Arrived at this pub on a wet and windy night and it was in darkness! Power failure. We were made welcome and brought drinks while we waited for power to be restored. Lovely meal and great service. Pub was decorated ready for Christmas and had a lovely atmosphere.

I've driven passed this place hundreds of times on the way to visit my family and the car park is always full which is usually a good sign. I wasn't disappointed. I booked the two course menu as a thank you to my parents for dog sitting. I had the normal menu. The staff are very friendly, professional and attentive. The atmosphere and decoration was lovely, very welcoming, relaxed and somewhat homely. The food was lovely, nice portion sizes, my Dad loved the soup to start, me and my Mum loved the stout cake absolutely delicious! We'll definitely be back again. I enjoy cooking so in current times often choose to stay home as it's cheaper and nicer to cook yourself as you don't know what you'll out get but there's nothing hit n miss about this place, I was pleasantly surprised. I'd gladly come here over and over again to eat! As a bonus they're dog friendly too!

Went for lunch. Called and booked ahead and they were very accommodating (seat by the fire as we were walking there) Food was served promptly and was delicious. Well priced. Faultless service and the Top Sail was an excellent pint. Will be back! Unfortunately had to amend this review. Went again today and things have changed. Found the entire experience distinctly average. Kids meals are £12. That includes a single scoop of ice cream though so the two chicken goujons, with fries and peas along with a disappointing burger and fries was a bit much. I had the steak. £24 for 6oz and it was a small 6oz steak with 'peppercorn sauce' with no peppercorns and no taste either. The ham egg and chips was good but £100 for two adults and two kids is alot. Mandatory service charge of 10%, apple juice for £4.20 and orange juice and lemonade for £4.80. Not great value and average service. A real shame.

Drove out to the Bearslake Inn as we'd not visited for several years. We were hoping to get a lunchtime bar snack or sandwich but were disappointed. They no longer serve a bar snacks style lunch menu and even more disappointing was the absence of any vegan options. We had ordered two ginger beers and were served hot ones. We also requested some tap water but this never arrived. Perusing the menu with our drinks we realised that we had made an error coming to the Bearslake. We finished our drinks, paid the princely sum of £9.57 for them and left. It may be several years before we contemplate returning, if at all.

Pub is an attractive charming building; Food was very good indeed; wine was excellent and fairly priced and beer was well kept. So why only 4 stars?.......Ambience. A pleasant enough atmosphere with attentive and friendly staff; nonetheless the "bar" area was a little sterile. Rather like a cotswold pub. The reason I believe is it lacks the welcoming, friendly Hubbub of locals chatting at the bar. It is a bar in name only, as there are no bar stools or chairs; only 3 tables all for diners (like us). One can't have a pre meal pint at the bar and beers are served at your table. This time of year with plenty of tourists around it isn't too much of a problem; but it may well be in the winter months. I think it is missing a trick here. Nonetheless we shall certainly be returning for the reasons outlined earlier. The fish n chips were superb, as was the sea bass. Pricing was just about fair for food and very reasonable for the excellent wine. We had a very pleasant evening and enjoyed the best food we've eaten here (we hadn't been since covid times). Thankfully the music was of a gentle kind and played at a sensible volume. All in all a lovely spot for a meal.

What a wonderful stay! fabulous food, drinks and the warmest hospitality. I booked and overnight stay with my girlfriend and dog. Yes the pub is incredibly dog friendly and they went above and beyond to make her feel welcome. We stayed in the hayloft which had incredible views across the rolling hills of Dartmoor. The room was incredibly comfortable and so peaceful. The pub is steeped in history and parts of it date back to the 13th century so expect low ceilings, wooden beams and joists, plenty of fireplaces and cosy characterful places to eat and drink. I started off with a pint of local beer and cider along with some olives and house made focaccia. The menu had a good selection and balance of locally sourced ingredients and dishes created form scratch by the kitchen team. The duo of Lydford Deer, roscoff onions, smoked mash and the Bearslake Signature chocolate bar were the highlights but all of the dishes were deliciously tasty. After a good nights sleep a continental breakfast hamper was delivered to the room of which gave us some extra time in bed before departing to enjoy the local farmers market in the nearby town of Tavistock. A delightful stay of which i cannot recommend highly enough.

Really disappointing visit, came here for a roast dinner last weekend and were given really small portions for veg and cauliflower cheese between 4 of us, could see we had the same portion as a couple next to us, we weren't able to share between 4 as we didn't have enough so politely asked for some more veg and after that the attitude really wasn't friendly even though we asked politely. They charged for the extra veg and added a service charge, we paid for the extra veg but didn't want to also pay the service change so I stated exactly how much I wanted to pay on my card, used contactless and when I checked after, they had actually charged me more that I had stated, not the amount I specified, which is quite dishonest, if it was an error they should have mentioned this to me. When we were asked, we did feedback about this, again really politely, and the waitress said oh okay and that was it, no attempt to talk about this further. Felt really quite unwelcome after that, I've never really had an experience like this before, so won't be returning. Other than this, beautiful location and the food was delicious and I can't fault the food at all. Would have appreciated the chance for the manager to speak to us diplomatically about the feedback, however the waitress didn't seem to want to ask anymore. To add, as soon as we sat down, we were told where we can and can't go which was just odd, I've never had rules explained to me like this when at a restaurant, I think a sign in front of certain doors or an alternative solution would have been a lot better than being sat down and told a list of rules.

Booked about 2pm, table for 6pm. Specifically asked for a nice table not near a toilet door. The person seemed more interested in taking our credit card details in case we didn't show up. Had never been here before, so did not know the layout. Arrived before 6 and was shown to our table, with a disabled toilet door directly behind me and a laundry room door ( so I was told ) also behind me. Sat down, the table was very small for two and the seats were hard and uncomfortable. Table No 24. The room was dark and cold, so much so that I went back to car to get my coat, it was warmer outside. Obviously no heating and was told no other tables available. I would say this was probably the worst and last table that we were unfortunate enough to book ! The waitress was very pleasant, professional. and charming. The meal arrived, my wife was very pleased with her pork and I with my cod. No problems with the food, except my mushy mint peas were not minty ! and my wife had too much cauliflower. By the time we had finished we were in a hurry to get back to some warmth in the car. The bill came and to my amazement a 10% service charge slapped on top of the expensive meal. My first ever experience of a service charge in a pub for two people. £60.39 for two main courses and two drinks ! A local tonic for £3 to go with her gin ( my wife the previous day bought a pack of 8 Fevertree tonics for £4.50 in Tesco ) the mark up must be incredible ! Main meals over priced £24 and £19. Obviously explained to the waitress, who completely understood, I was not going to pay the service charge after such an experience. These people must be on a different planet. There are much better places to eat and far better value. Part of a dining out experience is the ambiance ! This was awful. Definitely NOT RECOMMENDED.

I booked this stay last minute, as my partner and three boys were camping in Dartmoor, and as I don’t camp, I thought I would book this place after a full day hiking. I couldn’t wait to get to the hotel to have some dinner in the restaurant, wash and go straight to bed, to then go hiking again the next day. I arrived at 20:00 and checked in, by the time I checked in, I asked if I could order some food, I was told that the kitchen is closed now, I nearly cried, but the young Gentleman went to the kitchen to see if they would accommodate me, I was told that I could have chips only, now I love chips, but after 9 hours of hiking I wanted something better and more substantial then just chips , I thought this was very poor after spending nearly £100 to spend the night here and couldn’t even eat at the restaurant. I then went on and asked if he could recommend anywhere else I could go and eat (this really wasn’t what I wanted to do after been soaked through and sore) but was told he couldn’t tell me anywhere else to eat, but directed me to the shell garage. The young Gentleman then asked if I would like breakfast in the morning, I thought that would be lovely, and said yes please can I have it for 7am, which I was then told no, sorry only from 08:15, I then asked if I could have this early, as I would be well gone by then, as starting early tomorrow on our hike, I was then told no, I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry.

Went out for a pre booked special meal. Friendly welcome upon arrival. We were early so understood our table was not ready. However, we had to wait 20 minutes after our allotted slot. Two of our guests were coeliac's and when the food arrived, the cauliflower cheese was substituted for plain cauliflower and no alternative yorkshire provided. We were however, charged the same amount for both dishes. In today's world, there is no excuse for catering for coeliac's with bland substitutes or just removing an item off a plate altogether. The "mega" roast, charged at £2 more than the beef roast, was the same size as the other roasts, but contained one slice of each meat. On a positive note, the beef was cooked beautifully and gravy was tasty. We like al dente vegetables but the cauliflower was undercooked and rock hard. Our waitress went on a break after giving us our pudding menus and we were forgotten about by the other staff. After waiting 30 minutes, we had to go to the bar to ask for our pudding order to be taken. We decided not to bother with coffees. In our opinion, if you are charging prices higher than other establishments the food and service should be reflected in this. All in all, a very underwhelming experience, not to be repeated.

The portion sizes for Sunday roast are a joke, they are more like half portion sizes and especially when you paying £20 plus per meal. We also brought it to the waitresses attention that the meals weren't great and the waitress didn't even care. This establishment also deletes negative reviews on Google instead of trying to resolve the issue with their customers. So much for customer service or feedback.

An excellent evening for a gathering of ten of us where we enjoyed delicious, well cooked and healthy but not overlarge portions. Service was discrete and efficient by confident young staff. Only disappointment was very limited choice of real ale

My partner and I spent a night at Bearslake Inn and it was fabulous! From the moment we arrived the staff were so wonderfully helpful. The roast dinner we had as absolutely gorgeous (the best my partner had in a pub were his exact words) and their signature chocolate bar almost had me melting in my chair! It's a charming place that has a lovely decor without sacrificing the charm of this grade 2 listed building. We had a lovely night and would gladly stay again but the food, the helpful staff and the love and care that went into the cooking makes this place a fabulous getaway!

We hadn’t been to the Bearslake for years, and went for lunch with close friends on 22/3/24, and had a superb meal. The service was impeccable with a warm initial greeting from front of house and truly attentive but not invasive table waiting from very knowledgeable and charming staff. Each course was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented at the ideal pace and timing. We’ll definitely be going again.

We stopped very last minute and very late on Sunday, they were happy to help us despite the kitchen being about to close. The service was fabulous but that didn’t come close to the food which was incredible. The roast beef really was outstanding (rare sirloin and braised beef) it came with perfectly cooked veg - hubby involuntarily made a ‘mmm’ noise when he tried it (& he always eats it first to get it out of the was because he never enjoys it), yummy cauliflower cheese, fluffy roasties and really meaty proper gravy. We shared a delicious sticky toffee pud after. The atmosphere was great, cosy and homely. My only very slight negative was that it dawned on me on the way home that a pint of ‘top’ had been charged as a full pint of beer plus the lemonade splash at an extra cost of £1; it seems a bit cheeky as there was just a pint in the glass in total and lemonade is cheaper than beer, I’ve never seen that before Just a note, a standard service charge is added to the bill, which they do make clear on the menu. I’d absolutely come back in a heartbeat it was outstanding!

The staff were gracious enough to squeeze my wife and I in on the return home from an otherwise disappointing 'foodie' weekend away, and the meal and overall experience was excellent. Really excellent. Redeeming the weekend. I genuinely can't recall a better roast dinner! And this is out of thousands over the decades. Truly it's that good. And roast dinners are something we're all fussy about. The staff were very attentive and friendly but unobtrusively so, with the whole place immensely likeable. And the setting, a thirteenth century thatched pub, is the sort of place that would make even my most german of german relatives wistful for Merry Old England. Fantasy stuff really and a place that deserves showing off about nationally and internationally. I'm sure they'll have many awards soon. Oh, and try the sticky toffee pudding. Exceptional. You won't really have room after the more than generous roast, but given the weight of history and British tradition all around it's important to try.

My brother’s wake was held at the Bearslake Inn. We could not have had a warmer reception where everything flowed smoothly. Lisa, Simon, the chefs and waiting staff could not have been more helpful. The Inn is in a perfect position for travelling family and friends without being on a major road. The property and gardens are great for a weekday lunch, or any event. Suffice to say we will be returning again u dear happier circumstances to enjoy the quality of the food, ambience and service, combined with classic old style features. Thank you to all the team.

We went to the bearslake inn to have a cream tea last minute to celebrate our engagement and the team was superb very kind and attention to the details! They offer us some sweets in a cute bag as a congratulations gift which we find very kind of them. Everyone was kind but we would like to emphasise Simon work and attention to us making sure everything was nice for me and my fiancé!! The food and cream tea were delicious. Very welcoming space! The only down side was the rain!!! But well not their fault, just British weather being British weather! 😂

I don’t normally leave reviews but I have just returned home after a lovely lunch at the Bearslake Inn. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we walked up to the bar and the fact that we had a voucher did not deter from the exceptional service we received. A lovely lady called Stevie served our table, helping to make suggestions and informing us of her favourites on the menu, even persuading my husband to take a desert home with him for later because it was included on our deal. (How many would do that) The liver parfait was silky smooth, the brisket topping the best beef burger made a first class main course and really crisp tasty chips to accompany ( I’m not a chip lover but I’d have another portion of these)!. Great location for walking so if you are planning a visit during the summer months I would strongly advise that you book. Dog friendly too. We are already planning to return with ours for a lovely long walk across town the moor before settling to more of their fantastic food and possibly an overnight stay if there are one too many consumed. The perfect way to spend a rainy day in March. Thank you all, your pub deserves to survive and to anyone who reads this review- visit and experience it for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

Fabulous food served by friendly staff! Visited for a weekday lunch as a couple, it was recommended by friends who had visited, and it didn't disappoint. A warm, smiley welcome from Stevie, at this cosy, quirky Inn, with plenty of parking and pretty garden with a stream. Nothing was too much trouble from any of the staff. The menu had plenty of choice for each course, it all sounded so good too, wanted to try it all! Gorgeously presented dishes, a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds. It all tasted amazing, so full of flavour, and generous portions. The ingredients where of the best quality and the finishing touches added to each course. Will definitely be back, even though we live nearly an hour away. Highly recommend.

We both enjoyed our lunch, good quality food and well cooked. At the start of the meal we were given a bottle of still water. We had not ordered this and I was surprised to see that we were later charged for it, the natural assumption being that it was complimentary. Again an enjoyable meal in a dining area which had a certain ambience albeit rather cold. When I paid it was confirmed that cash wasn't acceptable. I also declined to pay the 10% service charge in that I feel that tips should be a discretionary affair not added to the bill automatically.

Such a beautiful little location in Dartmoor, we arrived after an extremely muddy wet walk with our two dogs and despite being soaking wet and covered in mud, we were welcomed with open arms. We asked for a quiet table as our dogs can be quite excited, they listened perfectly and we even had dog treats waiting at the table; such a lovely little touch. The food was outstanding, what a talented chef! We had the seabream, truffle fries and 2 gorgeous deserts.

Food was amazing. We were gifted a travel Zoo voucher and to be honest most meals were supplemented but this was made clear on the voucher so this did not bother us at all. We had whatever we wished and still only paid around £30 extra which included a wine and a pale ale so not bad value at all. The food really was outstanding !

No draught lager, so a pint of shandy cost £6 as you had to pay for a bottle of lager and a lemonade Carvery itself was underwhelming. Frozen Yorkshire puddings are always a bit of a let down. £16 for a large roast dinner which wasn't particularly large. It just meant you can have 2 of the 4 meats (1 slice of each) Beef overcooked, pork looked very fatty. Turkey was ok. Cauliflower cheese was raw. Gravy wasn't very good. Roast potatoes looked deep fried and weren't very nice. The leek gratin was very nice though. Wouldn't go again unfortunately.

Had an amazing Sunday roast here - service was fab and pub was warm and cosy. I've only knocked a star off as I paid £6.40 for a can of 0.0 guinness and half a lime and soda - which seems quite highly priced
