Makan cafe was a recommendation and wasn’t a disappointment, on portobello road on the outskirts of the street market, this place is a must try….. we were there for the Malaysian food but they also do chimes food, Indian snacks and treats… samosas, kebabs, cakes, desserts…. There’s plenty of choices…. The Roti Canai is very good, flaky and crisp Roti, flavoursome curry…. Top 3 in London….mee hoon goreng seafood…. Vermicelli noodles with seafood and egg…. Mouthwatering good, right amount of spice, very authentic in taste, fresh seafood… washed down with iced teh tarik, correct amount of sweetness and flavour….. take away banana cake which thoroughly enjoyed on train home…. Amazing recommendation and you’ll struggle to find a better cafe that caters for many cuisines….

Authentic Malay of Malaysia. Relaxed, delicious, tasty and home cooking at its yummiest. Enjoy the flavours of Southwest Asia as if Auntie and Uncle cooked you a meal. This is fresh ingredients with family recipes. If you are familiar with Malaysian food or have adventurous taste buds, you shouldn’t be disappointed. Ask for Auntie or Uncle and ask them what they suggest for you. I had the Char kuey chow and my friend had the Ayam (chicken) rendang and both were delicious. We took curry puffs and coconut cake to go and they were soo good for snacking when back in our hotel room. I’ll be back here in a couple weeks for another wholesome meal for sure.

Good location on Portobello road with a good choice of food, much of which is Malaysian, that tasted great. Have to say that reheated food via a microwave never tastes as good as freshly cooked, but I guess if you haven’t got queues of customers it’s the only way to cook dishes ‘en mass’. Remembering this is a cafe but it would improve the look if plates were cleared a little quicker.

I had lunch there today with my Singaporean wife, and since this place has been here years and looked busy we had higher hopes. I ordered Singapore laksa [with chicken], and my wife had fried kway teow with prawns. Placing the order and the food arriving was swift/fine, the waitress friendly (and table and place as a whole seemed clean). The dishes were around £7-8 each. Chilled water and cups are available [free] on the counter for those who want it. I'm writing with from the experience of having lived in Singapore for 4 years. My wife's kway teow was authentic, complete with the lovely slightly smokey wok fried edge to it. It was a good portion too, luckily, as I ended up eating about 1/3rd of it. My laksa didn't turn out as well for me. It was made with vermicelli noodles ['angel hair'] which isn't right, laksa noodles are rice noodles that resemble spaghetti in size; a lot thicker. The soup [aka 'gravy' to a Singaporean] had a very good flavour, but was too thin. It would usually contain more coconut and so be thicker, and also rich. There was also too much gravy, so my dish resembled a bowl of soup, with noodles etc hidden on the bottom of the bowl. Eating the soup was difficult as rather than a 'Chinese soup spoon', or a western soup spoon, they had small western dinner spoons. The laksa has a looot of soup to try and eat with a small/shallow spoon like that. The soup was piping hot, so I had to take some noodles out onto a separate plate and let them cool off before I could eat them. The soup aside the quantity of noodles and chicken was quite a lot smaller than expected. It was when I was staring at the enviably large other dishes being brought to surrounding tables that my wife offered me some of her kway teow. To make the laksa more authentic [IME] it could have perhaps 1/2 the soup, twice as thick, use laksa noodles, and be more generous with them. - I also had a bowl of laksa at Phat Phuc Noodle Bar off King's Road recently, and they show it can be done authentically in London at a decent price. We will eat here again, I feel I just got unlucky so won't order laksa again, as said the Kway Teow was good, the other dishes I saw appeared generous in comparison.

I have been going to this restaurant for at least a decade and it's true prices have risen, but ultimately that's life; rent prices go up, inflation rises, they have to make a profit so of course prices rise, but Makan is still far more affordable than most restaurants in London. £6/£7 will get you a large plate of rice or noodles plus a selection of three curries from the counter, which has great variety, catering to meat eaters and vegans alike. Personal favourites are the Aubergine sambal (don't expect any of this to be left after 5pm) and the daal. When I ate meat I used to love the spicy chicken sambal. Alternatively you can order off the menu, for a similar price. The mee goreng is lovely and the roti canai - a fluffy, flaky and highly addictive bready thing served with daal curry- is an absolute must. I tend to order a plate of rice from the counter with a selection of curries and order roti canai as a side to share with whoever I have as company. Drinks wise I would recommend the teh tarik (a spiced and unique tea hailing from Malaysia) for after your meal as it's hot and sweet, or an iced milo which is a malty, chocolatey delight of a drink which accompanies the spicy richness of Malay cuisine nicely. One cautionary word I would leave is to avoid the laksa, a dish I absolutely love and would recommend to anyone wanting to understand the essence of this cuisine. Unfortunately, it's poor at Makan, surprisingly so, and tastes nothing like real laksa. That sour note aside, I would very strongly recommend this place as it's pretty cheap, delicious and far removed from the more widely consumed Asian food in and around London. The venue isn't sophisticated by any means so don't expect the appearance of a fine dining establishment but go for it and your taste buds will be buzzing with joy!

I always craved for local Malaysian cuisine when I visit London from time to time. This is because I am a typical Malaysian and born with a typical uncontrollable desire for local food after spending a week in a foreign land. So when I stumble upon Makan Cafe after reading the good reviews in TripAdvisor, we decided to give this place a try. We ordered two plates of Nasi Lemak and a CKT. The next minute we were told to change our orders. So I told the one of the staff that we travelled all the way here to makan (eat) Nasi Lemak". The staff obliged and we where served respectively. The rice didn't taste like Nasi Lemak and the CKT was awfully prepared. I told the staff that they had served us plain rice instead of Nasi Lemak. One staff said "'couldn't you taste it? While the other snapped "didn't the cook explained to you ? Long story short, the staff made us felt stupid as if we didn't know what Nasi Lemak was ! I felt I was conned !! This place has definitely left us with a bad after taste.

This used to be such a great Malay/Singaporean haunt and it was always so busy when we were Weekend regulars a few years ago. However we returned this weekend to find that all the prices have crept up to more standard restaurant prices and the place felt so much quieter now. We had the Laksa that used to be my staple favourite which tasted less rich than previously and more watery but still had a huge amount of noodles and the Char Kway Teoy was too oily but had good flavour. The Aubergine Sambal is still great though washed down with a Teh Tarik!Overall we left feeling a bit sad that one of our West London fave restaurants had adopted more standard restaurant prices and yet the quality of the food had stood still and is still essentially a cafe and that's what I always liked about it and the interesting people that used to hang around it seemed to have left and is now mainly frequented by tourists.

Somehow I miss the Malaysian food I tried while living in Australia's West coast and in my multiple trips to Singapore... and finally I found a decent place in Europe serving it. I tried the Laksa (Singapore style), Mee Goreng and Roti. The Mee Goreng was definitely the best choice. It was awesome!!! The Laksa was very authentic. However, I found the Roti too thick and greasy. The place is not fancy (e.g. the restroom was not very clean), but definitely is a great choice for Malaysian food and a great price. But also don't be afraid to order from the menu. The seafood Laksa is delicious, and the simple Nasi Lamak is also great: I love those little dried fish and peanuts! Came across this restaurant by chance while reaching the end of Portobello Market towards overhead train lines. Very good authentic Malay food, friendly staff and reasonably priced. I had Nasi Lemak, which is sort of a staple for most Malay stalls in South East Asia. Delicious!

We're Australian and like to think we can taste good Malaysia from bad. Makan Cafe is brilliant and in our top 5 Asian restaurants for London. We originally ordered from them on Deliveroo and found the food genuinely very good. Nasi Lamak, seafood noodles (I've forgotten the originally name) and roti channai. All very delicious.Within a week we were dining in person. Wedged under the flyover crossing on Portobello road it's an unassuming venue with simple clean decor and friendly staff. Our second run on their menu was laksa (best I've had outside of Asia), satay (not sure how Malaysian this is but very good), Nasi lemak (the chicken & condiments make this dish) and the obligatory roti channai. Great food, nicely presented by friendly staff. I'd recommend to anyone wanting to try Malaysian for the first time or expats looking for the taste of home. One of our London comfort food venues.

Paragem para uma tomada de café rápida com amigos que não foi de todo boa. Pior situação foi as colheres para mexer o café ser colheres que estavam dentro de um copo de água (suja). Café também não valia a pena.

We had the chicken laksa, seafood mee hoon, curry puff and teh tarik. The laksa could do with a thicker sauce but it was quite tasty. The mee hoon was nice with prawns and some fishball slices. It's nice to come across authentic Malay cuisine in the heart of London.

This is travellers cafe that has been going at least 25 years. Under the Westway in Portobello Road. £5.50 vegetables with rice noodles. Very ethnic. Dishes on display like in a cantina. Mix and match. Loud steam noise coming from the coffee machine was very intrusive! Open Sundays. Open until 21.00. Wifi. Very bright harsh lighting. Easy to speak to people. Good place to go solo. Very friendly. Highly recommended.

We went this this place in the afternoon. Although I would say that this is more to CAFE than a restaurant. The food is fresh and authentic Malaysian food. We had mixed rice with beef and veggie, a little bit greasy and the portion is too little for our lunch. Don't expect any presentation on the food as everything is all in one which means everything will be put on the same plate. The ambient of this place seems so messy and I am sure if the place is decorated well and improve the service that they give to customers. This place would be a place to visit in London for those who are craving Malaysian or asian food.

I love the food here it's authentic and the food served is definitely going to bring you back time and time again. I love Makan's. It may seem they don't have too much variety to choose from but there's definitely something for everyone on their menu. The rice and noodle dishes are so good as are their chicken and seafood. I love their crab claws with some sweet chilli sauce and I often get these to start. They have s great mild Thai green chicken curry as well as their laksa and stir fries. Their vegetable dishes are also so tasty and well seasoned too. I will and have been back several times since I came here. It's not a place to be wined and dined but it sure has the yummy factor! And they're so well priced!

I did not know that this restaurant exists. Haha. Until I did a "check-in" in my Facebook at Portobello Market doing some shopping for souvenirs and one of my contacts recommended to me to eat here. As I was using the British prepaid data plan, I turned on the Google Map and voila, it was just 5 minutes' walk away from where I was standing. Food was good, staff were friendly, our cravings for Nasi Lemak and other Malay dishes were satisfied. Price-wise, quite reasonable for a restaurant in the city.

We stumbled upon Makan Restaurant at Portobello Market back in 2007! What a nice surprise n we were not disappointed with the food there!A second visit today. Amazing that the restaurant is thriving. We took the set lunch - rice with three dishes for £6,95. The portion for each dish was rather big and they were good. I shared my lunch with my daughter as we were rather full from eating various stuff from the market including the portobello crepe ! I was tempted to try their mee Goreng etc but the stomach couldn't allow it. Too full. Next time!! So it is worth going again after about 10 years. they are a good alternative to Malaysia Hall especially for those on limited budget.

Very authentic Malaysian cuisine. This place doesn't try to do too much like most Malay-Sing-Indo restos. Even the Malaysians in our party were impressed. Noodles, fried rice, lamb and chicken curries were all good. Quite cheap too.

Go there every time I find myself in the area. The food is delicious, there is always plenty of choice, you get a satisfying quantity for a very cheap price and the staff is extremely lovely !! The first time we went in there we didn't know any of the dishes on offer, and there was so much to choose from we were a bit clueless. Even though the place was very busy the waitress spent time explaining each dish to us, whilst smiling and didn't make us feel for one second like we were being a nuisance. Definitely recommend !

Friendly warm welcome, comfortable surroundings, and excellent service from the team. Can't say one of our dishes was duff - everything perfectly seasoned and super tasty. I'd recommend this spot without hesitation. Can't wait to return!

Do not go here thinking you will get a good bar experience. The bartender Dennis was rude. He never responded with words to anything. I asked if we sit and he said I don’t serve anyone. So we ordered and had to find a seat after getting drinks. . He rolled his eyes when we asked for refills. No piano player as advertised.
