My wife thinks the best fish and chips she's ever had and a fussy 5yo demolished the cod fingers - it's certainly up there with the best chip shops in the UK.

Best fish I've had! The portions look small on arrival, but I was well stuffed eating the medium tail fillet. Nice wine.

For many years in this town, we’ve been coming in this place, and can say that this has the best fish and chips! Also their other food in the menu is worth to try. Thought recently went back again for a couple of times, I got disappointed of the service as it felt a bit colder than what it used to be, I would say it was a snob experience for a couple times that I went recently. Otherwise this place has very good beer battered Haddock fish and sweet potato fries on the side.

Great experience at the Malt and Anchor special mention to James who looked after us all night, fantastic fish and chips (beer battered of course) with the ham hock and leek mushy peas finished off with two great cocktails.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience with a takeaway the fish and chips were average. We also found two hairs in two of our fish and chips which put us of our food and made us feel sick and couldn't eat anymore. So ment we had to go hungry. All our food was cold by the time we received it. We just heated the food up only to find we were unable to eat said dinner because of the hairs that were mixed in the the fish batter 🤢 . I will definitely not be ordering again.

Didn't get chance to eat as the level of customer service was poor before even ordering...Disappointed with the huffy, cant be bothered attitude from a member of staff and would not recommend. Took my service and money somewhere else.

You know when you stumble across a rare find that is truly amazing. This is what we found in the Cotswolds on our recent visit. We saw all the accolades when we entered, you know the best of this and that. In this case it was EXTREMELY true. There batter is very light and not greasy. The fish was very fresh and was great. Their service was amazing. Their server Jackie saw that my brother in law was having issues ordering because he is very Kosher. She make sure is meal was processed separately and served on parchment paper. He and us were VERY happy. This place deserves all the write ups they have gotten. This is the best fish and chips I have ever had.

Jackie gave me expert guidance on the menu and made sure my visit was most pleasant. My first fish and chips experience over here, and it didn’t disappoint! Generous portions and everything was very fresh. Love to come back!

I rarely write reviews, but Malt & Anchor is worth praising. I went with my daughter on a Tuesday gluten free night. She lives in Berlin and has Coeliac disease, so trad fish and chips are a treat and GF a must. To be super critical, we both agreed the fish coating was a little too salted for us, but that aside, this was the best fish and chips I can remember ever having. I'm 70, I've had a fair few fish and chip suppers. And the rest of the menu reads great, so I'll be back, no question. The service was superb, thanks to Dan, and the restaurant itself is comfortable enough and way above chippie. I've rated it very good. It's actually very, very good.

We got a lunchtime takeaway and waited in the restaurant for it for ten mins. The atmosphere inside is great. The owner was fantastic, checking on seated guests and being really helpful with us. The food itself is delicious. Best fish & chips within a 50 mile radius (better than Simpson’s in Stroud and Russell’s in Broadway!!)

Enjoyed traditional fish and chips. Ordered small cod loin, and on serving thought we’d made wrong choice as looked rather small - how wrong were we? Just managed to finish it, and I mean just! Batter was lovely and crisp, cod beautifully white, chips were delicious. Service was excellent, our request for tea to be delivered with meal was carried out to perfection (you’d be surprised how hard this is to achieve in many establishments). Highly recommended

Wonderful experience,fast service,the food was super yummy. We had 2xadult fish and chips (the curry sauce was really good!) And our daughter had the sausage and mash,we all cleaned our plates. We ordered our take away online and collected 30 minutes later. Not quite ready but not too long to wait. Nice to get chips nicely browned and crispy but still soft inside. We have had so many disappointing take away meals from the chip shop over the years. Seriously these were some of the best chips we’ve ever had! Haddock was very nice but I have to deduct a star because the breaded scampi sadly was quite soft and needed a few minutes to crisp up I feel. Saying that, the ingredients all felt very fresh and tasty. Also the chip shop curry was quite thick and not the best we’ve had. Taking everything into account, the meal was enjoyable and we would definitely return. If the two issues were resolved it would be a five star review for sure!

I happened to stumble upon this place as I was walking through the town. The food is excellent, it’s all locally sourced, fresh and everything is made from scratch. Jackie was amazing and you can really tell that they are passionate about what they do. I highly recommend going here if you love fish/seafood as much as me. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Quite possibly the best Fish & Chips I’ve ever had.

Fabulous food, very tasty fish and chips with an excellent, light and flavourful batter - we have previously had a very good meal here. However on a recent visit, the food was not hot enough probably because the food was standing around before the server brought it to us and the tables in the upstairs dining area were not clean. The upstairs dining area could be much improved with a lick of paint and some nice decoration and furnishings. So, super food let down by the dining area and slow service.

Truly amazing fish and chips but what I didn’t expect was that the most remarkable part of the lunch was the side dish. I have NEVER enjoyed them until this meal. They’re delicious and my incredible server Jackie said they make a version with ham. I’ll be back!

We had a lovely meal on our holiday to Cirencester. Jackie was very pleasant and made our experience very memorable. She also gave us some tips for local attractions.

Wandered round Ciren for a bit, then went in this place, we spotted the award board outside so thought it would be a good meal. Atmosphere was OK, very quiet.... now I know why. Chips were OK at best. The pie however was terrible, I dont understand how they managed to remove all the lovely flavour of chorizo and wild boar but they did. On top of that it needed all the tastless gelatinous instant gravy to get it down it was so dry. Mushy peas missing of second meal, some misunderstanding apparently, but half a pot did arrive fairly promptly. I get this place is in the center of ciren, but 2 poor chip meals and a soft drink each for nearly £60..... I thought Harry Ramsdens was over priced rubbish but M&A have taken the award for that too. Take note of all the low reviews as they replicate our experience here. Sorry to say we won't be visiting again.

Quant little place, very clean, with amazing food and great service. Jackie was very accommodating, sweet and patient- especially with our children. Only critique we have was that the portions were a bit small compared to the price (except for the chips). Food quality made it worth it for us. Recommended.

The fish was lovely, the chips just okay ( was expecting better for price). Service slow ( one waitress but not that many tables). All 3 of us were not given what we ordered. As we had been waiting a while we accepted it, we’d asked for no batter. I asked for aioli iso tartare was told I’d have to pay extra ( still got tartare which I guess they threw away ), looked like a great menu but wondering if we got a bad day or if it’s always like that, as would like to have gone back ( love fish). Ps the batter we didn’t want was delicious, but… Oh and the coffee was horrible, definitely don’t order that!

The quality of the chips was subpar and did not live up to the establishment's claims of award-winning status. Additionally, the service provided by the female staff member downstairs was overly pretentious and did not contribute to a positive dining experience. It would be advisable to allocate your financial resources elsewhere and avoid this establishment.

We ordered off of delivero and asked for extra salt and vinegar to put meal. In all honesty I was expecting it to be soggy. It did arrive later than expected, and the delivery lady apologies, but it was well worth the wait! I even called the shop to say how lovely it was. Best fish and chips we have ever had. Mushy peas tasty and fresh, curry sauce fresh and flavoursome! Lovely meal thank you. Looking forward to trying something else off of the menu!

Food was honestly so disappointing. I have better fish and chips in Malibu, California where I'm from. The fish was rubbery and the chips were stale. The prices were preposterous and I'm just so disappointed I wasted a meal and money here.

I had the cod loin, chips, tartar sauce and mushy peas (as a takeaway) on Friday evening. Where do I start.... probably the best fish and chips I have ever eaten. The cod was perfection. Flaky and juicy. The batter perfectly crisp. The chips were delicious, as were the sides. I can't wait to return.

This is a pricier spot for fish and chips but me and my mum were both very happy with the meal we had here. Instead of traditional fish and chips I was tempted by a special of pan fried Bass with paprika butter, salsa and rocket with chips. This was beautifully cooked and presented and I was very happy I picked it ( though traditional fish and chips was very tempting). My mum was also very happy with her prawnageddon which she found very filling. If you treat this more like a seafood restaurant than a fish and chips stop the prices make more sense and the quality of cooking means it should be viewed this way. It's competitive with other spots in Cirencester and I would definitely return when I want a high quality seafood meal.

We visited Cirencester today and visited Malt and Anchor for fish and chips, we sat down in the restaurant which is nicely decorated in a relaxed nautical theme. We were served by Jackie who couldn't have been more helpful helping us decide what to eat. We both went for the cod in beer batter and chips with the hotter curry sauce, and we both honestly agreed it was THE best fish and chips we have ever eaten! I would literally go back to Cirencester just to eat here again.

Disappointing! Upon entering the Malt & Anchor, things looked promising. It was nicely decorated, appeared clean and tidy, and the staff were welcoming. Given the high prices, I was anticipating quality, tasty food. Unfortunately, the bubble batter prawns were a serious letdown, with the batter undercooked on the inside, causing the prawns to drown in wet batter. The ham hock mushy peas were nice, though the portion was small. The salt and pepper squid was flavoursome, albeit lacking in salt and pepper, and the few pieces seemed lost in a large box. The cod loin was tasty and meaty, yet marred by more soggy batter. The chips were dreadful. The cheesecake was fluffy and delicious, with a generous serving. Regrettably, although some aspects of the meal were enjoyable, too many items fell short, and it seemed overpriced for what was offered. This has become a regular place for us. Best fish and chips ever, and the menu is so varied. Really good value and the service is so helpful and friendly. Special shout out today to our waitress, Jackie who it was lovely chatting with. Definitely a restaurant not to miss if you’re in the area.

Outstanding cod and chips with excellent mushy peas: I upgraded to the ham hock and leek and it was delicious. The pale ale was the perfect companion too. I like the details like the home made flavoured salts. Only one waiter on for most of my visit, so people were having to wait a wee while for him to do everything….i wasn’t in a hurry, so it didn’t matter to me. I would definitely return to sample the rest of the menu; very tempting.

I live locally, so have both eaten in and had takeaway from here several times. A year or so ago, the food was overpriced but just about worth it. It's got increasingly bad since then, going from hit and miss to consistently disappointing. Looking at the reviews I think they must give dine in customers the better food and takeaway get reheated old stuff. Latest takeaway I got from here the chips were somehow a mixture of mostly burnt and soggy, and so greasy. Cod wasn't much better either. I threw away the majority of it, but the bit I did eat left me feeling sick the rest of the night. Kept hoping they'll improve but finally going to give up after this. Unfortunately I didn't take a photo but trust me, looked nothing like the ones from these 5 star reviews on here..

Really nice cod loin in crispy-above-average batter (I'm not a batter fan, but I know a nice bit of batter when I see it), tasty bhuna sauce, ok'ish chips but chippy chips would definitely be an improvement. Bread roll was ok but could have come from a local supermarket - it was nothing special. The plates were too small, but then, the table was small too. Our waiter Dan did a good job and is worth a mention. Atmosphere 3* is above average but not 4*. Atmosphere is elusive - some places have it, others don't quite make it.

Myself, my husband and daughter ate here on 29th January, 2024, only people there. Tiny, thin fish in lots of batter and twice fried greasy chips, left a lot on plate, a glass of wine each £79 asked to take drinks upstairs as waiter had another job to go to and we hadn’t finished! Never again!

It is obvious why Malt and Anchor have won national awards, the quality of the ingredients and the cooking skill make this a cut above the rest. Crispy, light batter, perfect chips, technical perfection in a friendly laid back setting. Excellent all round. Worth making a diversion to experience.

Great restaurant with a nice decor, I like the rope chains on the ceiling. Very tasty fish and chips not greasy or soaked in oil the batter was crispy loved it. Would definitely recommend their more affordable takeaway option.

First time I've visited - ordered 2 loin cods and a regular and small chips as a takeaway. Food was divine, best cod I've had in ages, fresh, tasty and great quality. Lots of chips and again lovely quality and well cooked. Well presented with tartar sauce and fresh lemon included - highly recommend, we'll be back!

We came here for lunch on the 4th of October 2023. There were 4 of us. 3 of us ordered fish n chips (2 haddock’s and 1 cod) and one ordered a pie. The food was great as always. The onion rings ordered as an appetiser were super chunky though and looked too big for me to try. Otherwise the food was wonderful. The service was good as well.

The best Fish & Chips I've ever had. Nice crispy batter & lovely chips. The ham hock mushy peas were just delightful. Service was great the staff are very helpful & always smiling. Would definitely recommend this place.

I had the battered sausages and mash and my partner had the sea food salad ... Mine was bland with no taste , and my partner didn't really enjoys hers

Fish ok chips not good at all overrated

Very disappointed. I have read many of the rave reviews and cannot understand them. Ordered haddock and chips with onion rings for eating in. Had to send it all back as inedible by being totally overcooked. The replacement was not much better. The problem is overcooking the batter making it is so crisp you cannot cut it, it shatters. It's not what I'm expecting. The fish was as bad as the onions. Shan't ever return.

Visited for the first time today (Saturday lunch). Fish was very overcooked and for the price was shocking. There was only 1 staff member who I don’t think could care any less about you or your food. I guess when a place is empty at 1pm on a Saturday you gotta think twice.

It has possibly been recognized with an award for the best Fish & Chips, but my opinion is that the fish is correct and the preparation too, but not at all extraordinary. The place deserves a thorough cleaning, it is dirty and needs urgent renovation. On the other hand, the service was very attentive and pleasant. To go once but not return
