Fantastic local pub, we visit most weeks for a few drinks after work, either with friends, family or just as a couple. Margaret and Brad are really welcoming and there is an amazingly atmosphere, such a comfortable place to visit. Quiz nights on Tuesdays and a lovely relaxed vibe on Fridays. All dogs welcome and are provided with a treat by Margaret and a bowl of water upon request. The pizzas are to die for and a fantastic addition, so glad it’s within walking distance for us!

Popping into the Malt Shovel for a birthday lunch I was pleasantly surprised to find they now offered 8 inch pizzas as part of their menu. As an 'experienced' pizza eater I had not eaten a pizza without tomato sauce as part of the topping, but I ordered the Ham & Shroom pizza, with Béchamel sauce instead of tomato, with interest. When it arrived, I was not disappointed, the very tasty, crispy base, combined wonderfully with the smooth sauce and the excellent smoky ham, topped off with the balsamic glaze made for a superb tasting pizza. Excellent Brad and Margaret, thank you.

I was on my way to get some much needed supplies for a very ill lady I look after and on my way she called me, this is unusual and she only does this due to some distress she is in. I couldnt answer as my hands free is broken so I chose this pub carpark to pull over and make this call, away from exercising public. I park up and immediately rang the lady. To my utter shock the landlord come bouncing out of his pub f ing at me, putting both himself, me and the lady I care for at a higher risk of coronavirus. I tried to explain what I was doing from inside the car and he just threw more obscenities in my direction, almost spitting as he did. I didnt want him getting any closer than he already was so I hung up on the lady and drove to the nearest spot I could safely pull over. I have never been to this pub but if that is what the landlord is like I dred to think what it would be like if I ate there. If you are ok with nasty mouth landlords then good luck. I will definitely not be frequenting the place. As it happened the lady had fallen in her home and needed help and I had to go back and help her, i hope the landlord is very proud of himself.

Not a child friendly pub. Welcoming and happy to serve us with , no issues with food and drinks. If your looking for a family friendly pub this is not the place for you. I have 2 lively spirited children and they were made to feel a problem. I can see that it’s an older generation cliental, but the problem with that is that will eventually end and if they don’t welcome the next generation then the pub will fail and close. A most disappointing experience. We won’t be returning as made to feel an inconvenience and felt we had out stayed our welcome.

This is a unique experience, like turning the clock back to how traditional British pubs used to be before the big chains became dominant. No piped music. No gaming machines. No computer-screen order taking. Fantastic real ale and excellent home-cooked food. The menu is simple, traditional and great value. This pub is a credit to the landlord and landlady.

Have used this Pub on and off for many years, through successive landlords/publicans. It has always been a good beer destination with beers from Marston's/Banks's. Brad and Marg have re-vitalized the place since their arrival and it is as busy as it's ever been.

I visited here when I was last in the area and called in again earlier this week. I enjoyed the chilli in a jacket potato with side salad, a piece of Brownie and a posh coffee. I even sat by the open fire. It is rare these days to be able to go to a friendly little local pub (NOT A PUB WITH A RESTAURANT) and get a choice of great homemade food at a reasonable price. I don't want the impersonal service and the reheated mass produced food that you can get in so many places. I also found the staff here friendly and helpful. I will definitely call in again next time I am in the area.

First and foremost, a pub has to serve excellent beer, OK, wine and spirits too. On the beer front, you will not find a better pub than the Malt Shovel. All ales are hand pulled (no keg) and always of excellent quality. You don't see many palces like the Malt Shovel any more. It is definitely a pub that sells food, very good food. It is not the modern pub which is basically a third rate restaurant that happens to sell beer as well. These days, pub grub tends to be pre-prepared, delivered in a van and re-heated by a "chef" who's only necessary qualifaction is the ability to operate a microwave. If that's what you want, then don't go to the Malt Shovel. However, if you want excellent, traditional pub food, prepared fresh on the premises, then the Malt Shovel is definitely for you, lunchtime only, and not at weekends. On our family visit, it was obvious that the Malt Shovel does not have a 'set' type of customer, and all are made extremely welcome by the friendly and efficient staff.

If you're looking for a family run pub that serves home made food the Malt shovel Inn is the place for you, even when I am on a diet I never seem to be able to resist Jo's sweet treats and quiche (which is fantastic!!!).I want to urge anyone who reads the bad reviews to ignore them as in my opinion the Malt Shovel is more welcoming than virtually all of the pubs I have been in recently- I have also never experienced rude staff nor people at the bar waiting endlessly for drinks. Quite the contrary actually and you find most people drinking in there are repeat visitors!! Jo and AJ ( the owners) are often behind the bar which is great and have really turned the place around since taking over, now putting on quiz nights and live music for us all to enjoy. If your looking for a Gourmet pub or one that re-heats mass produced food then this pub isn't for you but if you are just looking for a little local pub that serves great reasonably priced food and a good pint that I would definitely give it a go!!

We went for lunch last Monday, living locally it was nice to walk there and enjoy a glass of Hobgoblin beer with our meal. The food was home cooked and hot and tasty and pleasant staff particularly the young man who served us stopping to chat for a moment in between other customers. The lounge was quiet, probably because it was Monday. We had coffee afterwards but felt it rather pricey. In fact our coffees cost nearly as much as our beer!!!!Would we return again? Probably, but sometime in the future and not on a regular basis. A wider choice of menu would be advantageous in view of the new housing being built nearby.

We are local and are very lucky to have such a great local pub, which is so welcoming and friendly to everyone. It has a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere, the lunchtime food is really tasty and good value, a lot of it genuinely homemade. There are also cakes and coffee or tea for lighter bites. The service is always with a smile. They do a good selection of beers and they must be fantastic judging by the amount of time my husband spends in there!! There is a separate bar with TV and dominoes, what I would describe as a traditional men's bar and then a separate lounge which is cosy in the winter with a real log fire and more comfortable seating. It has recently been given a freshen up with a new paint job and more modern fixtures in the ladies and lovely hanging baskets outside to name just a few improvements. There are regular music nights which are really good and it gets busy but the atmosphere is great, everyone is really friendly. When you hear of the amount of pubs closing down its a shame but they wouldn't be closing if they were all as good as The Maltshovel, I hope it continues to go from strength to strength !!

We visited the grove for Mother’s Day, 6 adults, 1 child. 3 x roast chicken, 2 x 8oz fillet steak, 1 children’s chicken nuggets +chips. My meal (steak) came out and looked great, although my stone wasn’t hot enough to cook my steak, onions and mushrooms, my steak although looked great, tasted horrible. £23 to only be satisfied with the chips! My wife also couldn’t eat the chicken and neither could my father Inlaw, only eating less that half there meals. I wouldn’t go back if I’d not Eaton for a month and was offered a free meal!
