Maki and Ramen in Edinburgh, City of

After we had already been to Maki & Ramen on Leith Street and enjoyed the food there so much, we wanted to eat at this location again. Even though the menu was the same, we were surprised at how different everything tasted. Unfortunately, the food wasn't equally good and it's a bit of a shame that the branches don't seem to be consistent in their quality. The service was still great and the food tasted good (just not as good as at the other location).

Food was beautiful, we both were looking for a great ramen place for 2 years and we finally found it! They were from California and were so picky about their ramen, but finally found it. Almost empty plates since we were so full 😄 Edit: Went back again and just as happy as the first time. Same service and couple more pictures 💜

First thing first, it's Halal (chicken and beef). Big portion of Steak ramen.

Appreciated the halal beef tataki ramen option! 😊 On top of all it was super delicious too. Matcha creme brulée was also great. I like how they let customers draw/write on post-it note and let us stick it on the board. Definitely fun while waiting for the food to be served.

The first meal after arriving in Edinburgh, the warm noodle soup is really suitable for autumn☺️Except for the crowded seats, the tonkotsu noodles, hell ramen and sushi I ordered were all very good👍🏻

All the meals were very tasty and the waitress was friendly.

As ever with Maki and Ranen, the food is quick and blummin tasty! Highly recommend.

I had to queue outside for a long time because the place is small but it was worth it. The girls who served me were very friendly at all times and the food is delicious.

Fantastic variety of vegan options!

I'm never ever coming again. Even the £1 ramens from local convenience stores tastes better than the chicken karaage ramen I had. All bland noodles with bland spinachy-mouldy flavour broth was making me regret every bite. Only thing I liked was the spicy(wasn't spicy) chicken teriyaki/takoyaki(I guess) as side. Portion size of ramen was altho vast. Interior nice but they could manage their seating more efficiently, because we didn't find it quite comfortable to sit so close with other people in a crowdy loud atmosphere. The 10% service charge wasn't deserved as service wasn't fast and friendly to live up the expectation from such a popular place with Japanese pride. It really disappoints me to leave so many complaints, as I was looking forward to making some good memories in such a hyped place, not some memories that I never wanna remind myself and sigh about.

Ramen is better than rice. Portions are huge.

great atmosphere, so far the best of all the Maki & Ramen ones i’ve been to as it’s cozy :) The service was really kind and helpful, and the food came at the same time for all of us and was delicious! Great concept with allowing customers to add their own post it notes.

I was recommended this place as as somewhere where there were gluten free options for ramen and sushi. If you are looking for either of those I would recommend going elsewhere. I was unable to get the majority of the dishes on the menu and was informed that the majority of the food contained gluten and was prepped with gluten containing ingredients. I had to speak to two different people before I was finally able to sort out what I could eat, and that boiled down to sashimi and about two of the rolls (salmon avocado and rainbow roll). I ordered the rainbow roll and proceeded to sit at the table without a glass of water for about 30 minutes while everyone around me was served both sushi, ramen and water. I was really unhappy with the entire experience and left hungry. The sushi was good, the fish was fresh but celiacs and gluten intolerants stay away!

Sadly chef doesn’t know what “ vegan ” means at this particular location. When I received a ramen with egg, I asked for a new one without it, however the server just went away, took the egg off and brought the same food out again. When I asked for a brand new soup, the lady went away without a word, so I followed a minute later to make sure this is getting sorted, only to see her stood by the kitchen window going back and forth with the chef, who didn’t seem willing to understand the issue, still holding the ramen in her hands. Once I saw the reluctance on the kitchen’s side and the staff not knowing how to deal with this kind of situation, we decided to leave. By the time I’d receive a new soup, my mother’s soup would get cold and I just simply didn’t want to risk any more issues with my food and wasn’t willing to wait that much longer anyway, as the service was already kind of slow, which was easily made up by good food if that was what I would receive. No apology given, my mom ended up apologising to them, as they showed a clear dislike in our simple requirement. The only thing we were told was, that the order was input correctly by the server. Won’t be returning to this location, however I’m a bit sad about the experience as I’ve always praised and loved the Maki&Ramen chain, and I do frequent their other Edinburgh locations and always enjoy the food and service very much. My mom has a slight allergy, I don’t, but I simply highly dislike eggs. This could easily be a way bigger issue if someone is genuinely highly allergic. Their glasses were also not exactly clean, but that happens I guess.. Sadly the the whole experience just made our day a bit bitter tasting. Cute interior though..

I believe this has moved just around the corner, as it was on West Richmond Street. Fantastic restaurant. Small/cosy, no reservations is slightly problematic, but worth making an effort to come at the quiet times, or hang around for a table. The food is delicious, gyoza and katsu curry in particular. Very friendly, and a lively buzz make it ideal for a quick and tasty food experience.

Great Green Dragon Roll and Black Garlic Tonkatsu

The facility and service are extremely good and the staff are very friendly! The karaage was also very good, but the texture itself wasn't quite as good and the noodles tasted very hard. In addition, the soup wasn't to my taste either. Still a very good restaurant where you can eat well.

Felt like a local ramen-ya in Tokyo - the noodles were awesome, with great “ha-gotae”. Excellent.

Maki & Ramen offers an excellent variety of ramen. I tried the tonkotsu ramen and it was delicious, well served and very filling. Accompanied by a rice tea, it was the perfect dinner after a day of exploring Edinburgh. Highly recommended!

Should be just called Maki, since their Ramen taste bland AF. We had the tonkotsu and black garlic tonkotsu. The flavour doesn’t stick to the noodles so you’re basically eating noodles straight from the water pot. The broth was also mediocre, can’t tell that it was cooked for 8 hours. Can probably make something similar using just a bouillon cube from Tesco. The sushi was quite good though, so one star for that. The service was also OK, but not special enough to warrant a 10% service fee that they throw in your bill. Overall I’d recommend the sushi but man, I really regret getting extra flavorless noodles for another 3 quid. Eating it felt like a chore.

Ordered food for delivery and it was DELICOUS! The packaging is so nice - lovely cool bag you can use afterwards. They gave us extra soy sauce, and our sushi had loads of lovely ginger on the side. The food was delivered quickly, and because of the insulated packaging it was the perfect temperature. Really fresh and delicious food :)

So far I have been to this place twice, I can definitely say that this place is better than most places I've been in the states. Despite the size of the establishment, Maki & Ramen has a wonderful atmosphere with what they can do. Their hell Ramen is both pretty spicy and delicious to enjoy. I wish I could visit this place more often, but won't be able to as I have to go back to the states. Personal experience here has been a 10/10 and I recommend it to those who are looking for a Ramen place in Edinburgh. Quality service, amazing food, all prepared with love I'd say. You guys rock!

The food was great!! The staff was even more amazing. I was visiting, by myself, from another country and the staff made me feel so welcomed! It was nice to be around friendly, hospitable people!

Service was very nice and atmosphere was great, but my ramen (miso) was not that good and after a while karaage chicken was soaked and not good. My boyfriend took Hell Ramen and said it’s really delicious.

What a find. The food was so good. Sushi was fresh and tasty. Ramen bowls were well proportioned and morish. The beer was cold and the wasabi was as expected. Would eat here again for sure.

I ordered a black garlic vegan ramen, it was alright, the broth was too watery. The worst part about the place was the service, it was TERRIBLE. We were not given our bill or attended. Once they finally gave us the bill we were not attending again, which was not the case for the tables next to us. They did not split our bill right even though we asked them to split it. On top of that they added a service charge without giving us the option or even telling us our total. I understand if a restaurant is busy but when all the tables around you are being attended well apart from yours it definitely leaves a bad taste. Go there if you want bad service.

Lovely Maki & Ramen restaurant, with a japanese style bar around the kitchen (kauntā seki). The ramen is awesome, the only thing I can complain about is the texture of the chasu. It tastes as it should, but I’m used to chasu that melts in your mouth. But since it tastes like chasu, it is not a big deal… some places say to have chasu and it’s just bacon. This is not the case here. The service is really nice, and there’s an actual japanese worker serving tables, which makes it even more authentic. Haven’t tried the sushi, but it looked delicious in the table next to us. I bet it was as delicious as it looked. Arigatou gozaimasu for the dinner we had!!

After booking an online reservation for another location, we walked all the way there to learn they were apparently closed? There were boxes and bags completely blocking all windows and there was clearly no business being done inside that restaurant, as a restaurant. We walked all the way to the next location near where we were staying and found the food only good, not great. The ramen had no flavors standing out among each other, the sushi was fine but nothing special and the space was much smaller than the other location so it was tight.

Very nice place which felt like mini Japan in the centre of Edinburgh! Ramen was delicious especially the broth! Atmosphere is very pleasant and staff are friendly and ready to help you :) I recommend.

The food was ok. Noodle was better than some other places. The sushi rice was kinda mushy. Friendly but very slow service. They didn't check on us even once after dropping off food but didn't forget to charge a 10% discretionary service charge. (It was hard to find because the Google map was apparently not updated and it kept directing us around the corner which they used to be).

Real oriental food, only the environment is modest...

Excellent food, very decent quantities and at good prices. Offering good range of vegan and vegetarian meals as well as sushi and meat-based meals. They started a few years ago as a very small restaurant and 5 years later have a number of outlets all around town. That by itself says a lot!

The ramen is delicious, the sushi roll is huge, the tea is amazing. They charge 10% of the order amount for a tip. Terrible toilet

Cannot say about the food unfortunately. Took a 20minute walk to the restaurant on a Monday seeing the sign as open. Walked in the door which was open with people sitting at the window eating. It says it closes at 3. We arrived at 2. Absolutely furious with this and disappointed.

Best ramen and gyoza I’ve had in a long time. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. When I told the waitress about my epilepsy that’s triggered by flashing lights she even turned off the Christmas lights for me so I didn’t have to worry <3

Saw this place had a large queue and thought this must be good. Boy was I wrong. Service was poor; waited 10 minutes for just a drinks order to be taken. Food was overpriced and bland. I do not understand why there was a constant queue at the door. I know this is a small venue but it just doesn't justify it being over hyped and under seasoned. States sushi on all literature and none on the menu. Go to Yes sushi for a tasting menu 8 courses for £22.99 rather than two bland courses on cramped tables resonating a cramped prison canteen.

This is a great place to come for a hot bowl of soup on a rainy day. The tonkotsu ramen is rich and tasty.

Delicious food and great atmosphere! Coming from the northwest of the US, our expectations for sushi are quite high and this place met them. By far, the best sushi we had in the UK and delicious ramen, definitely lived up to the hype. I got the classic tonkotsu ramen and the salmon teriyaki roll and loved both. The restaurant is very cozy and has walls of sticky notes people doodles on, which was a cute and entertaining touch. The service was quick and good and felt like a good value for the quality.

Black Tonkotsu ramen is sooo good! They offers sushi and vegan ramen too. The ambience is calm and cute with its sticky notes. Staffs were accomodating. Will be back to try more.

Today’s experience left much to be desired. I asked to swap the pork in my noodles for salmon and was asked to top up £3. I’ve been here and to many other branches countless of times and never been asked to do that. Fine. But what really irked me was when I tried to order an extra portion of noodles with soup for my five year old. Maki Ramen does NOT do kids meals, but they do offer an extra portion of noodles for £3. Short of ordering another full sized adult portion, I would usually get this option. Today’s service staff refused to give us extra soup and served a DRY BOWL of noodles to my son despite me explaining the situation. I felt that was really unkind and mean spirited, not the Japanese way at all. Also if you sit downstairs, you will wait forever for service. We walked upstairs to try and pay our bill only to find our Japanese waitress on her phone. Miserable experience. Very unkind to mothers with young children. Avoid this branch.

The food is so good, the black garlic tonkotsu was delicious and full of flavour. The staff were really friendly but unfortunately the restaurant itself is tiny and at peak times you have to be very lucky to get a seat in there for groups more than 1 or 2. We had to get a takeaway but that didn't take away from the quality of the food, it was great.

Enjoyed the ramen, but the chicken side was disappointing. Next time I will just get the ramen, rather than the sides as well.

My husband and I went in for their ramen one evening. I had a bowl of tonkotsu ramen and I honestly think that it was the best ramen I’ve ever had, even better than the one in London (Kana**-Ya). No joke. The broth was super rich and the ramen was cooked to the right consistency. We were served by Andrew, who was really nice and cheerful, which made the whole dining-in experience that much better. To me, there’s no point in going back to a restaurant if the staff are rude, even if the food is good. Good food isn’t hard to come by these days, but good service is. Visited on: 1 July 2023
