Visited today and really impressed with the food and brilliant offer of 2 courses for £10. Also, one of the best GF menus that I have seen.

Two courses for £10, large selection of mains include rump or gammon steaks, full roast dinner choice of beef, pork or gammon, fish, chilli, beef and stilton pie massive filling etc., Our mains were great as we're the desserts. Everything was very fresh and hot. Two young ladies on duty were great, very helpful and pleasant.

Went for Sunday lunch today. Very nice food and desserts! The only downfall that has stopped me rating to a 5 is the drinks (even sugar free) were £3.60. It was a supposed pint but looked smaller. Food though was all good and very fast service. Will visit again.

Having enjoyed several "2 courses for £10" lunches here recently we decided to try the roast beef lunch this Sunday. It was top notch. The beef was plentiful, tender and tasty. The roast potatoes were lovely and crispy, not the soggy ones you often get. The Yorkshire pudding wasn't one of those pre cooked ones that is all air, it was a piece off a large pudding which was crisp round the edge and lovely and soft in the middle. The 5 veg - roast parsnip, carrot, cauliflower, broccoli and braised red cabbage were perfectly cooked, and all served with a good jug of gravy. We have been testing out roast beef Sunday lunches at quite a few places in and around Newport in recent months and this has taken top spot not only for quality but it was also the cheapest. Plus you can wash it all down with a pint of Joule's excellent green monkey craft lager. And being in the centre of town it's walkable from home. It definitely ticks all the boxes!

Popped in for lunch and ordered 2 burgers. Service was spot on throughout and the food was almost great. My spicy bean burger was great except for the bun which had something brushed on the top making it greasy and difficult to eat. My partners beef burger looked cheap, the burgers themselves looked very poor quality and I suspect there was more meat in my veggie burger. My only other gripe is the chopping board it's served on, it makes it very difficult to eat and the little baskets the chips come in are unnecessary. I am aware that these look fancy but a plate is much better.

We met another family today for Sunday dinner. Was a great choice. Some had the full dinner, some a loaded giant Yorkshire pudding and others off the main menu. Although 9 of us all ordering different dishes, everything came out together, hot and within 20 minutes. Landlord popped out the kitchen to check all was good. They were very busy, the team were great and the food excellent. Will be trying their Thursday grill night next.

A great pub, the best in Newport for food and drinks. There’s a lovely outside area great for a hot day! Matt and team have always welcomed us from the moment we’ve walked in. They go out of their way to make sure the food is perfect every time. Sunday dinners are a must! Obviously we visit regularly and would recommend it for a drink in the sun and an afternoon snack or a place to eat.

The pub boasts that it was pub of the year in 2016, but that was under a different, landlord. Unfortunately the current encumbant has let standards slip allarmingly. On the day we went for lunch there were around 20 diners, but only one member of staff. This poor girl was run ragged, taking and delivering orders, clearing and cleaning tables, as well as running the bar. The landlord did appear once, glanced round, took a till reading and disappeared. The food itself was truly dreadful, with the veg clearly left overs from the weekend and re-heated (and this includes the roast potatoes). Whilst it was inexpensive, it was also largely inedible.

My brother and I came to the New Inn for a dinner. We were greeted by a very friendly service manager, and that basically set the theme for that evening with the service manager, bar attendant and food server all being very friendly and polite. The food servings were very well priced and had large portions. I was very impressed and while I have only a short time left in the UK I will certainly be returning and would recommend them to friends and travelers alike. The business has a lot of share platters so if you are the romantic type and like to share a large platter for dinner and even desert then you wont be disappointed.

One of the worst experiences we’ve had in a very long time. We arrived for our 4:30pm pre-booked table only to be welcomed by staff with puzzled faces. It seemed that our table booking had not actually been reserved or set up. Fortunately, the pub wasn’t busy and we were allocated a table (right in view of the bar). We quickly ordered our drinks at the bar and took them over to our table. We then spent around 20 minutes deciding what food to order. We were informed that our order needed to be ordered at the bar so we made our way there and relayed our food order to one of the staff members who put it through their system. The young lady who took our order repeated it back to us and it was all correct. Naturally, we made our way back to our table to enjoy our drinks and wait for our food. 45 minutes went by and still no food. I decided to ask one of the waitresses for an update as to how long we would be waiting. I explained that we had onward plans and so just wanted an idea on how long the food would be. The young lady went to the kitchen. She then returned to our table and said that our order would be another 10 minutes and the wait was ‘on the fish’. I explained that the only fish we had ordered was a side dish and we would be happy to receive the rest of the food. Another 15 minutes passed and not only had we received no food, but no update. I approached a different member of staff and explained the situation. That member of staff then went into the kitchen. She then came out of the kitchen and walked straight past our table and towards the bar area where we could see the staff talking between themselves. Within a few minutes, the member of staff who we spoke to initially stormed out of the kitchen swearing at the kitchen staff. It made us feel really uncomfortable. A different member of staff (somebody who I think had just started their shift) then came over to our table to explain our food order hadn’t made its way to the kitchen. This was despite a staff member having laid our table with cutlery and condiments and the false information given about the wait on the fish. Despite the half hearted apology and confirmation we would not need to pay for our drinks, the service provided was abysmal. I was told that the manager was too busy in the kitchen to come and speak to us and I was asked to leave my contact details so that they could contact me (I didn’t ask to speak to the manager but I would have expected them to address the situation with us directly, especially considering how quiet the dining area was). It was abundantly clear that the staff recognised how poor their service had been and were not in any way willing to address it at the time. I am still yet to hear from management. We have eaten here before and not had any problems. It’s a shame that this experience has now meant that we will be very reluctant to return in the future. It would have been very different if the staff had dealt with the situation honestly and sincerely.

Unfortunately we chose the New Inn to visit today for our Mother’s Day breakfast, and left feeling very disappointed. We arrived at 10.30 and ordered 4 adult breakfasts and 2 children’s, there was no choice of bread, just white and no black pudding, but we were still charged the same price of £10 per breakfast, and the children’s at £8. It took about 20 minutes for our drinks to appear and after about 40 minutes our food appeared, but only half of it! After another 10 minutes I went to ask where the other half of our order was, only to be told the till hadn’t sent the rest of our order (it was one order only) to the kitchen!! All in all we were waiting around 1 hour for breakfast, by which time the children had finished eating and were getting inpatient! We were offered a complimentary hot drink each, which took even longer than the rest of the food to arrive. Just as we were about to ask for our money back the food arrived, it was lovely, but sadly the bad attitude of the one waitress, who clearly couldn’t give two s#%ts about how annoyed we were only added to this awful experience! We will certainly not be returning to this establishment in future!

Really disappointed with the food the last couple of times we’ve been which is a shame as we used to come frequently and never had a bad meal. We came near Christmas last time and they shouldn’t have served food that evening as it was packed and they were obviously understaffed. Food was all over cooked. Our last this week, we paid £5 for chips and they were awful oven fries & barely any of them. We felt ripped off. The staff are lovely but the food is very disappointing.

We visited here for a family meal on a saturday evening. The pub was busy, but we had a table reserved. The staff were friendly and welcoming and ensured we had a vegan menu as when booking we informed them there was one person who was vegan. Their options were better than anywhere we had been before, they had the vegan shepherds pie. I had the bacon and cheese loaded fries and a mac and cheese topped lasagne. Fries were a good portion and had lots of topping. The lasagne was amazing, great combination. Good portion sizes. I had no room for dessert, but others had the homemade sticky toffee pudding and said it was to die for. Overall our visit was good. Everyone enjoyed their food and we all said we would visit again. The staff were lovely and the pub was beautiful and clean. Thanks for a great family evening.

We went here last night for food. We had the New Inn Ultimate Sharer. Now to say this was cooked to perfection would be an understatement this meal was out of this world. There was a bit of everything on there plenty for the both of us to share. We had to get some of it boxed up to take home with us as we just couldn’t finish it. There was a quiz on which we were told about when booking, but we sat up by the fire so it made no difference to our evening. The pub was extremely busy, but the girls on the bar were friendly and attentive checking our food was ok. We are already planning our next visit as the table next to us ordered burgers and they looked mouth watering. Who knows next time we might join in with the quiz.

Popped in for a quick lunch after walking the dog. Decided on a beef sandwich which was a mistake. The bread seemed to be supermarket pre -sliced but the worst part was the beef, it was medium to rare in parts and also contained large pieces of fat. We went to the New Inn on a Friday afternoon, we have been before and had some lovely food, this visit was unfortunately the opposite. We ordered off the standard menu, a Chicken with honey and chilli sandwich with fries, a beef stew and a Jingle burger. It took quite a while for the food to arrive. The Stew was just a plate of very dry beef hardly any juices or gravy, the red cabbage just tasted of excess vinegar and didn't taste fresh at all, and to top it off, it was freezing cold in the middle, so was obviously just taken out of the freezer/fridge and microwaved. This was returned swiftly to a member of staff who was just coming out of the kitchen. The Chicken sandwich was 'ok' but didn't have much flavour to it, seasoning may of helped? The burger was fine, nothing special but the Coleslaw that came in a separate ramekin, didn't taste very nice at all, so that was left. Sadly, not the standard of food we have received here before, but it has lowered our opinion, and we will not be in a hurry to return. 😔 I will just add that my husband was offered a replacement meal for his beef stew, but I'm afraid he had already been put off by then. We were not charged for the Beef stew, it was taken off the bill, but really the whole meal was well below par.

Overall a lovely meal in a nice setting! The gammon was delicious and I loved the parmesan truffle fries, definitely worth the £2 upgrade! The sausage and mash was also tasty but is a smaller meal - my fiance had finished his meal far before I finished mine. This was very close to a 5 star rating except for one issue with the meal upgrade: I wanted to upgrade with both truffle fries (£2) and surf and turf (£3) however I was told I could only have one upgrade and in order to have both I would need a separate plate of truffle fries as a side, which I am still confused about as I cannot understand why I couldnt just pay the £5 total cost to upgrade with truffle fries and surf and turf, and the staff couldnt explain this either, only that I could only have one or the other. I decided on truffle fries for the upgrade and missed out on the surf and turf. Also, the table was dirty on arrival but this was cleaned instantly when we raised it. Despite the issues with the meal upgrade options, the staff are friendly, the food is lovely and the prices are reasonable. Would definitely recommend a visit!

So we confirmed the kitchen was open until 9.30 before ordering a bottle of wine intending to order a meal later. Went back to bar to order food at 8.50 (getting hungry) only to be told the kitchen was closed?! I was fuming as we checked all this before ordering drinks. So too late to eat elsewhere either. This place used to be an amazing gastropub, but a local confirmed it had changed hands a few years ago.. it shows! Menu looked very basic pub food and lots of half full plates being returned to the kitchen whilst we waited our hour thinking we could order food.

We stopped off here on our way to north Wales on a Friday night. We had two tired kids with us. It wasn't that busy and the food was nice enough, chips were good, but we had to wait over an hour for our food. We had no warning that it would take that long. Nobody came over to explain, only when we asked where the food was were we told that it was just being prepared. Our kids were climbing the walls asking why we couldn't go to the chippy over the road. We were offered a free drink. We'd already paid for the food so couldn't knock money off the bill. We eventually arrived at our destination past 11pm, over an hour late. It's a nice venue but disappointingly I probably wouldn't visit again.

It's the kind of gastropub with a small daily menu, but everything has earned its place on there... so although there was only 1 plant based choice (marked as vegan), when the quality is this good, it barely matters. I had the beetroot and butternut squash Wellington, and the cheese board instead of dessert. It was all spectacular.

I am so disappointed. This pub was amazing for food and a great place to bring family and friends, but i was let down and embarrassed when i brought my friends for a meal here. We were first in and last to get food. When we received the food it was dry. The staff had to go and buy food supplys from waitrose as they had nothing in. They only good thing was the service from the staff. They were apologetic and gaves a very large discount and free drinks. Even their waitresses thought the food was shocking. The pub needs to get back on its feet fast.

Loved this place, visiting the New Inn came at a perfect time. On a Saturday, we walked into Newport and found that none of the pubs/eateries in the centre of town served food between 3pm and 6pm. This was very disappointing! We were about to give up until we found the New Inn on our radar - it was a short walk out from the centre, which is why it wasn’t originally one of our options - and we were so glad that we chanced upon it! The staff were lovely and friendly from the offset and - most importantly - they were serving food. Everyone in our group enjoyed the food and drinks, and the vegan options were very good! Banana blossom “fish” and chips is not a common menu item in the most populous of places, so to find this in Newport was a welcome surprise. The corn ribs - while delicious - were very messy. Normal ribs are pretty messy, I guess? Pub started to get busy later into the afternoon, which shows that it’s a popular spot for locals and it made for a great atmosphere. If you’re visiting Newport and don’t want to get disappointed by Bod, The Bridge, or Shakespeare and their weird kitchen opening times, just go to the New Inn. It’s most likely the better option regardless!

Unassuming from the outside but lovely decor and layout inside - cosy corners if you want them. Friendly and attentive staff, a good range of drinks and an appealing menu. We went on a Sunday so the roast is the obvious choice, although the fish and chips went down well. Large car park across the road too! Would have been five stars if the food was next level up, eg if the gravy was homemade or the veg went beyond crisply boiled.

Very nice evening...polite efficient staff..can't fault food...all Covid 19 rules adhered to. Highly recommend the Roast Turkey & Xmas Pudding...left me feeling very full & satisfied. Well done Darren & team ....xxx Change of management 2022...trade declined due to being closed for several weeks between managers. Staff all changed. Has now started small food offering but yet to try. Given time the New Inn should ne popular again

Went for a Sunday lunch meal as never had a bad experience at the New Inn before. All started of great lovely drinks and starters. Unfortunately when the mains came out the gravy was so watery it ruined the meal, when we approached the staff after we wasn’t table checked neither asked how the meal was no one came back over to discuss it further for the price I wouldn’t go back again.

I have been to this great pub for food, drink and entertainment many times but on 20th Feb I arrived at 16.15, having walked from the other side of town in bad weather and asked for a table for one. The advertised food serving time was up to 16.30 so I had walked fast to get there. I arrived and was told they had stopped serving. No apology. I contacted them via Facebook and still had no apology. As I say, good pub but this poor advertising and customer service has put me off

Looking forward to eating here but kitchen closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Told bar staff we would have to have a chippy tea on our way home instead . We were told to bring our tea in the pub. Staff then proceeded to lay our table with cutlery and condiments. Can't say enough good things about the staff at this lovely clean and friendly pub.

Visited on a thursday evening with friends. Big room with some large groups of people made it quite noisy. Interesting menu, not a great choice for vegearians. Table service for drinks, which were dealt with quickly. Food took a long time to arrive but was well presented , tasty, and a good size. Service through was very pleasnt.

Came here for lunch on Saturday with family including two grandchildren aged 18 months and age 5. Lovely waitress who served us, food was nice and tasty the only gripe was we had to wait for nearly an hour for our food so our grandson was getting grumpy. Board games and blankets made the wait better. Will return soon.

Ventured out to Newport today after a time of recuperation following a suspected mini stroke. Absolutely petrified of being out alone! Wanted some nice food now I’ve got my tastebuds back and was directed to the ‘New Inn’. The staff were so patient and welcoming, the pub itself is really lovely and so relaxing, I could have stayed all day! Thanks for such a good experience today, should any cheese lovers read this, I recommend the Baked Camembert! Be warned though it’s a mission for one person to eat.

Came for a quiet meal with another couple and their 6 month old baby. To start, our friend had ordered a burger which we were informed 30 minutes later they had none left. We then watched the waitress tell another table the same thing, order something else only for their burgers to turn up 5 minutes later! We had to wait 50 minutes for our starters (baring in mind we had a Camembert sharer& 2 lots of cheesy garlic bread!) & when they arrived only 3 out of 4 starters were delivered & the Camembert was missing chutney as stated on the menu. We then didn’t have any cutlery for about 5/10 minutes and had to go inside to ask. When the cutlery finally arrived we only received 2 sets for 4 people. When the last portion of cheesy garlic bread finally arrived our main courses came out at the same time. Completely baffled, we had to ask for them to be taken away as we were still eating our starters. By this time it was dark and our friends baby was becoming uncomfortable. When they eventually came to take the starters away & brought our mains, the waiter didn’t know which steak was which (one was well done, one rare & one medium rare). Not to add the steaks came out with skin on fries when they should have been with hand cut chips (minor I know but when everything else had gone wrong, the least they could have done was tell us they had no hand cut chips). By this point we were completely put out and just wanted to leave, however we had paid £50 per couple for our food so we’re begrudged to walk away! When we complained we were offered a round of drinks on them which we accepted as we thought this was all we were going to get. There was also a bottle of alcohol dropped next to our table. The annoying thing about it is the food was actually lovely. The steak was cooked lovely & tasted really nice. Oh and to top it off, as we walked out and past the kitchen, the chef was smoking a vape! To my partners disgust he said ‘why is the chef allowed to smoke his vape in the kitchen’ & the chef came out and spoke to my partner in a rude manner and said ‘it’s allowed mate’. Safe to say we won’t be returning for food. On a lighter note, the young girl who served us was lovely & tried her best to make the best of a bad situation.

Initially just popped in for a coffee as we were in this delightful town. The staff were without exception brilliant and went out of their way to provide excellent service. It makes a difference and there is a sense that this Inn really values customers. We decided to book a Sunday lunch with our family and although it was such short notice they managed to find a table. The menu is varied with plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. The service was highly attentive and efficient and the food was beautifully cooked and well presented. The Sunday menu offers two courses for £10.00. Good range of drinks from the Joules brewery (who own the property. Parking in the council owned car park (a 2 minute walk) parking in the long stay is free (no ticket required) and the short stay offers 2 hours free parking (you need to obtain a ticket from the pay and display machine) A lovely beer garden which has awnings to protect you from any rain. Wheelchair accessible. Highly recommended with many thanks to all the staff, we will return.

Just moved to the area and wanted to try the local pubs. This is hands down some of the best food we have had this year- my partner had the mixed grill and said all the meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly. We have now found our new local with Sunny!
