Maki and Ramen in Edinburgh, City of

While the price is reasonable for Edinburgh, those familiar with authentic Japanese ramen may find it underwhelming, as it tastes more like regular noodles.

Ramen, the perfect rainy day comfort food. Homey and welcoming atmosphere and staff. Warm lighting, dark varnished wooden panels, walls of encouraging sticky notes and drawings of inside jokes, what more could one wish for? Well, maybe perhaps at a restaurant, good food. I had the spicy tonkotsu, which wasnt at all. (I get the need to acclimatize to local taste buds, so this I forgive wholeheartedly.) Which came in a fairly big portion, but something felt off about the broth. It was... painfully average, and even resembled the storebought broth i had (you just have to trust me in this. For instance packet miso and handmade miso are worlds apart, and this should apply to ramen broths!). Not utterly inedible, but nor was it mind blowingly good. Yes, all (most) of the toppings that are supposed to be there are! Except corn, and perhaps bamboo shoots(forgive if I am wrong, but the sad amount of seeweed distracted me). But this only left me full and almost satiated. Ok effort at ramen, but booming in business. In terms of sheer number of outlets, big boss you, fellow Singaporean, seem to have triumphed. With mediocre ramen no less. I extend the warmest regards as a fellow person who grew up in the material-driven society that is our home country. Parading as a ramen conoisseur while maximizing profits, our lord and Saviour LKY would be crying tears of joy.

Cute post it notes around the place, food was alright but not all that great compared to more authentic places.

Miso soup curdled and very tiny portion, edamame tasteless as no coating apart from a bit of salt, gyoza tiny but tasty, with tiny amount of sauce. No soy sauce or any condiments on the tables, wee stools comfy but you won’t be sitting there long. Service is good, but seemed like u were rushed out of the establishment with them taking away plates literally as soon as you put it down. Won’t be back :(

Japanese restaurant in the university area of ​​Edinburgh. It has a place decorated with diners' post-its! The food is good and the staff is friendly.

More of fusion Japanese but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Careful as the “Hell Ramen” deserves its name.

It was a cold day, so I wanted to eat some warm soup, so I went there, but it was just as delicious as what I get in Korea, and the portion size was just right! However, because the overall cost of living in the UK is high... the price is about 14 pounds (26,000 won in Korean won).

Everything was great, and definitely will try again.

soft shell crab roll lacked flavour, with hardly any sauce. disappointing quality of ingredients used for the high price and popularity of maki & ramen. rice also seemed to be breaking apart. prawn tempura had a dense batter rather than a light and airy one. will not be back unfortunately

I highly recommend the branch in EH3 9QG instead. The taste is completely different. At this location, the takoyaki batter is too runny and the outer layer isn’t crispy, the ramen broth lacks flavor, and the fried chicken doesn’t seem fresh. I’m not sure why there’s such a big difference between branches of the same brand.

It was arriving in Edinburgh and entering without having read any reviews, but the truth is that it was a success. Fast and very friendly service at all times. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. I would highlight the excellent quality-price ratio.

Decent ramen joint at a reasonable price Stopped in here for a solo lunch and had the tantan ramen, 7/10. The noodles were good, nice springy texture. Soup had a good depth of flavour and left me feeling full and satisfied.

I ordered fried chicken tempura and Susi platter. The starter portion size was quite good. Overall food taste was really good. I am a sushi fan and they didn't disappoint at all. Staffs were very welcoming and service was super fast. Price was okay. Recommended.

I had the best bowl of steak tataki ramen here at Maki & Ramen, more importantly, it is halal💯 The noodle itself was not too thick or too thin, just right. The broth was rich in flavor and the beef just melts in your mouth. I enjoyed every slurped. Reasonably priced as well. The place was quite small but very cozy. Excellent service. Will definitely come back

I'm not one to usually leave reviews, but our server Hannah was so sweet and went above and beyond to make our visit great! Checked with the kitchen about our party's allergies and was very knowledgeable about the menu. Will definitely be back to try out some more recommendations!

I had the katsu curry and it was amazing. Highly recommend. The ice cream mochi was nice but I thought it was a bit overpriced for what you get.

cute ramen shop in central Edinburgh. Great service. The steak ramen was unbelievable, perfectly cooked, tender peppered slices in a rich savoury broth (I just wish there was slightly more meat). Prices are pretty reasonable. Bonus, the halal dishes on the menu are clearly marked

First time trying Maki & Ramen. For being a sort of chain restaurant, the quality and taste of the food is good. I opted for the teriyaki chicken and katsu curry. Both were very nice. Particularly the teriyaki sauce. However, the katsu curry had a bad sauce to rice ratio. Either put less rice or more sauce. Easy fix. The atmosphere is nice. Service is great. Price is good. It's perfect for a quick bite to eat after work.

Dined in tonight and witnessed one of the waitresses scream at the other in front of customers! Honestly felt TOTALLY uncomfortable to witness it, felt really bad for the girl being screamed at she looked on the verge of tears! Food was good though.

All the meals were very tasty and the waitress was friendly.

The very friendly staff told us that the place was full. We waited outside for a bit and within 20 minutes they seated us, the ramen was delicious, served quickly. 4 stars for the environment because it is small and therefore very warm, but well-kept and cute. Mouthwatering vegan options.

When I asked how long my order would take, they said 5 minutes, but after waiting, they kept pushing it back by another 5-10 minutes. This happened multiple times, and eventually, they just said there was a problem without any clear explanation. The service was frustratingly slow, and the lack of professionalism made it worse. I strongly suggest not choosing this restaurant."

The food was excellent as always, with the tonkotsu broth being rich and flavourful, and the gyoza being crispy and delicious. Our lovely server Mahira was very attentive throughout the meal, and helped us promptly whenever we needed it.

I came for dinner with two of my friends. I ordered chicken ramen, and the soup was so delicious. no wonder people were queueing for this restaurant. the waiters were nice, they also asked if we need special dietary request (which I do, because I am a Muslim). there's some menus that halal, so don't worry. the portion was so big, so for the small eaters, i recommend you to share it with your friends. Definitely will come again as one of the options for my comfort food in Edinburgh. (too bad i didn't take any picture😔)

After we had already been to Maki & Ramen on Leith Street and enjoyed the food there so much, we wanted to eat at this location again. Even though the menu was the same, we were surprised at how different everything tasted. Unfortunately, the food wasn't equally good and it's a bit of a shame that the branches don't seem to be consistent in their quality. The service was still great and the food tasted good (just not as good as at the other location).

Food was beautiful, we both were looking for a great ramen place for 2 years and we finally found it! They were from California and were so picky about their ramen, but finally found it. Almost empty plates since we were so full 😄 Edit: Went back again and just as happy as the first time. Same service and couple more pictures 💜

First thing first, it's Halal (chicken and beef). Big portion of Steak ramen.

Appreciated the halal beef tataki ramen option! 😊 On top of all it was super delicious too. Matcha creme brulée was also great. I like how they let customers draw/write on post-it note and let us stick it on the board. Definitely fun while waiting for the food to be served.

Fantastic variety of vegan options!

I'm never ever coming again. Even the £1 ramens from local convenience stores tastes better than the chicken karaage ramen I had. All bland noodles with bland spinachy-mouldy flavour broth was making me regret every bite. Only thing I liked was the spicy(wasn't spicy) chicken teriyaki/takoyaki(I guess) as side. Portion size of ramen was altho vast. Interior nice but they could manage their seating more efficiently, because we didn't find it quite comfortable to sit so close with other people in a crowdy loud atmosphere. The 10% service charge wasn't deserved as service wasn't fast and friendly to live up the expectation from such a popular place with Japanese pride. It really disappoints me to leave so many complaints, as I was looking forward to making some good memories in such a hyped place, not some memories that I never wanna remind myself and sigh about.

I was recommended this place as as somewhere where there were gluten free options for ramen and sushi. If you are looking for either of those I would recommend going elsewhere. I was unable to get the majority of the dishes on the menu and was informed that the majority of the food contained gluten and was prepped with gluten containing ingredients. I had to speak to two different people before I was finally able to sort out what I could eat, and that boiled down to sashimi and about two of the rolls (salmon avocado and rainbow roll). I ordered the rainbow roll and proceeded to sit at the table without a glass of water for about 30 minutes while everyone around me was served both sushi, ramen and water. I was really unhappy with the entire experience and left hungry. The sushi was good, the fish was fresh but celiacs and gluten intolerants stay away!

Sadly chef doesn’t know what “ vegan ” means at this particular location. When I received a ramen with egg, I asked for a new one without it, however the server just went away, took the egg off and brought the same food out again. When I asked for a brand new soup, the lady went away without a word, so I followed a minute later to make sure this is getting sorted, only to see her stood by the kitchen window going back and forth with the chef, who didn’t seem willing to understand the issue, still holding the ramen in her hands. Once I saw the reluctance on the kitchen’s side and the staff not knowing how to deal with this kind of situation, we decided to leave. By the time I’d receive a new soup, my mother’s soup would get cold and I just simply didn’t want to risk any more issues with my food and wasn’t willing to wait that much longer anyway, as the service was already kind of slow, which was easily made up by good food if that was what I would receive. No apology given, my mom ended up apologising to them, as they showed a clear dislike in our simple requirement. The only thing we were told was, that the order was input correctly by the server. Won’t be returning to this location, however I’m a bit sad about the experience as I’ve always praised and loved the Maki&Ramen chain, and I do frequent their other Edinburgh locations and always enjoy the food and service very much. My mom has a slight allergy, I don’t, but I simply highly dislike eggs. This could easily be a way bigger issue if someone is genuinely highly allergic. Their glasses were also not exactly clean, but that happens I guess.. Sadly the the whole experience just made our day a bit bitter tasting. Cute interior though..

I believe this has moved just around the corner, as it was on West Richmond Street. Fantastic restaurant. Small/cosy, no reservations is slightly problematic, but worth making an effort to come at the quiet times, or hang around for a table. The food is delicious, gyoza and katsu curry in particular. Very friendly, and a lively buzz make it ideal for a quick and tasty food experience.

Great Green Dragon Roll and Black Garlic Tonkatsu

The facility and service are extremely good and the staff are very friendly! The karaage was also very good, but the texture itself wasn't quite as good and the noodles tasted very hard. In addition, the soup wasn't to my taste either. Still a very good restaurant where you can eat well.

Felt like a local ramen-ya in Tokyo - the noodles were awesome, with great “ha-gotae”. Excellent.

Maki & Ramen offers an excellent variety of ramen. I tried the tonkotsu ramen and it was delicious, well served and very filling. Accompanied by a rice tea, it was the perfect dinner after a day of exploring Edinburgh. Highly recommended!

Should be just called Maki, since their Ramen taste bland AF. We had the tonkotsu and black garlic tonkotsu. The flavour doesn’t stick to the noodles so you’re basically eating noodles straight from the water pot. The broth was also mediocre, can’t tell that it was cooked for 8 hours. Can probably make something similar using just a bouillon cube from Tesco. The sushi was quite good though, so one star for that. The service was also OK, but not special enough to warrant a 10% service fee that they throw in your bill. Overall I’d recommend the sushi but man, I really regret getting extra flavorless noodles for another 3 quid. Eating it felt like a chore.
