Market Place Café in Mendip

We were not very impressed with our Full English breakfasts. The tomato and mushrooms lacked seasoning and the fried eggs were very rubbery.I tasted like they had been sat cooked for a while.Overall I felt it was overpriced for what it was. One positive was that the waitresses were relatively friendly. I believe that Whetherspoons does a better breakfast and for a better price! I wouldn’t return.

Acceptable lunch stop in Market place. Lacks atmosphere and looks rather tired, staff not engaged but food good.

I haven’t been in for ages and I’m so glad that I decided to meet my daughter and son-in-law here for tea and cakes today - a very busy Saturday in Wells! It was as lovely as I remember: great service, lovely drinks and cakes. I won’t be leaving it so long to return! Thank- you, Market Place Café and your lovely staff!!

Food ok, but service very poor. Waited 45 minutes for jacket potato. Four people serving tables & two cooking . We could hear plenty of people unhappy with the speed of service.

Nice selection of cakes. Ordered a carrot cake to take away, it was prepped within a short timescale, reasonably priced, and most importantly - moist and delicious. Very happy with my purchase. Thank you.

Had to leave, no sooner had we sat down than a big dog came right up to our table. Sick and tired of owners saying he is only being friendly. Why do dogs come before paying customers. Family of four left as our child has a severe dog anxiety.

The epitome of dreary. If they made a bit of an effort this place would be rammed, given the lack of non chain options in town. They could start with getting the staff to practice smiling and also to shut up. Cream teas looked good. Scones and pasties were OK.

Very disappointed, tea cake with butter and jam. No tea cake with margarine. Awful please stop trying to save money buy using cheap alternatives . Butter means butter

I went in before 11:30 to have a breakfast but by the time I was served they were no longer doing breakfast and I would have to wait half an hour for lunch. The price jump from breakfast to lunch was shocking! Now on a day i'm treating myself I will indulge on a pricey lunch, i'm also usually far too lazy to get up and find somewhere else, but these prices were so much that that's actually what I did. I had already ordered a coffee so I initially thought I could at least relax for a while but the chairs were so uncomfortable I drank it quickly and left. It was an extremely delicious coffee though, so i'm sure the food would have been just as nice. other things to note and to sumerise: - minimum card charge of £5 - no mobile signal - no wifi - menu had a lot more options than other nearby independent cafe's - staff were really lovely - nice and warm - uncomfortable seating - strict on breakfast/lunch times - breakfast priced okay - lunch overpriced - dog friendly

I was going to go to Ask for lunch but the waiting staff were so grumpy and unfriendly vibes I about turned and thought nope I can do better... that I did. I was seated by a lovely lady and took my order. I had found a little gem in the bussle of Saturday market day. The display of cakes and ice-creams were very inviting... the panini I had was yummy and the cheesecake was calling out to me so I had to takeaway. The service I received from one particular person she even ran after me to give me a takeaway fork. Very happy to give this business my money for the quality of food and service was outstanding.

Great food, but had to wait some time for it, probably we arrived at a busy time. The table next to us had a problem with their food as they were told that "the printer in the kitchen failed to print the order again".

Buffalo mozzerella and tomato toastie, prawn and Mary rose, and bacon sandwiches. All had a side portion of tortilla chips, and salad garnish which was a lovely touch. Good quality bread, and you can eat your ice cream at your table. I recommend the blackberries and clotted cream 😋

Not many smiles from the staff here, it all seemed a little "eyes-down" and perhaps, stressed. In trying to order, I was told that it was 2 minutes past 11:30, so I stopped trying to order mid sentence, when the colleague was asked to call the kitchen and check if I was allowed my choice. I felt a little out of place at this, but they would accept the order. Who wouldn't want a £24 order when there are plenty of other places to eat within a 500 yard radius... We then had to go back in the cafe to ask for the table to be cleared, as we'd sat looking at redundant coffee cups for some 20 minutes, with no indication of servicing the table from the previous users. Oh well, over half an hour larer, we found the food was OK. Onward...

Excellent location to sit outside in the market square. Food and service excellent but we had to move inside due to being plagued by wasps - not the cafes fault but maybe some pots with lemongrass or citronella might help to deter.

A bit dark and dingy 😕 very friendly staff though! Didn't have any food but unfortunately the only vegan milk was soy which curdled a lot in coffee!

The honey and ginger ice cream was really nice on a hot day.

Whenever I come to wells with my family we go here for our lunch and always have a jacket potato. So much choice of food but the jacket potatoes are really good! Very plentiful with the portion size and very good price. Love it here :)

My wife and I stopped in for breakfast. They are dog friendly and the staff were incredibly welcoming to us. The food was good and served quickly along with our drinks. A loosely little cafe I’m sure the outside seating at the front is ideal for watching the world go by.

Needed a late lunch and a place to do some work and Market Place Cafe (formally Crofters) was an obvious choice because of its ideal location and great menu. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Check them out, highly recommend.

First time in Wells for a few years, so went back to the place my partner and I used to like. Service is still friendly and welcoming while the potato with onion, goats cheese and enough salad to keep me going for a while was excellent.

The best cafe food in Wells. I ordered chicken pie, but it was the wrong day. Saturday 13th Jan 2024 was lamb vegetable pie. The tastiest pie I have ever eaten.

Delicious pig in blanket sandwiches, super fresh bread, very tasty, good friendly service, lovely to see the cafe so busy.

Simply, disgusting. My wife and I visited to get two scoops of ice cream; one in a cone and one in a cup. The lady who served us used her bare fingers to push the ice cream off of the scoop, getting it under her finger nails - gross. For the cone she used her bare hands; gripping it as high as the rim as she scooped ice cream inside. We didn’t say anything, paid and left. Feeling disgusted we threw away our ice creams, much as we have thrown away any possibility of returning to this place again… It’s no wonder it’s the worst country in Europe for the hospitality industry and, as an English Wells local, I’m ashamed of places like this - obviously, no thought given to the service at all… grim…

This place seemed a good option as they did gluten free options. They had just taken an order from a large party and so we were told we would have to wait 20 minutes for our food. We decided that would be fine. We were all finished our drinks when the food finally arrived after 40 minutes. The gluten free bread was stale. As with most cafes I'm assuming it was taken from the freezer and defrosted, but there are ways to defrost bread and keep it soft. The other paninis were just 'fine'. We were disgusted though when a customer came in to ask how long their food would be. They had arrived shortly after us, and probably told 20 minutes as well. She explained to them that their parking was due to run out, they didn't want a fine etc, and if it didn't arrive in the next 10 minutes they would need to go and would want a refund. We thought it was perfectly reasonable, and she wasn't aggressive, just to the point. After she had gone back outside the girl she spoke to them relayed the story to some colleagues mimicking the woman, and being rude about her. It was completely unprofessional behaviour. We are locals, so the type of repeat business they should want to retain, but we won't be back.

I live in Wells and we are blessed with many great Cafe's and restaurants. But the Market Place Café is definitely the best coffee in Wells. Also great breakfasts! Oh, and Ice Creams in the summer!

Good experience! Wide range of snacks, even veggie/ vegan/ gluten free choices. Soup for starters, pot of tea,jacket potatoe, loads of salad, choice of cakes and a tasty coffee for less than £ 20 a head? Winner! Tom behind the counter sorted everything out for us.

Cakes looked nice but the breakfast menu definitely felt like an afterthought. Paid about £5 for a very basic sandwich (options are bacon, sausage or vegan sausage) with no trimmings on supermarket sliced bread. Definitely stick to the cakes and smoothies.

Was a lovley little cafe, very clean and staff lovley. Nice place to enjoy a quiet cuppa.

Disappointed! Went for a quick visit to Wells on our way to a weekend break. We chose the cafe for the outside setting and closeness to the cathedral. I went inside to order, no problems so far, found some items on the menu and drinks. Our drinks arrived very quickly so this was good. After quite a while our breakfasts arrived. Unfortunately my partner's was missing bacon and mine was missing hash browns. I explained the issue with the meals and was told they would tell the kitchen. My partner asked for sugar as none came with our drinks. When they came back they gave the sugar and no mention of the missing food. So we said again said about this. We waited quite a while and then decided to eat as our food was getting cold. After a while we spotted another waitress, so again we asked about our missing food. She quite rudely said how hot food took a while in the kitchen. Ok yes it does, but this wasn't additional food. We ordered straight from the menu. Eventually our missing items came when our breakfast was pretty much eaten (I was actually missing the correct number of hash browns but by now we were just grateful for something) overall we didn't feel satisfied. The food was mediocre at best and the staff weren't helpful. Not even an apology. I wouldn't recommend anyone here

Food & experience is aimed at anyone over 65. If you are under that age, just give it a miss.

My wife's Twin sister has been before so she took us in for a cup of tea 🍵🫖 and a Coffee ☕☕. We also had some of Their Delicious Scrummy Cakes 🎂🥧🍮🧁. Two of which were Gluten-free. We really enjoyed ourselves 😁😁. And what we had. The staff have really got what they do off to a T. Very Professional and Friendly. Thank you very much. We Will be back next time we are in Wells. Incredibly rude waitress, asked if OK to sit and blanked us, walked off not wanting to take our order for 20 minutes. Avoid avoid avoid

After having ice cream and take away from this place which was very good we thought we would have a sit in meal. That was a mistake, got our order wrong and an adjacent table were also complaining of a wrong order and when we did get our food it was nothing to write home about. We did have an apology from one waitress but when we went to pay, and I said we would not come here again the Manageress? said please yourself.

Gorgeous cakes and drinks. The lemon and blueberry cake was amazing.

Our order was incorrect and instead of being apologetic and trying to fix our order they said that we'd ordered incorrectly and started getting really rude and confrontational with us, turns out the order was correct and they had the ticket and had just gotten it wrong. They offered no apologies. We're all human and make mistakes but getting uptight and rude with people is just not acceptable in a service role.

4 of us went here on market day for a hot drink and a bite to eat. The lady was very welcoming and friendly as soon as we came to the door, asking us to fill in track and trace. I had a hot chocolate with cream, marshmallows and chocolate sprinkling, which was very rich and chocolatey. I had a full English, fried egg was perfect and dippy, sausage and bacon was nice and meaty and good quality, beans in a little pot to prevent them from tainting the egg. Highly recommended, would definitely go again if we find ourselves in Wells in the future!

They welcome you as soon as you arrive there, take you to your tables Orders done at the tables Pay on the way out Staff friendly and great Place for sanitize hands etc as you arrive (Market place café but comes up as crofters on the Credit card bill but looking at the pictures this is OK!!) Soup was tasty and HOT as it should be!! One of the nicest places I have been to for a while

This is by far the nicest cafe I've visited! We arrived early for breakfast on our first day of our holiday as we stopped at Wells Cathedral. The staff are SO polite, and even let us sit inside before it opened at 10am. The young man that served us was lovelyand so very polite. We had a full English and it was delicious. A delightful way to start our holibobs! Thank you.

0% customer service!!! We visited the market today and purchased a burger from the market. We took a seat outside and ordered some drinks which didnt seem to be a problem at the time. Then, a lady maybe the manager (rather large lady) stormed out and shouted had we not seen the sign about eating food brought elsewhere on her tables and chairs. Firstly I told her to drop the attitude there was no need to be spoken to like that. Then she moved my partners burger out the way to show us the smallest sign. We apoligised but she was really angry. We returned our drunks and said we would rather spend our money elsewhere. She shouldnt open on market days if she cant handle it. There was 7 of us today who wont be returning and we will make sure we spread the word about our experience.

Good value, very helpful and friendly and a great location right by the Bishop's Palace and the Cathedral, with seating outside in a pedestrian area.

We ducked in to escape a downpour, really expecting to only manage a hot drink as we follow a plant based diet. We were delighted to find a vegan burger on the menu as well as plenty of options for our little omnivores on the kids menu. The service was outstanding, we were seated immediately after visiting the hand sanitizer and I was made to feel very comfortable about breastfeeding our baby. The food was brought out quickly and the staff were really friendly, chatting to the kids about Hot Fuzz locations and pointing out where I could buy an umbrella. We will definitely be back when next in Wells.

We popped in here for a quick cuppa. The service is good, staff are cheery and there are plenty of options for those with dietary requirements. I had a gluten free cake and my girlfriend had a vegan sausage roll. We will pop by here again some time.

We are relatively local to the area and the 1st time we have visited this place . It's nothing special and just a mediocre Cafe offering nothing special in terms of service or menu. What put me off this place after requesting a small cheese sandwich for our 1 year old grand daughter we were served this ( pic ) and charge £3.75 for it - despite a party of 3 adults ordering other items from their full price menu. In summary this place is expensive offering poor value for money. We waited 10 mins to place order at their counter ( no table service). Their 'till staff ( x 3) didn't inspire much confidence and they seemed to lack initiative. In summary high prices and taking advantage of the tourist/visitor trade to this popular town. We wont be back . I'd recommend the Crown Hotel directly across the road where there is a much better atmosphere , more variety on their menu at the same or lower prices for similar items.

Really nice, friendly, clean tea room overlooking the market in Wells. I really like their cheese scones with chutney. . Outdoor seating svailable. Really good selection of herbal teas - I like the cherry ones best. Gluten-free options, including crumpets. I think they do gluten-free scones as well. Plenty of choice of food. I always make a beeline for Crofters when I am in Wells.

Reasonable cafe located right on the market place. Very attractive looking from the front, but the inside is rather drab and anonymous. I had a fairly priced ploughman's lunch which had very nice ham. Waiting time was average, but service very pleasant and polite.

Superb cafe in a central location right on the market. Good size with plenty of tables and good amount of seating. Good menu with an excellent selection. Had the ham and stilton ploughmans and i can only say what a triumph it was. Truly the best i have had. All the portions going out were very generous.
