Food lovely. Portion size very poor for price

Been going here every Friday evening the last 3 times the service is bad young girl with blonde hair rude has no waiting experience or just don’t care when order come she just slams on table and ALWAYS forgets something, she is to busy messing about with the boy staff who also have no experience but they are not rude !!!! I probably wont return again

Once again the service was terrible and items missing from my order. The staff need to stop talking to their friends and start taking notice of what they are doing and making sure everyone’s order is complete. Afraid this is the last time I will be visiting this fish and chip shop in Baldock.

Rude management, thinks it's a posh mcdonalds.

Food tasty, young ladies behind the counter friendly but management sucks the women who stands next to stairs is rude, opinionated and just nasty never been before and would NOT!!! Ordered food not knowing we had to go up stairs and order manager shouting and said he can’t go upstairs it’s not a macdonalds and continued to be nasty. I would not go back there again she’s put me off!

Forty years ago, when this was Taylor's chip shop and restaurant, it was a really decent reasonably priced (for the 80s) chip shop and brilliant restaurant, with good hot portions, crispy battered fish and excellent service. I'm so sorry to say, now that it's the Maltings, it has become a very overpriced mediocre chip shop and not a very good restaurant. I have been here 3 times over the last 3 years (always with others, who say they like it). Today, I was in a party of 16. When I finally got my (so called large cod and chips), 20 mins after receiving the mushy peas (they had also forgot my order and the staff didn't even check everybody had their order!). So when I eventually received my order, it really did disappoint. £16.95 for a small piece of (soggy) battered lukewarm cod, a few lukewarm soggy chips, and (by that time) an egg cup of cold mushy peas, for an additional £2.25. I asked the waiter to warm the peas as they had been on the table for 20 mins. She bought an even colder pot of mushy peas out. By this time, I had given up expecting a nice meal. And to top this, they had the nerve to charge a 10% service charge on top (no mention of this at all on the menu). Compared to the other fish and chip shops I've eaten in around the country, this is in the bottom two. I was not going to complain at the time, as I was in a large party and I did not want to upset others in the party, who say they like the retaurant. However, I have eaten in far better chip ship restaurants at much lower prices. Had I been on my own, I just would have left and not eaten the rest after the first taste and gone to the fabulous Indian restaurant along the road (which I rate as 5*). The owners need to reduce their over inflated prices, ensure waiters are properly trained to check everyone has their order and is happy. And if something is returned asking to heat it up, then just do as requested - don't bring back a colder item! When serving large cod, ensure it is a large piece and not soggy small/medium, but most of all, serve the food piping hot, not lukewarm. A lot of improvement needed to come up to the standard of many other chip shops around the country. Needless to say, I'm not going to be returning. The best chippy restaurant so far has been in Nik's in Belper, Derbyshire. I suggest the owners take a visit to see how good and fairly priced a chip shop restaurant can be!

Twice I’ve ordered large cod large chips and been given regular chips it’s not hard to get right

Unfortunately the portion sizes are ridiculously small for the price, I've never seen chips or cod that small! Had to wait 30-40 minutes for the food to be made so overall the experience wasn't brilliant.

1st. time and definitely more to come. Beautiful restaurant but no lift up to the restaurant so not for people who can't do stairs unfortunately. But the takeaway service is equally lovely. Won fish shop of the year and I can see why. Highly recommended.

Recently came to live in Baldock. Love dining at Maltings. Food and service always of a high standard.

Visited here today from Kent. Had an absolutely fantastic meal here. Beautifully cooked. No grease. The Cod & Chips were gorgeous. The restaurant upstairs was spotless and welcoming. Great friendly people 👏 👌 👍

For people watching their weight, this is the perfect place to buy a take away. The portions are tiny but their prices are not.

Went in for a takeaway on a Friday night, not busy so can't understand why chips were anaemic, saveloy was stone cold and didn't even pack pie that was ordered, none of this was known until we got home. Definitely won't be going there again

Normally a very good chippy. Went in tonight, staff arguing over the fact that two orders had been sent out to the wrong people, int he argument served our take away. As no chips had been prepared during this argument was sent away with the most meagre portion of chips, three persons chips combined didn’t even amount to a normal one person serving

Dined upstairs. It feels back to it’s hey day best, great food, very reasonable prices, and friendly people.

The title says it all really. Cannot fault this place. Staff are friendly and attentive. Food is just gorgeous. Not greasy either. I’ve eaten in quite a few fish and chip restaurants & it’s one of the best there is. 10/10

I found the upstairs seating area really nice and inviting, the staff were really nice as well , polite. I chose the regular sized cod and chips , the portion size was small and the cod was small but nicely cooked , cost of meal was too expensive, prices I feel need to come down as inflation drops I would not return again to eat in ., My personal opinion, i would return for a take away lunch though.

Haven’t had fish and chips in ages so we bought a take away from here last night. The fish was fine; nicely cooked, the batter not too thick and not too greasy. However the chips were insipid and soggy in fact dreadful. My husband had asked the woman serving if we could have some that were either a bit more crispy and a little more cooked. Another woman who was serving interjected and said “there’s only one type, anyway we double cook them” - so no. I’m afraid we binned them. It’s a shame because they’re supposed to serve good fish and CHIPS. I’d buy the fish again but definitely not their chips.

What a joke first time visiting this fish and chip shop to be told ‘ we have no chips ‘ ???? Bad management won’t be trying there again no excuse for running out of chips other than organisation

Hate giving bad reviews but when you tell the server the food was rubbish only to be told they don't care says it all soggy batter and cold mushy peas ain't hard to get right so disappointed

Well, I'm a world traveller, and I've been spoilt when it comes to great fish and chips! But this said, for a local fish and chip takeaway, it's up there in my top 3, chips are chunky freshly chipped, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, just how they should be, unlike some who use the what I'd call " frozen oven chips" The cod was large (not a small piece disguised in heavy batter) and perfectly cooked Price wise, it's very reasonable, most costal locations are now over the £10 - £11 for a mediocre portion, Maltings definitely give you more than your moneys worth Yep, very happy

Foods expensive for what you get, order something and told they don’t have that item after paying ! Staff messing around and took 5 mins before they even acknowledged I was there waiting to be served … overall not great

Went here on Good Friday for lunch, we went to church, and went here straight after. We were pleased we booked a table, as it was very busy. There were 5 of us,and we had the pensioners special, as we call it. You get Cod, chips, mushy peas or garden peas,also you get a drink, hot, tea or coffee or cold soft drink. All for £9-95. Really lovely and fresh cooked, straight from the frier. Lovely fish and lovely chips. The staff are very friendly, and the people downstairs who are cooking are very friendly too. There are stairs to go up, so not suitable if you are not good on stairs. But downstairs there is some seating also seats outside if the weather is good.

We made our first visit to the maltings fish restaurant Friday evening 26/04/2024 , and it was so good we went back Saturday evening as well.I have eaten plaice for thirty years, but have never had plaice as good as this, it was perfect on both occasions. The staff are polite, friendly and very helpful. The restaurant is spotless and has a great atmosphere. I would highly recommend the maltings fish restaurant too everyone.

We were favoured with another very nice meal of perfectly cooked best quality Cod and Chips last Wednesday. So pleased Malting Restaurant in Baldock is now back up to the excellent standards that Paul Taylor worked to. Now also the whole shop is improved to a very high standard, with the very good practical layout. The Proprietor has a very clear desire to see his customer's well fed and fully satisfied, his team of assistant's are all very kindly respectful and nice people. A few days later we had take away of Regular Cod and Chips which we enjoyed eating them in our car. They were perfectly cooked highest quality and presented in a most convenient box, so we could eat from it as it sat nicely on our car seat tables. (Update) we continue enjoy. Yesterday when the Proprietor kindly as we were leaving asked "how was your meal" my answere was excellent! Maltings Restaurant is the best, even better now than the very high standard that Paul Taylor worked to, which is to say something.

Super fish and chips tonight. Best in the Baldock/Stotfold area. Tasty haddock and nice batter and good to have senior discount. Will be back

Opted for the pensioners fish and chips in the restaurant upstairs.This is the second time I have dined here; the food and service are excellent.The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. Good sized portions accompanied by a pot of tea. Highly recommended Gerald Vrsalovich

I popped in last week and enjoyed a senior cod and chips, it was delicious. I find myself back here this week, the food is fresh and delicious and the service upstairs whilst listening to Heart 70’s adds to this lovely experience. The staff are welcoming and you get a nice goodbye too. Thank you.

I go out of my way to go here on a drive to Norfolk. Really, really good fish and chips. Yes, it's not cheap, and yes, the fish can be small, but the taste is tremedous. They do have a rather protective attitude to the vinegar tho...

Really good fish n chip restaurant upstairs with real quality fish and chips, great for OAPs who they do a meal deal for with a cuppa although you can have a beer if desired. Definitely worth a visit or two.

Great fish and chips, great atmosphere, lovely little place..... Just be prepared to sell a kidney. Fish and chips is pricey these days. Definitely not a reflection on this wonderful place, just a small fact of life, prices are going up!!

I usually use Baldock Fish & Chips but they were being refurbished, so I decided to go to The Maltings for convenience. Sadly, I won’t be using them again! I ordered a cod and large chips for myself and my son to share (I based my decision on Baldock Fish & Chips portions) and was VERY DISAPPOINTED when I opened the box to find a ridiculously TINY piece of cod and a portion of chips that would have fed two children………it most definitely wasn’t a large chips!! The service was good and the staff were polite but sadly the food a huge disappointment!!

Had a lovely chippy tea sitting outside Maltings tonight. Warm, friendly atmosphere from the team inside. Can especially recommend the halloumi burger (cooked to perfection). Thanks

Really really poor. Price is just insane. OK things are a lot nowadays but £9 for a 'large' cod that I would suspect was, what 6-7oz? Chips were soggy considering they were fresh out. Stop cooking with a timer (kept shouting the seconds left) and use your eyes! Also if you want to save some money, you don't need 5 people standing around on a weekday lunch time! 2 max. Wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend. Especially with the competition 10 doors down!

Lovely chips and great Saveloys, was my go-to for lunch whilst stationed in Baldock on the Prince's Trust. Staff are friendly and there is a nice little seating area upstairs too.

Myself and my partner enjoyed a lovely meal here. We dined in , service was impeccable, all the the staff were friendly. Food was great.

I remember this Fish & Chip shop when it was called Cliff Taylor's and was the best for miles around. People including me used to drive from Royston to buy their food. Sadly I don't think its anywhere as good as it was in the mid 1970's but thats progress and inflation!!

Brilliant gluten free options on a Thursday and Saturday. Tried it for the first time this week - really clear labelling, staff being careful about cross contamination, and more importantly it was delicious! Great to have a gluten free vegetarian option too with the halloumi. We'll be back!

Stunningly good fish and chips at a bargain price. Pukka pies also served. Restaurant is upstairs, it isn't fancy, but a really great place. I last came here 20 years ago, and if anything, it is better. No greasy chips here!

Decided to finally review this place. I learnt they won an award and went back after one year. It’s still really good but not the same. Oilier and portions have been reduced. Still better than anything else in baldock.

It's been a weekly tradition for my family to come back to this shop specifically for fish and chips and they're always good! Chips are proper nice and staff are lovely. Recommended chippy

Lovely time staff great day food

Third of what will be a regular experience I expect. Photos from the most recent two visits. I usually arrive to take away on the earlier side and during the week mostly around 6pm. Orders are taken promptly and accurately. Potions are of a nice size - not too big. The batter is always crisp and the chips are well cooked with not many small bits. I can also recommend the curry sauce. Service ranges from very quick to good (if they have to cook something for my order it has always arrived quickly and the need for such had been explained while ordering and before payment). Very happy - worth the drive. Free parking nearby always a bonus.

Owner wants to concentrate on serving customers instead of trying to be little customers with the cost of living crisis you don't want to give customers a reason on why they don't want to use their business at present I wouldn't recommend anybody to use this shop as for the woman who runs it only interest is to drive people away and to stir trouble people should be warned

Perfectly good Chippy! Unusual to have a restaurant upstairs. Pricey, as they all have become, Fish and Chips are no longer the cheap takeaway they once were.

Completely hit or miss. Stood in the shop on a Saturday evening and we were ignored for the best part of ten minutes. On a weekday great fish and chips.

Nice food but portions definitely been dramatically reduced, whilst prices have gone up. Large chips 3.75 and barely enough for two people...I'd hate to see a medium. Why cut down on portions of chips?... they don't cost much to buy at all and previously, a large was too much for two people, so won't be back, as I think other places in Baldock offer better value for money.

This is just the best fish and chips. Eat in up stairs in the restaurant with ale and wine. Can't go wrong. Perfect

A while since I had fish and chips , shocked a bit by price but they were nice although small portion compared to other fish and chip shop. Order was taken wrong but refund given although only 1 person seemed to know how to do it. Very pleasant inside and cards taken.

Family have been coming here for years. Saw it change hands and go completely down hill. But now it's in new hands, and it's great! Firstly, a lot of fast food joints like this can be quite dirty/sub standard - this place is spotless, and in the 5/10 minutes we waited for our order, we saw hand cleaning numerous times. Staff are all super sweet/polite (if anyone in the comments suggests otherwise, then just respect that may be whoever dealt with you that ONE day was merely having an off day? Or better yet... you're the problem you absolute Karen? Because there's no way in hell any of them are rude you muppets). My dad's pretty fussy, so for him to compliment the fish is enough for me. I had the chicken, which was perfectly cooked. Chips aren't greasy either, they've got them perfect. Price - absolutely reasonable (bordering on cheap). All in all, best fish and chip shop you'll find in the area. Forgot to take photos as I was busy stuffing it down my gullet :)

This chip shop was spotless and staff friendly and food good. Portions could be a bit more generous for your £5 . Ordered 3 Savaloy and chips other than that food nice and fresh.

New to the area and found a voucher to use in the restaurant upstairs. Interior nothing special however the fish and chips was very nice! Staff very friendly special propts to the young blonde gentleman seving us very friendly and service with a smile:) pictured is large cod and chips

Small portions, for large orders, haddock was not like it was years ago in there, kids regular cod , looked like a fish finger £9.20 for a regular cod and chips, asked for large chips, same as the kids regular, will never darken the door again in this place, have had cheaper fish and chips in Brighton.

Very good quality fish n chips. Extremely good hygiene and staffing levels. Is not open on Sunday or Monday so don't be caught out by this. Open times are 11 30am to 2 and 430 to 9 on the other days, so not open continuously throughout the afternoon.
