Mandarin in Guildford

We had set menu B and there was so much food we couldn’t eat it all, but it was all prepared so beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch.

We haven’t been to the Mandarin for quite a long time and decided to get a take away meal last night . It was absolutely first class in every way . The food was excellent and the service was amazing . The meal was ready to collect in 15 minutes and was well wrapped in nice containers and piping hot . Thanks very much We will certainly be using you in the future

Guildford is served very well by family run restaurants and the Mandarin is without doubt our go-to Chinese place. The menu is wide-ranging and the service has always been friendly and professional. There has never been a meal on our table which falls short of expectations. The wine list is very good if you want a bottle. By the glass the choice is limited to the usual options. It seems to have a strong following, so do book ahead on busy evenings. Some reviewers have been unhappy about the portion sizes. If you want fast food style, stomach-stretching portions, the Mandarin is not for you. If you want a chance to try a few dishes for variety, you should walk out very happy. (The crispy duck is great.) We'll be going back soon.

Outstanding Chinese restaurant, the best in Guildford and in the wider area. We have been going to the Mandarin for over 20 years now and have always enjoyed the service, the food and is good value for money. A real gem in Guildford.

Having visited first 1971, and then not for a long time and being a lover of Chinese food, this was the best Chinese restaurant I have been to in many years. We're now starting to go there regularly - which is new for us, we don;'t go out that much and don't frequent one place or style of food... but now we are. Just superb food, beautifully cooked and with such fresh ingredients and freshly cooked. Clean and beautiful flavours.

Everything tastes amazing. I can't get enough of it. It's definitely my favourite chinese restaurant in UK so far. I like to order the entire starter menu and then a selection of rice and noodle mains with wonton soup. It's a lovely quiet, clean and well presented restaurant with friendly staff and management. I will be going back again soon and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Absolutely the best Chinese meal I've eaten. Everyone friendly . Food was served hot and soòò tasty. Recommend the grilled pork dumplings and beef with ginger .

Food is excellent quality and definitely one of the healthiest Chinese restaurants around. I will agree with other reviewers the portions are slightly small. However the quality is fantastic!

Out of the blue we decided to celebrate my birthday here, don't know why, but hadn't been in years, in fact since I went with my parents in 1971! Had a great meal, and have since been back, and looks like this will become a regular thing as we just love the food.

I ate at this restaurant this evening. I was the only customer and it soon became apparent why. I ordered two courses, both came in record time. The starter was ok, the chicken chow mein I had for the main course was the smallest plate of food I have ever had served to me. Nobody asked if the food was ok and the attitude of both waiting staff was abrupt. I was there for no more than 20 minutes. When the bill came I asked for the 10% discretionary service charge to be taken off the bill. I was told this was made very clear in the menu. I pointed out that it was also very clear that the charge was discretionary and demanded it be removed. The guy's attitude was appalling, he didn't even ask what the issue was! If you are looking for small portions of very over priced, mediocre food then you might like this place. If not give the place a very wide berth and find a decent Chinese restaurant instead.

The whole experience was wonderful and is always been great for the 5 plus years my wife and I have eaten at the Restaurant. The food is always great the owners and staff are first class so helpful and the service is top class. It is so popular that you get to know the regulars for a good chat. By far the best Chinese in Guildford. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious. Nice to support a small independent family run restaurant that’s been running in Guildford for years!

We were impressed by the quality of the food and the very friendly service. The restaurant wasn’t too busy which it deserves to be although they seemed to be doing a good trade in takeaway orders. Will happily visit again when we are in the area.

Superb food - not your usual 'run of the mill' soggy, greasy dishes (although the premises are very much what you'd expect & pretty plain). Tastes really fresh & made with good quality ingredients. The satay chicken was excellent & made of lovely chicken breast, as well as the chilli squid which was cooked just right (not overcooked & rubbery). Overall - not cheap, but worth the cost.

Came to the Mandarin for a meal prior to seeing a show at G Live. We had to ask ourselves why there were so few people in there given how busy the other restaurants in the area were. We were even more surprised given how friendly the staff and owner were and how good the food was. Would highly recommend giving it a try if you like Chinese cuisine. We will definitely be going there again.

First takeaway we had from the mandarin and it was by far the best take out. The beef and chicken was delicious.

We used to live locally and get take-out from here many years ago. We returned for a sit down meal with the family this week and am very happy to say the place is still amazing. Staff and management are super friendly, came over to speak to us and recognised us from years back. The food was fresh and wonderful as always and we were very happy to share it with the family. Still our favourite Chinese Restaurant in Guildford. Hidden gem at the top of the high street!

Went to the Mandarin early on a Saturday evening. The food was exquisite , the staff were both friendly and very efficient. It was my first visit but I shall make the effort to return when I am Guildford again. In conclusion. It was fantastic and would throughly recommend the Mandarin to others. Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Had dinner at the Mandarin as part of a weekend trip. Was not disappointed. Food was fantastic , portion sizes were generous. Staff were friendly and efficient. All in all was not disappointed and would recommend to others.

We met family half way between each other and settled on Guildford… and Chinese. The service and food was fabulous!! The mixed starters came with at least two of each for each person. The spring rolls were pretty standard and mostly full of air, but the rest made up for it! The chow mien was some of the best I’ve ever had. The meat dishes were generous and tender. We were the only ones in there at lunch time… but then they’ve only just reopened too!!

We’ve just enjoyed another lovely Chinese meal at the only Chinese restaurant we ever go to! We’ve been coming here for 17 years and Always had the same food every time as it’s so good! Lovely family run business and service is always exceptional thank you! Jeremy and Holly

The restaurant looked well appointed, but I found the dishes to be over-overpriced and of varying quality. Unfortunately, we found the two beef dishes to be inedible. The shredded beef was just a mountain of orange cornflower, with the flat sweet taste of crispy carbs. The sizzling beef came in thick chewy slices, so we could not eat it. It was too rubbery. The starters, duck and vegetable dishes were nice and portions quite generous. We should have really returned everything at the earliest possible time, because we were given no leeway on the price, nor on the 'obligatory' tip, at the end of the meal. The staff were nice, the manager however, was not so generous about our complaint.

We came here for an early dinner. Restaurant had just opened, so it was empty when we arrived, but full by the time we left. Food quality was good, but the portions were noticeably small. Five of us each ordered a soup and a main dish, but left feeling still a bit peckish. Service was prompt and courteous. Just a minor qualm regarding drinks - When ordering a bottle of beer, the bottle should be presented on the table and offered to the customer, not just poured in a glass without the customer seeing the bottle. It was also unusual that staff did not say "goodbye" when we left.

Spent 30.00 on a takeaway for 1 tonight. Crispy dim sum was so overcooked. Prawn and chicken dish had no veg at all just I sauce over the dish. Rice was OK. Have eaten here in the past but this was just a rip off. I know you was closing but this was rubbish. I suggest the owners contact me. Richard.sherlock@tiscali.co.uk. My daughter & myself have been coming here for 16 years (she’s now 21)! We always have the same items to eat and every time we visit the food is as good and the same as the last time! I don’t know how they achieve this so consistently? Service is always excellent and you never have to wait long for your food. Complete utter rip-off. Dishes were small and too sweet. For example, the seafood hotpot for £15 contained 3 prawns, 3 thin slices of scallop, 2 slithers of squid and a lot of onion (see pic). All the mains were served on small entrée plates. There was nothing at all authentic about this so called Chinese Restaurant.

Easily the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to, across multiple countries. Wonderful owners who are kind and gracious. Highly recommend the Chiu Yim spare ribs for the best spare ribs you'll ever eat. The crispy smoked chicken is also amazing!

Just wow ! My partner and I called in for dinner and we were actually quite blown away. Everything came out quick, sizzling and super fresh. Nice wine and beer selection too. The crispy chilli beef was some of the best I’ve ever had and the mixed chicken, king prawn and beef black bean sizzling dish was superb (my partner finished off the sauce with the spoon).The staff were super lovely and could not do enough for us. We had a great chat with our fantastic waiter. The vibe is genuine, real, no BS and family friendly. We’ll be back. Thanks guys !

I’ve always thought The Mandarin had incredible food. There are many Chinese restaurants closer to me, but I always drive to The Mandarin whenever I get a takeaway! I recently went in for a meal with my sister and the customer service didn’t disappoint. I had previously been a few years back for a birthday and that’s when I knew it would be my favourite choice for a Chinese! Such lovely waiters and waitresses, really welcoming, food came out quickly and just very kind. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!

My husband and I had eaten her a few years back prior to a concert at G Live and decided to give it another try a couple of weeks ago. We were not disappointed. Very friendly staff and excellent food. We decided to have a set meal as we were in a bit of a hurry - again going to a concert and were delighted with the meal. The staff asked if we needed to finish by a certain time and did all they could to serve us quickly but we didn’t feel rushed. We will certainly go back again when next in Guildford.

Service good, but the menu range boring (like most UK Chinese restaurants). Far from authentic. Small portions, so not good value for money. Nothing special.

Been here for special occasions and for take away over many years. Never disappoints. The staff are always lovely, friendly, attentive. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. It's a family run business and you can really tell. Food is always delicious, well cooked and beautifully presented. It's our go to place for all our family occasions.

As always another wonderful meal that all the family enjoyed.

I have given this restauran 5 stars as this is by far the better Chinese out of all the ones I've tried personally ,a best choice by far for at least an 8 mile radius ( I live that far from it and it's well worth the journey ,authentic taste and full of flavour and content a definite massive thumbs up from me !!

What can I say, food was a 8. Staff not excatly welcoming, went on a quiet night so, there was one couple leaving and one couple eating, so they not rushed off there feet, unyet service for a drink was still slow.

We were a family of six dining out on a Saturday night. The staff were welcoming and very accommodating in allowing us to choose the ideal table for our family get together. Service was attentive but we never felt rushed, which was really appreciated. We had a range of starters from the hot and sour soup to spare ribs and spring rolls which were all delicious. The mains were also good especially the duck pancakes, crispy beef, prawn and cashews and several noodle and rice dish options. Fortune cookies to finish!

I've eaten here a few times now and the food has always been excellent, the best Chinese in Guildford by far! Recently got a takeaway and the standards are just as high, I'm very impressed. The staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the price is very reasonable.

This is a family run business, and the owners are very friendly and warm. Quality of food is excellent and service is quick. The price is slightly higher but considering the quality, it is worth for the price.

I went quite late on a Wednesday evening, so there were only 2 other diners.. which I enjoyed with the staff being polite and attentive. The food was quick to the table, well cooked with amazing flavour.. I can see why they were busy with takeaway order, if I lived locally I would order from or eat there all the time..

Highly recommended, try the crispy smoked chicken and you will know what I mean.

My wife and i visited the Mandarin prior to watching a show at G-live and had a pleasant all round experience service was fast and menu covered all tastes with well cooked meals.

We ate here again last night and have been doing so since my daughter was 6. She’s now 17! We are pretty boring with our choice of dishes whenever we visit, always having the same food every time. But it’s always tastes as good as the last time. We sometimes have a takeaway and there is no difference with the food. The owner is a great guy and his staff who are mostly family and great. The restaurant is spotless. We highly recommended this restaurant!
