Dont buy your sundaes here as you never get what you pay for! We always get banoffee sundae and always get banana with vanilla icecream when its meant to be vanilla an toffee,no fudge squares or wafer tubes and not offered a alternative product.banoffee i dont think so!

My husband and I came across Marc Tony’s in August 2023 when visiting Newcastle for the day as part of a summer holiday in Northumberland. We’re back in Northumberland in summer 2024 and visited Newcastle again and remembered the nice cafe we went to last year and decided to return with our 2 year old daughter as we knew she’d love the ice cream sundaes on offer. Marc Tony’s didn’t disappoint! We really enjoyed the service, the chillis, Nutella/ferrrero rocher sundae, mini chocolate sundae and Canadian waffles. We’re from Liverpool and really enjoy meeting people from the North East, always down to earth and friendly - Geordies are the best.

Visiting the city decided to pop here for breakfast after first visiting 8 yrs previously. Its still as nice. The place is clean the staff on duty were really nice and friendly and the food was just as good We had a cooked breakfast which was nicely presented and Coffee and tea were good too. I spied the ice cream and cakes on our way out and thought next time I'm in newcastle I must sample one

I visited this place for the first time with my boyfriend a couple of days ago and was amazed by the selection and cheap prices. I had a sundae and was pleasantly surprised by the portion. After raving about it to my mum, we decided to come here today but ended up having a very disappointing experience. The food I ordered today was almost inedible; cold and dry jacket potato with a mound of grated cheese on top - you wouldn't find this being served in a primary school! Customer service is extremely poor amongst some of the staff members; when being served our food and also observing how other customers were being served their food - a kitchen staff member would shout miserably across the cafe who ordered what, and the attitude of one of the other staff members was terrible. My perspective of Mark Toney's has changed drastically, from thinking I had found a gem to wishing I had never gone the second time. If you do go, go for the desserts and nothing else.

I went here today with my girlfriend for my first visit in about 10 years and I was pleasantly surprised at the selection and the prices. As far as I was concerned previously, they only did ice creams and breakfasts, but they actually do all sorts including burgers, fish and chips, and curry! There's truly something for everyone! I think the prices came as even more of a surprise, everything on the menu seemed incredibly cheap. If today's purchases are anything to go by however, this low cost is not reflected in the quality as the portion sizes and quality were excellent, so the value for money is definitely there. They do a 10% student discount as well so we got our items even cheaper. Today I got myself a hot beef, onion and gravy bap, and while I found the beef a little tough, it was still very nice and well priced! We will definitely be coming back on a regular basis! The décor, atmosphere and staff were also high points of our visit. Next time you are thinking of going to a Wetherspoons or a fast food place for a quick bite to eat, consider Mark Toney's instead!

Wow was this a bad time to walk in ( Monday 23rd Dec ) staff were obviously having a barny with each other. It felt very uncomfortable seeing this. We tried our best to ignore this, but the woman on the counter got very impatient with us , all because we couldn’t make our minds up quick enough for her. The cafe was empty and no one behind us. When the food came it was slammed down on the table. The coffee was nice but the bacon sandwiches were greasy. Been here many a time any always enjoyed it, but as I say it was just a bad time.

Went here with my mum and my son after a trip to the Life Centre. The ice cream was truly delicious - can recommend the awesomely-named Tiger Tails (chocolate with chocolate sauce and dark chocolate pieces) and the Strawberry and Lime sorbet and my son loved his Bubble Gum and Candy Cloud. Grandma was equally impressed with her affogato and said the coffee was really good. The lady who served us was super friendly as well and the music/atmosphere made it a really pleasant place to be - a nostalgic nod to times past. A fabulous place - would recommend and return!

I visited this Mark Toney in the Grainger Market for the first time a few weeks ago. I originally ordered a cheese and onion toastie, however the waitress then informed me that they had ran out of cheese...I did enjoy some homemade vegetable soup instead, however I found this Mark Toney just too small and the floor was dirty. The waitress stated that this cafe was due to close, I'm hoping the bigger Mark Toney near the Haymarket is of a higher hygienic standard.

Me and my partner visited here in October, as we wanted to try the ice cream, the ice cream was really good, I had a sundae and my partner had a coffee, we mentioned that we wanted to try the food, so we went back with another couple, and this time I went to order with a member of the other couple. It was a Saturday so I appreciate it was busy, but the waitress behind the counter was extremely rude, everything we ordered was a massive hassle to her, and at one point she even rolled her eyes at me. An elderly gentleman was next to us waiting for a tea and a separate waitress rudely came over and told him that she'd took it to a table and wasn't sure why he was waiting there. When I was waiting to pay I had to repeat everything I had ordered to the waitress again, and again met by eye rolling and everything being a big deal. When we went back for sauces again it was a massive problem and inconvenience, even though by that point there was no one at the till waiting to be served. When I mentioned to my partner, she told me when we first visited and she went to order, the service was exactly the same. Needless to say, we won't be visiting again. I rated a 2, because the ice cream is nice, so if you are an ice cream fan and can put up with ignorant staff serving you I'd give it a try!

Fortunately we were staying for a couple of days so decided we would be back. When we did it was only for pudding! My son decided on a chocolate sundae and I had waffle with strawberries and Ice Cream. Well my son was very impressed with his sundae and said it was delicious, nothing was left! My goodness, my waffle dessert was huge It was absolutely delicious and even my son begged a try! lol I just wish we had one here in Sheffield. Having checked out the Internet we headed for the only option - Mark Toney. It was really old school, having been around since 1962, but it was also really excellent. Okay the decor was a bit tired, but the hospitality and menu were really great. My wife and I both had waffles with ice-cream, whipped cream and sauces (toffee, Nutella etc.). Fantastic portions, heavenly taste and great value for money, along with an old school milky coffee. Why do people indulge in the obvious (Costa and the likes) when places like this go overlooked?Locals (and tourists of course) please give it a try. There's more to experience than the predictable Costa!

Food is fantastic here. Great value and good tasting food. Only negative is if you do not know what you want. They try to get you out of the queue as quick as possible so I would suggest that if you don't know what you are wanting that you feel sit down at the table and check out the menu. Have a fantastic fantastic fantastic food also ice creams are to die for.

We went to three cafe's before we went to Mark Tony's. Didn't like the look of anything, when we went in MT's the menu was very colourful and new what we wanted and that was the afternoon tea ,it sounded good, we got to choose our sandwiches and we got lovely apple pie with cream and a beautiful chocolate mousse cake. It was really nice and I would go again and I can highly recommend going.well with it.

Hadn't been here for about 35 years as we left the area but very little had changed. Good value and coffee is still served in glasses. It's as if time had stood still. Great ice cream too.

Nice enough place, as described by many already.I went in for coffee in the morning and returned for a sandwich a few hours later. On both occasions the staff were functional but not engaging. And when leaving the premises and walking past the serving counter, I got no acknowledgment. No "bye" or "thanks". I would suggest that the quality of Customer Service is one of the most important aspects that consumers look for in any organisation and the basics of a smile and "thank you" shouldn't be difficult for anyone to achieve.

This place has been open for a number of years and I remember visiting as a child. It has been extended and renovated quite considerably and is a lovely retro style ice cream parlour which also serves savoury food, coffee and other deserts. The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. Definitely worth a visit.

Stopped in for a coffee and a cake whist visiting Newcastle University. It was okay, the decor is 1960's Italian/American Ice Cream Parlour. It seemed pretty popular with locals and was fine for what we wanted and cheaper than Costa Coffee or Starbucks. A few people were eating cooked food also which seemed reasonable from what I could see.

Both Arabica coffee, and fruit pie complimented each other. Fruits help to bring out the slight sharpness of coffeeMust customer, I think, will adore the background music, which is easy to the ears - a nostalgia of Simon and Garfunkel, ABBA, Tony Bennett, Petula Clarke. The Italian business has been in Newcastle for 54 years, a testament to its popularity with locals.

I thought that I'd give this café a try after Boxing day sale shopping, it was very busy with only two girls serving but ~I got exactly what I ordered two ice creams and two coffees. We sat downstairs as upstairs was packed but be very careful when carrying your tray down the stairs, The ice creams are very good and very reasonably priced. The toilets could do with a lick of paint and updating but are very clean. All in all delightful for Newcastle.

have never left a place feeling so full and spending so little - my husband has roast pork lunch the portion size was huge !!! There was generous helpings of thickly cut pork mashed potato roast potatoes carrots peas cabbage , Yorkshire pudding gravy and a dish of apple sauce which was freshly made and chunky. I had broccoli quiche salad and chips which was beautifully presented and very very tasty - quiche was definitely homemade - couldn't fault anything - as for the price well £6.50 for roast dinner and £5.99 for my quiche and sides - we had a pot of tea for 2 didn't take notice of price of that was too busy being excited at a teapot that didn't spill everywhere when you poured it - not just quality food - quality tableware etc - massive thumbs up and definitely returning here frequently - work our way through a varied menu

A nice local cafe rather than Wetherspoon. There is not much competition in Newcastle. Few traditional cafes mostly national chains. The breakfast here included black pudding and was very tasty for £5.45 including tea and toast. The small Mark Toney in Grainger market is even cheaper at £4.95. Both are good but there is more space and comfort in the one in Grainger Street.

The cafe is bit dated and so is the sundaes, the ice cream its self is very tasty but when u get a sundae its hardly any ice cream, its like fruit salad with a hint of ice cream! if u just want few scoops of ice cream on its own. its worth it.

My Wife and I were born in the North East and this cafe was a favourite from a very young age. Whenever we return to Newcastle we always make the time to call in for a coffee and cheese savoury roll. Well worth a visit to try some very long standing fancies, including the delicious ice cream.

Came here on a hot day, and had ice cream sundaes which were really lovely. The food across the 4 of us was excellent. The place looks a bit worn in places but you can live with that for the food. Can only give three stars as they forgot a drink and when reminded took another ten minutes to get it out to us. But try this place as its good.

Visited during our 4-hours visit of Newcastle. This was just 5 min from central station, so we've decided to have a breakfast after arrival. First of all thank you for wonderful service! Staff was so friendly and cheerful, we were feeling like at home. Breakfast was pretty good with huge portions, as for me, too much for one person, but it was so tasty that I've eaten everything on the plate. A wide range of desserts, wanted to taste them all, but it took some time to order ice cream after breakfast.

I simply must thank you for the superior service we received while dining at Mark Toney on Wednesday evening.Your staff went above and beyond to make sure our experience was the best it could be. As we only joined you for dessert it could have proved difficult to manage from your side but it was simply faultless.Your staff, took it all in their stride and never treated our party with anything less than the utmost professionalism. It is service like this that will keep us coming back to your restaurant again and again.
