Just bought cod and chips from here. Batter was thick and uncooked in places…..inedible! Fish was very thin (probably why they need the thick batter) and chips were nowhere near as good as they used to be. This used to be one of the best chippies around but is now under new ownership and no where near as good. Won’t be using again 😣😣

No Longer Open Now Called Sunnys. Same owners as the new ruined mermaid, same expensive prices and small portions to rip of the people in horncastle and passing by. An example of extortion is £4.50 for a large chips when most places are under £3. Trying to complete with the kebab shop next door and the other one near heron.

Mushy chips overcooked pie disgusting curry sauce which did not taste like curry and peas that tasted weird but on the positive side the fish was tiny and under cooked but at least it was nearly edible We never finished the meal and binned it What a waste of £17.50 Strongly suggest you don’t go there

We called in at Mantles on our way from Lincoln to Skegness and decided to eat in their restaurant. My wife had the last cod so I had haddock and both meals were excellent. The fish was very fresh and well cooked, as was the batter. The regular portion of chips was very generous. Drinks were a tad expensive but the service was excellent.

What has happened to Mantles chip shop ? worst chips we have ever had , soft and greasy barely cooked . We have been going to Mantles chip shop for years and have always enjoyed fish & chips but this has changed , the shop is filthy so God only knows how it has a 4 star hygienic rating ? So glad we only had chips this time as they were only fit for the bin . We will not be going again and can only think that Mantles has been taken over by another owner ?

Out shopping with my 88 year old mum. She fancied fish and chips. As soon as we entered my hackles went up. There were possibly 4 young females'hanging around', sitting on work surfaces near the friers. The restaurant is downstairs and as we walked down them our feet stuck to each step. The restaurant is gloomy and looks like it has stepped out of the 1960s. As we chose a table I pointed out the dirty floor under tables. When the cutlery was brought it was greasy, I had to wash it in the sink in the toilet area!! Cups were brown inside and the tea was cold and disgusting. The fish was 'wet' and tasteless and the chips tasteless and a strange brown colour. Going back up the stairs I noticed that they had the appearance of not having been cleaned in a LONG time and there were ants running around. That meal cost £19.80. I would have complained but my mum doesn't like to make a scene. In my opinion it needs a visit from the health department of the council. Absolutely dire food, surroundings and miserable 'can't be bothered ' staff. I wish I could have marked it zero stars.

Called to get a takeaway, got the food home it was inedible. Greasy, strange smell and taste. Beans were black, peas and curry sauce gross. Had to throw the whole lot in the bin! Went there tonight after a long day moving house, what can I say apart from no matter how hungry you are you wouldn't of eaten our order2 x battered sausage that were pale, cold and slimey. My son recooked them in our oven to make them a little bit crispy. Even that couldn't revive them so in the bin they went2 x chicken nuggets ordered 12 got 11 and the grease on the bags was horrendous. 1 x fish, was just inedible full stop1 x steak and kidney pie with no kidney and dry as a piece of leather. It has obviously been sat in the warmer for hours. I actually managed to see meat once I had chipped off the lid and dug through the burnt crustChips.....there are no words! Solid, cold and very very greasy Curry sauce is closer to the 1980's heinz curried beans than heinz themselves. A monumental achievement Needless to say we can't recommend this food, we wouldn't visit again even if paid and most importantly we won't be eating this food as its all gone in the binMy only regret is having to give them one star because there isn't an option for NO STARS.

Popped in on a visit to Horncastle with my spouse, and had some of the nicest chips I've eaten in a while. Suspect it's the definitely not vegan fat they were cooked in that helped! Portion size for a takeaway was perfect, and their mushy peas were divine (chips & peas on a cold day FTW!). My other half's fish cake was reportedly 'Delicious' - or at least that's what I THOUGHT she said between bites. Highly recommended and worth a visit.

Tea ok, but forget the chocolate, as it’s cheap and nasty and definitely not hot, no latte or as I was told packets of latte. Really disappointed with our experience here and we won’t be returning. Greeted with ‘what do you want frying’ and the customer service didn’t improve from there. Chips were as cold as the atmosphere - friendlier service wouldn’t go amiss. The shop could have been cleaner. Fish had bones in and not alerted to this. Had to return 2 portions of chips as they were greasy cold and rubbery. The curry sauce was tasty and they did refund both portions of chips without hesitation but overall we wouldn’t recommend!

We popped in for lunch (takeaway) when we got our food home we were very shocked to see the miniscule portions, the size of the chips was less than a child's portion and the pot of curry was less than half full. The tiny bit of food we did have was nice but for £13 for 2 large sausages, 2 chips, 1 curry, 1 gravy and a fish cake for our daughter (we normally give her some of our chips but should have got her own portion) it's just not worth it at all. I'll be going to the other chippy from now on. Oh and the curry sauce is revolting fruity, salty overpowering mess. I like traditional chip shop curry.

When our food arrived, the haddock was well done BUT wasn't hot right through which led us to believe that last nights leftover fish had been re-dipped into the oil and was very greasy and tasted stale. Seems to be more and more difficult to get a decent portion of fish and chips these days.Having spent a busy morning wandering round the various antique establishments of Horncastle recently, we were looking for somewhere to recharge our batteries. Not fancying pub grub this time, and due to the weather being unseasonably good, we opted for the local fish and chips. The wait for fish to be cooked especially is always a good sign, and we were not disappointed here. The fish was a sizeable portion, with great crunchy batter.Along with the nice chunky 'proper' chips, this turned out to be the best portion of fish and chips i have had for ages. The staff were also very friendly and chatty, despite the shop being constantly busy while we were there.Overall, this was a great example of what fish and chips should taste like, better than some of the seaside offerings we've experienced!!Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

There were a few people in the restaurant but still plenty of room. You can still see the old gas mantles and pipes on the walls hence the name Mantles.

Popped in for a fish and chip takeaway when we saw the queue. To us this is the sign of a good chippie. We were not disappointed. Freshly cooked and good size portions. Yummy

A popular friendly Fish and chip shop and restaurant on Horncastle market place. We rarely have the take away, usually we eat in the Restaurant. The restaurant in down stairs in the basement. It is always the highest standard in all aspects, friendly staff good food and good value. The old gas lamps on the walls (display only) add character with exposed brick work. Only ever had one minor grumble some months ago, possibly longer, the prices were altered and the menus were not, so I ended up scraping together loose change to pay the bill which had obviously gone up from what I was used to paying. It is still in my opinion good value and I still enjoy eating there!Well worth a visit !

We asked for lightly battered cod -the fish was very thin and served with skin on - my fish ended up being mostly batter and skin - yucky! The take-out area has definitely seen better days - it needs a good clean up - the whole place felt greasy and unkempt. Quality of fish and chips was infinitely better from the Mermaid chip shop and I'd go there next time and give Mantles a wide swerve.

I use this chippy quite regularly and as a measure of the quality food is that there is nearly always a queue, but they serve very efficiently and soon get to you, order specials from the door (Cod, Nuggets etc.)

Food is cooked to order and very good quality. We ate in the cellar restaurant which can feel a little oppressive when full but the food is excellent as is the service. My only complaint is that there were far too many chips!

Lovely little fish and chip take away. The chips are sometimes a little soggy which isn't to my liking but they do the best chicken nuggets I've ever had.

Didn't eat in today (have in the past), so just chips and curry sauce and chips and peas on trays to eat out in the sunshine today. When I first saw the curry sauce, I thought they'd got it mixed up with the gravy as it's very dark - however it turned out to be the nicest curry sauce I'd ever had - dark in colour but very fruity in flavour with lots of sultana's in it. The peas were a nice healthy colour as well - not the day glo green you often see these days.

Second visit to Mantles and as the weather was not great for August decided to have our meal in the cellar restaurant. Great service and fish and chips up to their usual high standard. We had to have one of the mushy pea fritters as well. Good service and had a bottle of wine with the meal too.

Thoroughly enjoyed the tasty fish and chips in the restaurant. The service was quick and food was fresh and hot. The only problem we found was that , as the restaurant is downstairs it got very hot as the tables filled up with people and the delicious food was brought out. There didnt seem to be any air con. However this has not put us off and we will definitley be going again

Haddock chips & mushy peas has never tasted so good , I knew I was in for a treat as there was a queue, always a good sign, but the flavours & the freshness delivered a really good dish!

Visit to the seaside wanted fish and chips, as I'm gluten free I usually struggle. Not here have gluten free on the menu, also curry sauce. We both had regular fish and chips, mine was wrapped separately from husbands as he had normal.Great portions glad we didn't go for the large.

We went specifically to this venue for breakfast. We ordered different breakfasts and made some changes to one of them with the helpful counter staff. The tea in the tea pot was cold and we took it back for a replacement hot tea pot. The breakfast was brought to us by a member of staff who did not smile or speak. Having ordered extra well done bacon we were surprised to note that it certainly hadn't been even well done. The plates were cold and so was half of the breakfast, the rest of it cooling rapidly. The toast and prepacked butter were placed on the top of the breakfast and we had to use our fingers to try and get them off the top, even though there was nowhere to put them (have they never heard of side plates)? All in all, very poor. Customer care is clearly not a priority.

Can't begin to say how bad this pub was, miserable landlady and landlord and the worst food I have ever not eaten. I say not eaten as we didn't get through even a quarter of the plate of awful food we were offered. My husband said the beer was okay but please don't bother with the food it REALLY ISNT WORTH IT.

Had a couple of roasts today which came with free desserts. Meal was lovely, fresh, hot, just what you expect. We was really happy with that.....but....half an hour after leaving we realised we had left a bag behind. Money, cards, car keys, medication, all stuff hard to replace when on holiday. We returned to the Windsor and the lady who was serving, cleaning etc said she saw the bag as soon as we left, so put it safe behind the counter. Panic over. We can't thank you enough xxx
