Maria's Coffee Sandwich Bar in Bromley

On a rare shopping trip to Beckenham High St we stumbled across Maria’s Coffee and Sandwich shop. I’m so glad we did!!! The service was fantastic. The food was very reasonably priced and was cooked and tasted great. We will definitely be back and would recommend it to anyone looking for food and lovely drink.

We have for the last year been working our way through the many cafes in Beckenham and stopped at Maria`s for a pre Christmas lunch. Very friendly welcome and good service whilst we were there. Plenty of food on the plates, at a reasonable price and everybody was satisfied with their meals.

Beautiful cafe, authentic food, great service. I would recommend this cafe to everyone who visits Beckenham.

Lovely cafe run by a wonderful couple. Very welcoming atmosphere and broad choice of hot and cold food. Seems like a stable for locals and will be mine as well!

Love going here for lunch with the kids at the weekend. Home cooked meals with a smile! The carbonara is gorgeous and panini's are great too.

We have been regular visitors to Aldo & Maria’s for many years. The food is always excellent and Aldo & Maria are warm, friendly hosts. It is definitely the best place for freshly cooked lunch / brunch in Beckenham and very popular with many locals.

I came into the restaurant excited to try the food as I love Italian and it seemed like a family run, cheap place to eat. I needed the toilet first though and was told it was only for paying customers, which was understandable. After being shown where the toilet was by the lovely gentleman, I sat down and ordered pesto. I was told that it was made by them and it was fresh. I can safely say it was one of the blandest things I’ve ever tasted. I was asked by the gentlemen how I liked my food and replied with honesty. His excuse was that should have ordered something else. When the woman came to charge me, she rudely told me that if I just wanted to use the toilet, then I should go to Costa. I explained that in actually did want to eat there and I needed to go before I sat down (not that I should have to explain myself). After expressing that I wanted to eat there, but I just didn’t enjoy what I was served, she told me that pesto is a bland dish and there was nothing she could do. Very poor customer service. Felt very uncomfortable and would not go again. Shame, as the desserts looked quite nice.

Bought a bagel from here to take away, ate half before realising it was mouldy!! Hope I don't get ill...

We felt discriminated by the owners, must be because we are indian sikhs and we wore turbans. The lady owner was very argumentative. They probably did not want us back in their cafe again.

After saying for several years just how wonderful Marias food is ,I was upset that I was not welcome to come in for a coffee and cake with friends as it was just for lunch? It was 2pm and had many free tables! I will not be returning and definitely not recommending any more. Trying to eat and shop local but not here !

We have lived in Beckenham for over 20 years and have been going to Maria's and Aldo's. Maria is an excellent cook, her food are fresh and delicious and the service is absolutely outstanding. The food is consistently outstanding and there is no comparison with other newly opened local sandwich bars around, as we tried them all, being locals. All our family love the food. They have given a Mediterranean taste to Beckenham, The food is authentic and service always absolutely impeccable, there are a large selection of sandwiches and meals. Our daughter (Sophie) who has just gone to Uni rang to say how much she misses Maria's sandwiches and Aldo's great service! We all miss those fantastic Saturday mornings at the welcoming coffee shop of Maria and Aldo's with those sublime brunches and those great laughters!

We live round the corner and have been going to Maria and Aldo's for years and years. The food is homemade and excellent and service fantastic. We hope that they are okay during pandemic.

We have been using Maria & Aldo’s for a number of years now and it is always absolutely excellent - the food is delicious, and Aldo & Maria are always so warm, friendly and welcoming. We have really missed them when they were closed during ‘lockdown’ and are so happy that they are now open for take away, and will be able to open up fully for customers to sit inside again very soon.

When my wife and I go to Beckenham high street we only head for one place for our coffee. It has to be Maria’s & Aldo’s every time, you are always greeted by two wonderful people always a pleasure to chat and see there smiling faces even on a pouring rainy Saturday when we went. That did not stop us from indulging in the most amazing Pecan pie warmed up and served with ice cream yummy does not describe it well enough, and the Victoria sponge was just as tasty to. Your always greeted and served to perfection at this little gem of a place👍🏻❤️❤️ Can’t wait to see what’s in the chiller next time we visit👍🏻see you soon Maria & Aldo

Never been here before so took a chance as cold and hungry. A cosy warm welcoming little place, great service, piping hot food. Exactly what I wanted yummy. They do great pies for dessert too. ALdo was funny Will go back again

Excellent family run cafe/restaurant. Have been coming here for over 8 years and always have a great welcome from Aldo and Maria the owners. Great coffee, sandwiches, breakfast and lunches.In our opinion the best in Beckenham for friendliness, food and service. Nothing is too much trouble.

The specials are excellent value for money and the coffee is brilliant. Second visit here and will return again.

I take no pleasure writing this, but I was stunned by my experience. At 12 noon went into the cafe. It was three-quarters empty. We went to sit down at an empty table, but we’re told, abruptly, to sit at another table. Why? There was no logic. We were tempted to leave, but didn’t. We were then asked for our order. It was two coffees. We were told we couldn’t be served as it was lunchtime. We got up and left. Perhaps the owners need to drop ‘coffee’ from the shop signage? Whilst I want to support independent traders, I’m afraid I shan’t be returning if I won’t be offered any kind of customer service. It’s pity as I’m local.

Been going to Maria's for many years and it remains the best Sandwich shop in Beckenham. Both Maria and Aldo are so friendly, the food is always fresh and the amount of regulars who go there says all you need to know.

I have just had the pleasure of being asked to leave as only my work colleague wanted lunch. We were sitting on the same table so the logic doesnt make sense. When I got up to leave I was offered deal...this is not a brexit negaition, this is a two bit ocffee shop in Beckenham. You try and help the local shop over Costa and Starbucks of the world and you are asked to leave. I have worked in Beckenham for over 10 years; my feedback has also been posted in our office for the 100 staff to view. Well done Maria have a lovely day.

Very fresh food, home cooked ham and turkey, salads and Imaginative garnish when not ordering salad, friendly service and good coffee. Not cheap but you get what you pay for

Been going to Marias for years on and off at lunch. Only thing I order is a jacket potato with tuna. Every time i go in its a different price ranging from £3.50 to £4.50..Go in today Maria charges me £5. I asked how comes, and she said thats what it is in the menu. I explained it isnt what i have paid in the past (last 7 years) to which she replied I must be thinking of another shop. To me it seems Maria makes up the prices as she goes along just to get whatever out of her customers.Wont be visting ever again!

Very good choice OF food and good service. Maria and Aldo make everyone welcome and take an interest in their customers many of whom are regulars.Also excellent take away service which is very popular with local businesses.

I cannot speak more highly of this Cafe. We have made it our regular lunchtime stop from the office. The food is good home cooked fare and the coffee is to die for.......What else can I say.

Lovely food during a bustling lunch trade at this little cafe. Pannis are huge and the omelette was excellent. A few mistakes made as the order wasn’t written down but those were rectified very quickly. The coffee was very nice. It was good value.

Delicious poached eggs, avocado and ham off the bone and two slices off lovely granary toast. Always a warm welcome

Arrived at 11:40am on Saturday for 2 flat whites to be told we weren't allowed to just order coffee as it was lunch time. Not sure when pre noon was ever considered lunch time, and with quick service we would have been out of there in 15 mins. Just lost some business from us.

I rarely write reviews but am compelled to let everyone know what greedy, rude buggers the owners (presumably Aldo and Maria?) are. I went in this morning for breakfast. I was told that there was a minimum £10 order to pay by card so I ordered a full breakfast, an orange juice and a coffee. I ate the very average and overpriced breakfast and then drank my coffee as I was doing some work assessments. The cafe was soon filling up and the man started sitting separate parties at the same table. The minute I finished my coffee, he took my cup and asked if I wanted any cake. I said no but knew what he was implying. Two minutes later, the woman came over and asked if I wanted cake. Again, I said no but felt so uncomfortable I got up to leave. The woman apologised to me on the way out. I had been in the cafe approximately 20 minutes. Judging by other reviews, this is what they consider to be normal customer service....... take the money and throw the customer out. I won't be going back and urge others not to. It's a mystery why anyone would go there. Costa and Cafe Nero will let you linger as long as you want and the staff are much friendlier. So much for supporting local business.

I went to this cafe, thinking in coffee chains to enjoy a breakfast by myself on a Saturday. After having what I ordered I was finishing my coffee (which altogether cost 10 pounds!)- I hadn't been in the place for longer than 15 min - and the owner came to ask me if I didn't want anything else I had to leave because he needed the table!!

I had lunch here with my boyfriend and it was lovely! The service was great & so was the food! Would definitely recommend & will also go back when I'm in beckenham again :)

Went in for lunch with my cousins and their baby and before we were seated, a lady who we were assuming is Maria aggressively scolding us for bringing in some coffee. We were expecting to throw away our coffees and we didn't mind since it was free from Waitrose down the street, but she basically yelled at us and caused a scene. This basically put us off and ruined the entire meal because we all felt awkward. Felt like our mother scolding us.

This is a good place for light lunches and sandwiches for lunch. Friendly, attentive, fast service, very clean, Popular place with local "lunchers"

After getting pampered in a local beauty shop in Beckenham, my sister and I decided to go for some lunch. My sister lives in Brighton and I live in Beckenham so we were spending a bit of quality time together before her drive back home. Upon entering Maria's Coffee Sandwich Bar, we sat down at a free table and were about to read the menu. Before we even managed to pick up the menu, we were very rudely told that the table we were sitting at was soon to be taken...however, there wasn't anyone in the Sandwich Bar waiting to be seated and there wasn't a 'reserved' sign on the table. Furthermore, we were under the impression it was a first-come-first served cafe, not a cafe where you have to pre-book! There were two outdoor tables available (it was a lovely Summer's day) - however instead of being directed to the two vacant tables outside, we were asked to leave. I have never been so embarrassed in my life and I will never ever step foot back into this establishment again! I have literally just joined TripAdvisor to share this experience. I am not surprised to see similar experiences of poor customer service at this establishment. Hugely offended and outraged that the owners are selective of perspective paying customers. My sister and I were both paying customers in our mid and late twenties - not children with a little bit of pocket money to spend. .

Popped in for a coffee and was both surprised and amazed by the effort the staff went to make their coffee! The Italian owners are genuine and lovely people who care about their place and their customers

Lovely freshly cooked late breakfast/brunch - perfect! Lots of choice including a pasta dish of the day. Friendly owners too.

It's not hard to get things right serving the type of food and drink they sell here, and having been going to Maria's with my wife for a few years they are more than capable.It's also not hard to provide a nice friendly atmosphere, good customer service and make your customers feel welcome.So why when someone has just finished drinking a cup of tea, and is on their last mouthful of food would the owner come along and ask you to leave just because other people were arriving and you wanted the table free? Did you stop and consider that the person you asked to leave was going to be joined by their partner - NO you didn't. So, well done to Maria for being exceptionally rude to someone who has spent plenty of money in your cafe, and will now never step foot inside again. As a Beckenham born and bred person, I frequent the independent cafes in Beckenham, and have done so for the duration of my life. Never before have I experienced such total disdain by a proprietor. A stunning example of how to loose customers. For the record, another customer noticed this and commented that this was not the 1st time they had witnessed this behavior. Goodbye Maria's you will not be receiving our support ever again.

A good quality breakfast in pleasant friendly surroundings. A busy cafe at certain times due to its popularity serving a varied menu. A friendly couple run the cafe.

Always my first choice in Beckenham and has been for the last 6 years!Excellent food, hygiene and excellent service on every visit.Owners are always a bundle of laughs and customers (new or regular) are always smiling when entering and leaving this place.......One word of advice would be to get there early as the food is delicious and daily specials get sold pretty quick!

Fresh bread, fresh meat and produce, fresh everything!Maria and Aldo are the most welcoming couple and they make breakfast, brunch or lunch such a pleasure. The quality and presentation of their food is always wonderful.Went there for breakfast again today and not sure where they buy their bacon but it is the best I have tasted and cooked to perfection.No nonsense, quick service and always with a smile, often with a joke thrown in!

Absolutely disgusted with the owners.Shocking!!So today, 6 very harrowing months after our baby was born 9 weeks premature, weighing 3lb 12oz, requiring a month in hospital and ongoing weekly hospital appointments .....I finally felt ready to leave him and my 2 bigger boys to have my first alone time.I went for an incredible massage and then headed for a drink and a bite to eat. I ruled out the coffee chain shops as I thought it would be nice to support a local business. I saw Maria's Sandwich Bar and decided to give it a try.Arriving around 11:30 I took a two seater table in the window. I had a cheese/ham croissant and a pot of peppermint tea.As I haven't had a moment to myself I took the opportunity to write thank you cards for the gifts people had bought for our baby. Very overdue!!I was aware that I wanted to be in the cafe until 2ish when I would head home, so over the next hour I ordered 3 more pots of tea while writing and had decided to have some lunch around 1pm. At 12:30, I asked for my 4th pot of tea and was planning to decide on my lunch order while drinking it.INSTEAD I WAS ASKED TO LEAVE!!!!!!!I was gobsmacked. The owner said they needed the table as the lunch time rush would be happening soon.What a way to treat someone. Perhaps she could have used a little more foresight and asked if I would like to see the lunch menu. The answer would have been yes, she would have made a lot more money out of me throughout the next hour and I would probably have returned. Instead, thanks to her rude, unprofessional manner I won't be returning but she can rest assured I will be telling everyone of my neighbours, parents from school, parents from pre-school and mums from the hospital.What a disgusting way to treat a paying customer and how to stomp all over my well earned morning out.

Have been going to Maria's for many years now. Both Maria and Aldo are such great fun and their frendliness is infectious. The food is just excellent and usually it is filled with regulars - if you are not you will soon get drawn into the conversation. Have been to breakfast and also lunch. Great quality food, well presented and served with enthusiasm by both. My wife and I have enjoyed lunch twice over the last week (very good food and service) If you want a good breakfast / lunch I would urge you to go to Maria's (hopefully you won't be dissapointed - I'm NOT)

Maria's has been a favourite of mine for years because of the happy reception you always receive from the owners and the well priced fresh food they serve. It's great to support a local stand alone eaterie. Only issue is you can't always get a seat!!!

My wife and I always try to pop into Marias( now called Aldos ) for our lunch or just coffee and cake when we are shopping, a great place for awesome food and some great cakes the scones with jam and cream are to die for!!always pleased to see you Aldo & maria always seem to be smiling and so they should this little place is a gem

We have been popping to Maria's (or Aldo's, as I think it is at the moment - his turn to have his name above the door!) for lunch for many years now. Aldo and Maria are very warm and welcoming, the service is excellent and the food deceptively good for a cafe. There is a wide range of ciabatta and sandwich options, as well as cooked food. If you go for one of the Italian, tasty specials, you won't need to eat again that day! This is just what an independent cafe should be - long May it last.

If you are looking for a warm friendly cafe which serves great food fresh baguettes, cooked food and the chips are great with specialist foods of the day like home cooked fish cakes, five bean salads and quiches then this is the place to go.The husband and wife team will make you very welcome and their service stands apart from the rest. Great coffee served nice and hot and full of flavour with great food to match mixed and matched to your exact requirements.Its quite small seats about 20. I've been living in Beckenham for 12 years and Maria's is my absolute favourite spot. The food is always so fresh and tasty, the service is friendly - Maria and Aldo are fabulous and work so hard. They take pride in everything they do. You won't get a better sandwich/coffee/salad/cake. Please support this wonderful, independent cafe. You won't look back!

Visit Aldo and MAria for a bite of lite lunch and I would say try their ham. Its the bestest njcest ham to have in a lovely baguette. You can get a better latte than Costa here too !

Visited the place today with a friend for lunch, and what a pleasant and enjoyable experience it was.I had panini with mozzarella and sun dried tomato and my friend egg Benedict, which we both really enjoyed. I also had chocolate and orange cake, delicious!Coffee was was great too, but I think what makes the place stand out from the rest, is the owners, they were brilliant!I will definitely be back!

I don't care for tea or coffee generally so I've visted this place a few times just for the food. It's wonderful and both Aldo and Maria are very friendly. I'm not in a rambling mood so:- Great service- Great food- Reasonable pricesRecommended.

Easily the best cafe in Beckenham. Open 0700-1600 Monday to Saturday. I've been coming here for a few years now, husband and wife team Aldo and Maria are always welcoming and friendly. This place is very popular with the locals and gets busy at lunchtimes. Sometimes you have to wait a few minutes for a table, and for that reason you have to order some food, not just drinks. The menu is extensive (including takeaway) and there are three different specials each day - usually one pasta dish among them. You will pay London prices (a full english breakfast with tea and toast will cost you £7.80) but you get what you pay for. The ingredients are always very good. Highly recommended.

Feel compelled to write this review on service and friendliness alone. Sat near the counter and it was clear that regulars and first time visitors were treated in the same lovely welcoming way. I just had a ham and cheese panini which was nice and hubby had the special of the day. Would definitely return if we go back to Beckenham.

I always enjoy coming here. The husband and wife team are very friendly and make you feel very welcome. We came for breakfast around mid morning. The food was very nice and well presented. I agree with others that this is a little piece of Italy and a real gem. The only reason I give it 4 rather than 5 , was the price.2 breakfasts 2 coffees and a milk came to over £17. I was happy to pay this and leave a tip. I guess this is beckenham where places can charge what they want and you accept this. I will return.

We're regulars in this fabulous little sandwich bar, owned by local people who are really lovely. The coffee is the best in town and there are always specials on the menu. There is always a warm welcome for everyone.

Now known as 'Aldo's' this cafe is the best treasure beckenham has! Not only is the food outstanding with a wide range of freshly made sandwiches but the owners are lovely and genuinely enjoy serving you! Please visit this cafe so we don't loose this AMAZING treasure!!!

Have dined at Maria's many times. I now meet 2 friends for a saturday breakfast at least twice a month. Both Maria and Aldo [her husband] are so friendly and the atmosphere is good. Aldo is the perfect host [not because he supports SPURS as I do] but his enthusiasm in infectious as is Maria's. Ther bacon and egg sarnie [white bread] is just supberb. There are lots to choose from for breakfast but it has to be a bacon and egg sarnie for me. Have dined at Maria's for lunch also with my wife and have enjoyed that also. Normally there are a couple of hot meals on offer such as pasta [Aldo in Italian] and sometimes dishes such as Paella [Maria is Spanish] If you want a good breakfast or lunch get along to Maria's in Beckenham High Street

This is my favourite place for lunch in Beckenham. The food is always fresh. The specials are melt in the mouth delights, all reasonably priced. The husband and wife are truly lovely and accommodating especially when young mum's turn up with children. This is somewhere for everyone, office workers, mums, ladies of all ages who lunch and people that just dine alone. Everyone is welcome and made to feel a friend.

The food is fresh and tasty and they do lovely daily specials! Very popular amongst locals you can't always get a seat but they do take away as well! Love this place.
