roast. Firstly, the surroundings are very nice, welcoming smile and generally nice ambience. Plenty of wines to choose from from either by glass or bottle, and a decent selection of larger bottles or tap. I opted for the roast beef and my husband had the roast pork. I’m afraid I have to agree that it was very underwhelming. The beef had very little flavour, but thankfully wasn’t tough or dry. The Yorkshire pudding was hideous- completely cooked to a crisp, an inedible. It was like one of those pre-made things you’d expect at a 2nd rate carvery. You can’t charge £21 for a roast beef dinner- to tell me you can’t make a Yorkshire pudding! The vegetables was the best part of the dinner, and very tasty. The pork was ,sadly, very dry. So with another hideously dried out Yorkshire and the dry pork, made for a completely below par meal. Roast potatoes- 3 tiny ones and not roasted for long enough . That said, the service was very good but unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend it fir the roast but I’ve heard good things about the small plates.

Really good Sunday lunch. Choice of meats or vegetarian option for traditional Sunday roast. Welcoming reception with attentive service. Glad we booked as it was busy with people being turned away. Food is good quality and cooked well. My daughter was poorly and the team boxed up her whole dinner to take away- this was a nice touch. Would definitely eat there again and try their evening menu

First visit today to celebrate Father’s Day, it was amazing!!! Beautiful restaurant, everyone was so welcoming, the roast dinner was the best I’ve had in a very long time!!! They were great with my daughter as she won’t eat veg, they were more then happy to give her a extra Yorkshire pud instead, she also loved the desert! I will be recommending this restaurant and I can’t wait to come back and try other things on the menu, thank you for a wonderful afternoon

Absolutely stunning place first time we have visited, it looked so nice from outside and even better inside staff so friendly and helpful went with my sister for a coffee and breakfast had the eggs Benedict (unfortunately we just tucked right in so no picture of the breakfast) but it looked amazing and it was delicious. Will definitely be visiting again!

We visited the Marmion House for the first time at the weekend, knowing very little about it other than that the menu looked great. We were delighted to find out that the food also looked and tasted great to match! We did the 5 small plates deal, plus 2 desserts and that was plenty enough for us to feel like we'd eaten well. The only minor criticism I'd have is that the poached egg with the black pudding didn't have a runny yolk, but it was still so delicious. Everything else was flawlessly presented and full of flavour. The restaurant was busy and had a nice atmosphere, and the staff were really friendly and fun. We will definitely be returning!
