A great traditional pub 4 miles south of the A303 in a small hamlet. Food menu very good, served fresh and hot, reasonable prices and a wide range of beers. Friendly service and I would fully recommend it. We will certainly visit again when next near the area.

Had a lovely family evening meal. Service was excellent. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent and choice varied. We were dining late so by the time we ordered some of the specials had gone. Staff tried to be as flexible as possible to meet our needs including adding extra desert choices. Would recommend this pub for friendliness and good quality food.

First return visit to the Malet for over a year - it has not changed - still reasonably priced meals, excellent staff and service, and food that definitely leaves you with the feeling of wishing to return - although full to the brim!! We have to say in today's climate, the Malet, Newton Tony definitely remains our Number 1 choice.

We prebooked the Malet Arms for Sunday lunch and went with our dogs. We were seated in the bar, which is dog friendly, and there is plenty of outside seating if that suits you better. We had a salt and pepper squid to share, then a couple of excellent fried hake and chips, a Bob burger (brie, onion rings and bacon jam) and a crispy roast belly pork. All were served with hand cut chips. Even home made tartare sauce! Thankfully, we had room for puddings and had a sweet treacle pud, a chocolate brownie and a crispy chocolate pudding. Great portion sizes and all cooked beautifully. Good ales and lovely staff. What an excellent pub.

It is without doubt my favourite pub, the owners and staff are so friendly and accommodating and the food is outstanding. It is a wonderful country pub without any distracting music or fruit machines or quiz machines and even better, poor mobile phone signal so you rarely witness zombies just staring blankly at social media on their phones, instead people are genuinely social with each other, if you have kids and want them to be social, take them here! The place has an ever changing menu which is written on blackboards in both the pub and restaurant areas of the pub and often has seasonal fare so we are always spoilt for choice and never disappointed and there is always something new to try. The main blackboards have starters and mains listed and a separate, portable board has the puddings and cheese list. Today I opted to have venison with a peppercorn sauce, salad and fries. The venison was cooked to perfection and was absolutely delicious. This was followed up with a cherry and almond tart, the best description I can come up with is it was like a very sophisticated Bakewell tart, again, delicious. The portion sizes are generous so it can be a challenge to manage three courses but it is worth it if you can, you won't be disappointed.

The Mallet Arms is a beautiful country pub in the small village of Newton Tony in Wiltshire. There are several country walks around that have to end with a meal in this amazing pub. The food here is incredible, better than anywhere you’ll find in Salisbury or the local area. The menu is diverse and although it has all the classics like fish and chips, it also has some dishes that you wouldn’t expect to find in a rural pub. The Mallet is well known for its Mallet burger which lives up to the hype, but the stand out for me was the venison. Absolutely worth a visit, but make sure to book as it gets busy.

On arrival we were kept waiting before being showed to our table, there was no Alcohol free options for drivers, this shows a lack of foresight in the current climate. The food was ok, classic pub food, set up good (went when was still outside and wasn’t cold). We ordered mains (fish and chips) wine, gin and was reasonably priced. My problem lies that we clearly were not ‘villagers’ and was constantly being asked if ‘they could get us anything else’. The rest of the pub seemed well known and nobody else was being asked the same. We all thought it seemed like they wanted us to get going and make space. And we spent a fair bit and was not nursing drinks! Which was a shame for us. There was not anyone waiting for tables either.

Found the Malet Arms on TripAdvisor for lunch before a trip to Stonehenge. All the previous reviews were very positive. We were NOT disappointed. The food at this pub is delightful - freshly prepared and nicely presented. We had the beer-battered hake and chips (rarely found but I think that hake is the perfect white fish for fish & chips) and the special Malet burger and chips. The burger was home-made and is cooked to preference topped with a tasty blue cheese and bacon sauce. The chips were the nicest - crispy, tasty wedges and the salad accompaniment was delicious. Compliments to the chef and well done to the landlord and landlady for the convivial attentiveness. It's a pity that we don't live nearby, otherwise we would be visiting on a regular basis.

The pub was recommended to us and we could see why as we loved the pub. A beautiful and charming building with a lovely choice of food presented on chalk boards. Our choices were absolutely delicious, the best burger that my husband had tried and he’s sampled many along with a top notch vegetarian ravioli dish for myself. The chef is obviously accomplished and produces food worth driving for. The let down was the unfriendly young lady serving at the bar and delivering the dishes. No smile, didn’t ask how everything was, when we sent compliments to the chef, the reply was ‘ok I’ll tell him’ and when she collected our plates she didn’t mention desserts which we’d have loved and unfortunately we hadn’t seen the little board listing them until we left. We loved this place and the food but can’t understand why the service isn’t better. Maybe she doesn’t want to work there but needs the job and hence elbows on the bar texting instead of greeting customers. Would return for the food and charm of the pub in the hope of a smile or hello next time

This pub always had good atmosphere, but the small wrinkles have been ironed out. Major plusses (for me anyway) are NO wifi, NO music, NO old ashtrays with cigarette butts sitting in water, and since Alice arrived NO excessive waiting for food, and NO disturbance from a stream of staff asking if you are enjoying your meal. This is clearly a place with a personal touch - no menus, merely a blackboard, and a real fire in the winter, while the outside terrace for the summer is much better presented. Icing on the cake is a burger with real melted cheese on a very hot plate, with no choice between unnecessarily triple cooked chips and skinny fries - you take what you're given, and very nice they are too. The only minor and irritating concession to modernity is that they won't cook your burger less than medium. And no, it isn't against the law to do so!

They have a good selection of English Ales as well as the usual European fizzy pop, nothing against it, but when you have Butcombe ale on offer....! Perhaps more suited to the winter months, there is a great cosy feel to this pub. Consistently good and varied menu, a lovely ambience in the main bar, open fire (when necessary!), excellent beers, friendly staff, lots of parking, in a rural village setting. Very minor downsides, in the interests of fairness - the "overflow" dining room is a bit lacking in atmosphere; outside areas is slightly limited; and bar service is sometimes slow. I go about once every two months and the experience is consistently uplifting. And my friends in the locality all agree, borne from their own experience.

Small and picturesque country restaurant. Service is polite and attentive. Food is great, not a big choice, but it is freshly cooked, so it is a good option, even if it requires some waiting (20 to 30 min). If in your way do not hesitate to entry.

The Malet Arms is in a very attractive location beside a stream in a small Wiltshire village. The interesting and changing menu is displayed on blackboards around the log-burning fire. Good disabled access. There is a large main restaurant area as well as a cosy, beamed bar and outside areas . Wide range of local and artisan beers.

This is my favourite pub near Salisbury. Consistently good quality food with a delightful menu. Beer also very good and well kept. Staff courteous and cheerful too. Nothing to dislike apart from being the wrong side of Salisbury for me!

This is a real gem. Noel, the landlord, could not have been more welcoming. The beers justified the glowing praise in the Good Pub guide, and as we sat outside with our drinks, we felt we had moved back 30 years. The menu is great, too, and we shall return!

Ordered a rib eye steak and salad, not too demanding you would have thought but the steak was so tough it was virtually inedible. Didn't want to embarrass my hosts by complaining at the time but it really was unacceptable.

Group of six of us visited for dinner, were looking forward to it as had previously heard good things about the pub. Staff were friendly but service was slow, although the pub wasn't busy. Food was ok but nothing special. The waitress knocked a glass of red wine over one of our party, an honest mistake which was apologised for and another glass of wine offered, which we declined. However, when we got home we realised they had charged us for the glass of wine they knocked over, which was poor. Asked for a jug of water which arrived but no glasses were supplied. No finger bowl for the person who ordered whole prawns. A pretty average experience, there are far better places to eat nearby.

Stopped here for lunch on a Wednesday to find a lovely roaring fire, good selection of beers and a warm welcome from the barmaid. We were stopping on the way to Salisbury and chose this from the Good Pub Guide (2015 version) and so glad we did. Had a lovely meal with meals including cajun chicken, with salad and fries and puddings including cherry and almond tart. All home made and very well cooked and if I am ever passing this way again I will be coming back for more. All in cost for 2 mains, 2 puds and a couple of drinks ~£50.

After a rainy visit to Stonehenge, we arrive at Malet Arms in Salisbury, England. We were wet, and cold as we entered the 400 year-old pub, and were greeted by Noel Cardew, the owner of the lovely pub. He welcomed us, made us comfortable, offered a variety of ales, and allowed us to warm ourselves by the fire, as well as dry our shoes there. He had been informed of three of our boys life-threatening food allergies before we arrived, and was able to accommodate some of our needs, but two of the boys could only order fries safely, but that was fine with us. Most important to us is safe meals, and a willingness to listen to our concerns, and be honest with what an eating establishment can do or not do, and Noel certainly lived up to that.

Went to visit on a quiet Wednesday evening, however I think we got the busiest evening of the week. We could barely get into the bar area, however fortunately the large group went through to the back room for a meal, leaving a few tables free in the front area. All credit to the Chef, who was obviously busy with the large group, that we could turn up and eat a lovely meal.

A friend was dying to try the Malet burger so I took him there on a quiet Monday. The pub is traditional as they come, great ales, huge menu on blackboards, cosy surroundings and proper pub feel

The menu is displayed on blackboards over the log burning stove and carries a wide range of interesting dishes, including veggie, to cater for all tastes. I had the braised pigs' cheeks as an experiment - and it was delicious. It is a free house and most of the beers and lagers are from local breweries. There is also an interesting range of wines, sold by the glass, for connoisseurs. There is a choice of dining from the busy bar area to the popular, larger restaurant (great for kids) or the cosy snug. The owners are very welcoming, the service was quick and the food excellent. There is good disabled access.
