Mariner Restaurant in Ceredigion

Visited on Tuesday 4th May. Absolutely delicious fish and chips and it’s great to see chips being cooked so they are crispy not dripping in grease and soggy. The batter on the fish was nice and light. Small fish and chips cooked to order in 7 mins was well presented by pleasant staff and great value. Thoroughly recommended and will be returning for sure. First class.

Discovered this absolute gem this weekend and cannot recommend it highly enough. There was a fantastic selection of freshly made sandwiches, paninis and jacket potatoes made to order. As well, freshly made bread, cakes and pastries which all looked delicious. We opted for a tuna jacket potato which came with a huge fresh salad, a bbq chicken ciabatta and a ham baguette - all of which were so tasty and arrived in no time. The lovely lady behind the counter insisted we go and wait in the sunshine and bought our order out to us very quickly. We also ordered a bottle of wine to-go as they had a fantastic selection of wines on offer. The chap working there went to the trouble of grabbing us a couple of cups and some ice. He even substituted the bottle of wine we’d bough for a more expensive wine he’d recommended to us - for no extra charge. The wine was perfect! We enjoyed our lunch sat by the Harbourside and the fantastic food we had from Mariners topped off a perfect afternoon. If you are in New Quay this place is an absolute must to visit, not just for the fantastic and reasonable food on offer but also the lovely people who run this place and their wonderful customer service. We’ve just left New Quay... having had takeaway cod and chips from Mariners. Delicious. Best fish i’ve had in a long time. The fish literally fell apart inside the batter. The customer service from the boy serving us today was second to none. Will definitely eat from here again when visiting. Thank you xx

We started here with a take away meal as wed eaten here on manynoccasions on previous visits to New quay. We were over charged and the food wasn't good,On thinking it was a one off as wednever had bad be for we gave them a second chancein the restaurant. Really wished we hadn't. After 2 times of the girl coming back to us as the food wasn't available my wife gave up and I ate with my children, it took nearly 1/2 hour for the food to arrive (there was only 1 other couple In there so not busy), oh my goodness! The childrens cod and chips was a pile of mush in sloppy batter, the burger was burnt and black and the ham egg and chips was so fatty it shouldnt have been served up. Awful. When the plates were taken it was said about the food, sorry was the response!!!!! Nothing was done about it, the boss (I assume) stood behind the counter laughing it was just a joke, please please save yourself the time and money. We always ate here I'm sure its been taken over its awful now. Never again a visit by us. Much better around

The Mariners Cafe is in the perfect location - right by the coast of New Quay. I ordered the chicken and chips as a takeaway for dinner and it was so delicious! The chips were nice and chunky and fresh. Chicken was cooked great and tasted very good - it wasn't greasy or taste 'fishy'. Service was very good also. Really enjoyed the food, would highly recommend to anyone visiting New Quay.

Same as last year. good food and new charming Staff there thanks to Sophie nice sence of humour again we were there for a week and went in for Breakfasts 3 mornings and other things Thank you Audrey & Roy

Good sized meaty fish portion chips were well cooked and not to greasy reasonably priced would use again

Chips are ok but nothing special. The fish unfortunately arrived in a rock hard, greasy coating of batter, so thick it was runny underneath - I removed all the batter to discover a really decent quality piece of fish that was overcooked but would have been delicious with better cooking and a MUCH thinner batter. Peas were ok.

Went in for breakfast staff were friendly enough but then spent ages playing on their phones. Veggie breakfast was ok sausages were leek and potato based I think, had a cheesy taste to them. My partners bacon was really fatty. It was decent enough but wouldn’t return.

Visited with my husband and daughter lovely lunch staff actually spoke to you rather than other places we went would recommend

Cod and chips were freshly cooked to perfection and very tasty. The only problem is keeping the seagulls off them!

Stopped off here for lunch as we fancied fish and chips. Not quite up to Whitby standards but pretty tasty nevertheless! I do question why anyone serves salad with fish chips and mushy peas though!

We were in the Newquay area for a few days and for weeks before my husband had been going on about having fish and chips in Newquay as we did 25 years ago!! We didn't know what would be open in Wales as in the current situation crossing into Wales from England is really like going to a foreign land where you don't know the rules.Anyway we found our wonderful fish and chips, hot , crispy and large at the takeaway from the Mariners Cafe where there was no fuss but rules were being followed and eat them onthe beach. Lovely, perhaps we can eat inside when we return hopefully not in another 25 years.

Had a fantastic fish & chip lunch with the family, food quality was excellent, portion size was large, best fish & chips I've had in a long time. Staff were very helpful & got us a table asap to avoid covid queing. Even had the time to give a bit of local information, if you're visiting New Quay this is the place for lunch!

Popped in just as the rain started so had to queue due to COVID restrictions. Tables, chairs and condiments throughly cleaned between customers. Wonderfully friendly owner who went out of his way to make sure we were happy. Nice food, great sized portions and lovely atmosphere, would certainly visit here again.

The three of us had fish and chips and ate them on the seawall watching the dolphins in the bay. Lovely food and reasonable price. Be back soon

Myself and my partner were looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, clean and just all round proper fish and chips by the sea. They serve the most beautiful food here, so we'll presented, fast and also tasty! The place itself was kept clean and each table was cleaned before we sat down. The queue was quite long when we got there but there wasn't a long wait at all. The staff are so friendly and check you're okay and your food is okay. And a bonus to it all was that we had the nicest view!!

Had takeaway from these folks - very good but if you have worked up a decent appetite you might find the portions a little in the small side. Quick service, Covid restrictions handled well

Visited Saturday night for take away Fish and Chips. Have to say it was probably the best F&C I've ever had. Spot on size for a large portion, just right. Fish tasted great with perfect batter and the chips were out of this world. Very friendly staff only had to wait a few minutes as it was freshly cooked. Social distancing measures all very straightforward and efficient. Would certainly recommend this place 100% and will definitely go again when I next visit New Quay.

On holiday with my wife in New Quay, felt a little bit pekish and we decided on having chips to "fill the hole" so to speak the chips were freshly cooked to order and they were great. Hot and crispy, not an oily aftertaste at all. Crispy scraps included was a massive, tasty bonus (for those who know what scraps are ) We're still in New Quay as I'm writing this review, so expect another review later.

On a recent vIsit to New Quay, it's been a few years since last visiting, we fancied Fish & Chips to eat by the harbour. Both the fish and chips were cooked fresh to order and were beautIful! Lovely fresh, white fish and tasty chips. Much rather have waited as we did for the food to be cooked than end up with some crap! Highly recommended.

Me and my husband attended for sunday lunch this afternoon, the food was lovely and perfect speedy service for a seaside town, absolutely nothing wrong with the restaurant. The only issue was the staff, we were served by 3 lovely young ladies who did everything possible to accommodate our need, you could tell they enjoyed working together and enjoyed chatting not only with each other but other customers also which was refreshing to see in a busy cafe. The other staff on the other hand, while ordering ice cream for our desert i was served by one young lady while the others cleaned and served others a large man who im guessing was the chef (considering he had tattoos on his hands and probably not the best hygiene he should not be near food) interrupted the lovely lady insisting she take orders out while he did the till, he was very rude about this but well done to the girl for keeping her cool and listening to his orders. After finishing my order on the till he didnt even bother to complete my order making the girl do his job as well as her own! I am not someone to write a review usually but the way this man treated this poor girl really made me angry! As a mother of 2 daughters i would never let my children work anywhere near this disgusting man!

Food was cheap and cheerful, portion sizes were very good, and we will visit again.

Visited for the umpteenth time on a wet windy February day, so not surprised to find it half-empty (I thought I had reviewed before, maybe not). Pleased to see they have introduced some portion control so now there is a manageable sized meal on offer. From the last time we visited we remember huge portions where we were barely able to stagger away we had so much to eat (they were sending profit out of the door). Each of us had 'Small' (looked huge to us) cod, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter with pot of tea/coffee for less than £7. Freshly cooked, hot, quickly and pleasantly served, so what is not to like?. This plaice gets some very mixed reviews so probably needs to be more consistent (or catch less picky customers).

We go to Wales every January and enjoy the scenery. We always like newquay and look forward to our fish and chips. The stuff they serve at the mariners was disgusting, the place needs a good clean, cod not to bad, batter thick and soggy, chips were not fresh cut but frozen. Avoid at all costs

Visited today and ordered food. The staff look miserable and dont smile food was cold and nobody came over to check if everything was ok. This place is as bad as the penwig or should I say the food would probably have been at least luke warm up there ! Wont be returning.

What a total disappointment! Just purchased a large Cod and chips, batter was under cooked and so was part of the fish.The batter was thick and soft on the inside, it was like flour mixed with water, it was not cooked. The fish was tepid in parts and uncooked in other parts of the fish. This was the worst cooked fish I have ever had!!! I do not know what has happened to the fish, but the person that fried it, needs to be re-assessed on his battering and cooking techniques. Purchased from their adjoining chip shop, which is part of the cafe.£6.75 for under cooked batter and cold/raw fish.

Having been to The Captains Rendezvous earlier in the week and found bones in the fish, was hoping for some boneless fish here. Unfortunately several bones were in the small fish, and the chips were terrible and tasteless. They must be frozen!?In future will be going to Budgies up the road and eat in for some decent fish and chips, or wait till the Lime Crab opens after Winter.

Food was good, staff very nice we had a good laugh with them,we were on holiday for a week, we went in everyday for meals.

Called in here as I was staying a few miles outside town and was heading to Lime Crab because of the reviews. That place was not open even though online they said they were! So I found mariner's by accident - what a lucky find. A queue when I arrived and this is because they cook everything to order. Nothing left sitting around going soggy. Staff were friendly and welcoming.Large cod and chips and mushy peas and it was served in a cardboard packaging - they are working on reducing plastics which is great news - and it was still good and hot when I got it back to my accommodation. I was tempted to sit on the sea wall and munch away but opted for comfort.Definitely recommend this place and as for prices they are not bad! The person complaining about chips being £2.55 needs to look around a bit and see what the average price is these days. Likewise tomato sauce (they had large sachets when I was there) and they are also average price.A large menu to choose from even though I stuck to good old fish and chips.Nothing to complain about.

Called in for lunch,restaraumt far from full,ordered 3 fish and chips and coffees.Coffees arrived but the meals took so long to arrive we'd finnished them.There were 5 or 6 staff standing around chatting and checking their phones but still took 25 minutes for it to arrive.Having seen the plates sitting under a warmer for 15 minutes with salad on them I kinda lost my appetite.Meal was average and overpriced.

I only dropped in as I was passing and very hungry. Chip scraps and slow service. Lack of condiments. Expensive, I won't be returning.

Been here twice this week, Fish Chips and Curry sauce/pushy peas, Beautiful, very good polite service in an excellent location. Well worth calling in if you don't fancy cooking.

Myself partner & grandson all had different meals & we all enjoyed them very much.Portions were very ample.

What a fantastic cafe, the food is fresh and home cooked the steak pie is stunning and so reasonable. Lovely friendly staff couldn't ask for more.

Review of attached takeaway. We had some lovely hot steaming chips but at £2.55 a portion they were daylight robbery! Apparently 30p for a sachet of ketchup.

Bought chicken nuggets chips x3 plus fish and chips x2 the fish was lovely but the rest went straight in the bin the chicken nuggets were rock hard and the chips were horrible , had to end up cooking for kids no impressed at all

The diner is very clean and has a very friendly welcome. The staff are very accommodating and the service was quick. The food is cooked to perfection and to a very high standard. We all really enjoyed our meals and left with full and happy bellies.

Visited twice. Once for bee and once for dinner. Both visits were just fantastic.

Stopped here for a portion of chips, the large portion was only around 30p more than the medium but was absolutely huge!! They were the best chips we’ve ever had, we are back next week and will be having our lunch here...

It wasn’t busy there 1 person waiting when I placed my order for takeaway fish and chips and I appreciate they were cooked fresh but come on over half an hour to wait ,4 people serving and larking about then one of days after half an hour oh have you placed an order! I would hate to think what they are like when it’s busy .the food wasn’t even that great fish was ok but chips were undercooked and had a funny taste and they gave me 1 mushy peas though I ordered 2

Lovely clean place.good menu with good choice.well priced.childrens menu available.some meal deals like fish chips bread and butter tea or coffee £6.95. Served well and well presented.had sunday dinners on sunday it was beef.lots of meat and veg.well worth it.will return.

Best fish and chips we have had in a long time. The fish was thick and plentiful and the batter light and crisp. The chips freshly cooked and decent size not scrag end bits. Not the fastest of service but well worth the wait. Staff very friendly. Sat on the side of the beach in the sunshine with fantastic view and really enjoyed

When we go to the seaside fish and chips appeal. From the reports on Trip Advisor some people were luckier than us. We waited a long time in the fish and chip shop because the restaurant side was closed. We thought this would mean a fresh batch of fish and chips. The staff were young men, disinterested in their customers but still we expected good food. I should have spoken out when I saw the very greasy mixture of overcooked very brown chips....(probably from from some earlier batch) mixed with very limp , greasy, soggy, white chips. I wish I had refused them. Instead, being hungry, we went onto the green opposite hoping to eat them over the sea view. The first bite of the batter was horribly thick and hard. I tried breaking through to just eat the fish but that was so chewy, overcooked and unpleasant. The only edible item was the O.K. but average mushy peas. We talked about their total lack of interest and care about providing good food to the public. There is no excuse at all for this. We threw the whole two meals in the bin and I thought I would never eat fish and chips again. This was their chip shop not restaurant but I would not risk the restaurant if this is their idea of good food.....it was absolutely shocking and I feel sorry for the locals. The thought of this meal makes me shudder. Tripadvisor expects one to five star box to be filled in. So I was forced to give one star, where I wanted to say a big Nil.

We had a lovely breakfast there yesterday I had the Olympic breakfast 2 eggs 2 sausages 2 bacon beans tomatoes and toast and a pot of tea it was really tasty service was quick and the staff friendly it’s all you need oh and toilets nice and clean too would recommend

Cracking cafe in New Quay. The chips were lovely! Food and service was spot on and reasonably priced. Would recommend to anyone!

The best breakfast we have had for a long time. Used by the locals. Very friendly staff and great service. Highly recommended. Loved it.

Cod and chips from the Mariners takeaway on a Thursday evening. Takeaway wasn't busy and we could walk across the road to view the sea whilst waiting for the fish to be freshly cooked. A small cod each and sharing a large chips between two was more than adequate.

Visited here whilst holidaying at a local caravan site.

Having just been out dolphin watching we decided to take a late lunch, fortunately it was a nice day so we decided to make use of this places upstairs outdoor area.

The food was delicious, fresh and tasty. However, the wait for the food wasn’t great. And then when two meals arrived it turned out one had been forgotten. Shame as this would be 4-5 stars otherwise.

Went for breakfast on the Sunday bank holiday. Very busy yes, but no one seemed to know what was going on.

Had fish and chips and battered sausage and chips with curry sauce from chip shop part of the cafe all cooked to perfection lovely crispy batter curry sauce was lush... service quick for busy bank holiday definitely will return to this chippy best yet..

We visited here whilst on holiday. What a find! This was our second visit as the first was so lovely.

It's years since I had a steak and kidney pie with gravy as tasty as I had in the Mariner's when we were on a brief holiday break in the area last week. Simple meal - just the pie, garden peas and mash - but really nice. My partner's battered fish and chips were just as good. Thoroughly enjoyable. And the staff could understand and respond to my rather limited Welsh!

Had fish and chips tea here whilst on holiday and they were delicious. Lovely fresh fish and tasty chips. Pleasant staff and clean restaurant.

We asked which was the best place for fish and chips and was directed to mariners, the fish was cooked when ordered so was lovely fresh and hot. The chips where nice and a good size portion.

Visited the fish and chip take away part of the shop and the fish and chips were really nice. Curry sauce was really nice the only disappointment was the time they took to serve you. Overall nice food but really slow service and run by students.

Good range of menu choices and the chips are always freshly cooked and plentiful. You can take-away or eat in the attached cafe but they always taste better when taken onto the harbour wall. Good place for a fried breakfast too!

Having finished our boat trip around the bay we were all really hungry. The fish and chip ‘special’ was brilliant value for money and really tasty. Just the job.

Great little cafe serving fabulous fish and chips the best we have eaten in a long time. Really fresh served with a ‘bucket full’ of chips and a decent portion of mushy peas. My husband likes curry sauce which was really tasty. Had a sneak look at someone’s steak pie which also look delicious. We had our family with us and grandchildren who also enjoyed a lovely fish and chip lunch. Their fish was also a good portion and they loved it. Definitely worth a visit.

On a wet & blustery day - the earth of the cafe was perfect - the huge fish & tips were even better.

Very nice food. My husband had fish and chips, said they were perfect. My salad was spot on, exactly as requested. The ladies serving were all really friendly and helpful. However, beware, the portions are really generous here, you need a big appetite!!

Had chips here following a boat trip. Food was lovely although at the time of our visit the queues were quite long. Felt it was quite expensive but it is a seaside town so it's to be expected. Food was nice so it's not a complaint just an observation.

Popped in for lunch as everywhere else was full. The service was nice, staff were friendly. The fish and chips were delicious freshly cooked, shame the tables were sticky and didn't seem to have been wiped.

What a great place to eat in the heart of New Quay. Meals are chip oriented ( stunning by the way). They offer meal deal - small cod, chips , peas, bread and butter plus a hot drink - £6.50 you can’t go wrong at that price and you certainly won’t leave hungry. We are regular visitors to both the cafe and takeaway.

We’d worked up an appetite on our fishing trip so headed to the Mariners for some chips and curry sauce. Lovely chips- a good proportion of crunch and delicious curry sauce. Huge portions too!

Ordered the mini cod, chips, mushy peas, beans and tea for £6.95. You should not really be hungry after that. Good value. Decent ice cream too

Went here for evening meal with our 2 children 1 & 2 years old. The staff were moody and really didn’t want to be there, the food was Also miserable and really poor. My wife and I had fish & chips and the kids had fish fingers & chips, on all accounts the chips were dripping in fat and tasted like they had either been cooked for hours and kept warm or warmed up, the fish was not fresh and very tasteless. I noticed my wife applying vinegar several times which is not like her and I was doing the same without the expected results I tasted the vinegar and I would guess it had been watered down or it was the weakest vinegar I had ever tasted... to top it all off once the waitress seen my wife & I had finished she took all the plates without noticing my daughter was still eating. We are sat here now feeling very uncomfortable having eaten this food and even more guilty for letting out children consume it..

Wonderful food and fast service, only problem is moody staff. The only 2 smiling staff was a lovely lady obviously the owner and a young lady with glasses on the till, they were very accommodating whereas the rest obviously did not want to be there.

Second visit here will be the last so disappointing chips were so full of grease they were awful fish was ok,staff were miserable and half were sat on a table talking while there were dirty tables ect not a good look at all wont be returning

Reminds me of a school canteen. Flies in window, food everywhere, dirty menu and miserable staff. Fish and chips awful, fish batter was very chewy.

A fish and chip restaurant where you don't have to have chips. Good quality quick food for a family lunch. Just off the beach. Great sandwiches and omelets. High chairs and helpful staff. Toilets for customers. Just what we needed.

Came to New Quay for music festival. Great weekend. Found this cafe, really nice food at good prices. Was just surprised whilst in queue to see the staff refuse point blank to let one of the musicians borrow a chair to play his guitar outside... most of the places had musicians playing in the street. Only a young lad with a classical guitar, looked quite dejected. You can't play classic guitar unless seated. Shame the staff didn't want to join in with the party.

This place is amazing !! So good I came back twice for their small cod special which may I add is not small & very filling & tasty. Would deffo recommend this place to any1. Yum yum, keep up the good work 😋

Called in for fish and chips. Nice modern restaurant with a good selection of food other than fish and chips. There is a take away fish and chip shop next to the restaurant if you don't want to eat in. The food was piping hot and well cooked. We had a small meal but it was enormous. They also had a selection of ice creams and served ice cream sundaes.

Had the Olympic breakfast...large portion and came with a drink which was great value for money. My husband's only complaint was the lack of chips before 11am....although that's probably his strange morning tastes!

We were a group of six plus a toddler, There was plenty of room and a good range of food at reasonable prices. The fish and chips were excellent, huge pieces of fish, fresh and tasty. Right on the sea front and well worth a visit.

Visited as a family of 4 (5 and 7yr old in tow). Fish and chips was amazing and lived up to expectations of a “good fish in a seaside resort”. Cafe is pleasant and clean with a nice feel, food was a plentyful portion and enjoyed by all. Also reasonably priced in a popular seasonal resort.

We asked locally for the best place for Fish and Chips and were directed here to eat in the cafe - fabulous fish and chips - huge portions, very reasonably priced and a great sea view. The staff were friendly and helpful, food arrived promptly and even the coffee was excellent! Why go anywhere else?

Can’t say too much other than the food is great and the prices is good. Gets busy at times but worth the wait. Will be back for sure.

We called about 3pm and had the small fish, chips and peas with bread and butter and a pot of tea. Cooked fresh while you wait so it was piping hot. Very good.

Used the takeaway to get a fish and chip tea to eat on the beach. Small fish was a good size and chips were lovely and fresh tasting. Could do with forks and napkins on the counter for people like us who want to eat outside.

Terrible food. Chips had been reheated twice or three times and after charging extortionate prices you only get half of the tray that's edible the rest are scrappy bits of chips that even the seagulls spat them out, come on guys you charge restaurant prices so let's have some tidy food to match the cost. Ps your staff look so scruffy as well.
