Service was 10/10. We asked for the steak as it was not advertised on the menu as we arrived fairly early on the day. There was no issues and they cooked the most perfect steak. The fish and chips was also a very strong 10/10. The crispy squid to start was the best I’ve ever had and both gentleman who were working on the day were fantastic and very welcoming. Honestly some of the best food I’ve eaten in the UK situated in a historic 13 century longhouse filled with culture.

He told us history of the building and folklore attatched to it! And reckonmended lovely Ciders that we hadn’t tried before. Deffo a place we will be back to and will come to try the food! 10/10 :)

Booked about 2pm, table for 6pm. Specifically asked for a nice table not near a toilet door. The person seemed more interested in taking our credit card details in case we didn't show up. Had never been here before, so did not know the layout. Arrived before 6 and was shown to our table, with a disabled toilet door directly behind me and a laundry room door ( so I was told ) also behind me. Sat down, the table was very small for two and the seats were hard and uncomfortable. Table No 24. The room was dark and cold, so much so that I went back to car to get my coat, it was warmer outside. Obviously no heating and was told no other tables available. I would say this was probably the worst and last table that we were unfortunate enough to book ! The waitress was very pleasant, professional. and charming. The meal arrived, my wife was very pleased with her pork and I with my cod. No problems with the food, except my mushy mint peas were not minty ! and my wife had too much cauliflower. By the time we had finished we were in a hurry to get back to some warmth in the car. The bill came and to my amazement a 10% service charge slapped on top of the expensive meal. My first ever experience of a service charge in a pub for two people. £60.39 for two main courses and two drinks ! A local tonic for £3 to go with her gin ( my wife the previous day bought a pack of 8 Fevertree tonics for £4.50 in Tesco ) the mark up must be incredible ! Main meals over priced £24 and £19. Obviously explained to the waitress, who completely understood, I was not going to pay the service charge after such an experience. These people must be on a different planet. There are much better places to eat and far better value. Part of a dining out experience is the ambiance ! This was awful. Definitely NOT RECOMMENDED.

I enjoyed a fabulous stay which started with an excellent lunch and catch up with one of my hospitality contacts. There is a bridal path at the end of the car park that leads up to the moor and is enchantingly pretty. My room ( The Hayloft) was spacious and very comfortable with a fabulous view over the garden to the moor. Dinner was exceptional with fabulous food and charming ambience. A huge thank you to Lisa and her team for providing wonderful hospitality and a special mention for Stevie who understands customer experience. Highly recommended. Tell them I sent you!

The culinary team clearly knows their stuff and it was a sense of pride that although remote, a place that can impress an international chef with the techniques, provenance and visual appeal of the food! I booked this stay last minute, as my partner and three boys were camping in Dartmoor, and as I don’t camp, I thought I would book this place after a full day hiking. I couldn’t wait to get to the hotel to have some dinner in the restaurant, wash and go straight to bed, to then go hiking again the next day. I arrived at 20:00 and checked in, by the time I checked in, I asked if I could order some food, I was told that the kitchen is closed now, I nearly cried, but the young Gentleman went to the kitchen to see if they would accommodate me, I was told that I could have chips only, now I love chips, but after 9 hours of hiking I wanted something better and more substantial then just chips , I thought this was very poor after spending nearly £100 to spend the night here and couldn’t even eat at the restaurant. I then went on and asked if he could recommend anywhere else I could go and eat (this really wasn’t what I wanted to do after been soaked through and sore) but was told he couldn’t tell me anywhere else to eat, but directed me to the shell garage. The young Gentleman then asked if I would like breakfast in the morning, I thought that would be lovely, and said yes please can I have it for 7am, which I was then told no, sorry only from 08:15, I then asked if I could have this early, as I would be well gone by then, as starting early tomorrow on our hike, I was then told no, I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry.

Went out for a pre booked special meal. Friendly welcome upon arrival. We were early so understood our table was not ready. However, we had to wait 20 minutes after our allotted slot. Two of our guests were coeliac's and when the food arrived, the cauliflower cheese was substituted for plain cauliflower and no alternative yorkshire provided. We were however, charged the same amount for both dishes. In today's world, there is no excuse for catering for coeliac's with bland substitutes or just removing an item off a plate altogether. The "mega" roast, charged at £2 more than the beef roast, was the same size as the other roasts, but contained one slice of each meat. On a positive note, the beef was cooked beautifully and gravy was tasty. We like al dente vegetables but the cauliflower was undercooked and rock hard. Our waitress went on a break after giving us our pudding menus and we were forgotten about by the other staff. After waiting 30 minutes, we had to go to the bar to ask for our pudding order to be taken. We decided not to bother with coffees. In our opinion, if you are charging prices higher than other establishments the food and service should be reflected in this. All in all, a very underwhelming experience, not to be repeated.

The portion sizes for Sunday roast are a joke, they are more like half portion sizes and especially when you paying £20 plus per meal. We also brought it to the waitresses attention that the meals weren't great and the waitress didn't even care. This establishment also deletes negative reviews on Google instead of trying to resolve the issue with their customers. So much for customer service or feedback.

My partner and I spent a night at Bearslake Inn and it was fabulous! From the moment we arrived the staff were so wonderfully helpful. The roast dinner we had as absolutely gorgeous (the best my partner had in a pub were his exact words) and their signature chocolate bar almost had me melting in my chair! It's a charming place that has a lovely decor without sacrificing the charm of this grade 2 listed building. We had a lovely night and would gladly stay again but the food, the helpful staff and the love and care that went into the cooking makes this place a fabulous getaway!

We stopped very last minute and very late on Sunday, they were happy to help us despite the kitchen being about to close. The service was fabulous but that didn’t come close to the food which was incredible. The roast beef really was outstanding (rare sirloin and braised beef) it came with perfectly cooked veg - hubby involuntarily made a ‘mmm’ noise when he tried it (& he always eats it first to get it out of the was because he never enjoys it), yummy cauliflower cheese, fluffy roasties and really meaty proper gravy. We shared a delicious sticky toffee pud after. The atmosphere was great, cosy and homely. My only very slight negative was that it dawned on me on the way home that a pint of ‘top’ had been charged as a full pint of beer plus the lemonade splash at an extra cost of £1; it seems a bit cheeky as there was just a pint in the glass in total and lemonade is cheaper than beer, I’ve never seen that before Just a note, a standard service charge is added to the bill, which they do make clear on the menu. I’d absolutely come back in a heartbeat it was outstanding!

The staff were gracious enough to squeeze my wife and I in on the return home from an otherwise disappointing 'foodie' weekend away, and the meal and overall experience was excellent. Really excellent. Redeeming the weekend. I genuinely can't recall a better roast dinner! And this is out of thousands over the decades. Truly it's that good. And roast dinners are something we're all fussy about. The staff were very attentive and friendly but unobtrusively so, with the whole place immensely likeable. And the setting, a thirteenth century thatched pub, is the sort of place that would make even my most german of german relatives wistful for Merry Old England. Fantasy stuff really and a place that deserves showing off about nationally and internationally. I'm sure they'll have many awards soon. Oh, and try the sticky toffee pudding. Exceptional. You won't really have room after the more than generous roast, but given the weight of history and British tradition all around it's important to try.

A warm, smiley welcome from Stevie, at this cosy, quirky Inn, with plenty of parking and pretty garden with a stream. Nothing was too much trouble from any of the staff. The menu had plenty of choice for each course, it all sounded so good too, wanted to try it all! Gorgeously presented dishes, a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds. It all tasted amazing, so full of flavour, and generous portions. The ingredients where of the best quality and the finishing touches added to each course. I don’t normally leave reviews but I have just returned home after a lovely lunch at the Bearslake Inn. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we walked up to the bar and the fact that we had a voucher did not deter from the exceptional service we received. A lovely lady called Stevie served our table, helping to make suggestions and informing us of her favourites on the menu, even persuading my husband to take a desert home with him for later because it was included on our deal. (How many would do that) The liver parfait was silky smooth, the brisket topping the best beef burger made a first class main course and really crisp tasty chips to accompany ( I’m not a chip lover but I’d have another portion of these)!. Great location for walking so if you are planning a visit during the summer months I would strongly advise that you book. Dog friendly too. We are already planning to return with ours for a lovely long walk across town the moor before settling to more of their fantastic food and possibly an overnight stay if there are one too many consumed. The perfect way to spend a rainy day in March. Thank you all, your pub deserves to survive and to anyone who reads this review- visit and experience it for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

We both enjoyed our lunch, good quality food and well cooked. At the start of the meal we were given a bottle of still water. We had not ordered this and I was surprised to see that we were later charged for it, the natural assumption being that it was complimentary. Again an enjoyable meal in a dining area which had a certain ambience albeit rather cold. When I paid it was confirmed that cash wasn't acceptable. I also declined to pay the 10% service charge in that I feel that tips should be a discretionary affair not added to the bill automatically.

We met here having travelled from various parts of the south-west. We arrived before the restaurant opened so had to wait outside for quarter of an hour. Frustrating not to be able to sit down or have a coffee before lunch. When we went in we had been hoping to sit outside as it was a nice day however the garden was not open so we had to sit in the restaurant. We were all given two menus, a set menu and an a la carte. We were then told that if we didn’t all 6 of us have the set menu , no one could have it, and as one of our party didn’t want it we were back to a la carte. A very strange state of affairs. One of our party wanted a simple salad as an alternative starter but as it was’t on the menu the chef couldn’t do it. Almost all of the main dishes came served in bread of some sort, even the sausage dish, it was quite a surprise. Despite having a selection of taps on the bar, the only lagers available were local ones. It appeared that the dessert dish had been heated for too long and so became rubbery as it was being eaten. All in all not a very satisfactory visit at reasonably high prices, not somewhere I would visit again. To summarise it appears that the restaurant is run for the convenience of the staff rather than for the customers.

I went there for lunch, the food was perfectly cooked. The bread was absolutely stunning and the butter was incredible which they make inhouse. The fish was perfectly cooked and very good portion sizes. The house itself is kept at a very high standard and very well maintained. The staff were very pleasant and very friendly and professional. Also they take covid very serious there and I felt very satisfied. I cant recommend this place enough absolutely brilliant. Also they have a brilliant bar with a fantastic selection of drinks, which alot are local brands which is very important to help the local businesses.

I won’t lie I was quite apprehensive about visiting after reading some of the reviews on here. All I can say is we loved it at the Bearslake There are rules to follow because of covid and all places have to adopt them. You get out what you put in and we were polite courteous and understanding and the owners and staff couldn’t have done more for us they were first classNathan and Amy were amazing they looked after us made us feel welcome and special during our 2 night wedding anniversary stay Thank you Lisa for calling up to our room with poppy so that jo could have a cuddle with your dog in her pjs it made her night. I’d go as far to say as the dinner was one of the best meals we’ve ever had in a restaurant we absolutely loved it The place itself is great room was clean and in good order and the views were more than we’d ever want Thank you for making our weekend so special and all the best of luck for the next lockdown we will be back to see you in the new year for sure

En route to Cornwall for holiday - a friend had recommended a nearby pub for its quirkiness but it was closed - fortunately I had been browsing TA the night before and had seen the reviews for Bearslake - so as we were driving away from the closed pub, I spotted the Bearslake and we pulled in. We were pleasantly welcomed in the bar - but a little bit early for lunch, so we sat with a drink in the restaurant area browsing a very nice menu. Nathan, the Restaurant manager / waiter was chatty and informative. Took our order quite quickly and we didn't have long to wait for delicious, piping hot food (as my wife says - with chips that actually tasted like potatoes). A real find. We will recommend to our friends who caravan not far away!

We visited for lunch today, booked on line, easy to do and confirmed in seconds. Had Scallops as starter which were just stunning and wife had Beer Battered Cod and I had the Brixham Whole Plaice. Whilst we live locally have not visited this lovely Inn for some time, we also have a holiday home in Padstow so often visit some of the lovely fish restaraunts there. However, got to say that NONE of them could have produced better or fresher fish dishes than your Chef produced today. They were excellent. Staff equally friendly and helpful and made us feel safe and secure during these difficult times.Thank you and be assured we will return.

My husband, my dog and I have just spent a very enjoyable week here. Great location, and very easy to get to all parts of Devon easily. The setting is stunning. The rooms simple, (although a great size) but functional and fantastic views. The water pressure in the shower was great. Visiting in Covid meant there were lots of restrictions, this did not however impact our stay as we were informed prior to booking of all the restrictions and requirements. I felt that the rules and requirements for a safe visit were well met.If we needed anything we just needed to ask and it was never too much trouble for Lisa and Julian. One thing that definitely stood out for us was the quality of the food. The standard very good, the service, very friendly, Nathan was very professional and helpful. We celebrated our first anniversary here and were definitely not disappointed. The quality of meat and also how it was cooked was excellent. Make sure you leave room for dessert. I look forward to a revisit next year. Thanks for making our stay special.

Awful rudeness and in my entire 25years of travel have never experienced management so unpleasant hiding behind a mask, a screen and barking at guests - as it seems others have pointed out. Should have read reviews. Arrived in a storm with bikes and children after cycling 100miles across Dorset and Devon. Knocked on the door at 4.48pm to be greeted with 'we dont open until 5pm'. We had booked a month ago and paid in advance. Then the children were barked at to close the door even though we were still unloading bags off bikes. There was no space for dinner. We could only have one meal, all have the same thing and it had to be fish and chips and had to be at 6pm. They were 'over-capacity' though our table remained empty all night. They wouldn't entertain a discussion about a salad or conjuring up an easy quick alternative that the chef might accommodate 'we dont have salad stuff in'. No, no and no. So inflexible. After a cold water shower and an early dinner that was average a perplexed and embarrassed waitress was sent to tell us that we couldn't have dessert until everyone else in the restaurant had decided theirs in case we denied them the chance of their favourite. We only wanted 1 dessert. But hang on, we hadn't booked late. I had called 3 days before and left a message, confirming the booking, bikes, dinner for 7pm etc I was told by the manager that I hadnt and i couldnt even show her on my phone as I scrolled through - and then I found the call record , at that point and to save face she threatened to throw us out, with children and only bikes for transport in the dark at 8pm at night. It might have been a better option. We cycled 100miles across Dorset and Devon and places had been so welcoming and are trying hard to adapt to Covid restrictions. Not this place. Signs everywhere to turn heating down, no logfires lit, we were treated as an inconvenience not a guest. Trying to understaff and squeeze every penny out of guests and diners and are using Covid or 'protect the environment' as their reason. Providing a thoroughly inhospitable service, truly the worst I have ever experienced. It's an old building with character, but these places need warmth - either from heating and fires and certainly from management. This had neither. "We don't open until 5pm. Shut that door. You didn't tell us you were bringing bikes. You have to have fish and chips at 6pm." The first four sentences uttered to us as a family as we arrived wet, cold and tired. So unwelcoming and rude.

Lisa, you are in the hospitality industry. Please note, the dictionary defines hospitality as ‘the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.’But this is how you greeted us: we rang ahead to say that our car had broken down and had been taken off to a garage, could we have some taxi numbers, and also book a table in the restaurant for that evening as we no longer had a car. When we finally arrived, masked, we were barked at from behind your visor, behind your screen, “Oh, you’re here. Stay behind the line! Don’t come any closer! Someone will show you to your room.”So we waited, and eventually a young lad appeared who had clearly been trained at the same charm school, didn’t offer any help with our bags, led us through the hotel and out of the back to where the accommodation was, making sure to warn us that the door from the hotel would be locked and alarmed at 10pm, and that if we opened it and set the alarm off we would be FINED. In fact, you seem to be awfully keen on threatening fines. Before we arrived, we had received information that, should evidence be found that we had brought alcohol onto the premises not from the bar, we would be FINED: £30 for ‘corkage’ on a bottle of spirits, £10 for a bottle of wine and £5 for a bottle of beer. So we ate in your desolate restaurant that evening, on tables empty of anything that would make them welcoming (the pub we had stopped at for lunch had flowers on every table), to a sound system that, bizarrely, thought that Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’, and Deep Purple were what people wanted to listen to during dinner. We asked for a wine list – you didn’t have one, but the waiter rattled off four whites and four reds which I was expected to remember and choose from. The food was okay – my plaice was fine, but £4 for a tiny bowl of bitter kale drizzled with hazelnut oil was a bit steep. And if we wanted breakfast it had to be ordered and delivered to our room, we couldn’t eat in the restaurant. Why? If guests can use the dining room for lunch and dinner, why not a buffet breakfast? So, basically, with the door to the hotel locked and alarmed from 10pm and no dining room open for breakfast, we were confined to our rooms until we had consumed our breakfast. We decided to save some of our breakfast for later, but, alas, on returning it had vanished. This, in spite of being told that our rooms wouldn’t be made up during our stay to ‘protect housekeeping staff’. But it was fine for some member of staff to enter the room to swipe the remains of our breakfast… Hmmm. Don’t quite see the logic of that.Check out was remote as well. The bill was emailed to us before departure so we could pay via a link. But what really took the biscuit was that you took the cost of our visit from our bank account a full TEN days before we actually arrived for our unfortunate stay.

The restaurant is in a beautiful setting, we were really looking forward to a special Anniversary meal and were very excited. It was a Sunday (roast dinner day) They had no children's menu. The waitress said they can do half portions. So we asked for a half portion of scampi and chips. The waitress told us my daughter could only have a half portion roast dinner. NOT MUCH CHOICE FOR A NINE YEAR OLD! so my daughter opted for a starters of pate for her main meal. My husband opted for a beef roast and i had the scampi with triple cooked chips. My daughters pate was a large portion and she enjoyed it but couldn't eat it all. My husband said his roast was amazing. My scampi, triple cooked chips and thimble full of mushy peas was not!!! The triple cooked chips turned out to be skin on wedges. As i started eating them I could hear a crunching sound like grit, I called the waitress over and said I couldn't eat the chips as they were gritty like they hadn't been washed before they cooked them. She went to talk to the kitchen. on her return to our table she walked to another table and handed the lady a plastic container with some food in it ( I guessed it was a doggy bag). Great idea I thought we can take the giant piece of pate home with us. I asked for a container to take home the left over pate. She went off to ask the kitchen. She came back to our table and took the pate plate away. I assumed to put the pate in a take away container. As she returned to the table I was shocked as she said there was nothing the kitchen could do about the "triple cooked chips" they are bought in like that! (they obviously were not triple cooked chips if they bought them in) So all I ate were 9 pieces of scampi and a thimble full of mushy peas not the lovely Anniversary meal we were hoping for at all. At this point we had had enough and asked for the bill and my daughters pate, she came back with the bill 20 mins later. I then asked if they could take the price of the chips off the bill. Again she went off to the kitchen to ask. 30 mins later the waitress returned with the card machine so my husband could pay. I asked where the pate was and she said they don't do doggy bags because of the covid situation. What the hell that means I don't know but it was good enough for the lady on the other table!. Then I asked if she asked the kitchen about the triple cooked chips. she said she forgot! We paid the bill and left hungry and disappointed. The waitress waitress was useless and the kitchen staff very unhelpful. We wont be returning.

Fabulous Sunday lunch today, not visited before but often seen from road. One way system and well spaced tables, clear signage and organised staff but you don’t feel overwhelmed with the measures it’s all discreetly observed. Food delicious we had three meat roast and the vegetarian roast which looked yummy even to a carnivore. Be sure to save room for the instagram worthy deserts. Well priced given the quality. Booking for next month with older more anxious relatives now we have visited and have confidence. Thank-you

Booking a table is too cumbersome - insisted on card details including security number. Varied menu but food was luke warm. Pork loin (£18) excluded potatoes (additional £3) and "seasonal greens" consisted of two small cabbage leaves and a baby leek. Deer loin (£22) was incredibly small. The beers (Dragon's Breath and Crispy Pig) were good and service reasonably quick. Pleasant dining room with subdued atmosphere. Deep pot holes in car park. Overall, not a satisfactory experrience.

After a decent walk we dropped into the Bearslake for the first time in many months. Decaff coffee can vary hugely, but very impressed with the coffee here. Ate here tonight and had to post a review. Food and service were excellent. We had crab and soup starters, duck and pork mains and sticky toffee pudding and pistachio cake for dessert. Everything was delicious, the staff were friendly and it was a real treat to eat here. It is really clear how much restaurants are suffering during Covid and they all need our support. I can thoroughly recommend The Bearslake Inn

Some of the reviews below are fantastic, others report unfriendly front of house and average food. Unfortunately we experienced the latter. No welcome, put in small room with a large (6) noisy, party close together. Lovely waitress acknowledged the problem and apologies if sed. Food ok though most pubs do manage to provide vinegar with chips! The guy apparently in charge was very surely. Upset by the experience.
