Manze M in Southwark

I've been to Manze's Tower Bridge Rd about a dozen times over the years. The pie and mash has always been totally authentic and just perfect. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful. I saw them today taking time to explain to several tourists what the food was all about. The surroundings are also exactly how they should be for a traditional Pie & Mash shop. 10 out of 10 all round! I find my own experiences here totally at odds with the few negative reviews. Either they were really unlucky or had unrealistic expectations of what authentic pie and mash should be.

Firstly, id say if youre not familiar with London, its on the other end of Tower BRIDGE RD, - Bermondsey , and much nearer to London Bridge, than Tower Bridge, It can be got to on a c 10 bus from Victoria, which is just Round the corner from the restautaunt and goes all the way back to Victoria. I took my son there because he was very dissapointed with 'Cockneys ' in Croydon which he said had gone very much down hill ,so i took him to a proper - old fashioned authentic PIE AND Mash shop wich we were told by the lovely lady working there had been in the family for over a centuary - The shop is quite cosy , and cleary a favorite of the locals .. I had a vegan pie and Mash and the gravy which is lovely , and my son had the traditional 'Pie Mash and liquor '- Price wise its very good as it was only £16.odd, with a tea, that my Son had and i had a can of soda, - if you wish to have a traditional PIE AND MASH , thats the place to go -if youre in London- but dont make the mistake of going on the district and circle line to Tower Bridge- as its a VERY VERY LONG WALK from there- The lady working there also said 'Oh no thats really far'when we told her ! However i found it a very pleasant very reasonable propper London traditional little treat .Pies are all handmade, and Fresh . and the pastry is very nice , so is the gravy, and the mash - no-complaints at all

I've been here before but a few years back and it was decent then. On this occasion - not nice at all. Pie's under cooked on the base over cooked on the top which made cutting the pie up a challenge! Filling flavourless and not much of it... Will not be returning here.

Popped on this week and a real trip down memory lane. Exactly the same as when I last visited 20+ years ago. Same benches, marble table tops and heavy cutlery…. Pie and mash is a personal favourite and I topped off with liquor and a splash of chilli vinegar and white pepper (I don’t do eels) I promise not to leave it soo long between visits

Restaurant was dirty, back to back seats not screwed to the floor so every time the people on the next table moved, I nearly stabbed my tonsils. Pie was undercooked on the bottom and overcooked on top. Ingredients nothing more than cheap rubbish. Traditional gravy bland and tasteless. It was the worst meal I've ever had.

Great food and friendly, polite service in this wonderful, sympathetically kept, very clean establishment. No frills but so worth the visit. My veggie pie was delicious.

Visited on 3/4/24 and all I can really say is delicious, ordered pie, mash and liqueur and with 1st bite regretted not getting the double option. Wanted to try jellied eel but wasn't brave enough to get a full portion of them but was given a free stewed eel to try (equally tasty but in a different way) Highly recommended for anyone visiting or living in London. Will definitely be back.

Very disappointing, my husband always wanted to go here but the food was awful. Hard pastry I could hardly cut through with tiny portion of mince inside, tasteless mash and congealed liquor. Grubby place

A fantastic experience on so many levels. If you want a slice of London history with a delicious and affordable meal thrown in, visit Manze’s. Food: simple and delicious. Staff: Warm and friendly is such an understatement and doesn’t do them justice Atmosphere: I could have sat there all day just soaking up the atmosphere and experience. It was our first time here but they treated us just like the many locals who came and went during our time there. There were so many “thanks love”, “take care”, and “happy new year”. One lady overheard us talking and went out of her way to wish me “hoppy birthday”. Even in busy Bermondsey you can tell this is a neighborhood gem. Value for money: You won’t find better in all of London. I left with a t-shirt so I can represent while in Chicago.

Visited for the first time hoping for an authentic, London pie and mash experience. Walked in to 4 girls behind the counter messing around, being loud and totally ignoring us. When I was finally asked what I wanted, not seeing the pie options a available (only other pie & mash at Greenwich had loads of options), I was stared at as if I was causing an issue before being told it was mince or veggie mince. We ordered 3 mince and 1 veggie but had to wait for the veggie, fair enough. Not having my harasses on, looming over the counter into the fridge I asked what drinks they had, she pointed up to a shelf with only 4 cand on it and said, "the options are up there" despite there being g a lot more than 4 options in the fridge. We waited 20 mins+ for the pies to be ready but they weren't delivered, one of the noisy girls came over to tell us it was ready and we had to go back up and wait. The pies are very poor quality, hard pastry, very sparse filling and very underwhelming all round. I wouldn't go here again, the whole experience was way short of what I expected.

Food itself is good but hygiene is another matter I watched a lady wash up and cutlery glasses plates just dunked in water not washed properly see members of staff outside smoking didn't see any hand washing after. Also people serving behind counters have zero customerservice and joke and chat amongst themselves just ignorant rude people and if it was my establishment I'd sack them all.

Wow just the best pie and mash ever plus super nice people who helped two old men to order make mistakes and still fell important – Thank you and the chili vinegar to die for…

To be honest. I was looking for a Pie and Mash Shop and had limited time, this was the only one open on a Monday that I could find. Slight wait in the queue but pleasant and efficient staff who delt with it. Welcoming young woman served me. A customer was next to me. I dropped my walking stick which I was using because of a recent injury. She picked up my stick and offered to carry my plate for me. So friendly customers as well. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Triple pie single mash and liquor. I know not a lot but I am an elderly man and cannot manage what I use to. Went down a treat. Had a nice conversation with the helpful lady and her equally friendly family.( Non Londoners please understand this next bit is ironic) This is hard, I am an East London bloke and to praise a South London Pie and Mash shop and it's customers does no come easy. They deserve it. If I can renew my visor and grit my teeth I will be back for more, even when other pie and mash shops are open.

I have visited Manze in Tower Bridge Road on a number of occasions and I always enjoy the pie and mash in there. I have also ordered a chilled delivery online a few times now too, and it always turns up very well packaged with ice packs in the box to keep the food chilled whilst in transit. Excellent service and if you spend over a certain amount you get great discounts. On my last order I bought a Manze t-shirt and tea mug as well. Will definitely order from again.

Dreadful food, cheap, cheap pie filling, poor tasteless mash, filthy restaurant behind the scenes, small portions. Go to Mother Mash instead!

Go past it every morning and see all the cooks smoking out front Went in there today and one cook smoking and two serving staff outside smoking they all came in started serving and no one washed there hands As for the pies they looked a bit raw inside

Was very dissatisfied, dissapoint. filthy table's,floors, i watched how the women washed up,,it was Disgusting, just dip the plate's everyone eats from in water once and out they came to go back in pile for next customer omg,severe germs and infection red flag, same as knives and forks i watched.couldn beleive what i was witnessing.the staff were very dirty looking unkept unclean looking.The other main thing,,,,the pie was alright,the mash was absolutely rubbish, dirty again,not nicely done,dry, and the parsley sauce was absolutely rubbish,, just no taste not made properly or with love,was like washing up water, seriously needs remaking everything from scratch!! They have wrecked the whole joint and food,,,no love, no care for the food or customers,,,BIG SHAME

M. Manze is an old, simple Victorian eatery, essentially a Victorian equivalent of fast food, serving a small range of simple, traditional items, notably steak pies, stewed eels, and jellied eels, accompanied by mash and queen liquor (parsley gravy). They also serve their own sarsaparilla. One orders at the counter and takes one's tray of food to to the table. The food is simple but tasty and there's plenty of malt vinegar to put on it. It is also a great experience to find such an old-fashioned work-a-day place still going strong. It can get crowded but not necessarily.

We had a lovely experience of pie. mash, green liquor and jellied eels at the restaurant on Saturday night - we had a table / booth and the place was busy inside as well as with take-aways! The pies are scrumptious, liquor very tasty and the jellied eels unique - the ladies serving were very jolly and clearly enjoyed their jobs. Good atmosphere, and good food at a reasonable price.

Visited manze tower bridge road with a big order to bring back to weymouth Dorset .... We was served with great customer service and felt so welcomed ... All the staff were joking away with us . When we got home and tucked into our pies we was not disappointed best pie & liquor we've had ... Thank you manzes

Don’t go to London very often but had to go to London Bridge so when I finished it was mandatory to nip round to Manze’s in Tower Bridge Road. Great food with a large glass of sarsaparilla to wash it down with. Chilli vinegar of course. Very nice staff and it’s a pity we don’t live near London otherwise it wouldn’t have been five years since my last visit.

I went today and was very disappointed with the hole traditional pie and mash thing they are going on. I didn't felt welcoming as a customer when I walked in the shop. one off the staff was talking too much that she gave me a headache and properly would give a paracetamol a run for his money. I do not want to know about their personal life, I just wanted to sit down quietly and try and enjoy my food. but that did not happen . the pie and mash was swimming in liquor the the pie itself was burnt and on top of that it definitely didn't tasty good. I do not no were all of these people get these reviews from .even the floor was very dirty nd the debris was blowing into the shop with the leafs etc , but they didn't care, I see that they have FSA licence (food standards agency )how did the FSA agency have given them 5* what a joke , it should be a2*I'm not the one for pictures but lets put it this way the shop and advertise is NOT LIKE CATALOGUE PICTURE. Traditional food. Traditional ambiance. Traditional experience all round. It doesn’t look much from outside but trust me it brings back childhood memories of visiting my Nan.

Went to have a double double after many years of waiting as we now live in Weston-super-mare. And I must admit it was well worth the wait. Very friendly staff and excellent service and the pie and mash was delicious thank you very much.

My dad took me here when we visited the hms Belfast around 1973, have vague recollections of green tiles ,pie, mash and liquor. So return visit long overdue. Great value good honest food with loads of bermondsey charm. Definitely worth eating in for the experience.

My regular pie mash shop, ordered a take away for the 1st time, it was delivered 10 minutes earlier than scheduled time, food was still hot and very enjoyable too. Will be ordering again

We was looking for a treat to have whoslat in lockdown. i ordered this off there website and I wasn't let down by far the best pie and mash I've ever had brilliant service brilliant food so flavorsome nothing else can match it.

Over promised under delivered.Being from East London I consider this dish my own. On arrival I asked for (I know) vegetarian double double. I also asked for a double single (meat) for my husband. The staff were not really paying attention and didn’t seem to give a damn about the customers. Please see above about being from east London I’m not concerned about swearing however the ladies taking my order were using language which made me uncomfortable. Coupled with the fact that I had to repeat my order three times tells me they didn’t care about the customers and were too wrapped up in their own world.When I got my order (was wrong I got a single mash) the pie had been microwaved and the mash was dry. The liquor barely covered the dish which is a school boy error when serving pie mash and liquor.I could hear the staff chatting while eating and again the tone of conversation was not one I wanted to hear. Mainly based around having to wash their hands more with the Coronavirus issues. I can’t see me making the trip back to Manze’s any time soon after this experience.

Brought up on Pie ‘n’ mash and Manze’s will always be my favourite shop. Never disappoints. Always a great atmosphere !!

Traditional pie and mash shop, tasty pie, mash and ‘liquor’, pretty cheap and very tasty. Order, pay and you get your pie straight away, no queue when we went, but it did get busier.

A great experience , pies are how you would want them , mash is great as was the liqueur , situated on Tower bridge road , Bermondsey , totally recommended.

We had wanted to visit here after hearing it was one of the oldest pie shops in London. We arrived at approx 1pm and we were lucky to get a seat. Not long after we sat down, there was a queue out the door. The pie, mash and liquor was great, very tasty and hearty for a cold winters day. It was fantastic value.

Locale antico, una istituzione...abbiamo preso come sempre un piatto unico con tortino di manzo in crosta, con accanto un purè di patate con salsa di prezzemolo. 14 sterline.veramente piacevole, anche se la fila arriva fuori dal locale.

Le titre résume tout, je ne sais pas comment mieux le dire. Ce n'est pas parce qu'il est ancien qu'on doit tout pardonner à un restaurant. La sauce verte qu'on voit sur la photo est insipide, clairement de la boite (elle arrive par seaux du sous-sol, vu de mes yeux vu). L'anguille n'a guère de saveur quand on la mange telle quelle et pas camouflée dans un gros chausson. La purée est basique, ni beurre ni sel ni rien. Le service est expéditif, le cadre moins aguichant qu'un hôpital. Je l'avais pourtant trouvé dans mon Guide du Routard... Comme quoi...

Great staff , great atmosphere , great food value for money.. the bad reviews on here are from middle class food critics who shouldn’t have gone to this type of establishment in the first place .... you know who you are..

Ambiance simple et british, loin des foules touristiques. Un bon plat chaud roboratif sans chichi et à prix doux pour une famille.

As an Englishman who became a Kiwi I still have a hankering for traditional East End pie and mash. Whilst staying on the South Bank a 2 km walk worked up an appetite for double pie mash and liquor (green gravy). My Kiwi wife had single pie and mash with regular gravy. The pies were nicely cooked, well done on top as is the tradition. The mash was creamy and the liquor delicious. The staff were all friendly and helpful. If I get the time I will get back for another helping before returning to New Zealand!

Visited Manzes on 20th December and it was well worth the wait. The atmosphere was wonderful. Food was o tasty, pie, mash, eels and liqueur. The eels melted in your mouth. I would recommend to visit and only just a 5 minute walk from Tower Bridge. Unfortuneatly deleted my photos

Had a recent trip there early on a Saturday as I had a long day socialising with friends ahead of me.

Being a pie and mash and liquor addict I am always keen to try places that I had not been to before . This PML shop is definitely one of the best in London - many believe it to be the best - or certainly in the top 5 . Pies were hot and tasty with plenty of meat , lovely smooth mash and glorious liquor ( parsley sauce ) - then you put on plenty of white pepper and hot chilli vinegar to finish it off .

Visited Manze’s last weekend before we had a jaunt around London. As expected the queues were out the door at lunchtime but we were happy to wait. Service was quick, cheery and as always the turnaround was quick so we could easily grab a pew to eat our double/double...had a fella join us on our table where we reviewed other pie and mash shops, local and further afield. The pie was perfect crisp with a nice base and superb filling, liquor was tasty and the mash was as it should be...scraped on the plate to act as a defence against slopping your liquor all over the floor. Sasperilla is on offer, as are plenty of cans of soft drinks, but we had a steaming hot strong cuppa to wash it down. The best P&M; we’ve had in London!

Manze's has been in this location for over 100 years and it still has the lovely tiled interior and wooden benches. Today, with friends, we had pies, mash, liquor - all extremely plentiful, hot and good quality - and stewed eels, which our friends said were very good. The staff are super efficient, friendly and helpful and they clear and clean the tables with the speed of light. Very reasonable prices. Had a glass of sarsaparilla, which took me back to my childhood days at Baldwin's stall down East Lane, Sunday mornings. This is not a place where you would linger over a long lunch - you queue, get your grub, wolf it down and leave - job done! And job done very well!! Delicious. Their opening hours are very limited, so check out their website before going, to save disappointment!

On a beaucoup marché pour y aller, sur indication du guide Lovely planet. Mais on n'a pas regretté ! Pour le cadre et l'ambiance (c'est l'Angleterre profonde !). Après, pour la gastronomie, c'est autre chose. C'est au niveau de la cuisine anglaise d'il y a une trentaine d'années (depuis, ils ont fait des progrès considérables). Cà rappelle le bon vieux temps, et il faut en profiter car ce genre d'établissement aura disparu avant trente ans !

My first ever visit to a traditional pie and mash shop. A small queue outside showed the popularity of this shop with mainly local customers. Fast and efficient service from the friendly staff. Traditional pies (2) mash and liquor very tasty. Great atmosphere with tiled walls, marble topped tables and wooden benches. I will try the eels next time!

Been going to Manze at Tower Bridge Rd since i was 3 years old. A really traditional experience, the shop still as all its original features, the pie and mash & liquor is really tasty,staff are very friendly. Every time we have friends visit from overseas, we always bring them here so that they can experience this wonderful dish.

Visitamos Manzes TBR para el almuerzo del sábado, nos enteramos en el momento en que nos acercamos a la tienda que sería bueno ya que los clientes estaban haciendo cola para entrar, a pesar de esto, las damas uniformadas verdes nos sirvieron rápidamente. Pedimos 2 tartas y 2 puré con licor y no tuvimos problemas para encontrar un asiento. Mi esposa nunca había tenido P&M; antes y me sorprendió gratamente la calidad y la frescura de la comida. Su buena comida honesta de la vieja escuela a un precio decente que dio en el clavo. Gracias por la tradición y la experiencia.

Para ser brutalmente honesto, el pastel y el puré que obtuve hoy fue terrible, muy mal hecho con pasteles que eran como el cartón y el puré de papas estaba muy por debajo del promedio, a la salsa de perejil le faltaba sabor, lo siento por la crítica negativa

Visité Manzes para probar pastel y puré por primera vez, no me decepcionó. El pastel estaba delicioso, la pastelería era escamosa y ¡grandes porciones de puré!

Visité hoy por primera vez y no me decepcionó! Las tartas son hermosas y el puré increíble. No soy un fanático de los licores, pero no por Manzes, prefiero la salsa, que también era deliciosa. Sin embargo, aquellos que me acompañaron amaron el licor, así que si eres fanático no te decepcionará.

Llegué y había una cola, una cola mientras comía y una cola cuando me fui. ¡Muy popular!

In April this year my husband and I visited Manze's Pie Shop. Whilst researching some local historical places we were encouraged to go to the iconic pie shop. The pies are good with massive serves of potato and gravy, the service is quick and friendly and the atmosphere is rather unique. There are no airs and graces about this shop but the fact that it's been there since 1892 is amazing.

Was walking around London and came across this pie shop. It was extremely good value for money and just what we needed to keep us going for the day. Will be returning!

Had pie and mash AND JELLIED EEL! The pie and mash was interesting and looks quite traditional. I did enjoy it. The saltiness of the filling went well with the lightly seasoned potato mash and pea gravy. Jellied eel looked unappetizing but upon tasting, loved it. It was so fresh and did not have a bad smell. The jelly provided a sea-taste and though a weird texture, was very tasty and enjoyable. Quite a walk from the station and quite busy but loved the history behind this place.

Eastenders aside, you go to Manzes for the traditional pie and mash experience rather than the cuisine itself ! I guess the restaurant has changed little in over one hundred years with wooden benches and narrow marble topped tables. The menu was simple offering pie, mash, liquour, and eels. I suspect this restaurant offered a great example of this traditional fare, but to be honest, it's pretty bland food. Probably the starchy offering the workers needed back in the day, but a little dull for the modern diner. Can't fault the value though with a plate full for circa £4. Overall, a great tourist experience if you are in the area !

This venue is full of tradition with the food and atmosphere and location. It is what you expect a Pie and Mash to be, marble top tables, noisy and full of life. The service is at the counter and you order the basic one or two pies and mah and dont forget the eel liquor which makes the meal special.A really great lunch venue.

Excellent food. Swift service and plenty of it. Fast food on a proper plate with a knife and fork. A taste of a old London. Pie and Mash. Yum yum.

Read so many reviews about the famous pie, mash n liquor we had to try it. This places dates back so far it will give you a headache! On arrival we noticed the queue was out of the door. The service is personable with very friendly staff. More like a transport cafe the atmosphere is fabulous. The choice is limited but quantity huge - we had a pie, mash n liquor and also tried the jellied eels- my verdict is - pie amazing, mash how it should be and liquor will grow on me. Jellied eels are an acquired taste that will never have - but I had to try. Loved the visit from start to finish

Went for a Double Double (Double Pie, Double mash and liquor). Have been here several times and it never disappoints. Always quality food and service. A real traditional pie house. Always a 5 Star rating.

This pie and eel house is exactly the same in decor as the first pie and eel house I went to 40 years ago, It has what I would say is a Victorian feel. Food is authentic without any frills. If you want a taste of nostalgia and good tasting British grub, served with a truly London accent, this is the place to go. The stewed eels and mash are fab washed down with a good mug of tea.

Been going here since I could eat solid foods. The food has not changed, it is amazing and a place I always visit when I go home to Bermondsey. You must try this! Make sure you have pie mash and liquor. And try the stewed eels they’re delicious and something you won’t get anywhere else!

If you did try Fish & Chips and looking for another great English dish i would go for a Pie. Maze M is a great place to try this food!

Established in 1902 this business is still a family concern but now overseen by the grandson of Michele Manze and stilll using the same family recipies. You can eat in or take away but I love the atmosphere in these places, its honest down to earth wholesome food.
