Rude landlady! This is the second time I’ve been here and I find her totally off-ish and rude. I asked if I could take my food home as I had so much left. She gave me a horrible look, threw her hands in the air and said “I’ll get the boxes but you’re sorting it yourself! “ I was so shocked! The first time I went I had a burger which was a bit boring. My friend had the curry which he loved. I really wanted it but was told it was spicy. When I tried it, it was very spicy. Even my friend who loves spicy, couldn’t eat it all. Second visit we had a roast. It was ok. But we won’t be going back again, not worth it!

Meal was OK, nothing special but not bad either. Standard pub food. The manager was a bit offish/rude and made us feel rushed with ordering our food as soon as we arrived. Also her hair was down which is unhygienic. Most food places staff are expected to tie their hair back. Wouldn't go back.

Had lived in Tavistock for a long time, but never previously visited. Sunday Lunch was excellent, with proper Yorkshire Puddings and an excellent selection of vegetables. Service was efficient and helpful. If you are looking for good quality food, this is definitely recommended.

Great food, freshly prepared, and well presented.

Food is genuinely really good and reasonable value. Also good beer on tap. Nicely presented and good atmosphere. The Landlady is efficient however is just a bit 'awkward' and defensive in terms of her customer relationship skills. Its a pity because it can create a slightly difficult and uncomfortable experience at times in what is otherwise a really good pub with excellent food.

Read this! My daughter and granddaughter have travelled from Australia to visit family, and we end up Plymouth way to see the oldest in the family....89! Yesterday we had a day out and travelled towards Dartmoor, with us searching for somewhere for lunch.....then we tripped across the Market Inn! My wife made a chance and skilful booking on line. Now TMI is a small pub on a hill, so getting old lady in her trolley into the pub looked like it was going to be an issue, but if you build enough momentum from the slope in the car park it is achievable with a push! When inside it is a mix of traditional pub and recently refurbished bar space, and it didn't look busy......tables were set for pre-booked events. Staff were an efficient and friendly mix, and soon orders were taken for drinks and food....the menu looked good, with my daughter getting her wanted "Roast dinner". There was a wait for food, understandable as it was the start of service, but when it came.........nice! The standard of the food was good for sure, and great value! Endorse this nice space, it is worth it, and very much gives quality......i wish i lived next door.......

Good good and well presented but the owner/manager is miserable We asked for coffee at the end of our meal only to be told that they don't serve coffee, but i was staring at the coffee machine, she obviously didn't want to serve coffee as she wanted to go home, not great customer service

Lovely pub you can go to for a Sunday lunch or a pint after you come back to Tavi from walking the moor. I love sitting in the garden.

A really splendid choice of venue for my party of three. The food, menu and service was way above what I expected. Well worth seeking out. The range of drinks looked inviting, but as I was driving, I stuck to soft drinks.

Excellent Sunday roast, we had the beef and turkey which were accompanied by huge Yorkshire puddings, eleven (yes eleven!) fresh vegetables and delicious gravy. The service was impeccable and the whole ambiance of the place is welcoming and comfortable. Desserts are amazing too, that's if you have room as portions are generous.

Food was the best food I've ever eaten. Service was 10/10 and they were all friendly and lovely. Definitely recommend!!

Quaint oldy worldy looking pub local beers etc had a meal there and owner laid on flowers for wife's birthday at my request meal was excellent and we recommend the scallop starter. Odd opening hours due to time of year with less tourism. But does get going in season.

We had a delightful dinner at the Market Inn recently. The food was amazing - really interesting selection and presentation. We enjoyed the meal by a cozy fire with quiet conversations around us. The server was animated, professional yet engaging. We will definitely make a return visit when we are next in the area.

A nice place serving really good food, was expecting more of a typical pub, but in fact there were some really quite reastauranty dishes on the menu. We kept with the basics, having gone looking for simple food, and these were done to a high standard. Can wholeheartedly recommend. Nice old world feel to the place, stone walls and stove-fires burning to keep you warm There is a small (6-8 car) carpark out the back accessed down a steep drive from the road to the side, with a couple of tight bends. Useful, but others parking carelessly after you arrive could block you in.

What a great find! Went here for an evening meal while on holiday nearby. The food was amazing - generous portions of fine restaurant quality food. Between us, we tried mussels cooked in clotted cream, cider and leeks; belly of pork with mash and greens; fillet of hake with cockle beurre blanc; and lemon posset with cherries. All were excellent. There is a good selection of beers and ciders on tap, and a well-considered wine list. The hosts were very welcoming and attentive, and clearly take great pride in their business. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Stopped here after a long day walking the Drakes Trail. Food was excellent, as was the service and atmosphere, highly recommended, we'll be back when we next visit Tavistock

First time I'd been to this pub for many years, and changed for the better. Friendly, efficient & catered for wedding party very well. Will call again next time in Tavistock. Recommended.

It was the best Sunday roast I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Lovely inn, with lovely waiting staff. The only down point was that the desserts were not to the same standard. But I will be coming back. Very reasonable prices which is a bonus.

Nice food, the portions are a good size. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Good selection of beers on tap and many many Gins to choose from. A short walk from my house means it's easy to go out for dinner and drinks with people who visit.

Stopped here for an hour on an ale run, place was neat, tidy, clean and spacious, very well run by friendly helpful staff. Never had any food so can not comment on this aspect.

Excellent Christmas wreath making day including a delicious lunch with Prosecco, coffee & cakes and everything provided to make our beautiful wreaths. Lovely atmosphere with Christmas music and log burner. A mazing value for money 🤗

After a last minute decision to go out for Sunday lunch with my family who were visiting, we came upon The Market Inn. Booking was easy, and after we arrived earlier than planned, they were so good in finding us a table there and then. We all opted for a traditional roast. The reviews are very much earned! The meal was delicious, the service was attentive and the cost was competitive. The Inn itself is extremely welcoming. Needless to say, we will return.

Just had a fabulous evening from the warm welcome when we walked in to the end of our night....our monkfish Thalia was amazing as was the service....thank you all for a great time.. we will be back.

Have been here several times now and the food and service has never let us down. There was six of su (family) and the were lovely with our little four year old granddaughter. The food was fantastic. My husband and I had the slow cooked beef rib and it was cooked beautifully, falling off the bone as it should be. The a companying vegetables (wi ter vegetable terrine and red cabbage) were also lovely and it was the perfect winter meal. Everyone had different things and all loved their choices. So glad this oub has kept its standards high

The landlady apologised at the outset that they had staff shortages due to illness and asked us to patient. But she was very professional and we had no issues with the service and the food was superb and also had some very good real ales.

Meeting midway between S Cornwall and E Devon, we were offered a private corner which worked perfectly even with the Halloween Murder Mystery event going on in the main bar.... It was all very "Agatha Christie" with foul weather outside and a lovely wood burner glowing inside....excellent service all round. Thank you

Not been to Tavistock before so didn’t know what to expect. Turned out to be one of the best pub meals I’ve eaten. Really crispy batter made the fish and chips memorable, and the fish wasn’t overcooked which I have encountered elsewhere. Service was friendly and efficient, and service was speedy. Really renewed my interest in pub food. Won’t be a regular as I live in Truro but any time I’m in the area it’ll be top of the list of places to eat.

Great Sunday lunch , great beer and wine and fantastic hospitality. While we were having a drink at the bar the landlady must have had to turn away 4 walk-ins or phone bookings for that lunch service. So book in advance !!!

We Googled for Dog Friendly Food pubs and The Market Inn menu looked good and had its own parking We were warmly welcomed in with our dog and asked about drinks and given the menus quickly and with smiles. The menu was really appealing and choices for everyone. I went for a starter of St. Austell mussels in a chilli chorizo broth. The mussels were great, well cooked and meaty and tbh I would have been happy with a bowl of the broth and bread to dip in it. Followed by the lamb rump for me and the fish n chips for my wife. Both were very tasty, the lamb was tender and served just right. Both were very good sized plates, to the point that we couldn’t really manage dessert, (This time)!! The entertainment board looked good for the month although none on the night we were there. All in all, a solid recommendation from my wife and I, with the added ‘Brucies Bonus’ of 10% discount on a Monday and Tuesday and well worth getting just that little bit away from Tavistock centre for.

That’s all I really need to say to describe the meal we had last night. Will definitely be coming back when we visit Tavistock again.

Fourth visit to this friendly, cosy pub. Have eaten here each time. The first time I had the sausage and mash dish which was sublime. I decided I'd try the Thali on my next visit as it looked amazing. It was. I recommended it to my husband who recommended it to his friend. We had our second (my third) Thali visit last night opting for the chicken version - they do a monkfish version too, which we haven't tried. My husband and our friend didn't even consider looking at the menu ( which is very good btw) . We all knew exactly what we wanted to eat and had decided, on the spur of the moment, to chance seeing if we could get a table. Luckily, although fully booked, there was just one table left, right near the log burner which was perfect for our whippet. The landlady is always friendly and helpful, as was the lovely lady who had to put up with serving us. They serve my favourite gin, Death's Door, which is a bonus, my husband enjoyed the local ale from Tavistock brewery and the Thali was, of course, as splendid as ever. Very highly recommended.

I’m not from Tavistock but our friends are and as a result none us will return to eat here. All of the below is the interaction with the manager/owner, the other two waitresses were super friendly and helpful. I could go into a lot more detail but the main points are: One of the main dishes on the menu was chicken breast. I don’t like bones but am fully aware boneless chicken farms don’t exist (🤣) so always check whether the breast still has the bone in and was advised the bone was still in this dish. As a result I asked if it could be removed before being served (never having been refused this anywhere else) only to be categorically told “no”. I can’t remember why this was a no & in hindsight wish I’d remembered exactly why! So the mains were very average but one thing to note, one of my friends had the Chicken Thali which contained bones, so obviously the chicken hadn’t been very well prepared plus the sauce tasted like a ‘curried’ barbecue sauce…..very strange! We’re quite accustomed to curries so can’t work out where this ‘good proper curry’ originates. So then we moved onto pudding, I wanted the chocolate torte but it was served with pouring cream….. I don’t like cream……..ok I’m fussy but don’t judge me, I can’t help what I don’t like! Anyway I explained that I don’t like cream so could I have salted caramel ice cream instead of pouring cream but was categorically told “no”, followed by “This is a grownup dish, if you understand what I’m saying, so has to have the pouring cream to cut through”……yes, that’s pretty much verbatim! This was then repeated to me after I reiterated that I don’t like cream. After this “fabulous” customer service I gave up and said ‘no problem, I’ll have nothing’; only to then be told ‘we can do this for you’! My response would have been forget it, but my gorgeous husband, ever the diplomat, said ‘yes, that would be great’…..it arrived…..with vanilla ice cream 😆. To summarise, I feel the bone could have been removed. If by removing it, it affected the look of the dish, that’s my issue. If replacing the pouring cream with ice cream was a cost issue (we felt this was the real issue rather than me being unable to be a grownup!!) why not just say ‘of course we can do that, but we will have to add £0.50/£1.00 or whatever to the bill’.

Amazing food - we all ate different dishes and all really, really enjoyed them. Great quality, taste and attention to detail. Fabulous to have such a great addition to our choices in Tavistock!

We, an ageing party of four, spotted some empty tables on wandering by the pub and decided to stop in for a drink. Half our party occupied a single table, while two of us ordered some drinks, remarking that we would not be having food. Nothing was said to suggest this would be a problem, and the bartender was happy to serve us our drinks in full view of the rest of our party sitting at one of four empty tables. Five minutes later, the bartender told us we couldn't stay on the table we had occupied and that there was nowhere else to sit, despite all of the other said tables still being vacant and there being no markings to suggest any were reserved. I found her tone rude on approach. She then made some aggressive remark when I pointed out, on finishing our drinks standing at the bar 15 minutes later, that all of the said tables were still empty and still had no markings to indicate they were reserved for diners. Really poor form, I think, and could have been handled without the overt hostility, and with clearer communication.
