Enjoyed our coffee and sandwich here while on holiday. Fast, efficient & friendly service. Took details of my specific dietary requirements due to a medical condition and followed them precisely. I wish other venues were this attentive.

For the price a seriously mediocre lunch, drinks came way before the food which is probably meant to make you order more drinks. The food was fairly standard fare, the hummus wrap was very wet and not able to be eaten without cutlery, sloppy hummus, sun dried tomatoes swimming in olive oil and olives straight out of the jar. Definitely had better.

Visited today for coffee and cheese scone (which I requested not to be heated up). Waited 10 minutes and was on point of leaving when the waitress reappeared and took my order. (The cafe was very quiet overall at this time and I was the only customer waiting in that section). The waitress was pleasant, made my coffee, took card payment when she brought the drink and advised the scone was “on its way”. After another considerable wait, she called the kitchen to enquire after the scone, however a total 10 minutes at least had elapsed before the scone was brought by another staff member (with no apology for the delay from either staff member). Luckily the scone was delicious but by this time I had finished my coffee. Service should be very much better, it’s not cheap at over £8 for these items and I will be loathed to return.

We had a nice stop here on our way back east from the south coast of Cornwall. The breakfasts were quick to be brought out and hit the spot. I had a summer special iced tea which was really tasty. I would say the coffee wasn’t strong, and expected more from a “coffee house”, but still a delightful little stop off, with public toilets nearby and a good sized market to peruse.

Feels like a Tavistock institution now. Outside covered area is a great feature. Always busy. Customer service always really good. The prices feel like they are getting a liitle steep. Good range of food which is ok but not inspiring. A few tweaks and this could be an amazing cafe. Pretty solid as is though.

Waited 40 minutes for food - when asked when food was coming we were told we are very busy! At no point when taking our order were we told of delay. Paid when we ordered! Hot drinks were cold when food finally came. When food eventually arrived the order was wrong - wrap instead of panini. Had lost will to ask for correct order!! Would NOT recommend this cafe

Very average cafe, service ok although wanted paying before food brought out. We had a Dukes burger and Cesar salad and a couple of milkshakes. Milkshakes ok but a little warm. Burger, taste wise ok but the patty was very thin and the side salad well not very salady. One piece of sweet corn a bit of cucumber and a touch of lettuce (see pic) I think there might have been a strand of onion in there and the nachos were ok but only a few. The Cesar salad size wise great but very tangy Overall very average, wouldn't bother going back.

I bought a coffee with oat milk yesterday late morning (22/06/24). 2 women were serving. While all smiles and giggles for the cyclists in front of me, their hospitality cooled when it came to my turn. Ok, I got initial smiles when first taking my order, but from then on it was sullen faces and general disinterest. When I was handed my coffee, it was so full to the brim that immediately as I started walking away it spilled onto my hand, and it was such a painful scald I'm amazed I was able to not drop it, perhaps knowing I wouldn't be offered a replacement by these two, even though it was filled ridiculously high with scalding coffee. No cardboard tray to carry it safely, or even a cardboard sleeve to provide a buffer against the heat. I brought it back to the table by the counter and said how it was so full it spilled and burnt my hand, no response. I popped the lid and said look how full it is. One of them cast half a glance then carried on ignoring me. I was shocked by the lack of consideration or any care to help me find a solution. So I asked if they had any serviettes to carry my cup with, she pointed and told me where to find the serviettes, I used them to soak some of the coffee out of the cup to make it possible to carry it, then left them on the table in a dirty protest, as I was so shocked at the lack of service at this cafe which I always see very busy, so thought it had a good reputation. OWNER!! If you ever read this - it wouldn't hurt to provide cardboard trays to carry hot drinks in, you can't be that much of a skinflint, can you? And try to employ staff that have enough common sense to know when a hot drink is filled too high to be carried without spilling, it's not rocket science. Never to return to this place!

This takes up most of one wall in Tavistock's Pannier Market. We sat outside in the sun. Lady came to clear the table, came back to take our order. Our drinks came, and we paid. Then we waited. It was a long wait. This was the weekend of the Tavistock Food Market and the centre of town was busy. I would have liked to get food from the food stalls, but of course that would have meant eating standing up in the street - not ideal. And of course the queues for food were long. Food came. I ordered a bacon and Stilton baguette. Reader, it was wonderful. It wasn't what I would call a baguette, more a sort of bread roll thing, but nice bread. But wow, bacon and Stilton together, I have never heard of such a thing, and it was delicious.

The chilli at Dukes is the best chilli my partner and I have ever had the pleasure of devouring! Every mouthful is a joy, and accompanied with one of Dukes' scrumptious buttery, garlic and rosemary baguettes and fluffy rice, it really is a treat for the taste buds! It iis the perfect balance of flavours and heat. The only anomaly was on one occasion, when we sampled the vegetarian option of the chilli. It was surprisingly disappointing! We were expecting all the same flavours of the meat version, just with beans and veg. There were lots of lovely beans and vegetables, but no flavour whatsoever. It was odd. There was no spice and seemingly no effort had been made to add any of the delicious flavours we enjoy so much in the meat option. We left on that occasion feeling sad that vegetarians will never be able to enjoy the delights that we usually do as meat eaters! On the whole, it's always a lovely experience when visiting Dukes. It's not perfect, but it's quirky and it does what it needs to do to keep people wanting to come back - there is something for everyone on the menu, the staff are efficient and friendly, you have the option to sit inside or to dine al fresco and there is the sweet little touch of blankets on the seats when you sit outside. We look forward to our next visit and the mouthwatering chilli!

The menu says "famous" chilli - it should say "bland" chilli because, apart from a dose of salt and a touch of chilli, it has little taste. You'd think a "coffee house" would choose good beans, but it's the standard English cafe variety.

Okay so we ordered a veggie breakfast nap and a cream tea. The scone arrived immediately and was eaten whilst we waited 15 mins for the nap. Why not bring them out together? The veggie nap arrived, it was mushroom, spinach, egg and tomato. But the spinach and tomatoes weren't cooked! Half cold and half warm bap. So strange! The chef doesn't know anything about veggie food clearly. The bap also came with tortilla crisps and a sweetcorn and raw carrot salsa 😂 so so strange. So not worth it. Vegetarians and vegans beware!!

Nice little cafe beside the market. Fairly basic menu but lovely cakes etc, & generous sized coffees. Lovely in the summer if you sit outside, and cosy inside in the winter. Major, major drawback though, is that there are no toilet facilities. There are public toilets close by in the market (open until 4pm), but both times I've been to Dukes recently they've been out of commission (for cleaning or just closed). There are 24hr ones opposite the Post Office but it's not convenient and puts me off going unfortunately.

My husband and I went to Dukes yesterday. I ordered soup and my husband had a cream tea. My husbands cream tea arrived five minutes later. Twenty five minutes later I still hadn't got my soup. When asked about it we were told, there's nothing they can do as it comes from another kitchen. Then she promptly went and ladled my soup into a bowl and put the roll on a plate and brought it out. I smiled and thanked her, but she wasn't happy. After a couple of hours walking around Tavistock, we decided to try again. It wasn't busy. We sat down and fifteen minutes later, we still hadn't been served. Other people on two other tables that arrived after us, were served right away. We got up and left. The food is lovely here, but the staff need training. All we did was ask how long the soup would be and were not rude to the staff, so they had no reason to be rude to us.

My partner had a bacon and Brie panini she said was alright ! A strange review as more about the staff, not the food...I'm a big fan of Dukes, visited often over thr years abd the soup is a big favourite.Friday afternoon, 4pm after a lovely meal, I needed the toilet. It was busy, I waited, a member of staff left as I went in. I was shocked at how she had left the loo, knowing someone was outside. There was faeces everywhere, flushed but no thought of tidying up, or even bleaching. Yhrte was a bottle of bleach in the corner. I know that if you have to go, you have to go but really! Have some pride, and the lady then went straight back to the kitchen and carried on. I cannot ever imagine returning ti eat, knowing if your toilet habits that bad, then what about food hygiene with food. It was the most appalling experiance.

The service was very good, quick and efficient. We ordered sweet potato and pepper soup with a cheese scone and a cup of tea. The soup was very salty and yellow in colour. There were a few orange grated bits in it which we presumed were sweet potato. I could not taste any sweet potato because it was so very salty. It tasted of a salty thick sauce. The cheese scone was o.k. It had cooked grated cheese on its top but didn’t have a strong cheese flavour. The cup of tea arrived with the tea bag dangling in it. They didn’t even bother to make it in a teapot. All in all we felt the quality of the food was poor.

Good location that has both adequate indoor and outdoor tables that were very clean. That said, it was all very clean and only a couple of outdoor tables had crockery for removal and cleaning. Whilst there was adequate space outdoors, anyone in a wheelchair would have had some difficulties moving inside the dining area.Ordered white baguette, stilton and apple juice and a white bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich on brown bread and tea. Perhaps the wait was a little too long and when it arrived the brown baguette was soft, the chips expected were in fact crisps and the accompanying salad miniscule. The staff were very pleasant, cheerful and welcoming.Sanitary facilities are provided in a building opposite and appear to be run by the Council and were extremely clean.Thought it was a little on the expensive side at a fraction off £18.00.

There was hardly any vegetarian choice. We had missed the breakfast meal by 1 hour. I had the mozzarella panini which was dry - hardly any cheese, with a tiny side 'salad' and a few nacho type crisps (£6.50) . My partner couldn't see anything he wanted to eat so had a slice of carrot cake (£3.75) which he said was nice, so with 2 coffees it totalled £15.80. I'm not complaining about the price but if only there had been more veggie choice and the panini had been pleasant we would have been satisfied!!

Had lunch here recently. Very impressed by the way they are handling things during these crazy times. There were signs saying not to sit at tables until they were cleared. The staff wore visors, kept their distance and took contact details. It all felt very safe. The prawn sandwiches we ordered were delicious & packed full of prawns in seafood sauce with a tasty salad garnish and tortilla chips.

We frequent Dukes regularly and have been keen to support with both the takeaway and the coffee shop especially since Lockdown. They are a lovely bunch and although busy, are dealing with the new systems imposed by the Covid regulations well. The tables are cleaned, the service is fast, the instructions are clear and the service is always excellent, as is the food.Keep up the good work Team and Thank You for keeping us fed and watered. X

Waitress went over and above to accommodate my family of four esp when a gentleman decided over lunch time to sit at a table for four, forcing us to sit at two x 2 tables. I have seen laminated circles used at other places with a big tick and ready, please have a seat on one side and a bid red cross and not ready, do not use on the other side...Would this be useful for Dukes? Food and service is always excellent even when it's busy, and in spite of some rude customers!

We visited Duke’s for lunch today which we always do when we visit Tavistock. We visit at least 6 or 8 times a year and have done for the past 8 years. We have always enjoyed excellent food and customer service. However, today we sat at a table which had been vacated but not cleared and waited which we have done many times before, including during COVID. After a few minutes a member of staff who has worked there for the 8 years we have been visiting came across to our table and abruptly put down a sign in front of us which said something along the lines of “please wait until the table is cleared before seating”. The lady did not speak and her manner was anything but friendly. We were not the only table this happened to. We appreciate they have had to implement new procedures in the new environment we are all living in but the way it was done did not enhance our experience. Would it not be better to bring these signs out with food orders then when people finish and leave the table they will be there ready to advise the next customer of your procedures? The food was good, as always and we will continue to use Dukes as this was one negative experience in a long line of very positive ones which is probably why it took us by so much by surprise.

We visited Dukes's on the Eat out to Help out scheme for lunch; it was great that it was outdoor seating; the waitresses wore visors or kept the 2m distance so all fine and dandy there.I have to admit my first niggle was when we were told that we weren't allowed to put the umbrella up when it started to rain because of the strong wind.We were told that there were items that weren't available because of them having no sausages in stock (it turns out they hadn't had any sausages since Saturday, a whole 3 days after they run out). It would help if they took the sausage baguette off the specials board. It was a pleasant surprise after this when my Chilli con carne and basmati rice came out; they rice was cooked to perfection and the chilli just had the right amount of spice to it.

Well sorted for sitting outside safely even in wet weather. Plenty of people watching opportunities on market days. Flat white coffee really good.

Back for a weekend in Tavistock and popped in for lunch. They have installed colourful screens between a lot of their tables and the other tables are very well spaced. The staff are all wearing face PPE and cleaning tables, chairs, menus etc between customers. There was also hand sanitiser available for customer use. The food was brilliant, as usual, and came out very quickly given how busy it was. Credit to the staff who were working their socks off in exceptional heat! Well done again team Dukes, keep it up!!

Passed through Tavistock, hoped to find somewhere where we could sit outside (our preference during covid 19) and Duke's was perfect. Outside but with a canopy overhead. The loaded melts sounded interesting and glad we tried them as they looked and tasted amazing! As did the tuna, cheese, melt panini. Friendly staff, observing social distancing and wearing masks/visors. Brilliant, will definitely call again when in the area.

Good cafe. Clean toilets. Needs to get the parking area sorted out as the space needs to be optimised, picnic benches for people using it as a service station would be good.

I ordered the giant pasty as a treat but I think that was the wrong decision. The pastry was dry and the contents were minimal and not very tasty. When asked if everything was alright I told the lady about it and again when I paid the bill only to be given a stamped card for a free drink. I’ve had a few pasties in my time but this was undoubtedly the worst. Although the setting was reasonable I would not have the pasty from there.
