Manjal Indian Restaurant in Tower Hamlets

I came at 9:23 PM and the waiter told me that there are no dining requests inside the restaurant 👎🏼 at the time of closing at Google Map 11:00 PM !!

We tried this restaurant by chance during a family trip to London. The food is delicious, and the waiters are very pleasant and helpful. The setting is a bit unusual for an Indian restaurant, but charming. And all of this is in a neighborhood worth exploring.

I always enjoy coming to this restaurant. The food is genuinely Indian and delicious. If you are looking for a restaurant that hasn't been moderated for the English palate, this is certainly the place. Yes it's pricier than a number of other places but it was worth it. I will say it's pretty tucked away a short walk from Canary wharf and the view outside is currently an ugly yacht, but that's not the restaurant's fault and to be honest who cares, as long as the food is good.

Disappointing Dine-In Experience Despite Good Food I’ve enjoyed ordering from this place several times via Deliveroo, so I decided to try dining in. The restaurant is in a lovely dockside location overlooking Canary Wharf, but unfortunately, the indoor setup doesn’t really take advantage of the view. The main dining area is on the first floor, above an Italian restaurant. We ordered lamb and chicken biryanis. While the portions felt smaller than what we usually receive via delivery, the food itself was consistent and flavorful. Unfortunately, the dine-in experience was marred by the service. The music was uncomfortably loud, which made it difficult to have a conversation. When I politely asked if it could be turned down, the waiter (Johnny – bearded, with a man bun) responded with clear disinterest and a dismissive attitude. My request was brushed off, and when I asked for a different table — given the restaurant was mostly empty — that too was ignored. When I brought it up again, Johnny seemed visibly irritated. He sarcastically asked me to “listen to the sound” and pointed to the ceiling, seemingly unaware that the only difference was a change in the track, not the volume. I approached the ground-floor staff in hopes of some support. While they were polite, they didn’t take any real action. When I returned, Johnny appeared even more agitated, questioning why I had spoken to the downstairs team. His tone and behavior were inappropriate and unprofessional. What left a lasting impression — beyond just poor service — was the feeling that my presence and polite requests were unwelcome. I can’t help but feel that my ethnicity may have played a role in how I was treated. At one point, while I was trying to explain the situation to a female staff member, Johnny seemed intent on interrupting and dismissing the conversation entirely, as if he had a problem with both my request and the fact that a woman was engaging in the conversation. All in all, I spent £60 for a meal that left me more frustrated than satisfied. I love good food and vibrant music, but I also value being treated with respect when dining out. It’s a shame — this place had potential to become a regular spot for me, but after this experience, I won’t be returning. Looking at other reviews, I see I’m not alone in this type of experience. While they may be the minority, they’re consistent enough to suggest that customer service here needs serious improvement.

There were very minimal chicken pieces, and the okra was packed with onion - which is not the usual standard from here

After believing the decent reviews on Google, Ordered the lamb biryani on Deliveroo. I don’t know who had the guts to name it a “Biryani”, it was rice, overcooked meat and an unnecessary spicefest. My stomach needs a fire extinguisher now!

If you want an authentic Indian food experience, this is it. This was one of the best curries I've had. Reasonably priced and the food is just so good.

Manjal restaurant has the best food but in regards to service there is one particular person who wears hairband and has an attitude problem, not sure if it’s because he don’t likes his job and or it’s his overall behaviour, was so rude and kept making faces and being rude… I am in awe with restaurants authenticity of food but maybe try training the existing people or maybe replace him. This is the second time I have come across the same lad with this issue.

I ordered pick up on uber eats and the restaurant was completely empty. I go to the desk upstairs to get my food and they take me to the back to the basement downstairs which looked completely unprofessional and run down. If im a customer picking up my food why am I being taken where the delivery drivers gather the food. I’m assuming they thought I was working for uber eats . Completely poor customer service and made me uncomfortable to be a woman taken to the basement to get my food. I will not be coming back despite sitting down and eating here multiple times and leaving a decent tip.

Food is good but be warned mains arrive in stingy small bowls so you're paying a lot for what it is - especially for lentils and veg dishes.

Hidden gem in canary wharf and much better than other highly rated Indian food places like Dishoom in canary wharf. Have been there a few times now and all the items be it north or south indian, authentic and yummy. Reasonable pricing too.

I have been to such a friendly restaurant. The staff go out of their way to help and the food it out of this world. A beautiful location too so a definite 5 stars all round from me.

Very poor - ordered via deliveroo & the two portions of pilau rice came as plain rice which was underwhelming. The korma was watery & flavourless. Expected better from the reviews. Wont be ordering again.

We recently had our team lunch at Manjal and it was a hit! The food was fantastic - fresh, flavourful and with plenty of vegetarian and non veg options to please everyone. The service and staff was friendly and efficient, even with our large group. A great atmosphere for a team lunch, and the prices and portions were as expected. We'll definitely be back!

Such flavoursome food. Every dish from starters to mains to dessert was bangin. Fantastic Zombie cocktails too! The service is great and there's parking. This was our fourth visit even though we live an hour's drive away, Mangal has always been well worth the journey. We'd definitely recommend.

This is a great place to visit for a chilled evening out with friends or family.Relaxed time. The food choice is great, and the staff is attentive and comes and checks to make sure all is good. Also, the food test is too good and the restaurant atmosphere looks nice.

October 2024: Ordered on deliveroo. Absolutely disaster food. Poor packing. Dosa was packed in silver foil - terrible. Potato tikki was hard. no flavour. Stale food. (See pictures) Veg fried rice was bland. Gobhi Manchurian was sweet. onion rawa masala dosa was average. Would not recommend or order again

We visited this restaurant yesterday for the first time. The starters were great as well the main. They also had a special meal for the upcoming release for Vettaiyan, where it was a thaali with a variety of selections (limited time only). Staff were really welcoming and friendly especially Venkat and Shaqil. The overall experience was really good.

Visited Manjal for my birthday, chosen by my daughter, and what a great find it was. Location in Canary Wharf, right next to the river. The restaurant itself was clean, and the staff greeted us very courteously and were very polite and attentive to our needs. Food was tasty and presented beautifully. Overall, it was a great evening meal and worth the trip. Even surprised me with a little birthday cake

It was really excellent, the starters as well as the main courses. The service is also impeccable. I highly recommend this restaurant, you will not be disappointed. Special mention for the cat samosa and the dish with jalfrezi sauce

Ordered Biryani and dosa via Deliveroo. The biryani looked nothing like biryani. I have been eating/cooking Biryani all my life and let me tell, any chicken and rice is NOT biryani. The worst part is I had an upset stomach after eating it. I would avoid this restaurant at all costs.

perfect, this atmosphere was quite load but a lovely calm place at the same time, the set up and tables along with being able to see the water from where we were seated was a lovely extra for our meal, the lights and music made the place feel classy and fancy which is a nice add to the meal. the food was delivered only 10 minutes after ordering which was amazing as me and my partner were starving, we ordered the chicken tikka along with rice and plain nann bread, the chicken tikka had a spicy kick but was overall one of the best i have ever had along with the fluffy nann bread, as we tried to order chips but they didn’t sell them the lovely waiter suggested a substitute which was amazing and i’m glad they didn’t do chips. the service overall really made the place more homely, the waiter we had spoke to us a lot and was very lively, he suggested new foods to us and was very intrested in our travels, which was a lovely conversation to have, although i have so much good to say about this place i must say it is very expensive around 70-80 which isn’t to bad to pay when the food is worth it, if your willing to pay this then decently visit this place in the london area

Forget Dishoom, this is without doubt the best Indian and Sri Lankan food in Canary Wharf. Everything we had was cooked to perfection, from the onion bhajis to the fish curry, chicken biriyani and jalfrezi. The service was extremely welcoming and friendly, with helpful suggestions made regarding which curries to have with which breads. To cap it all you have a great view of the docks at South Quay in a bright, clean and comfortable restaurant. Can't recommend this place more highly, and will definitely be coming back.

This restaurant is a 10/10. The location is wonderful and verz pretty. The food was amazing especially their Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala. The Service was a 10/10 as well. They were super friendly and helpful. The ambiente… I first thought this is a 5 star restaurant to be honest it is sooo pretty and classy. The prices are super reasonable as well. I really recommend this place.

Tried GC, DR before visiting here, but this is the best. It’s recommended by a friend who came from India. The food tastes so delicious, chicken chetinad and kothru roti are my favorites. The service was great as well. My partner ordered a half pint of beer. The waiter brought a pint, then the manager removed the beer from the bill.

If you’re looking for delicious Sri Lankan and South Indian food, this is the place for you. The garlic prawns, lamb varuval and Himalayan wings are a must try for starters. And we enjoyed the mutton kottu roti, upcountry chicken curry with Malabar parathas for our mains. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable! The staff are so friendly and really go the extra mile to make you feel welcome.

Had the saag Paneer and butter naan. I couldn't fault the food, it was delicious! Service was friendly and attentive. I received my food quickly but not alarmingly quick! The restaurant had brilliant views of canary wharf and the river. I went for a midweek dinner so it was a little quiet, I'm sure the atmosphere is better on a busy weekend night

The staff are really friendly... Excellent parking is available with lots of spaces... Easily accessible location.. Prize is also good.. Not much expensive.. Very accessible location..

Good fusion of food and Indian flavours

I wouldn't recommend this place, if you are looking for Authentic Indian food and flavours. We had Chilli Paneer for starters, Daal Makhani, Chicken Tikka for mains and none of the dishes actually tasted great. What struck me the most is super small portion sizes, and how expensive this place is. Credit where credit is due: The staff is nice and the ambience is great.

The butter chicken and the korma were very sugary I just lost my appetite when I tasted them like I was eating sweets…that’s absolutely not the way those type of foods should be cooked! The sugar content just took over the overall taste to the point I couldn’t identify what spices were used alongside…the madras borotha texture was great BUT again it was sweet also!!! Guys you really love to use sugar in the kitchen don’t you? Frankly I hate sugar and that is precisely why I won’t order anything from you again. Cheers

Dining at Manjal restaurant was an unforgettable experience with stunning waterfront views and a breathtaking skyline backdrop. The exceptional service, particularly from Alan, who kept us entertained with his jokes, made us feel right at home. The food was amazing, especially the perfectly baked garlic naan and authentic Indian chicken curry and lamb dishes, making Manjal a gem worth visiting again.

Food is below average for London standards. Service is abysmal. Was served by someone called Johnie ( I hope that is his name ).. he was downright rude .. food for kids ( plain dosa and curd rice took more than an hour and the place was not even half full.. apparently the place is run by some heavy handed people and the service is showing.. it feels like you pay a premium to get treated like a beggar on the road… Please avoid and choose any other India restaurant.. Grand Cholan down the road is way better…

Get the butter chicken! Fantastic food, great service. Did I mention the butter chicken was out of this world? Lovely view by the waterway and restaurant was manned by very attentive and friendly staff. And you must order the butter chicken.

I cannot recommend this place enough! Absolute go to for dinner, lunch and breakfast if I could. I mix it up, sometimes ordering spicier dishes but also really love the korma. The Bombay aloo is incredible, perfect blend of spices and heat. If you are looking for authentic very well cooked dishes this is the place. Atmosphere is good and the service staff are very friendly and welcoming. Dish to recommend would be chicken devil on the starters, and the garlic naan. Absolute delish

We came on a Monday for dinner and the experience was great. We ordered mutton rolls, lamb kotthu rotti, chicken briyani and chicken curry (£60 incl lemonade drink, water and service charge). The service was impeccable, the staff was very kind and professional and a great view. In addition, the food was authentic and nice.

Me and my partner found this little gem of an Indian restaurant whilst out on a stroll looking for somewhere to have our evening meal. What a beautiful little place, the staff who seen to us were both polite and acknowledgable of all customers present. The atmosphere has been beautiful and peaceful with music playing in the background and just the right level so you can still hold a conversation. Nothing was too much to ask for. Staff showed continued acknowledgement and making sure you were OK and that you were happy with each dish you had. The food was outstanding! Very flavoursome and plenty of it! We look forward to visiting this establishment again! Everything was just absolutely perfect!
