We chanced upon Mario's on Valentine's. We didn't have a reservation but still got a table- it was nicely busy. The food was excellent with great veggie options. Had a lovely chat to Mario who was really friendly and welcoming. And it was reasonably priced. Can't wait to go back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our black pudding and potato skin starters and capriciossa pizzas , washed down with a great value bottle of Italian red . Lovely staff and a traditional Italian restaurant feel, so refreshing compared to the usual chains. Our first visit and we hope to return .

I can recommend this restaurant without hesitation.With rustic and clean decor it is a must for pizza and pasta lovers.There is also a veriety of meat and chicken dishes. Well stocked wines and beers. There are no other restaurants in Newcastle that have this very intermit and warm atmosphere. Food is delicious and service excellent. What a fabulous little restaurant. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great choice of food. There were 12 of us and everyone really enjoyed their meal. The manager made a lovely fuss of the bride to be. Definitely worth a visit 😊😊🍷🍷

I booked a table here expecting great food after reading the reviews. I felt rushed from the start as the waiter asked for my order after a couple of minutes. I ordered from the Christmas menu chicken roast tomato, that's what I got no veg or anything else. I wouldn't return for the money I paid I felt ripped off. Go to KFC at least you know what to expect

This is a regular haunt for our band, so a natural choice for our Christmas meal. The choice on the "festive" menu was limited, but everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. My own choice was black pudding salad, pollo casa and panna cotta to finish - all excellent, and accompanied by their delicious (and inexpensive) house wine.

As always, excellent food in a friendly, relaxing and unpretentious atmosphere. Reasonable, unpretentious prices too, and great hospitality. Of all the Italian restaurants in town, Mario's is my favourite 🥰

Visited here as a result of the great reviews. They were right. The food was delicious, definitely home made and can highly recommend especially with it being a family business too. Staff were friendly and service was great.

Well! What a hidden gem this place is. Plenty of choice on the menu - lunch time special great value and good choices. Certainly service with a smile, staff are lovely and attentive ! Cosy restaurant with lovely atmosphere. Food arrived promptly. It was presented well and delicious. I am really looking forward to visiting again next time I am in town.

Marios is a small local Italian Restaurant that has been here for years. We used to come here years ago but have not been for a long time. 3 of us popped in at 6:30 on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very busy with young families. Managed to get the 2nd last available table. Happy hour prices were excellent at £10.95 for 2 courses. The young waiter was very helpful and had a great sense of humour. Food arrived very quick and while it wasn't the biggest of portions it was tasty and well presented. The potato skins were polished off in seconds, the black pudding starters took a little while longer as the black pudding was a little over crispy. We all had pasta dishes for mains and they were all piping hot and delicious. House wine was la smidge under £13 a bottle and we could of quite happily had 2. Good local restaurant, very reasonably priced with great wait staff and good basic food.

A great small friendly restaurant with an excellent selection of food and wine at a very reasonable price with fantastic customer service. The same staff have been there since I started going 5 - 6 years ago.

Fantastic meal. 2 courses for less than 12 quid. Pasta was beautiful and a great selection on the menu. The waiter was a great fella and really made the visit. If you want Italian go here. We will definitely be back.

Found this place by chance when walking through the Bigg Market.

What an amazing little restraunt hidden away in a side street. Forget your Italian chain and try here. Not a massive menu but enough choice and excellent. Started with goats cheese roasted vegetable crostini and unlike chains there was lots of goats cheese. Absolutely lovely. My main way the fillet steak with small potatoes and roast veg which was perfection. The steak was plentiful and cut through like butter. The best I have had for a long long time. Sauce was gorgeous and not drowning the steak. Well recommended. Staff are very pleasant and will chat without being intrusive. I can definitely recommend this restaurant without a shadow of a doubt. Would definitely return when back I. Newcastle. Give it a try. You wont be disappointed.

Friends and I visited Marios for lunch and they have a set menu , the food was lovely, cooked to order, fresh and served by very friendly staff.Good price and somewhere we will visit agin.

Off the beaten path this family run restaurant offers delicious Italian good. Very reasonable with large portions. Good house Italian red wine

The menu was extensive and included a main menu plus a set price one for 2 or 3 courses. A great selection of starters, pizza, pasta, meat and fish dishes. Great staff as well.

Don't be put off by the street / approach to this restaurant, once inside it is lovely and the meal we had was delicious and great value. Staff were really friendly and there was a good atmosphere despite it being a quiet Monday when we visited. It caters well to gluten free diners too, with several risottos and main dishes that don't focus on pasta to chose from.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal last night at Mario’s, visiting Newcastle with my daughter. Food and service were great and bargain 3 course evening meal. Will definitely return next time in Newcastle 😊

Ha estado en Newcastle probablemente desde que Joe Harvey manejó el Toon, al menos eso parece. Comida bastante estándar pero bien cocinada, servida a precios razonables. Lubina particularmente buena. Tenga cuidado con Maitre’D, quien se mata con sequedad y con mucho gusto, hablará sobre los últimos chismes de fútbol de la calle James Park.

On my own for business in Newcastle midweek and went to this lovely little place for dinner. What a find.

We discovered Mario Restaurant down a dingy side street, and from the outside it doesn't look anything special but experience (and other reviews) has shown that appearance can be deceptive.

We went to Mario with a group of friends for an early meal on a Saturday night, there were 9 of us. First time I had been to this small restaurant in a lively part of Newcastle. I would happily go again.

Had a bad experience at another restaurant came here couldn’t be more pleased. The service was excellent ... food great and staff even better made the whole experience a much better and enjoyable evening. Couldn’t be more helpful ...

This is a great city centre Italian restaurant. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The surroundings are very nice and the place is very clean. The food was exceptional. All the prices are very reasonable indeed.

We were recommended Mario's and it met expectations and more. The food was so delicious and at a reasonable price. The staff were very friendly, especially Mario and I would definitely go back.

Habiendo visitado y revisado este restaurante hace más de 4 años, me interesaba ver si era tan bueno. ¡Mejor que nunca! El restaurante ha pasado de un ambiente de cafetería a un super restaurante. La comida está hecha desde cero y nos impresionó tanto que volvimos en la tercera noche de una estancia de 3 noches. Sin duda la mejor comida italiana que hemos comido. Bill era una estrella, y fue un placer charlar con él. Un buen embajador para Marios! No comer en cualquier otro italiano en Newcastle!

It was made birthday. It was a Wednesday. Why was it not full? Fabulous food. Fabulous service. Short but great wine list. Please don’t come and save it for us. I don’t want it to be as busy as it should be.

We were that impresded, this was our 2nd ever visit, a month after our first.

Had chicken livers and veggie risotto it was very nice and served very quickly. Definitely be back as it is well placed for an early evening eat for me.

Had lunch here today and what a refreshing change to the normal Italian lunch menu. I had blackpudding salad as a starter and it was brilliant. Had red onion, spinach, asparagus and blue cheese pasta and it was the best pasta I have had in ages. We will definitely be going back here.

Four of us went for dinner one night during a city break in Newcastle. Can't praise it enough; clean and comfortable, with excellent food and pleasant staff. Nice tablecloths and napkins - plus we could hear ourselves speak, with no loud background music. Will certainly return!

Since the Magic weekend has been held in Newcastle we always make a point of visiting for delicious Italian food, the charming staff now remember us. Last night I had fish sou followed by duck whilst my other half enjoyed Caprese salad and meatballs , "wobbly coffees " a must too !

Always a friendly greeting, this family run independent restaurant is in the heart of the city and a perfect place for a business lunch or a bite to eat with a partner.

Pleasant food, albeit slightly poor value outside of their lunchtime menu. Main courses are overpriced by a pound or two and coffee is cheap although insipid. The menu states that their pasta is made in-house - on enquiry, this is not the case.

I have been coming to Mario's for longer than I like to recall, except the thought of entering this quiet, orderly and welcoming restaurant is always in anticipation of a fine dining experience that won't bankrupt me.

everyone was very happy with the choices available and the quality outcomes after our two course meal - fresh foods - cooked very well - and good knowledge of gluten-free meals too - made for an excellent tasty meal at a super price. We were also very impressed with the GOOD quality wine at very affordable prices too which meant we could treat ourselves two bottles - full marks for waiters who were helpful, jovial and friendly and very professional. A Lovely atmosphere.

13 of us booked for a late lunch on Sat.Food was excellent,drink reasonable for a city centre restaurant and staff very friendly..A small gripe is my partner is a coeliac so had gluten free carbonara which she said was very tasty but it was a very small portion.Will definitely go back.

I have been visiting Marios regularly on a tuesday evening with a party of around ten people. I can speak for our whole party in saying the food is always well cooked and tasty. Well, we have booked for our christmas meal - says it all!

13 of us visited on Saturday night for a family party. Service was swift. Food was delicious. Final bill, with drinks, was extremely reasonable. Mariò even brought my son a free dessert with candles when he heard it was his birthday. Will definitely return.

Stumbled upon this restaurant by chance. Don't be put off by the fact it's down a dodgy looking side street! Obviously has regulars and returning customers, which is always good sign. Delicious meal had by all of us. Really friendly staff and very reasonably priced. Will definitely be our first choice restaurant when in Newcastle upon Tyne

Having been going to Mario's restaurant for years on Pudding Chare, I have never been disappointed. The food is top quality for an extremely reasonable price! Their restaurant has just been refurbished and makes great use of the space. All of the staff are very friendly and the service is always very prompt.

Mario's has recently returned to their original restaurant over the road In pudding chare.Having travelled the world this restaurant gives you authentic Italian food Wow - best sea bass I've ever had and if you want to push the boat out have the calamari starter.Seriously this is the best Italian restaurant in Newcastle and I am one picky customer !!

This is the second time we've visited Mario's first time when it was on the opposite side meal was nice apart from my partners main which he said tasted like it had been microwaved too much but other than that staff were lovely & rest of the food was nice

Called for lunch time special, not only were the usual any pizza or pasta on the menu but also the choice of some specials such a pollenta,. Atmosphere in restraunt is warm and friendly, there is a notice saying it is moving back across to the old premises in the next month or so. Staff were attentive without being intrusive, food was good. Price very reasonable at 5.99 for 2 courses

We arrived late during the lunch sitting but the restaurant stayed open for us and we are so glad they did. Our family if 4 were superbly fed, excellent value and a truly lovely place. We'll be back when we're in Newcastle again. Within easy reach of the station for those traveling in that way.

What a lovely, small and friendly Italian restaurant in the centre of Newcastle. Situated just off the Bigg Market Marios is a family run restaurant. The food is lovely and fresh and exactly what you order.. The staff including the father and son (son is Mario) run a lovely friendly place. The prices are right with a nightly special and the house wine is fab!Last night at around 7pm there was not a spare table in the house! Well worth a visit

Four of us dropped in for dinner one evening and the place had a friendly Buzz going on. You can order off the menu or choose the specials, all our meals, lamb, chicken and steaks were good, well cooked and tasty and very reasonable too. Would recommend.

Me and a friend dined here after having a busy day of work and shopping.Was a very nice experience, food was amazing, staff were very pleasant and attentive, surroundings could do with a bit of a revamp but you can let that slide when the meals were as tasty and filling as we were served.I would advise however that you keep the kitchen door closed, I understand it gets warm in there and it maybe needs some ventilation but it's not ideal to able to see straight through. Top marks for it looking clean and tidy though.Would definitely recommend and go again.

Visited Mario's on Friday night to start off my Grand Daughter's Hen weekend. Having looked on Trip Advisor for restaurants near House of Smith (we were visiting from Aberdeen) one review in particular made me think this was the place for us. My other grand daughter made the booking and they were really helpful.We had a lovely meal at a very reasonable price but it was the staff who made the experience, making us feel so at home. I know it's family run and maybe that is what creates the atmosphere but they certainly made our wee bride feel special even taking time to enquire about the forthcoming wedding.Thank you Mario's - you made it a great start to a wonderful weekend in Newcastle

Managed to get a table even though it was busy.Food was delicious, service good and house wine very nice.We both had pasta which was cooked to perfection and the sauce was plentiful with lots of content. Reasonably priced. Service pleasant and efficient.Great little independent restaurant - nicer food than some of the more expensive well known chains near the monument.Definitely recommend.

This busy family run restaurant is an always reliable choice for good Italian food as opposed to the indifferent fare provided by the chains that otherwise proliferate over British city centres. The menu offers a sufficiently broad choice to appeal to most palates and is accompanied by a decent wine selection at affordable prices. Portions are generous and the ingredients fresh.The premises are clean and bright and your meal is accompanied by an entertaining selection of music.The staff are always helpful and obliging whilst the owner , Joe, takes a keen interest in the food he provides being both friendly and knowledgeable if you ask for advice or recommendations.Highly recommended !

I visited here with friends at 5.15 on 16/2/17.i had been here previously at the same time before and it was so busy so booked in advance . This is a lovely little restaurant not one of those places where you can't here yourself talk ! Staff are delightful and the owner who is normally there even remembered my friend from many years ago as she had been a regular visitor. We decided on the special two courses for £9.95. There was a good choice .i chose bruschetta for a starter and my friends both chose the black pudding. Both absolutely delicious . There were loads of cherry tomatoes with bruschetta.loved it. I had the wild mushroom pizza and my friends had marinara pasta and chicken wth vegetables. The marinara pasta looked amazing just full of seafood plus shells. Excellent value for £9.95. I shared a bottle of red wine with one friend which cost £12.00. Much cheaper doing it that way than buy per glass. Lovely and clean and deffinetly on my list to visit again . A lovely romantic place for couples too.

Returned to Mario's recently. Two course evening meal for under a tenner. House wine £12.50 which was a Chardonnay Trebianno. Free home made soft bread is served with oil and balsamic vinegar. For our starters we choose black pudding salad with crispy bacon and pate. Mains, I had chicken in an interesting sauce with chips. You can choose from chips, veg or salad. My partner tried the pasta offering which consisted of small pasta balls with squid and mussels. Lots of mussels in their shell in the meal and he enjoyed this dish. Very nice. Worth a visit if you have never been. This is a well established family restaurant which has been in Newcastle for many years. The staff all know us now but are very friendly and nothing is a bother to them. The specials menu constantly change so you don't get bored of the same food like a lot of chain restaurants.

This was a lovely experience... I booked a table for 2 @ 6.30pm about a week before Valentine's Day. My girlfriend and I attended about 6.12 and were seated straight away. The waiters were attentive but not too much, they brought beautiful food with just he right amount of time between courses. Only missing touches were no candle to be lit at the tables but hey... we got 2 lovely mains, sticky toffee puddings, drinks and coffee for £25 and worth every penny.

6 of us visited for supper - it was a match day so the town was buzzing and Mario's was packed. The food is super value for money with an excelllent specials menu. The staff are lovely and friendly and there is plenty of choice both food and wine. It's a safe choice for lunch or dinner and never fails to please

Newcastle in December is heaving with people but this little place gave us sanctuary. Not a huge menu but good food with great big portions. Lovely atmosphere and cheesy music - which suited the Italian style. Very happy, very friendly staff. Starters were pricey but mains were well priced. I'll be going back.

Went last night on our way to the arena, last time we went think it was called mama Mia's. Started off with tomato garlic bread really nice taste. Kids both had rigatoni Napoli and never left any or had any complaints. I had rigatoni with seafood really nice only minor issue was a lot of the mussels in the shell had nothing in but apart from that was delicious. Staff really pleasant, will definitely return

My husband and i came here for the first time, we always go for a cheap meal while we're out and about shopping in the city centre. Its quite small inside,the staff were friendly and the food was lovely, can highly recommend it. Definitely worth a visit and we'll be back in the future.

Our second visit to tis restaurant and I was very impressed. There was fresh bread olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the table, the waiter asked if we were ready to order order, took our orders and with only a short wait our food was on the table. I cant fault the quality, really enjoyed my pizza. My only reservation - all our party actually prefer to have a half pizza and a salad. I dont understand why tis should be a problem - how hard is it to cut a pizza base in two?

Like a bad Meal from a retro basic 1979 late night scran venue!!!!! Awful, and embaresingly dated and overpriced,i was waiting for chicken in the basket and scampi and prawn cocktail in a glass coming, it was so horrid,and expensive for the rubbish they put on a cheap cafeteria plate,,,, please, please,save youre money and get better quallity food at a mc donalds drive throgh!!!!! Im begging you!

Been going here for nearly 5 years from the old building to the new building it has always been fantastic! Do wish they would bring the fish salad back though.

My best friend and myself decided to go out for our weekly meal and decided on Italians. We have always like to go to the smaller run restaurants rather than the bigger chains such as celebrity chef ones! To be honest. We wish we had gone to a different restaurant.We both work and have other commitments so we don't get much time to go out, so our once a week meal out is something we look forward to.Unfortunately the restaurant we wanted to go to had actually closed down. So we checked the menu in the window and decided to give it a go! From our experience I wish we had just kept walking to one we had been to before.When we walked in there were 2 tables in. Both quite large groups. Who seemed to be enjoying themselves. All I can say is that they must have ordered different things to us.My friend ordered the potato skins starter and I order the deep fried Brie. I can't fault the starters but then again, they're not the hardest things to do (having working in restaurants before, I know).The mains we ordered were a carbonara and a pollo pizza. When she ordered the waiter asked if she wanted the hole in the middle as well (it's a polo sweet joke) tbh this was the best part of the mail!The carbonarav came and tbh ever time I go to an Italians I get a carbonara but this was the first one I had ever had that was a light orange in colour. Unfortunately no picture.My friend's pizza was not very hot, maybe look warm at best. Basically it seemed they had cooked it earlier and left it to sit (no proof of this though).In my honest opinion I would say that this may have just been a bad night for them but we won't be going back.Hope this helps

A really good value meal for 3 people that was obviously cooked using quality ingredients. Bill was less than 60 pounds for two courses and alcohol. The waiting staff were friendly and they happily arranged for something that wasn't on the menu to be supplied with no fuss or hassle. Really delicious and nice ambiance. Avoid the chains and try this independent restaurant.

Went on a Saturday night and ordered squid and fillet steak, both were superb. Great atmosphere, attentive staff who were extremely professional. Restaurant was recommended by a local (John the poet !) and I have no reservations about further endorsing his recommendation - go on, give it a try !

My wife and I visited Marios again with two friends.The staff are extremely pleasant and attentive. The restaurant has a nice 'buzz' about it which makes dining a pleasure. After our initial starters my wife and I went for the sirloin steaks, with peppercorn sauce. These steaks were really good quality meat, tender,juicy, and full of flavour. They were topped with a cluster of vine tomatoes.We had an excellent evening, as did our friends, we will return.

We've been to this little restaurant quite a few times - both where it is now and when it was across the road. The food is good, the house wine enjoyable, the prices are competitive and the waiter is friendly and competent. That's why we'll return.

The food was ok when it eventually arrived but the 90 minute wait completely spoiled the night. Typical pizza restaurant food, ok , nothing special.
