The Rock Inn in West Devon

We’ve eaten here on several occasions over the years and never been disappointed. This time we were accompanied by our son’s family. All our meals were exceptional and, in particular, the lasagne which came with chips and a lovely salad, and the steak & ale pie which was amazing. Thoroughly recommended!

The Rock is an above average pub. The food is fine, pretty good standard pub grub. Prices are a little higher than some other pubs around. There's not the biggest selection of beers but there's usually a couple of local ales on tap and a good range of other drinks. The biggest thing going for the Rock is that it's a big pub so there's often a table and the couple of different bars means there's a range of atmospheres. The restaurant at the front is smarter or there's a more relaxed bar in the back. I wouldn't go out of my way to come, but equally if it's at the end of a walk or ride then you can't go far wrong here.

Beautiful old pub, done out really smartly with really friendly and helpful staff. A great old fortress-like building. I have to say that I thought the food was poor though. Mains are £14-20; my burger was totally tasteless and my wife said the fish and chips were better in Wetherspoons!

It's a good pub... it doesn't always feel as though the key staff have the best people skills... but that may just be me. Have to say that my last meal up there was very good. It seems to have come up a notch. Beers and drinks, I'd say, are top end in terms of pricing. BUT, it is still going ... for that one has to be thankful. Wrt atmosphere, it, like any other pub is, a bit hit and miss. With 4 reception areas, it does take some filling for the atmosphere to generate, but when it is good, it is good. The pub does put on a very good music festival each year in the summer.

Friendly service & a nice atmosphere, however the food was pretty average & not worth the price in my opinion. Salmon dry & pretty tasteless, also a bit minimalist! Burger was certainly average, thin dried out & in a bun with a bit of basic salad, came with chips that were bordering on undercooked. Decided not to bother with desserts after that, shame.

Up here for Sunday dinner,some dishes were better than others,drinks a bit costly,place was busy so a bit of a wait but overall it wasn't too bad

The food here is top notch. I just can't risk trying anything else on the menu because the steak and ale pie is so good!! And as I have discovered yesterday, the bread and butter pudding is probably the greatest food I have EVER tasted. Service was excellent and atmosphere perfect.

Usually a fantastic food, great service and great atmosphere and I highly rate the fish and chips and Ploughman’s, although the burgers are not advisable just not on par with the other food we have had here although always very friendly and welcoming staff

Such a wonderful pub! The service and atmosphere is impeccable; perfect place for Sunday lunch. Portions are generous without being too much and the quality of the food is second to none. I’ll definitely be back 😊

Lovely meal. 3 of us all had something different and all enjoyed the food. Waitress was lovely.

Was very apprehensive about going out for dinner on a Tuesday night for a birthday celebration in the middle of the moors but was very pleasantly surprised. I thought we would be the only ones there but not the case, almost every table was taken and it was a really nice atmosphere. Staff were extremely friendly and we even had table service for our drinks! Food was really good too with a couple of specials available. I had the pork belly which was delicious and hot. Others on our table had the steak pie and chips which was a really good portion and they had nothing but praise. Have to say it was a really nice evening with great food - we will definitely return

Use the Rock quite a lot, sometimes for drinks and sometimes for food and drink. Food is always good well prepared and well presented. Went for lunch with two friends. They had a couple of specials on the Menu. Two of us went for the Hunters chicken, it was delicious, instead of the cheese on the top of the chicken breast it was inside the chicken and just the bacon on the top. Hope this is on the menu more. The other two had curry of the day, Chicken, you could have this as a smaller portion, which my husband did and found this far big enough for lunch. Will visit again soon.

Never eaten here but it's a great cycling stop off. Friendly staff and plenty of seating outside. It is popular so parking could be an issue.

Popped in for alight lunch, large selection of small plates. Great place to eat and drink. Excellent service. Would recommend.

Looking forward to meeting friends over dinner. First issue was when I asked for a nonalcoholic drink due to driving and asked if I wanted a soft drink. Poor, lack of choice. Had fish and chips that looked good and had a nice crispy batter and the fish inside was nicely cooked. Problem was this had clearly come out of a freezer pre battered and their ping-chef was unable to cook a frozen battered fish properly. Inside of the batter was raw, tasted awful. I meet friends and we take turns to pay, had I been paying I’d have sent the lot back. No comment was made by staff that I’d just peeled ALL the batter back and left it…now a traditional fish and chips it’s normal you eat the lot. A very badly cooked fish and chips raw batter is left so they must be used to this. Won’t be eating here again. If they want to charge restaurant prices, they need to provide the quality food to match. Not part cooked pre-packaged food from a catering suppliers. Very disappointing, spoiled the evening somewhat.

Went to the Rock to catch up with friends for dinner, the burger was good but the bread and butter pudding let it down. The cream had split. Service was good even tho it was very busy.

Always a nice stop off, can get a bit busy in the evenings. But get in early and grab a spot by the fire in winter!

My favourite place to visit for a real warm cosy pub meal! The venue is cosy and charming & the staff are super friendly. The home made meals are delicious and portion sizes are good! The cottage pie is delicious - love the rock for its atmosphere and food.

Thoroughly enjoyed a meal here before Xmas. Definitely have to book to get in. Had twice just dropped by to see if there was room but were very politely let down. This pub has the best ploughman’s around - I was stuffed! Would def have again

A large group of us met for a pre-Christmas lunch and drink. The staff were helpful and friendly. The chefs were brilliant at getting our meals out quickly and altogether

Stopped here for an hour on an ale run, locals were friendly as were the bar staff, had a few different bars to choose from and all were neat, clean and tidy, never tried the food so can not comment on that but is a very nice establishment and well run.

Service was very good. The food was tasty but the portion size was disappointingly small. The ice cream served with the brownie looked like it was scooped out with a teaspoon!

Delightful discovery! Usual story of hungry travellers going past and just decided to drop in for a supper, on a rainy, wintry Sunday evening. We were not disappointed, in addition to some great looking Sunday roast plated meals, there were some very strong bar meals with an excellent range of starters for myself and my vegetarian wife. She had scampi and chips and I went for the curry of the day as it was a red Thai pork curry with rice and chutney. Quite superb and no room for desserts. Very happy and thoughtful staff who certainly added to our enjoyment. Our only disappointment was that we do not live nearer!

The service was excellent from start to finish . We enjoyed our starters, however on the mains the steak was a little tough and the batter on the fish and chips was very dark and too thick. No one checked during our meal if was all ok. Desserts were very nice. Drinks were served nicely and the waiting staff were aware and asked us if we wanted refills at appropriate times.

Bloody smashing Sunday roast still serving till 8pm. I had the nut roast, sis had chicken. Both piping hot, served incredibly quickly, veg all freshly done, top notch all round. Back again 3 weeks later for Saturday dinner. Again we hadn't booked & managed to fit us in. Great fish & chips & veg cassoulet, great beers, great service. Will no doubt be back. Back again 2 weeks later for Saturday dinner for 4 of us. Burgers, steak & ale pie & risotto from the specials all super. As always, staff couldn't be more friendly & accommodating. Excellent service.

Book early it's popular. Cosy place with lots of room. Book early for a meal. We go there for the steak pie. Kids meals are small. I had roast beef which was disappointing as I didn't have enough gravy. Apple crumble whoah yummy

Really great first time at the Rock Inn today. We booked in last minute after our walk around the reservoir and the staff were accommodating and friendly. I’m vegetarian so had the nut roast, and I couldn’t believe how flavourful and filling it was (I’ve had plenty of bad, dry ones)… My partner said the topside of beef was really good too! We were impressed by the amount of vegetables we were given and the gravy is worth a special mention too as it was super rich! We asked for for more. The roast potatoes were incredible too, they’re crispy but melt in mouth. Would defo come back ☺️

Recently went with for a roast dinner with the family. I ordered the 3 meat option which at £21 had high hopes for! Plenty of meat when it arrived but served with plain boiled veg and thin gravy was left a little disappointed. We all enjoyed our desserts tho which were of good size..

Randomly stumbled on this pub on a bike ride. The staff served us food even tho kitchen had just closed. It was the sharp end on prices but food was quick and clean beer was decent too,recommended

Visited again after a lovely meal here a few years ago. We were npt disappointed, a table was found for us on a busy day and if anything the food was better than before. Staff were attentive and cheerful, a lovely experience

Our food was very good. I had a prawn baguette with a side salad. One of the best prawn baguettes I have had in a long time. The side salad was fresh and had a lovely dressing on it. We had a table in the window which was great. The staff were very attentive and we couldn't fault the service. The food came out very quickly even though there were several tables occupied. The ladies toilets were very clean.

Prawn cocktail starter always an old favourite but in this case i could count the defrosted prawns on 2 hands, and as with once frozen prawns they had started to 'mush' in the very center of an opulent bed of leaves to make the serving look much larger than it really was. Then onto the main which was named something grand and romantic but was in fact simply hunters chicken. The chicken breast showed no signs of cooking other than boiled to maintain its size, wrapped in a rasher of bacon and i believe baked with a BBQ sauce over it. Came with some fries (i counted 15) which were also once frozen from a packet. For dessert , as with starter and main course we both went for the same and chose 2 scoops of ice cream, each one maybe dessert spoon size. I would have put the total product cost at around 8-10 pounds sterling so with a total bill in excess of 65.00 i can only come to the conclusion that 'profit' is everything and quality or even quantity for that matter is unimportant.

Lovely food and friendly staff.

The food was barely warm and then my partner had to wait 10 minutes for the veg to arrive , by then the roast was cold. When the waitress took the plates and asked if all was OK? My partner told her it was awful and cold, the waitress started laughing? She then said oh , you are serious. This was our 4th visit in the past few months and tbh probably our last 😐

Very disappointing. Looks good online but good very overpriced and average. Friendly staff in nice location but that’s it. As locals trying new places we wouldn’t return

On the plus side, this pub has an area inside where dogs are allowed. The food however was a disappointment, it was a Sunday roast from 30 years ago, a reasonable sized portion with good beef, not overcooked, but roasts potatoes were soft, vegetables over cooked, a thick gravy but lacked a good flavour, possibly just made from some granules or the like. Worst were the Yorkshire puddings, not very big and not well risen, lacking in any real flavour. I would suggest it's somewhere that has just kept doing the same thing for many years, other than having increased the peice, whereas others have moved on, and expectations increased. Better available in the area for the same cost.

A bit clinical, lacked atmosphere. To top it all, no loo roll in toilet...no excuse they were not busy.

Went to The Rock with my family for a birthday lunch. There were seven in the party, all the meals were first rate. The waiting staff were professional and friendly. Positive experience all round.

Sharing platter is a platter for one. Two pieces of ham and a dollop of Co op hummus.

We are walkers/hikers and visit a pub every week in South Devon and therefore have a long list of places to compare with. Had a plough mans lunch in The Rock at Yelverton. I am almost 70 years of age and it is the first time EVER in my life that a pub has served me with " 1/2" a pickled onion, yes a pickled onion cut in half as representative of their ploughman's. Will we go there again, what do you think?

Lovely place, very pleasant sitting on the terrace in the sunshine. A highly recommended stop in for those cycling deeper into the Moor!

Food is well overpriced for how poor it was - My best advice if you want food in the area is to head a mile down the road to the Walkhampton Inn, much better!

We had a family reunion lunch here yesterday, a party of 12. The Barmaid/waitress who served us initially and took our order was just short of RUDE! She was totally uninterested, seemed totally fed up and didn't have a clue regarding hospitality and service. Several of our party noticed her behaviour but we didn't want to challenge her. The other staff were on point, friendly, smiling and obliging. Extremely off putting experience. I certainly wouldn't go there again.

Excellent service and lovely atmosphere. A great range of ales and good food. The Rock Inn helped the community during lockdown and now it's back to nearly normal.

Price a bit over the top but I'm a tight northener.

Hit and miss. Decent beer and service but the food is a gamble - great pie and a really good burger (tasted far better than it looked) but don't order the steak - a rubbish piece of overcooked meat with bland sauce.

23 people for a 30th birthday meal. Very organised. Food was lovely and staff really friendly. Everyone had a great time 😀

Wonderfully welcoming and dog friendly. My Greyhound lay down on the carpet by our table and went to sleep. Had very generous prawn rolls with side salad. Absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. Plenty of tables to sit outside too.

What a lovely pub, I was in a group of 9 and our food all came out the same time, all quality meals which was enjoyed by all, service and cleaness of the pub was A1, going to be taking my fine lady their soon

Went on the 1st June at 6pm. There is an area inside where you can take well behaved dogs. We had our wee dog and was able to sit inside with her. Waiting staff really nice. No issues at all. Food was lovely
