Malmaison Restaurant in Brighton and Hove

Sadly was left disappointed with our meal recently at the Grill. I was really looking forward to this night, the restaurant was completely empty, which didn’t create any kind of atmosphere. I ordered cauliflower wings which I really liked, and scallops, which were cold and over cooked. Service was very good.

Friend had a birthday celebration here and the staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Meal was excellent too and a great time was had by all.

We used to come here regularly to eat and haven’t been since July 2023 we went on 28 th October, the first thing I noticed was the restaurant staff, they used to have excellent staff nit sure what’s happened they must have left We were greeted by a chap who instantly turned his back on us no hello or greeting just name with his back to us , he eventually led us to our table merely walking and assuming we were following The prices were now ridiculous £39 for a small fillet steak and £19 for scallops starter, they threw in extras we didn’t order and charged us thanks for that We had a voucher they took 20. Invites to adjust the bill 2 courses with a cheap ish wine water no desert or coffee £180 ridiculous Just out priced themselves now Anyone staying here I’m sure will choose other nearby restaurants it’s a sham we used to like it but excessive costs and limited menu we won’t be back

The service was very poor even though the restaurant was empty. The waiter forgot part of our order. The drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and the main course took over 40mins!

Whilst the food was good. The service had a lot to de desired. We had the afternoon tea and the experience was mediocre. No one came to check whether we wanted another tea or coffee. So we lasted on the bottle of water. Neither waiter was very attentive and I had to ask for the bill.. wait again for the machine to pay and then was left holding the machine when it went through. Also being charged 10% service charge when there was none is a bit of a cheek. Over the last year we had two failures with trying to do this. 1. We booked and when we arrived we were told.. no afternoon teas were being done as there was a business conference 2. Another time we booked but had no confirmation of the booking. At least this booking went through but sorry to say, lack of service and attentiveness means we will not be coming back.

The restaurant as mentioned before, is very beautifully decorated with a 1970’s James Bond Vibe. We’ve been here on many occasions and it is a bit hit and miss as to which chef you get on the night. Tonight hot salmon and beetroot was a case of ‘where is the salmon?’ Minute flakes intertwined with copious amounts of bitter chicory and beetroot and literally a teaspoon of salmon. Total rip off here. The calamari one of our party ordered was a much smaller portion than he had on Father’s Day a few weeks ago. Our friends steak was well received, my partner’s burger was ok and my other friends linguini pasta was a bit lacking in the flavour department. My chicken although nice and moist lacked finesse in the plating .. After spending nearly £250 on the meal, we thought we would go back into the bar to order a cocktail and coffees to end the evening, but NO, the bar was only open to hotel residents. Very disappointing in a country where there is a cost of living crisis, but we were happy to spend our special occasion with our friends and was hoping to end the evening with coffees and cocktails… they were happy to turn us away where we could have spent at least another £60 (plus) in the bar. To end our special evening. Their loss! Such a disappointment.

My partner and I booked to have the afternoon tea here. Having eaten this before with no issues over allergens, we thought we’d come back. We were told we could not be offered the afternoon tea as a result of allergies and should have mentioned when booking. We hadn’t needed to do this previously, so it was clear the chef just couldn’t be bothered this time. We left and went to cafe rouge downstairs where it wasn’t a problem at all.

What a lovely setting. Beautiful decor. Food nice. Amazing 5* service from our waitress Tamsin who was bubbly, friendly and knowledgeable. On the negative side the gentleman who seemed to be managing the restaurant during the time of our visit was miserable, not welcoming and generally unfriendly which made for an unpleasant atmosphere at end of our meal. On arrival at (9.15pm on a Wednesday night when there was 1 other couple just completing their meal) Chez Mal Brighton the 1st thing he said was not " good evening welcome to Chez Mal,how can I help you?" It was " we close at 9.30pm". This was not very welcoming. Despite this we decided to try this restaurant. Having chosen a table, which was unlaid, purely for the view over the marina he made it obvious he was annoyed that he had to lay the table. Enter the lovely Tamsin. She welcomed us and proceeded to offer a service to be proud of. Well done Tamsin!. We would go back purely due to Tamsin and the food.

One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The service was unbelievably poor… they were late and blasé showing us to our table, then they proceeded to leave us for a whole 45 minutes before offering us any drinks (even water!!). When we finally did manage to flag someone down and order some cocktails, they took over 30 minutes to arrive as well! Please note that the restaurant and bar did not appear to be busy at all and it was a fairly quiet night. Food was also slow to come out and not tasty or worth the money - calamari was bland and tasteless, prawn cocktail had no sauce or seasoning (just plain cold prawns), burgers were so rare that one of my dining companions was put off eating it and left a mostly full plate. The mac n cheese tasted like bland cabbages and was very unappealing. Creme brûlées were burnt. After receiving the bill we were then left waiting for someone to come back for the payment for a further 30 minutes or so until we gave up and left the table to search for a member of staff. No staff were anywhere to be found so we had to stand in the entrance until someone finally appeared. We voiced our concerns, complained about our dining experience and expressed that we at least wanted the first round of drinks and service charge removed from the bill, the staff member (who we believe to be the manager) simply said “ok” and did not offer any type of apology or show the slightest hint of concern or interest. I honestly feel that we shouldn’t have paid anything for our meal, received compensation and, at the absolute minimum, an apology! Safe to say, none of us will be returning to dine here again.

The restaurant decor is lovely but what a disappointment with the food. The goats cheese salad was tiny consisting of crumbs of cheese and barely any butternut squash. The mushrooms on toast was huge Our main courses arrived without the chips we ordered. 2 portions arrived after our mains and the other 2 hadn't been ordered. The chocolate mousse was runny and the panacotta bland

First of all the wait staff were apologetic and really tried to make up for the issues by discounting our bill. However: - it was impossible to contact the restaurant prior to our visit - the menu on the day was different to our pre-ordered food, which caused confusion. - some dishes (Goats Cheese salad) were minuscule, and some (Chicken Karaage starter) were enormous! - items arrived cold - we were expected to share a small desert bowl of baby carrots and a small desert bowl of green beans between 8 roast dinners. But we inexplicably received 4 bowls of roast potatoes. - we asked for more veg, the chef refused and told us we had had already had 3 bowls! - several orders were not correct even though we ordered ahead. - some meals (due to mistakes) arrived after all of us had finished eating. - because of the veg issue 4 people had a roast dinner with no veg. - the gluten free roast dinner was a removal of the Yorkshire Pudding (and garnish for some reason) luckily I was the one of the ones who got the veg, otherwise I would have had three tiny slices of beef and some potatoes. You should always substitute, not just subtract. - the children’s options seemed to be the most problematic to get right, and some meals completely different to what was ordered. As we all know children just love it when you surprise them with something they don’t like! The food we did eat was nice, and the wait staff discounting the bill resulted in this being a 2 star rather than just one. The chef probably needs to be replaced, his/her food was good but the attitude towards customers is disgraceful.

What a wonderful and very long lunch. The food was amazing and we were so well looked after by "the man" George and his teal led by Courtney. Really recommend this little jewell in the marina.

Has lunch. Was busy with a large party. Darcie and Sarah were just a m a z I n g. They are an asset to Mal Maison. Food was brilliant. That sticky toffee pudding was the best I’ve ever had

Excellent location overlooking Brighton Marina and with service to match. The food was good, however, the menu choices were rather limited to say the least. Our table service was provided by Georgios who was very friendly and to a degree made up for what was lacking with this Restuarant's menu. If the Menu improves, we will definitely be returning and perhaps here they should look at the Chez Mal menu on the group's website where they offer 6 choices from the Meat & Grill section (which is seperate from the Main choice section). All in all, a very nice atmosphere and evening, with very attentive waiter/waitress service.

Absolutely gorgeous location looking over the marina and the sea. A really beautiful and unusual afternoon tea - instead of sandwiches, there's a prawn cocktail (fabulous with an unusual sauce), a beef wrap, a sausage roll and a little slider, all beautifully prepared, generously filled and totally scrummy. Scones, cream and jam all up to scratch then the pastries - stunningly miniature and delicious although we couldn't manage them all, they were cheerfully boxed up for us to take home by the wonderful staff who were friendly and attentive, they couldn't do more for us. This is my first visit here, and it won't be the last. Thoroughly recommend.

Celebramos nuestra fiesta de Navidad en Malmaison. Éramos un gran grupo de personas, siempre se pone un poco ruidoso, pero la sala de actos está perfectamente contenida y la comida era de buena calidad y la noche fue muy tranquila en general.Tienen un servicio de reserva en línea fácil para pre-ordenar comidas, tuvo un par de problemas técnicos pero nada importante. Fue un placer tratar con el equipo de Eventos y definitivamente lo recomendaría para las funciones.

Dinner with friends,4 of us at the table in a not full restaurant. Food was excellent,service indifferent- incorrect wine delivered,had to ask for water ice etc several times,meals did not all arrive at the same time( again,only 4 of us not a large group). Could and should have been much slicker,more professional service.

Excellent meal here last night. Very good service, I had steak and truffle chips. Very well cooked, we really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend.

Had a great meal here as part of the hotel deal. Noting to fault at all with the food or service it was all lovely. Only thing to pick about it, is that the menu prices do not include 20% VAT so it is added at the end. We didn't notice this on the menu when ordering so got a little sting when the bill came, never been anywhere that does it like that. Still an excellent meal.

We decided to try Chez Mal instead of our usual pub Sunday lunch and we’re glad we did. The service was incredibly slow as the staff seemed busy throughout a large serving area. However, they were all lovely, friendly and helpful.We loved the vast buffet of appetisers, which included hot soup as well as a decent selection of salads, cold meats and cheeses (including my favourite charcoal biscuits).We chose the veggie roast which was a roasted butternut squash, which was tasty although we did not think this offered the same value as the meat dishes. The only disappointment were the roast potatoes, which were crunchy and hard rather than crisp and fluffy. This two-course meal was £20, desserts were an extra £3.50 and wines were reasonably priced. (There’s a bottomless Prosecco deal for an extra £15). This was not a cheap lunch option but for just over £30 each we enjoyed a relaxing 2 and a half hours, in a comfortable spacious environment, marred only by a crying toddler.

This place is atrocious! The service is second rate what sort of question is ‘what brings you here today’ as a greeting & from there it was all downhill. Food grossly overpriced £10 for a burger ( no chips or salads ) . We asked for a starter which they brought with the main course. We didn’t even have the chance to complain as we had to join a queue of people all complaining. The hotel is in an isolated position & if the weather is poor you’re struggling to sleep.

My father in law has been visiting from Australia and we booked the restaurant for a farewell Sunday lunch.

We had a liquid brunch which was lovely - the food was great and the staff were very good at keeping our prosecco topped up! We had a great time and will definitely be back. Would 100% recommend!!

I took a friend and family to Sunday lunch after hearing positive feedback. The staff were pleasant when they came but the service was slow and there seemed no leadership we must have seen at least 4 different waiting staff and we had to ask for things at least twice . The food was acceptable but not great and the vegetables were cold. I paid the service charge as I did not want to make a fuss but on reflection I should have asked to have it removed. I don’t blame the waiting staff it is bad management that is letting the restaurant down.

Very Clean & large restaurant area, can be a little noisy, with larger parties, but great food & service, with better weather you can dine outside with views of the Marina.

Went for an evening meal after a walk around Brighton Marina. Very nice restaurant in a Hotel and overlooking the marina. Very helpful and friendly staff and very good food. Good choices in the menu including an excellent crab and scallops risotto, chicken kiev and burger. Also a good wine and drinks selection.

The place to go if you prefer a view lovely view of the Marina rather than extraordinary food.

We booked breakfast. We were kept waiting at the door to the Brasserie while the staff sorted out some orders. We had to ask twice for some coffee. The breakfast took a long time to arrive and was not hot, just about warm. The cold buffet was pathetic.

Top end breakfast experience on a beautiful morning at the Marina. The omelette, accessorised with spinach was perfect and a great start of the day. We were looked after by David who was both courteous, efficient and informative about what one might do in terms of the City's many attractions. In other words top banana

not a big menu - which we prefer as more likely to be freshly cooked. Decent wines, well prepared food, delicious. service a bit hit and miss at times though.

We had a wonderful evening meal at the malmaison restaurant, this is all thanks to our waiter Umberto and the kitchen staff. they were all very accommodating to my needs as i have a dairy allergy and they were fab.

Had two breakfasts there served by David. Coffee excellent, Continentlal bar had fruit, yogurt, toast, rolls, juice, and cereal with milk. For a few more euros, you could order individually prepared eggs, bacon etc. The porridge was wonderful.

We came for Afternoon Tea in Jan 2019, as I received a voucher for Xmas. It was a lovely experience which we couldn’t fault. We were greeted nicely when we arrived and the service remained to a high standard throughout.

The menu was good and the food excellent. However, service was poor. Getting the attention of the staff was not always easy and then we had to wait a long time before ‘service was delivered’. It really let down what would have been a super occasion.

To celebrate my husbands birthday and mothering Sunday 4 us of had dinner and it was horrible. My starter wasn't warm (scotch egg) and husbands calamari was all batter no fish. Of the mains 1 of 4 were good. My burger had nice flavor but the bun was hard and I could tell the chips were out on old bag in the freezer. The one good meal was the Filet that my father in law ordered. My chocolate tart for desert was maybe the saving grace as that wasn't half bad. Aside for the food we had to ask 3 times to get tap water, 2 times about the drinks we ordered, and 2 times for the bill. The service was was also so soo so slow. Took 15-20 minutes to get drinks and it wasn't even busy. Would not return or recommend.

I was fortunate enough to have the joy of a Mal Bottomless Prosecco Bruch on Saturday with three girlfriends. What a fabulous way to while away lunchtime on Saturday!

Bottomless Prosecco brunch. What an amazing place to spend a Saturday afternoon eating great food, drinking my favourite tipple with a stunning waterfront view.

On arrival we were treated by a lovely receptionist who helped us check in, allowing us to do so 30 mins early. Mentioning it was birthday she wished us a lovely day. We then booked a table for dinner. The receptionist had passed on that it was my birthday and we were then given complementary Prosecco with dinner.

While staying at the Malmaison hotel we booked the 'weekender' package which included a 3 course dinner at the Chez Mal. The food was delicious. Service was also very good.

Loved this place, modern vibrant atmosphere, with classy surrou dings. Staff were very attentive. Very tasty food in the restaurant with and more great service. Good value will definitely be returning.

Great girly get together with prosecco in the swish bar and attentive staff. Followed by the fixed price menu which had a good choice, all well presented and tasty. Once again fab service and great ambiance in the restaurant overlooking the marina.

Location was great, weather was great. Everything lined up as being great but sadly not much else was.

The chief reason to eat at Brighton Marina is surely to enjoy a view of the water and the boats. Chez Mal, the restaurant at the Hotel Malmaison (formerly Hotel Seattle), has done everything possible to obscure that view - dark purple walls, plenty of black, hangings apparently knitted from chainmail. The view, on a dull February day, was of a terrace seemingly built of concrete and furnished with concrete-looking blocks (possibly jollied up with colourful cushions in summer - who knows? (we shan't be going back. ) The area of the restaurant which does offer a view of the Marina was closed for cleaning, but my husband begged a table by the window there, so we at least escaped the encircling gloom of the main restaurant.

We stayed at Malmaison Sunday through Monday for a short break away. The room deal we had included two courses from the set winter dinner menu and these were scrumptious. We purchased desserts as extras they were so delicious. We had pre-booked a cooked breakfast (this was cheaper online) and received fabulous friendly service from David and Jodie. We chose the full cooked breakfast which was accompanied by plenty of toast and coffee. Also included was a selection from the continental breakfast buffet enabling me to have fresh fruit and my husband to have a couple of pastries. We returned to the bar later in the afternoon for afternoon tea with prosecco which had been a Christmas gift. This had a couple of unique twists to it, instead of the usual crustless sandwiches we were served up mini bagels with salmon and cream cheese and mini chicken fillet burgers. The scones were pleasantly crunchy on the outside and delightfully soft on the inside, and there were so many cakes to die for (in particular the chocolate and salted caramel brownie). Another twist was the blueberry smoothie. Every meal was delicious and well prepared and a little different and the service was brilliant.

been here for Sunday lunch numerous times/ and also for other lunches and dinners / Staff always lovely / Sunday lunch : we get there early so that the help yourself starters always look great / roast beef is great and the vegetables not over cooked / not sure where some of the complaints here in Trip Advisor are coming from... No busy restaurant on a sunday is going to provide fine dining ..and they are not charging fine dining prices... we are happy and will be going back again with friends ....

My daughter had gone on about this restaurant and how you can never get a table, so I was really looking forward to it. Such a disappointment! Whole place needed a good clean. Dirty glass doors on arrival was the first thing I noticed. Not the best welcome! It was not overly busy in the restaurant but there were two large parties in the side rooms. Clearly not enough staff on and no one seemed to be in authority, so it was all a bit of a shambles! The two parties were both complaining and the waiting staff were left to deal with the situation. We waited more than half an hour for drinks so eventually I went to the bar to collect them. Could then see why the drinks had not been served. No one behind the bar and the bar was completely covered with glasses so no room to put any poured drinks for customers! The starters buffet was almost empty. People were complaining. At one point all the dirty plates from one of the tables was just piled up on another table in the restaurant in the middle of the section where people were eating. Not very pleasant at all. Anyway, all in all not the best experience. Maybe an off day. Maybe lack of staff training. Maybe lack of manager on duty. Maybe all three!

Visited this restaurant for a family Birthday. Had to eat early in the evening as we where due somewhere else. I enjoyed the Cocktail Bar but the restaurant was under whelming. The starter was reasonable but the main course was really disappointing. I had braised shin of beef pie which was just a huge lump of chewy beef inside a stiff pastry and a little piped on mash but nothing else with no vegetables. Then the desert was even worse. A sickly dark chocolate mouse with solid hard lumps of honeycombe on top. Unfortunately we wont be going back as we felt it was nothing special.

We dined here whilst staying at the hotel on a Saturday night as part of a gift voucher we were given which included a three course dinner and a bottle of champagne for the room. We didn't get the opportunity to open the champagne in our room so we asked if we could take it to dinner with us, we were told that this wouldn't be a problem.... So we did. Unfortunately, we had to ask for champagne glasses to be brought to the table to use rather than wine glasses as this wasn't picked up by the waiting staff when we arrived at our table. I also had to open the bottle myself as there was no effort made by the waiting staff to do so for us even though we had asked if the ice bucket could be topped up which should have put the bottle on their radar when we sat down. We both ordered the poached egg and mushroom starter and I found mine to be quite bland if I'm honest. For my main I ordered the corn chowder with mussels and shrimps in and my fiance had the sea bass. Maybe I'm being a bit picky but when I've had chowder like this in other restaurants it normally gets accompanied by a bowl of some description to deposit discarded mussel shells and shrimp heads in. On this occasion it didn't.

A brilliant evening in this restaurant service and food was great ,well looking after by Simon And Laura ,we had a pre'drink in the coctalil bar where Patrick And Cameron serving that night thank you to all the others staff for having made our experience very special

There is a huge choice of places to eat in the marina. We have been in most of them due to living in the marina. Sadly our visit tonight ended up in us walking out due to waiting 25 minutes for desserts. Normally we wouldn't mind but one of the mains wasnt very hot, the tap water I asked for at the time of ordering didn't arrive till after I had eaten my main course. Portions are small and over priced ie £13 for a hallomi salad, thankfully I had ordered a side order of fries which took it to £18 had it been served on a dinner plate and not a bowl it would still have had plenty of room for another side order. Sadly won't be returning.

Sunday lunch here is delicious and very filling. Great friendly staff and excellent value for money. Will not hesitate to return here.

We decided to eat in the restaurant as we were staying locally and it had been recommended to us by our hosts. We had three courses, game croquettes for starters, my wife had a roast fillet of cod, i had a haddock fishcake and for dessert we both had baked chocolate and peanut butter puddings with salted caramel ice cream. All were cooked and tasted lovely. Staff were very polite and we did not have to wait long for our meals. Would definitely visit again.

We had a Christmas party here that was a complete shambles, Our food arrived 2hours late!

Had the pleasure of visiting Malmaison for the first time for a work Christmas party and it did not disappoint. Pre-party drinks hit the spot as well as the dinner and atmosphere was a real blast!

I was staying here overnight and have always loved Malmaison. This one is different. The public areas are dark, cold and dingey. The only reason I ate here on this evening was that the weather was atrocious but I figured it will still be a really good meal.

Six of us went to Malmaison restaurant yesterday a Sunday. We were looked after by Clarissa who was the perfect host friendly and professional we didn't have to wait for anything. She made the whole experience amazing. The food is fabulous and we went for the bottomless prosecco option what a bargain. This place is well worth a visit only don't eat too much before you go as there is so much

We had dinner here as part of our overnight stay package-luckily the reception staff had given us a leaflet explaining that we had an allowance towards the a la carte menu, as no one seemed inclined to show us the fixed price menu! We had booked for 8.30 but did not get shown to our table until 30 minutes later-however we were quite happy as we were given a free bottle of bubbly to compensate for this and we were a captive audience anyway!

Went for dinner with a friend, not bad food but not excellent either. Very dark environment and lacked atmosphere. A lot of staff and I like to get asked if all is ok once or twice during my meal but not by two staff for every course. A nice touch was to offer a free drink because the desserts took a while but we opted for coffee as we had to drive. We had a 20% discount on food(when I reminded them), so all in all a reasonably priced meal even with 12.5% service added. Not somewhere I would necessarily return to.

There is a set price of £19.95 on a Sunday and this includes the lovely buffet starter table and then a choice of either a Brunch, a main Course or the Sunday roast.

Stayed in many Malmaison hotels this was the first time we had dinner, we were rather disappointed with the quality of the meal it just didn't match up to the hotels other standards.

Visited as part of hotel package, limited choice of options, portion sizes are very large with quality being OK, but nothing outstanding.

Beautiful weather so we ate outside, food was amazing.

Thanks for a very nice evening, my wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Food is on the very high end of English/International kitchen with some innovative vegetarian alternatives. Especially the personal attention we got from a waitress called Cara was outstanding. She is very witty and she could give the service also in fluent French, fun for us living in Geneva.

I was taken here by friends in June and was so impressed that I had to bring my husband, who is wheelchair bound, here later in the week. What a perfect choice.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for his birthday and part of the stay was a dinner in the restaurant. The staff were amazing. Even down to giving us a glass of champagne and making up a birthday dessert for him. Honestly I can’t recommend it enough. The cocktails in the bar were also very cheap and tasted amazing!

Having enjoyed the Malmaison Brasserie in several other cities, we were looking forward to Malmaison Brighton.

I was very disappointed with the quality of the food. The mackerel starter was lovely but the tomatoes it was served on were old so very soft. The chicken liver mousse was a tiny portion hidden under a big layer of something akin to aspic jelly. The ribs for mains were supermarket quality at best and burned at one end, the sweet potatoes overcooked and a bit slimy. One of our party returned her pasta dish as it was lukewarm, it was returned within minutes so must have been reheated in a microwave. The sausage/stew dish was a bland bowl of beans in a broth with 4 pieces of very hard sausage. We were a large party and didn't want to complain as we didn't want to spoil what should have been a lovely celebration meal, but I did notice lots of our group had left a lot of food on their plates. The venue would be lovely when the weather is good. The service was hit and miss with some staff being really on the ball but we spent a lot of time just waiting. I therefore would not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning.

My partner and I had a beautiful Sunday lunch here on the deck overlooking the boats. The young dark haired waitress, whose name we didn’t catch, was superb. Very attentive and very good at her job. We both had the “chefs table” buffet with roast beef for mains. Very good selection of items on the buffet, all delicious..! It’s fair to say our eyes were bigger than our bellies. Exceptionally good value . Would definitely recommend this for a relaxing lunch.
