Mamma Mia in Medway

Warm and friendly welcome, excellent service and a wonderful Italian meal. We enjoyed all the courses but the Arancini was spectacularly good! Highly recommend. The experience was only slightly marred by an extremely unpleasant single, male customer who, having consumed his lunch, tried interminably to lie his way out of paying for it. The staff dealt with him with endless patience, courtesy and professionalism and were subsequently warmly congratulated by all the other customers for the way in which they dealt with the matter. We would certainly visit again if we are back in Rochester at any time.

What a delightful find! A lovely Italian restaurant positioned near the river, castle and cathedral in Rochester - in other words, a good location. The food was uniformly excellent. I especially enjoyed the mushroom ravioli, but also took the opportunity to steal some of my daughter's penne alla boscaiola, which was similarly delicious. Staff were attentive and helpful throughout. I'll be heading back, that's for sure. If I had one tiny quibble, it is purely that the lighting could be just a little dimmer - just to make it more cosy, and even more enjoyable experience. But everything else? Just right!

Food amazing. Ate at lunchtime which had a 3pm closing time,and they mean it! We were hurried out and made to feel like we were a inconvenience. So book early for a relaxed lunch

This is an unpretentious restaurant - decor is nothing to write home about but the food was excellent and good value. It got busy quite quickly on the evening we visited.

Ok, but taste of Lasagne was bitter, very different to how it used to be. Has the recipe for the Lasagne changed?

Fantastic restaurant. Great food and great staff. Really friendly place. They didn't have a table available but took our number and called us when one became available. Top service I had the Mama Mia pizza and a Monte Cassino beer. Very happy with them. I definitely recommend this place.

We ordered desserts. Tiramisu was absolutely tasteless. It's a complete disappointment, but Lidl tiramisu is much tastier. Of the tea assortment, there was only PG. Seriously? the cheapest supermarket tea? but the bag was put in a beautiful teapot. The waiters had to be called several times. It is unlikely that we will come here again.

Asked a couple of ladies just on the high street if they could recommend somewhere to eat and they said 'Mama Mia' . So husband and I went to said eaterie and it was welcoming lovely ambient place and we set out to choose our food ! Some Italian restaurants tend to all have the same taste but wow not this family run establishment ! I ordered the special (basically a seafood linguine but they called it a regu) Husband had The Penne Mama Mia which he loved . Also a garlic bread and for once not ripped off with the price of wine . A carafe 500ml of house red £12.50 Happy days !!! Husband had a lovely Italian beer bit pricier at £8.50 but loved it . The flavours were just lovely in our dishes and the family run touch shone through ! A good shout to those two lovely ladies that steered us to Mama Mia a jewel in the High Streets Crown indeed. Grazie !!

A lovely friendly restaurant situated in the highstreet of Rochester. He has a few tables outside and more inside. Very helpful and friendly staff. If you are not sure of what something is, they are happy to explain in detail not only what it is but how it is cooked of which I found very helpful. Italian food menu and cooked to perfection. And a lovely dessert menu. A choice of wines the staff are happy to recommend one for you to try. Excellent evening, definitely will be visiting again.

Pizza was fantastic. So was my white bait starter. What I didn't like was paying £5, getting short changed because they didn't have the money, for 8 olives. Also specifically asking how long to wait on the phone to then be made to wait twice aslong as specified. They weren't great either. Soft and mushy. Average

Had the beef Ragu special and my girlfriend had the pesto risotto. Both were incredible!! Proper Italian food. I would go back again in a heartbeat

Visited this restaurant for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Received a warm friendly welcome and the lady explained the specials to us. The restaurant is traditional but thankfully steers away from the the obligatory gingham tablecloths and candles in bottles. Service is smooth but not in your face. The menu is varied with a couple of choices i have never seen before.I chose the specials of the day which was a frittata type dish fried in breadcrumbs served with cheese sauce and a seafood ravioli both were delicious.All the food was served hot and well presented .The wine was very good. We had such a good time they had to ask us to leave at 3pm as they were closing and the lady needed to collect her children from school.Highly recommended and will return again to sample more from the menu

Olives brought to table, thought they were complimentary, but was charged £4.75. Service also charged, with an option to delete, after the event. Ordered lamb, not impressed with quality or flavour, accompanying veg etc minimal. Salmon dish, accompanying veg etc again minimal. Overall expensive for quality and quantity. Would not rush back.

My friend and I popped in on the off chance today, wonderful food and staff were lovely, highly recommend. Wasn't busy but that was lovely as we could chat over a bottle of wine and didn't feel rushed

This is a wonderful Italian restaurant with all the care, attention to detail and flavour that you would want from an independent restaurant. They are very accommodating. I would certainly recommend. The only small issue (which did not detract from the experience), was that the image of the banoffee pie on the menu does not reflect what it served.

Lovely friendly restaurant with a great menu.

Five of us were there for a birthday dinner, 2 of the party are Vegetarian. From the moment we were greeted, throughout the meal, and as we left we were welcomed and looked after with care. The staff didn't know it was a special meal for us, clearly this is their standard level of excellent service. The food was simply delicious and fulfilling. Cooked, presented and delivered with obvious care and pride. It was a deliciously lovely meal, all of it. We all had something different, and all of us felt exactly the same. Food to die for. I really cannot recommend this place highly enough. I can say without exaggeration, it really is that good! We definitely will be using Mamma Mia again when in the area. Thank you team. You all did brilliantly.

After being turned away from eating inside by Cafe Nucleus Rochester because I was a solo diner I had lunch at this fabulous traditional family run trattoria Italian restaurant just a few metres on Rochester High Street. You will get a genuinely warm welcome from the staff here who go out of their way to make your visit special, I wasn’t surprised that whilst I was there the phone was ringing constantly for dinner & lunch bookings. The chef is from southern Italy according to his wife, my server, so I tried their carnivore Naples pizza. This guy really knows how to make a pizza, it was fantastic, thin, light, very crisp not at all soggy or doughy & packed with flavour. I’m not keen on chicken on pizza so the staff said it was no problem to take it off & replace it with something else ( I chose red onion & peppers). The desserts are home made every day, I opted for a baked vanilla cheesecake it really didn’t need the strawberry coulis it was great on its own. There are some excellent rich red wines to accompany your meal. First class restaurant

Had a fabulous meal here on Sunday lunchtime Food was superb, service was attentive, but not intrusive, would thoroughly recommend.

Service appaling. We booked a table for 9 only to be told when we eventually were allowed to order that food ( two simple pasta dishes would take 45 to 50 minutes) were made to feel like criminals for deciding to leave. Food no idea as they could not be bothered to cook for us within a reasonable time. Atmopshere was like a loud drunken canteen which if you are loud and drunk i suppose might be acceptable. Price . Overpriced Overall impression unless you are a large group who are going to spend out on all three courses, drink loads and not expect them to serve within the hour they will not make you welcome, which is ok as we will not be returning.

We took our friends there yesterday for lunch. Our friends had never been there before and they love Italian food. We had a lovely time there the food was very good, 3 of us went with the lamb ragu as when the waitress was describing it we all decided it sound so lovely we wanted to try it, it didn't disappoint. The waitress was very attentive and informative. We all had a lovely time there we will definitely go back. We had a bottle of house red which was a very good choice too.

Came here with a few friends for dinner and absolutely loved it! The restaurant is small and cozy but has a nice atmosphere which makes it! The staff are very friendly and welcoming and they clearly care what people think and want the best for the customers, the owner encouraged us to taste the specials and they were definitely worth it! The food was brilliantly presented, the portions were perfect and they were extremely tasty and cooked brilliantly! Parking can be hard, best place to park would be the Esplanade!

We ordered our water and Tea, as we wasn't drinking alcohol, had our main meal - it was ok not very Hot, maybe if we had alcohol it would have tasted better. The noise levels were unbelievable i would have thought that something would have been done about that! You think you go out for a romantic meal and you can not hear yourself. Will not return.

Waiting for more than an hour, when the restaurant confirmed it will be delivered in time when I called them ( 10mins after ordering) not sure what happened. Pizza was cold which is a shame. Spoiled the excitement of 3yr old boy that has a bad flu.

Nice Italian restaurant, fairly small which is great as dining here is a more personable experience than larger chain restaurants.

I booked a table having read in reviews about Rochester restaurants that it's wise to do so. The three of us went on a Friday evening. The place did get pretty crowded so I was glad I'd booked. The restaurant is nice inside, didn't notice any smells as another recent reviewer said. I liked the mural on the wall. All the waiting staff were friendly. The manager even offered to take a couple of photos for us. The atmosphere was convivial. The manager asked everyone to join in when he brought out a birthday cake and the whole restaurant sang Happy Birthday. Service was a little slow but we didn't mind as we were chatting and could see the restaurant was busy. And we did appreciate not being chivvied along to finish. We shared an appetiser of Garlic Bread - pizza dough - which was nice. Our first courses were delicious. My friends had Salmone ai Porcini. They especially liked that the salmon wasn't swamped in sauce. I had a special - homemade ravioli with mushroom and sausage. Our first courses were so good we were really looking forward to our desserts. One friend had Banoffi Pie which was served in a glass dish. My sister and I had cheesecake with a fruit coulis. Sadly, we were all a little disappointed with the desserts. They were okay but we were expecting something outstanding after the first course. While chatting to the waitress, we discovered that they normally have 2 sittings, 6:30 and 8:30. However, due to one of the chefs having just had an operation, they were only doing one sitting. So, that explained the relaxed attitude. I'd definitely be happy to go back there again. I think another time, I'd have a starter rather than a dessert. And definitely remember to book a table!

This has been our favourite Italian restaurant for a long time and we have enjoyed many occasions and celebrations here. However, on this occasion we were surprised on arrival to see that the restaurant was not as busy as usual. We ordered 4 starters including whitebait at £7.00. Rather than the tasty, generous and well cooked dish we are used to, we got 7 small, overcooked pieces of fish. The small bottles of Italian lager were overpriced at £4.50. The restaurant looked tired and smelled rather fusty and damp. We missed our usual Maitre’d who was not there. Is this the decline of what was once a lovely dining experience?

Excellent food, what I would call proper Italian. Everyone enjoyed what they had. They do a £10 kids menu which includes a drink, main and ice cream. Service was brilliant, highly recommend.

Food great and best Italian in Rochester, atmosphere lovely but this was all overshadowed by terrible service on both of my visits. The waitress with the brown hair was horrible and barely served us, we had to call her numerous times for service. I don’t recommend this place at all.

From the beginning they treated us bad and they were racist towards my fiancé. Also food was subpar, I ordered spaghetti bolognese and there was no meat inside.

This was a lesson in good service. If I was to open a restaurant i would send my staff here for a meal so they can see how to greet people, make young children feel comfortable and how to create a good atmosphere. I cant rate them highly enough, they set the scene for a great Sunday lunch well needed after a morning of viewing tourist attractions. Pizza was tasty and the garlic bread very very tasty. Great value.

been here several times and had my family down for my mums 70th this weekend, so reccomended mamma mias, there was 14 of us, we was pre Warned they was short on cooks, and said said we didn't mind waiting. food was absolutely amazing and service was brilliant, couldnt fault it, the mamma mia pizza is an absolute banger, big respect to the chef on his own still keeping food to high standards, thankyou very much, my family really enjoyed it!

Service was ok, we had pre ordered as a large group, of 8, took about 20 mins for our drinks to come, it was a bottle of wine and lemonade. The pizza was very salty. No real atmosphere, I was expecting authentic Italian, but overall wasn't too bad. They had ran out of a few things like tiramisu, its a Monday surley this would've been done for the week. A fee other desserts were missing so none of us had it

Such a lovely place. Faultless for the owners manner, service just right, fabulous food, staff & good value too. Noticed when I got home that they never charged us for the bottle of Nero we had, so of course we went back in the following week to pay for it. We look forward to always eating with these guys Thank you.

The bride and groom were warmly welcomed and throughout the evening. As they left there was a great response from fellow diners. The venue was booked under recommendation from a local florist. She was right to. The restaurant was a delight and the Sicilian host/manager had the Italian flare, charm and humour. The Calzone was equal to that in Naples. The fish and prawn dishes that of Amalfi and the Lasagna and Bolognese equally as good. Wine was nicely matched. I like my vongole and cannonau these were not on the menu but what I did have was not a disappointment. So what ever your event, romantic, birthday please give this intimate restaurant a try. Oh, give the lemoncello a try to finish your meal.

We booked this restaurant to celebrate my husband’s birthday with a group of friends. It is a gem! All our meals were delicious, like the best food we’ve eaten when visiting Italy…and at a reasonable price. It was lovely to have carafes of wine too. The staff were friendly and helpful on the night and when we contacted them to pre-book the occasion. We will look forward to our next visit. Thank you for making the evening so enjoyable.

I have been using this eatery for many years. This place serves good quality freshly prepared food. The service is friendly and the staff will spend as much time as needed with help on any questions about the dishes they serve. Prices are reasonable especially when considering the high quality of the food.

You are a lovely restaurant with lovely food, always fresh, I have been here a lot of times and you are always very nice, however, I felt uncomfortable last night with the way you were treating your staff, it was the more ‘mature’ female and male shall we say, huffing, puffing, eye rolling and teeth gritting at younger staff members, not everyone has years of experience, younger less experienced staff become flustered under pressure, you get out of people what you put in, be kinder to your staff please, this was really difficult to see, please take this as constructive

Lovely evening meal with the family. Great food, excellent wine. The staff were a little rushed off their feet, and we did get charged a service charge twice on our bill (which was corrected). But it was a very busy night for them tbf.

We booked this meal as a work outing/dinner There was 12 of us in total and we were told to send an email to pre book all food orders due to being a family run business. We arrived and was ok, furniture was old wooden chairs, restaurant seemed pleasant enough. There was another large group already in the restaurant which did affect our service, we were sitting around waiting for drinks orders and wasn't offered any water while we waited. (thats a personal touch i guess) The starters finally arrived after around 40mins and was terrible, bland and tasteless. The calamari was cooked from frozen not fresh considering we had to prep order, the garlic bread was stodgy and tasted of raw onion. The mains didn't get any better, basically not authentic Italian food at all Don't waste your money or time

A great dinner here. Have been here several times before and always had an exemplary experience. Our waitress tonight, Louise, was as delightful as ever. Our food was delicious and competitively priced. Do give Mamma Mia a go. Rochester High Street is highly competitive for eateries but this restaurant deserves support as a small, well-run restaurant!
