We ate a tasting menu - in other words what used to be called a set menu served at a set time with no choices but when each course is so splendid - fabulously flavoured, incredibly textured and wonderfully presented, who cares and how else could such perfection be realised? This is a very special place to eat, better than a dinner at a Michelin-starred hotel in Southern Italy (which had been my best meal up till I ate here), better than all the meals eaten at a hotel in Central France 60 years ago and better than everything my very skilled Morecombe landlady served up. I shall return.

I attended the Manison with my daughter and mother. We were treated to a very special afternoon tea. All freshly cooked/baked and there was plenty of it. The scones and quiche were especially good. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the place was spotless. If I had to nit pick I would say that more variety of sandwiches would have been nice. A very enjoyable afternoon, which we intend to repeat. Thank you.

The staff were extremely welcoming and very accommodating to our requests. Food was to a very high standard and reasonably priced. Large window for breakfast times and lots to choose from. What can I say about the room it was amazing particularly the window seats, large bed and the bathroom. Wow wow wow its was enormous with shower, bidet and a fab bath. The grounds were stunning as was the building itself. Reasonably priced would definatly recommend and most definitely stay again. Just fantastic.

The room at this hotel was very nice but it was obvious there were problems in the kitchen. Guests had to fill in a form to say what they wanted for the following day's breakfast - almost as though someone had to go out and buy the food from Tescos or the Co-op as they didn't have it in stock in the hotel kitchen. My husband had kippers which were obviously cooked in a plastic bag and not a nice big kipper on a plate. I had cereal and was given a bowl with a small paper bag of museli. It was such a disappointment as we have stayed at the Nanteos Hotel before and we were well looked after. Apparently now they just do bed and breakfast (and the breakfast is not very good), with mainly weddings for the rest of the year. You can have a hot meal in the evenings at weekends - as long as no wedding is taking place - but generally this lovely hotel has let itself down and we are very disappointed.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel in early April and ate at the restaurant on the Friday evening. The tasting menu was superb - every dish was cooked to perfection and Alec our waiter was brilliant from start to finish. It was such a shame that the restaurant was quieter than it should be, with SY23 taking a share of custom at the moment. Would highly recommend this place. Ps also the Welsh breakfast in the mornings was up there with the best breakfast I’ve ever had.

Was extremely disappointed to call at Nanteos this evening for a quick drink with my elderly father, only to be told that they were “open to residents only”. Well, that translates to ‘locals not welcome’. That is, unless they pay for a room there.; but nobody living nearby are going to be doing that, are they? Reason? COVID! I wonder if anyone else can see the irony here? Us, being the Ceredigion locals, are not going to be the primary Covid spreaders. However, they are happy to put up people from wherever, to come to Nanteos and the spread it around Aberystwyth before they go home. OK, so they might wanting to protect us, from them...but, as mentioned, after they leave Nanteos, they’re free to spread it where they choose, so that doesn’t cut it. So, a local National Heritage of ours has now become a Covid haven for the affluent, who want to escape to rural Mid-West Wales. And by the looks of it, that could be for a long time to come. I won’t be supporting this place when “it’s all over”.

Came here in May for a night, at the end of a week away. I thought it would be a nice treat for us. How wrong I was. Clearly an old mansion in various states of repair. Tried to go on this theme but the basics aren't there. The food was decidedly average so not a "dress" event as though, despite the cost of dinner ( Michelin prices). Breakfast was poor and clearly prepared the night before or out of a packet. Simple things were not there, for example the dining room windows were filthy and easily cleaned with a pole etc. The WiFi wasn't great, and some of the decor in public places like the stairs was poor. So it wasn't a treat in fact we left as quick as we could after breakfast, which we hardly are. And the coffee was poor.... And why do the staff wear black gloves which they don't take off...

We visited this hotel as we were looking at it as a wedding venue. From the moment we arrived, and for the entire weekend, every single member of staff we met was incredibly helpful, attentive and pleasant. We stayed in the Lord Byron suite on the first floor - the room was huge, with lovely touches such as home made short bread. I appreciate that perhaps some of the rooms do need a little tlc, but this didn’t hamper our stay whatsoever. There are lots of communal areas to sit and relax, however the hotel retains a ‘comfy’ feel.We ate in the restaurant for both nights we stayed - we chose from both the bar menu and the A La Carte menu. The food was excellent and very well priced. We were also really impressed with how reasonable a gin and tonic was from the Library Bar! It was my birthday on the second night of the stay, and despite being fairly busy, the staff made a fuss of me and went above and beyond to help me celebrate. The grounds around the hotel are wonderful - it’s not often you can stay somewhere and then go on a cross-country walk literally straight outside the front door!We loved the hotel so much that we have booked our wedding there. We can’t wait to go back, and really hope that many others get to experience some of magic that this place has.

We had booked a bar meal on spec earlier in the evening but were invited to eat in the restaurant. The room is a well proportioned room with lovely lighting. Our food arrived promptly and was delicious, there complementary bread with a choice of salted or marmite butter (I’m a marmite fan). I chose the lamb tagine and Jeff had fish and chips. We didn’t want a dessert on this occasion so we finished with coffee back it the cosy bar. A friend and I were very taken with the new range of menu choices for afternoon tea and decided to try it out. We did enjoy our food, tea and Prosecco (using the voucher in August's edition of the Ego magazine) and had a very pleasant afternoon. However, there were a few hitches. The main issue was that we were served the wrong ingredients for the menu we ordered (Estate). When we queried this, the majority of the elements - but not all - stated on the menu did arrive with an apology from the chef. The room set aside for afternoon tea is a long way from the kitchen and reception and the waiter's visits were not frequent enough so we had to go in search of a member of staff in the kitchen to order a second pot of tea. By the end of our meal, we were quite full, but we both felt that if we had only had the items that were part of our original order, that we might be feeling less satisfied. I hope our experience simply reflects teething problems at the beginning of a new venture.

Located in the Nanteos Mansion is the 17th century facility that has a moderately extensive menu. We had the fish and chips which was outstanding and included a large portion. The meal included home-baked bread and home-made butter (Marmite also). The dining experience was disrupted for a brief period because of loud construction next to the restaurant window that was going on in preparation for a wedding party in a few days. Service was very good and the waiters/waitress were informative about the meal.

Arrived with friends for a pre-booked evening meal. Reception staff disappeared as we waited. There was no welcome; we asked a passing staff member if we could go to the dining room but were told to go to the bar where we were studiously ignored. Nowhere to sit, so we asked again if we could go to the restaurant but were told to wait in reception while they prepared our table. No welcome, no drinks offered, no menu. We asked for a menu, but the prices were considerably higher than in the online version! After 40 minutes, we were told that our table was just going to be prepared; at this point we gave up and left. Customer service is non-existent, must be modelled on Fawlty Towers. Give this place a very wide berth and spend your money and time elsewhere. There are many other better restaurants in the area.

I booked afternoon tea for a family birthday celebration and, having noticed on the website there was an option to include a short tour of the mansion to learn about the history and renovations, requested that when I booked. On arrival, the usual chap who did the tours wasn't on duty but the very friendly and helpful staff on reception managed to find a very able substitute - the housekeeper, Sian. She clearly knew a great deal about Nanteos and gave us a very enjoyable and informative tour, especially having taken it on at a moment's notice! After the tour, tea was provided promptly but we'd already drunk it by the time the food arrived, which was quite a while later - but we weren't in any hurry and the surroundings were so lovely so we just asked for some more tea and everything was fine. The food was delicious - from a previous visit I knew the portions were very generous so we had 2 Gentleman's Teas and one cream/jam scone between the 4 of us, and that was plenty. All the staff we encountered were helpful, efficient and attentive. Would definitely go again.

We visited this week for lunch with family. My sister-in-law called and pre-booked a few days in advance and asked if we were able to bring a dog with us - which we were assured we could and that a table would be set in the bar area for us. My husband and I, along with our dog, arrived early and sat outside on the lawn for a drink. The drinks, which my husband went in to collect, took ages to pour. When everyone arrived we went inside and informed the lady on reception that we were here and we were told to go through to the bar area. When we got there, there was no obvious table for us - just a couple of tables set for two, and a large sofa area. We had to wait for the table to be set for us - involving another table being brought in from another room. By the time we were able to order drinks (which we had to go and find someone to order) - and for them to arrive, two of our guests decided that as they needed to be somewhere later in the afternoon, they couldn't risk being late as we'd already been there sometime, and so had to leave. When the rest of us ordered food, this came after about 20 minutes and was nicely presented. We shared a selection of the small plates on our table which were lovely to share. After these, we had some desserts which were nice, but a little on the small side for the price of them. All in all - average; nice surroundings and nice food, but it was missing any sparkle or anything special by way of atmosphere or service. It was nice to sit outside on the lawn and admire the surroundings on a lovely sunny day, however I doubt we will be returning in a hurry.

We ate here because we were staying at the hotel outside of Aberystwyth and preferred not to have to drive back after eating and drinking in town. While the food was decent enough, the staff is young and inexperienced and probably not very well trainined. They were nice enough and the guy made some effort to provide us some attention, but the girl couldn't have cared least. I suspect they were both students from the local university. The hotel and property are lovely, but the dining room is overly formal. That's actually ok given that the property is a restored Georgian mansion, but I think they could have made more effort to combine old and new. Worse than that was that this supposedly painstakingly and expensively renovated hotel had peeling paint in the dining room after having just opened in 2012. This should be a 5 stars experience, but is currently only 3.

Booked for Valentines meal advertised as 5 courses however on the night it turned out to be 3 courses. It has to be said that the food produced was excellent and to a very high standard. Unfortunately the service in the restaurant left an awful lot to be desired. On arrival they were uncertain what we had booked for, the advertised cocktail on arrival took a long time to materialise, there was no non-alcoholic alternative for anyone driving. The starter ordered by my husband proved to be unavailable and he had to re-select. At the end of our dessert we were left sitting for some 10 minutes with no one asking if we were interested in coffee at the end of the meal. By this time we had decided to make our way out and got up to leave. Other diners were presented with a small gift of truffles. Ours did not come until we brought this to their notice at the reception desk when leaving. We also noticed throughout our visit that the restaurant could do with additional heating. It was decidedly cold at times. Considering that this establishment purports to be 4 star it needs to pick up its standards. Sadly, the excellent food is let down by lackluster service.

Today our autumn lunch for 14 exceeded all expectations. The welcome was warm and inviting and our party was greeted by several staff. We were able to select from a menu that was not only seasonal but creative, contained a fine balance of flavours and was beautifully presented. It was very special to sit in such a wonderful and historical dining room to eat with friends. The tables were beautifully presented with fine linen and cutlery, candles and fresh flowers. Our party was so impressed that we have booked another lunch in the New Year.

Beautifully restored 18th century mansion. All staff completely devoted to the guests' experience being exceptional. Our room had a very very minor issue that did not affect our comfort but they insisted on upgrading us to the honeymoon suite, which was gorgeous and extremely spacious and comfortable.Dinner in the restaurant was delicious and breakfast was also filling and tasty.

Where to start with this place. Stayed for one night for business. It's in a quiet and peaceful location with great scenery around and great grounds. The staff are great, friendly and could not help enough. The rooms are amazing, clean, comfy, spacious and quiet. Well decorated and good selection of toiletries.I ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food was as good as any 5* restaurant I've eaten in and a decent wine selection to go with it. Breakfast was also top quality, served in a lovely separate area with great features. One of the nicest places I have stayed in the country. If I'm back in the area I will be staying here again.

We had chosen Nanteos as a place for afternoon tea to celebrate a successful year at work. Only 3 of us so we decided to treat ourselves. We were met at the door by a gentleman who felt the need to constantly remind us the he wasn't a waiter (why he didn't just get a waiter for us I don't know) We all picked the gentlemans tea. It arrived eventually and the waiter quickly buzzed off leaving us to it. Upon inspection we noticed items missing on the table that were in the menu. We had no crumpets or gentlemans relish (the main event of a gentlemans tea) no waiter to be found so we got the attention on the door man who went in search of anyone who knew what they were doing. Some time past and we were clearing up the crumbs on the plates when a young waiter appeared stinking of fresh cigarette smoke. We told him the problem and off he went. A good 10 minutes later the door man appeared with a plate of the left over cakes from the kitchen to make up for the missing items. Great.Terrible serviceOk food (if it arrives)Won't be recommending or wasting 70 odd quid on the place again!

The place itself is wonderful - great location and lovely views. We had been invited to afternoon tea by a good friend of ours to remember his late wife's birthday. There were seven of us in total. Everything had been pre-booked. We were early (we'd travelled a long way) but sat down and had coffee brought out. The rest of the party arrived, tea and coffee was sorted and then it all went pear shaped. The waiter arrived to see what we wanted and was told that it was pre-ordered. He went away and came back to say they had no record. Our friend went off to sort that out and came back to say that the computer had gone down five days before so there was no record of it. Our friend was not best pleased to say the least!! We then ordered some drinks and sandwiches and cream teas for those who wanted them. Not impressed with the sandwiches although the cream tea looked nice (I didn't have one). Apparently our friend came here for several years and all of them said it was nowhere near as good as the one last year.To be fair, our friend wasn't charged for the sandwiches or cream teas, and I cannot fault the staff. Very attentive and looking after our every needs. Some other people came in and their tea looked wonderful!! Don't think I'll bother going again. On another note - I visited the loo on arrival and one of the toilets was dirty!! Not good for a posh hotel!

Its not often that I criticise anything, but I have to let others know of our experience of Nanteos last night. We were a group of 8 who had chosen Nanteos as a special venue to celebrate the PHD graduation of my daughter and her friend. Remarkable achievements worthy of a luxury celebration. At Nanteos we were each given a menu that looked grand (at £39.95 each, it should be too). I appreciate that everything fresh should be cooked from scratch and we were all happy to wait - well not for over an hour though! When we complained we were given bread and then when we asked for more, we were given a smoked salmon on cucumber canapé. Very nice, but we were ravenous! The starter started arriving slowly. We all tucked in! It was good but hardly no effort to a good chef! After another agonising wait, the main meals started to arrive - nearly 15mins from the first dish arriving to the last bowl of chips to go with a couple of steaks that had been on the table a good five minutes. Plates were cold too!We all thought that by ordering a dessert that they would be served pretty handy - another 20min wait! So to cap it all, we sat down at 7.35pm and left at 10.50pm having eaten the dessert and left immediately! What a fiasco! Were they busy? Well, we were a table of 8 and another couple sat at an adjacent table! No more! Why couldn't they cope?Never again Nanteos, our celebration meal was a disaster!

I attended a corporate event here which was extremely well organised. That was until the hotel management had to deliver. The food was soup, chicken and Eton mess. I left after two hours without the pudding appearing. We had to ask many times for orange juice and water. It was very poor and I would not trust these people with any events or weddings.

Went here for my birthday at the beginning of the month. It's a beautiful historic building but that's where the atmosphere ends!On arrival, we were shown into a small room with a bar, given menus and asked what drinks would we like. I found the drinks a little on the expensive side! £7 for a large glass of wine!Menu choice was very good. Plenty there I could've had. I chose the crab starter, my husband had the ham hock terrine. Both were very good although I admit the terrine shaded it slightly. For mains I had hake, my husband had plaice. The hake won hands down being served with mussels on a bed of mash. We did have dessert, rhubarb crumble for him, I had the brownie. I found it a bit rich but still very nice.Enjoyed the food, but the place lacked a foodie buzz even with other customers in the dining room at the same time. Shame as it really should get the credit it deserves but we saw no locals there we knew either.

We came for Afternoon Tea for a Baby Shower with people traveling from all over the country to be there. Upon hearing that it was held here I was dubious about the decision as I hadn't had a great experience before. And surprise surprise here we all were disappointed again. We had to pre order - for 17 - two cancelled a couple of days before but when we arrived it was only set up for 11. No idea why. Thankfully we had the email trail to confirm. Despite pre ordering the orders were wrong. A few of us didn't recive tea and our food came out with about a 25 minute gap between the first and the last order. By the time the last person got her sandwiches most people had finished. The drinks orderes then got mixed up by the waitres. Only one glass of wine instead of three. The food was ok. The afternoon tea was not very well made - half of what was advertised was on it - just one sandwich !!!. Some scones were tasteless - And when we came to pay some people where charged £9 for wine and some £7 for the same glass. And some were charged £3 for a glass of coke and some were charged £4. By the same person. Which also took a good 30 minutes to pay for. A few of us had terrible service on separate events before. Some corporate - some small and private. What comes across most is the lack of training and little support given to the staff. Absolutely not their fault. It's the fault of the management. But unfortunately this seeps through to the service which was a 2* service - 3* at a big push. Nowhere near 5* (you can get a simple outline of the service levels you can and should expect from a quick simple google). I suggest that management take a hard look at their repeated failings, start supporting their staff and then maybe they will provide a more consistent service.

This was intended to be a special family meal for my sister's 50th birthday. We were a group of eight and were asked to pre book our meals as well as to pay a deposit - which seemed unusual but was not a problem. Our table was booked for 7:45 and we arrived just after 7:00 to enjoy a pre dinner drink in the bar. However, we were asked to move to our table at 7:30 before we'd had a chance to finish our drinks. We asked for more time to finish our drinks so that we could enjoy wine, rather than gin and tonic, with our starters. This was granted. When we moved to our table, we had an amuse bouche of a very dry mini pea omelette - maybe a consequence of our delayed move to the table? All the starters seemed fine until we realised that the duo of salmon had been served without the chive shortbread - the first of what turned out to be many disappointments. When the special touches are omitted from the plates, they become much more ordinary and, therefore, less value for money. Four of us had ordered the duck with duck fat chips. Although the duck was beautifully cooked to our individual preferences and the chips were also lovely, there were only six chips on each plate which wasn't sufficient to satisfy our appetites or the cost of the course in our opinion. The biggest disappointment came when we were presented with the menus to choose our desserts - not the same menu we had been asked to pre-book from! There were additional starters we hadn't been offered and the dessert most of us had fancied from the original menu was no longer available. I was so disappointed that I ordered the crab starter as my third course rather than a dessert. Four others chose sticky toffee pudding which was presented in a very traditional way and it was difficult to see or taste why it attracted a much higher price tag than in many other restaurants. The service was also disappointing - we had to wave at the waiters who passed through at the other end of the dining room in order to order additional drinks and coffees. We suspect that there was another birthday party in a separate room that was receiving precedence over our celebratory dinner. Finally, when the bill arrived, it was clear that there was no system for taking our deposit into account so we had to ask for it to be recalculated. To be fair to the staff, they did recognise our disappointment and took the price of a bottle of wine off our bill as well. The problem is that there were too many disappointments in what was supposed to be a special event for us. Neither the food nor the service met our expectations for the price we paid. We are unlikely to return or to recommend it to others, sadly.

We have eaten at Nanteos mansion a number of times and it has never disappointed us. Normally we go in the evening, but like last year we decided to go there for a Christmas lunch with some friends. And we were not disappointed. For those unfamiliar with Nanteos, the location, just outside Aberystwyth, is stunning and the mansion itself is equally so, with its high ceilinged rooms, wooden and at times slate floors. We always find the food to our taste and their Christmas lunch was very nicely done, and very filling, with a good choice of alternatives, inc. a chestnut cracker as the vegetarian option. As last year we were the only people there for lunch which meant we were seated in the bar area - not perhaps the best location as there was constant toing and froing from the staff servicing a wedding party. But we so enjoyed ourselves that we were there for three hours without noticing the time passing. Look forward to returning next year for an evening out again.

We attended a family wedding reception in this beautiful mansion and it's lovely surroundings! We were lucky and the sun shone down on the happy couple! Which also meant we could enjoy the views. Many of the guests stayed here so the whole mansion was filled with family! The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble, including the food and drink served to me, instead of strawberries due to my allergy. The replacements were already waiting, unlike most places where I have to give a reminder. So full marks for that! I would have no hesitation in recommending Nanteos Mansion and I hope to return here next time I am in the area to sample their afternoon tea! ((minus the strawberry jam of course!)

You won't eat at Nanteos on a whim. Instead, it'll probably be somewhere that you;ll go to for an occasion like a birthday. And based on two recent dinners at the restaurant, it should not disappoint. Steak, turbot, duck, and lamb were all good. We never got to the desserts but enjoyed the excellent cheese plate. Celebrated an 89th birthday here on Sunday with afternoon tea. Beautiful place in terms of the setting and house- tea a little pricey ( its not Chelsea !), but sandwiches very good and all home made cakes etc.Internal decor a little bland , a touch of Holiday Inn in a beautiful old house- but glad I haven't had to pick up the tab for the refurb !Looked around the property, would suggest that breakfast was served in a lighter room at front of the house, bar and restaurant looked a little formal and dated, and shown one room by very very friendly GM, and felt that the budget must have run out when it came to the bathroom fittings. Will return for dinner when next in west Wales. Stunning views over the lake and out to the hills.Only negative comment was that the staff seemed to be infatuated with Health and Safett rules, quoting them constantly- also suggest that history of the Holy Grail is a little hidden ?

I was invited to a birthday meal at nanteos mansion and had been given mixed reviews. The meal was not to standard and the steak so fatty I couldn't be bothered to finish it! The starter was very average and the drinks were extremly over priced. I love cocktails but they deffinetly did not know how to make a passionfruit mojito! I did not complain as I was invited out as a party of four we spent over £230 in 2 hours, I will pay fpr qualtiy but on this occasion it was not quality!!! I posted a tweet on twitter and a few days later attended a wedding fayre where I was asked to come outside I did so where I was then interrogated about my meal infront of people, the chef then felt he would interrogate me and basically called me a liar and said you should have said in the evening! I pointed out that it wasn't polite to when you have been invited out and did not want to spoil the atmosphere. One thing is for sure I would not have my wedding there!!!
