Markyate Spice in Dacorum

Both main courses were incredibly sweet, the peshwari naan was filled with sugar. Very hard to eat. Something is wrong at Spice. Rice was fine, the plain naan was burnt. Very unsuccessful meal.

I ordered my meal on the Markayate spice website, after one hour it had not been delivered so I called the restaurant to be told that they had no record of my order , I had received acknowledgment of my payment. I asked for a refund. The gentleman at the other end of the phone told me I could contact the restaurant tomorrow and speak with the manager as he was not on duty at that point I explained that that was nor acceptable and he told me that this was the last thing he needed as the restaurant was busy . He reluctantly took my order again and said I would have to show my confirmation e mail to the driver . The food turned up a hour and a quarter later cold .

We had a fantastic meal here on Saturday evening. We hadn’t booked a table. The restaurant was very busy even though it was early evening. We had a 3 year old and a 7 year old with us. They enjoyed the lamb korma. My prawn dish was superb. Our daughter had the monkfish dish. She thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn’t feel bloated the next morning, unlike some Indian restaurant meals. In all a great meal with excellent service. Can highly recommend.

Pretty poor takeaway today. Two of the dishes were okay, most were not up to standard. Chicken was overcooked and dry, lamb was was hard and had a weird flavour, both sauces were floating in oil/ghee and not particularly tasty; rice had clumps of undercooked rice in it; naan was chewy on top and hard underneath; that green dipping sauce was just nasty; veg samosa was all potato. Onion bhaji and cauliflower side dish were however delicious!! This place used to be so good - something has gone badly wrong here.

We ordered a takeaway delivery online for a delivery at 7:30 New Year’s Eve. They did not let us down, the delivery was on time and the food was delicious and went down a treat to help us celebrate New Year’s Eve in style. The downside is I forgot to take pictures of it . Keep up the great work guys and thanks you . We have eaten in the restaurant in several occasions and the takeaway food is as good as eating in the restaurant. We definitely recommend markyate spice to anyone who loves great service and delicious food.

Terrible. Waited approx 1.5 hours for delivery, food arived lukewarm, and everything much too salty. It was practically inedible. Lamb was tough, chicken was dry, and everything literally had no taste except salt. Will never order from here again.

We booked our table online and had to cancel due to my grandson being I’ll , so we rebooked for the following week, the staff were happy with the fact that we phoned them to cancel and rebook as so many people don’t let them know. On our arrival we were greeted with a smile and was lead straight to our table. We received the menu and asked what we wanted to drink while browsing through the menu, we had popadoms and chutneys, then I had vegetable pakora and my daughter had onion Bahjis and number 1 Granson (13) asked me what should he have , I recommended what I normally have , prawn on puri . All the starters were very nice so onto our main dishes, chicken rogan /lamb rogan and chicken kyhaber . We also had side dishes of saag aloo/ mushroom bahji / saag paneer accompanied with mushroom rice and keema naan and peshwari naan . I know this sounds a lot of food for 3 people even if one of us is only 13 , but he ate like a grown man 😁 and it was banquet night so smaller portions, but there was plenty for us . Sorry about quality of photos as they don’t do the food the justice it deserves. Well done to all the team .👍

This restaurant is on the high street in the village of Markyate just off the A5 From the minute you enter the restaurant we got a warm friendly welcome , team were really pleasant and helpful Very clean and comfortable setting within the restaurant , tables well spaced from each other Extensive menu available We visited on a Wednesday evening , taking advantage of their midweek meal deal Food was all freshlly cooked nd piping hot Portion sizes extremely generous Food was beautifully spiced and presented Excellent valve for money Highly recommend and will definitely visit again Team openly offer and encourage you to take home uneaten Food Waste not want not !

l ate here on 29th October, there was 4 of us and the Bald waiter who cannot understand english was very rude and spoke to us very bad, also they do not have enough staff as the other two waiters were struggling. Used to be a very nice place when Uddin was there. Gone downhill and not enough staff!!!

Popped in last night - very busy all round with delivery and people in the restaurant - so everything took a little bit longer than normal - however service was still attentive and good ( despite being a bit stretched ) - food always good here - would always recommend.

I visited yesterday with family, one of which is coeliac, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. They spent time checking ingredients to ensure they were gluten free and explaining they are very careful to avoid cross contamination during cooking. The food was also delicious and I couldn’t fault any aspect of our night out.

Food is not back at its pre-lockdown quality, but still more than acceptable. Good service and a nice environment. Slightly cramped around the table. Very good place to get a meal though.

I visited recently with friends. The restaurant is nicely decorated, the service was good and the staff are friendly. My one negative comment was the lack of chicken in my main course, lots of delicious sauce but hardly any chicken. My fellow diners all said exactly the same re the lack of chicken in their meals. I am not sure if it was just a blip, but this is something the restaurants need to readdress.

There were six of us for my birthday meal and we were not disappointed with the food and the attentiveness of the staff, we were sat at the table within minutes of arrival and allowed to settle in and study the menu. The food was as second to none as was the service. My wife and daughter in law don’t like spicy food so they had chicken shashlik and they both cleared their plates. I had my favourite starter ( prawn purée) and my son had an Indian mixed starter and my 12 year old grandson had a different type of mixed starter which were all demolished. My main was chicken Shimla with keema rice and keema nann and sag aloo. I could go on and on with all the other dishes that my family had but it would take too long . I definitely recommend this restaurant for a visit, I don’t think anyone would be disappointed. Well done to the whole team . 👍👍

My family and i went to the restaurant tonight for the 1st time and we were very happy with the food and the great service from the waiter. He was very polite and friendly. The food was hot and very delicious. We will definitely go there again.

Takeaway absolutely brilliant yet again on Sunday 21/02/2021 the food was very good and the delivery service was on time as usual and would definitely recommend. Can’t wait until lockdown is over so we can go to the restaurant for a sit down meal in their lovely surroundings.

Had previously ordered various takeaways and sit down meals, but had a terrible experience with our last takeaway. We ordered a vegetable korma, but a lamb korma arrived. As vegetarians we weren’t able to eat this. Fair enough mistakes happen, but we have phoned and emailed Markyate Spice for a refund. Despite repeated attempts we haven’t received a refund.

We were visiting family and went here on a recommendation and omg! Food is amazing and so very good! Very well managed through COVID-19 and very reasonably priced!

Unfortunately this restaurant does not keep up the good standard as dining in. We always visit Markyate Spice for our Curry but I am really considering going again, Since ordering a take way last Friday I am still waiting for the Manager to call me back to discuss my missing food and why my food took 2 hours to be delivered - I am so disappointed :-( - As I have not heard anything from anyone at Markyate Spice for nearly a week I will be contacting Trading Standards!This is not how customer should be treated!

excellent Indian restaurant great food very attentive friendly staff what we could not eat we took home and there was no issue there unlike some restaurants that charge you for containers ,i will go there again and again.

This is one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to for a while. Great food. Good atmosphere. Good staff and reasonably priced. Visiting friends in the village for an evening and we went here. Shared all the courses and not one dish would have been a disappointment. Strongly recommend and then afterwards (and/or before!) going to ‘The Local’ pub just up the road. Great place as well.

Went last Sunday, not too busy, very attentive service, authentic Bangladesh dishes including some specialist fish, extensive menus, great beer selection, king prawns sizzler superb, tandori Chicken best ever had, all the accompaniment Tarca shall, allow gobi, garlic Mann etc, etc, all arrived for us together, very comfortable seating, and bless they gave my father in law a bottle of Proceco as it was his birthday, also offered drinks on the house, very reasonable priced delicious best in MarkyateBernie, Lisa Phil and Sharon xxx

I listed type of visit as couples but I have not actually ever eaten in, only ever received take aways. However my experience of Indians is that if the take away is good, the restaurant experience will be better...and Markyate spice take away is excellent. The quality of the meat is nearly always good. Very tender lamb. The choice is great and the flavours are really good. I love the pasanda. The king prawn puri is also a favourite and very good. I think it may be the best Indian in an area with several Indian restaurants.

Our evening celebrating my daughters birthday was spoilt by a very rude waiter who shouldn't be working in any job that requires interaction with customers. The food is good and we have always enjoyed takeaways from this restuarant. We will never eat here again.

As s family of 12 markyate spice looked after us fabulously. when I asked them for a balloon for the table as it was my mums 70th they went above and beyond and produced an amazing bday cake. Couldn’t fault our evening and the food was delicious

We have used this restaurant - both to eat in and for takeaways - for 3 years now. Just waited 2 hours for a home delivery - without much of an apology. Food arrived at 8.30pm having been ordered at 6.25pm, by which time (a) we were not hungry and (b) I had missed an important meeting. No vouchers available at the time for compensation. Maybe we should try the competition at the Pavilion. Not acceptable.

We had a lovely Friday curry night. We had a take away. It took 45min which is average. The food was very nice. l had chicken balti. Sooo yummy! They sent extra mint sauce which we loved! Definitely recommended!

Very dissatisfied with this restaurant. We waited over an hour for our starters to arrive, no apology for the length of time we had to wait. Staff were very unfriendly and did not seem to care at all. We had to ask for drinks and enquire as to when our food was likely to arrive. I had lamb passanda which was one of the worst examples of this dish I had ever tried, the meat was so hard and chewy and the sauce was bright red which is most unusual. One of our party’s food was incorrectly written down by the waiter and by the time they had rectified there mistake it was too late as everyone else had finished their meals. No reduction in the bill due to their error. Needless to say we will not be back.

I went for a takeaway and was treated like royalty. I even had a free glass of beer. The aubergine dish was excellent but the aloo gobi lacked a little spice, I thought it quite bland, and thus marked down the meal. The menu is very extensive. There was a large number of staff on duty as well which indicates its popularity.

Absolutly incredable place to eat. Everything about this place is amazing, Decor, ambiance, friendliness of staff and the food. I highly recommend this restaurant. Simply O.M.G

A double celebration, fathers day plus fathers birthday ruined.by uncaring service. One hour to wait for a starter plus another 45 mins plus for the mains. Both times my father had to get up to ask where the meals were. 60th birthday dinner and father day celebration for him ruined. Lots of take away meals seemed to be dealt with ASAP but not the people actually in the restaurant.The worst thing was they took no notice of us at all during the 2 and a half hours waiting, the restaurant became almost empty, and yet they still did not seem to care apart from a few platitudes when the meal was finally delivered. What a shame, the food good but the service awful. Never will go to the restaurant again. Other nearby restaurants care far more for you. The two stars are for the food, nothing for the restaurant and the staff.

Just broken my diet to eat here and I’m so glad I did the food was absolutely delicious me and the hubs are totally stuffed. So fresh tasty hot and full of flavour. The host is a dream so friendly and personable but without being annoying a very rare skill. The only thing I didn’t like was putting salt and pepper on my table from another table while relaying but that’s an industry bug bare all in all I think we’ve found our new favourite curry house! I have eaten at this restaurant and had many take away and they have all been fine, however tonight was awful I had a take away with a starter that was so poor I could not eat it. Not sure if it’s changed hands or chef has moved on but so poor never again

Always really good food which I highly recommend. My only criticism would be on takeaway orders. Check what you’ve order and how much you pay. I have frequently found extra Naan bread and poppadoms which I didn’t order in the delivery, which did hit the bill (hence the drop in stars) - food quality 5 stars.

Markyate Spice is by a long way the best curry house around. The quality of the food is fantastic. Normal Indian food with an exciting twist. Lamb cutlets to start are amazing.

Had a lovely meal, food was excellent. Varied menu a lot of unusual items I haven't see at other Indian restaurants. Staff very helpful recommending some interesting dishes. Will certainly come back

Markyate is lucky to have two superb Indian restaurants. With only about 40 covers this is a small restaurant but an excellent place to eat. Worth driving to and highly recommended. The meal I enjoyed today at Markyate Spice was one of the best tasting Indian meals I have enjoyed in a long time. The food was fresh, crisp and spiced to perfection. The starters are big, meaning that the side dishes we ordered for the mains were barely touched, which was a real shame. Service was smooth and we timings for ordering and between courses was spot on.

Hadn't been in a while - went in with the good lady yesterday evening - genuinely welcomed - nice buzz about the place without being too loud. Staff attentive and efficient - without being on your case - nice range of drinks without breaking the bank - Cobra on tap - starters and main meals were excellent - well cooked and prepared - were offered a free drink by our waiter - and then had a really nice chat and again an offer of a drink with Gus the owner, nice touch - Ive forgotten how good this lovely restaurant is - and how much they care about what they do - I thoroughly recommend.

I had Prawns to start and Lamb chops it was delicious, I was with an old friend and we had a great night and a laugh with some other guests. The house wine was very nice and very reasonable by bottle and glass. Staff were very freindly and attentive good value and lovely setting inside. Would definately recommend..

1st of all ordered food from Markyate Spices website on a Sunday afternoon nearly two weeks ago, placed and payed for food for delivery as website stated opening time of midday. After over an hour wait rang restaurant several times before I got an answer only to be told restaurant opens at 4 they were sorry and would refund the money. After nearly two week wait no refund decided to go down for dinner, explained problem and sat down for dinner (Check restaurant is open before using website as order will go through if closed). Now the food, without a doubt the best curry house around (if you read my other reviews I go to a lot of curry houses) beautiful food, small but lovely restaurant, really nice staff. Recommend duck rolls and lamb shank. Partner says best tarka dhal she’s had. Can’t recommend enough. Will be returning with friends as this place would take some beating.

This restaurant is located in the centre of a village about a 15 minute walk from the Holiday Inn hotel. The interior is pleasantly decorated in a modern style, but is not very large so it is probably worth booking for peak times.

We love going to Markyate Spice! Not only is it our best local curry house, it’s consistently winning prizes for being the best in Hertfordshire! Last night we went with family to celebrate my birthday and once again we were treated to a delicious meal and their phenomenal service. We always feel valued and treated like family and it’s a pleasure to watch the customers around us being served with the same excellence and utmost generosity.

Food here is amongst the best Indian food I have had. It is slightly more expensive than it's local competing restaurants but still hardly what I'd call pricey and good value for the quality of what you get. The setting is modern and the service friendly and efficient.

Every dish tastes so fresh and so many different flavours. Never feel bloated or uncomfortable afterwards. We’ve only ever ordered takeaway from you but can’t wait to dine in. Consistently good service when our curry has been delivered.

My partner and I have eaten here regularly since they opened in 2015. We both eat out frequently and in my case often on international business, the food here is consistently excellent. We both very much enjoy Xacuti lamb &Kerala; style Murgh + aubergine, plus the king prawn Dhansak is very special, I have no hesitation in highly recommending this restaurant..do yourself a favour and swing by, trust me, you will love it..

EVERYTHING IS SO FRESH!! It’s tasty and the best part when your a scaredy chilli hater. You can ask for anything at any spice level you want. Invaluable couldn’t recommend highly enough.

I don’t know what these people are on about when they say disgraceful clearly have no taste,or even asked the amazing staff for how they want there food, this is an amazing restaurant, the staff are lovely couldn’t do enough for you, the food is out of this world and If you tell them how you would like your food ie more or less spice they are more than happy to cook the food to how you like it,offer a great selection of Indian food, it’s a 5 star Indian, very great dining atmosphere perfect for a function or to celebrate a special occasion,and of course go for dinner, couldn’t recommend Markyate spice enough. :)

When an event was cancelled for our book group, one of the members, who lives in Markyate immediately suggested Markyate Spice as an alternative. And what an great idea that was for we had an excellent evening with attentive and friendly service and delicious food. Some of us were keen to try new dishes but were hesitant about what to order but the staff are on hand to offer suggestions and we weren't disappointed. In fact they were very keen for us not to eat the usual chicken tikka massala or lamb bhuna. The starters were tasty too including the king prawn puri. And I have never tasted a better peshwari nan! We all said that we'd be back to this award-winning restaurant.

.. after ordering a takeaway from here and based on how good that was, we felt that we had to experience the food in the restaurant... and it was really worth it. We were impressed with the lively atmosphere and a modern decor and ambience, providing a balance of tradition and contemporary. Starters are so well presented and with really tasty accompaniments. The mains are just as good, really well defined and precise flavours, little touches like kaffir lime leaves bring extra levels on top ... The Kulfi is pretty spot on too. Healthy sized portions and really helpful and friendly staff. Even though the restaurant was full, service was fluid and well delivered. We think it's a bit of a gem and certainly worth the trip out to Markyate. Given how busy it was, Booking is probably advisable.. the Wine list was also pretty impressive and maybe we'll get a taxi next time!

We decided to go and try Markyate spice for a Sunday lunch with a difference.

Great food 5/5, wide menu and attentive service. However, the huge in your face over bearing bubble lighting display is completely out of place in any restaurant never mind one this small.

Discovered this place purely by accident, and a lucky accident at that, food is superb in the restaurant, and takeaway is just as good, it’s become a regular and never seems to miss a beat.

Ordered a takeaway from here, customer service was amazing, however, the food was very greasy, to the point I could not eat it and the chilli and cheese naan had no cheese on it. Was expecting a good meal, was left hungry but with very greasy hands. Won’t be ordering again.

3 of us went here Saturday evening , the restaurant is spotless , the toilets , always a good indication were pristine, the service excellent and the food top notch. Well presented starters all looking great on the plate. the mains were the same and there was more than enough , all fresh and very tasty , all the staff were attentive and we will be returning well done Markyate Spice a true asset to this small village.

Oh my god. Stumbled upon this little gem. We moved to Markyate and found this restaurant. It's amazing! Food is absolutely amazing, I love it and we have tried a lot of takeaways.....not your same old, same old, it's quality......

I've visited very many Thai and Indian restaurants in the St Albans area, most of them have been pretty good. But when I was taken by friends to the Markyate Spice this week it knocked all the others into 2nd place!

We visit regularly, but just wanted to give feedback to this lovely restaurant so that our next visit is as good as the past ones. There were 4 of us, poppadoms and dips were as usual excellent. However the following was a real shame: Chicken Biryani was quite bland, no real flavour; Duck was uneatable, I did send it back and it was deleted off the bill, it was I believe pre cooked and re heated so much that it was hard, and extremely dry; the Chicken Jaflrezi was served at the very hottest we have experienced (after being asked to lower the heat this time), and was difficult to eat, not as enjoyable, the remaining chicken dish, was new to us, it was extremely hot, but we were warned that it was. Was it a different chef? not such a pleasant evening Markyate Spice!!!

Sat down for a meal with my partner, very peaceful AT FIRST, ordered the duck rolls which were out of this world, then I ordered a chicken tikka masala, which is meant to be mild and creamy, well it came out and it was spicy and didn't look appetising at all. I sent it back and they sent me another one which was exactly the same, I complained and they said there isn't anything else they could do about it, they didn't even take it off the bill at the end, so I paid for a meal I didn't even eat let alone enjoy. A pair of men came in, they were sitting opposite each other and shouting at each other. If your expecting a nice peaceful meal, this is defiantly not the place to go. If your expecting a nice chicken tikka masala, go elsewhere. I won't be eating here again.

Award winning chef & fresh flavoursome food, great service. One of the best I've been to. Try the shashlik dishes or from the tandoori range. Cobra is on tap if you prefer and prices very reasonable. Will be visiting again soon. Thanks

4 of us went to Markyate Spice to surprise my Father for his birthday.

This was our first visit to Markyate Spice and what a great experience - a warm welcome, fantastic food, efficient service - what more could you ask for? Will definitely return and can strongly recommend.

Even though it was a coincidence we ended up here, we didn´t regret it. The place was clean and spacious. Our waiter always made sure we had everything and was very friendly. The food was delicious, especially coconut rice and lamb tikka massala! Prices were reasonable.

This is going to become a favourite eating place for us. We received a happy and warm welcome on arrival and were seated promptly offering a choice of the tables left. The atmosphere was busy but not noisy , the tables were not too close together dressed with lovely fresh table linen and cutlery. Our drinks were brought to the table quickly so we could browse the menu, which I must say offered different and interesting dishes from the norm. Hubby and I tried different dishes to what we usually have, mainly because they sounded different, and they were using some different spices and sauces.

Brilliant service, tasty food, ideal portions. Fantastic evening out I highly recommend this restaurant
